gracias for helping keep e-waste down, that 6400 should keep this pc out of the landfill for at least 3 years, and even after that can always give to a young family member as first pc and be able to keep out of landfill for a few more years
Often it's not hardware that the issue. It's in-built obsolescence via software.
Case in point, until a few months ago I was running a Dell e6410 latitude. Which is a 1st gen laptop with a "massive" maxed out memory of 8 gig.
Ran a Linux distro on it.
Worked like a charm - so good in fact, I used it for audio production work.
Did that for over five years with this thing.
Completely agree. That’s a major reason I make these videos. Every time we toss out an old computer or device, we're damaging our environment for future generations. My hope is that more and more people can get comfortable with upgrading or repurposing old computers by following along with my videos, and together we can make a positive impact.
I had a low profile Yeston RX560 that did okay in the 3020 SFF that I have, but eventually went with the RX 6400 myself. When I got it, it was supposed to have an i5 4570, but actually came with a 4670. It does make for a decent entry level Gaming PC, especially with 16Gb of memory and the 6400 installed. Good video.
Hello I have the same setup with the pink rx550. Was there much of a difference with the rx 6400 I’m running 16gb ram and a i7 2600 Not sure if I should buy it any help would be appreciated.
@@growfishgrow1 I did get a little better performance, but it all depends on what you are comfortable spending on it.
@@ThatPaulGuy ok ty for reply think its time to get a better pc
@growfishgrow I’ve been finding really good deals on eBay on Optiplex’s with 6th gen processors
Great video. These units using 4th gen intel CPUs can often be upgraded to a locked 4c/8t Xeon. Nearly all the "haswell" generation desktop chipsets "B" "H" and "Z" all supported the E3 v3 CPUs. I have used a Xeon e3 1271 v3 in a haswell generation optiplex before and they run VERY well. Why Xeon? Well I could often get them for less then their 4770 and 4790 i7 family members. The top few 4c/8t Xeons match performance of the i7s. The only downside? No integrated graphics. But that is what the RX6400 is for ^_^
the PCI-e slot is not a 16x slot (but is 4x), in fact even if the length is correct, its color is dark and not white. For this reason, this fantastic RX 6400 video card got a vote from tree trunk!
I’ve played Apex Legends on a sff HP with an i7 3770 and RX 6400. You can tell that PCEI gen 2 is a bottle neck. However the game still plays great, usually over 60 fps, and Radeon super resolution makes everything look pretty crisp.
Yea it’s crazy how it can still hold up through the through the gen 2 slot playing a modern game.
What is the Maximum PSU I require with i7 3770 With RX 6400
I threw a PowerColor RX 6400 card into my Dell OptiPlex 7070 SFF ( i5-8500 CPU, 500 GB Samsung NVMe SSD 980 PRO, 32GB RAM ). When putting the GPU to a max power test, it seemed as though the fan was quite noisy, just as it was stated in one Amazon review comment. However, the noise was actually the CPU fan blasting air out of the back of the computer. During this GPU test, the CPU was hovering around a mere 39C temperature. I assume that this double CPU fan feature is a built in DELL BIOS feature. There are no case fans in the DELL 7070 SFF version, and thus if a GPU gets hot, the CPU fan also then becomes an air blow out case fan, meaning a push fan. In my case, no pun intended, I also installed a case fan that is located at the front. It is tied to the CPU fan connector, via a fan splitter cable. It functions as the master fan (4 pin), and the CPU fan functions as the slave fan ( 3 pin. Sensor pin not connected. ). Long story, but this master-slave arrangement increases the CPU fan speed a bit, since the case fan that I use is a slower rpm fan than the CPU fan. Anyhow, most of the time when not gaming, the GPU fan is off due to the temp being less than 60C when watching Netflix or YT videos.
I just fixed one of these up for my neice. Picked up a sff optiplex with a ryzen 5 2400g in there for £100. Replaced the ram and threw in 16gb. Got this exact same graphics card. Had the same issue with the 16x slot being so close the PSU, was so happy when I discovered the 6400 range. Anyway, completely removed the harddrive caddy and just use the m2 ssd installed. Cut a tidy square out of the metal top cover where the cpu sits. Rubber bezelled the edges and fitted a magnetic dust sheet to increase airflow to the cpu. Kept the plastic airtunnel inside as it does keep thermals low not just for the CPU but the whole system. Overall happy with the build. Works out cheaper than buying something new and it was a fun project too. Gave it a pop before handing it over. Was perfect for a doomer like me. Games like osrs with hd plug ins, or world of warcraft. Perfect for it. I assume games like league of legends and minecraft also.
Yeah, it would work great for all of those. That sounds fun. I should do a case mod like that for one of my next videos.
@@OptiGPU defo worth trying. You can come up with a brilliant build for 300 quid that way. Better than new computers twice the price!
Had the RX6400 in my 7060 sff until it ate the gpu and possibly the pcie slot. beware, but man it ran freaking amazing!
Wdym "ate" the gpu...
I have an I7-4790 in my optiplex & just run the Integrated graphics from the chip into a 55" Sony Bravia TV.....good enough for surfing & media playing.
The extra HEAT from a GPU would be detrimental in my opinion.
I put 4 DDR3 sticks in mine totalling 20 gb.
It stays below 50 degrees Celcius.
Your my new favorite Opti Plex channel! SUBBED
Love it! I’m honored
i have the same card on an r5 pro 3400g with 16gb of ram and 500 gb nvme and 250gb nvme plus 500 gb HDD. Te performance overall for a 250 usd computer is insanely good, however it is quite loud hahaha. Great video
La tarjeta de video es ruidosa?
I've just completed this exact same build. This is my first experience with an AMD graphics card, and I have to say I'm not impressed. It may work well with a dedicated monitor, but I'm using this as a home theatre/gaming/emulation PC, connected to a HDTV, via the HDMI. Having adjusted for the overscan via the HDMI scaling setting of AMD's Adrenaline software, this keeps resetting every time I leave Steam or Kodi, shifting the screen out of position until I reboot. Very aggrivating! Also the HDMI audio keeps cutting out.
Switching over to onboard Intel graphics card removes both these issues, with the overscan correction much more easily implemented in their software. Before you ask my TV is quite old, so can't correct for overscan itself. I also have the latest AMD drivers.
So for now I continue to with display connection via the onboard Intel graphics, with the AMD 6400 configured just as a graphics processor in Windows. As I don't feel this is as effective, because the card isn't outputting directly to the display, I plan to now sell the card and buy an Nvidia card.
Bro… for a 100 bucks you’re not impressed? Seriously? Lol
the PCIE TDP for that optiplex is 50w and the RX 6400 is 53W tdp, how is it holding up rn?
I’ve got a 7010 SFF and I’m interested in this thing because it’ll give me space for a WiFi / Bluetooth card and better space for cooling.
Yes good call
RX6400 at PCIE 3.0 speed leaves quite a bit of performance on the table tho. I wish there's another option with at least X8 bandwidth so it will work better in these older machines.
Yea, I’m waiting for something with 4.0 speed to drop in price enough to be considered a budget build. My guess is that we’re about 2 years out from that.
Optiplex 3020 is PCIE 2.0, 6400 is very slow in that machine :(
Hello, nice video, what PSU do u have in that pc?
hate amd for disabling overclocking on the rx6400 ... i recomend gtx 1650 oc 4g phoenix, remove dvd drive and cut down the hard drive tray and add standoffs to gpu and run hdmi to the rear, cut hole in side panel and add fan grill for gpu
Good adds. Yea for low profile right now if you can’t go full height (have a SFF case) and if you can do double-width, a 1650 or the A2000 is the way to go
How about Nvidia's T600, T620, or T1000 single-slot low-profile GPUs or it's respective predecessors such as the P400, P620, and P1000? The RX 6400 doesn't have a hardware video encoder but the Nvidia ones does. It could be another option especially for those who wants to livestream or record gameplay without tasking the CPU.
T600 is a "okay-ish" card. A bit expensive but okay. It's between the GTX 1050 Ti and the GTX 1060.
The T1000 would be a good choice for about 200 $€ whatever currency...
I own the T600 and this card can play newer games (like Horizon zero dawn, Farcry 6) at FHD min settings at 30 to 50 fps.
Yeah, that’s a good option for a media server. I believe I’m using one in mine.
Great video man. Will this graphics card also work in the 3010 SFF?
I've got exactly an Optiplex 3020 with i5 4590 , 8 GB DDR3-1600 dual-channel but i might consider a 16 GB DDR3-1866 upgrade as I can't oc this locked CPU (probably it wouldn't hold oc as long i upgrade the original 240w PSU too). I don't care that much about newer games , i just bought a 165 Hz monitor to play League Of Legends. I hope this cpu push over 120 fps.
I think it could get to 120 fps on older games depending on the game at 1080p.
did you know thwere are people using both ports on the back for 2 screens wired up?
Thanks!!
No problem!
Hi! How big is the power supply for the machine?
240watts
Is the RX 550 4 GB any good? Also do you know if the front 4 port usb panel from a 9020 be swapped to a 3020 (it has only 2 ports)?
Curious how the RX 6400 performed with what I am guessing is PCIe gen 3.0 in these Optiplex PC's. Is it worth the cost/benefit for a decrease in performance from PCIe gen 4.0?
My guess is that it’s not set up to be very future proof. It does ok with the most demanding modern games right now only if the system RAM is maxed out.
@@OptiGPU I had a ThinkCentre M900 with an i7-6700 lined up for an RX 6400, but then I switched gears to install it on to an ASUS board with PCIe 4.0. Paired it with a Ryzen 5 4500 and the increase in performance was notable. Budget was kept low due to how cheap the 4500 CPU is. I instead installed a GTX 1650 low profile card into the M900 and that was a great pairing. Good luck with your Optiplex series.
yes i read that the PCIe 3.0 backward compatibility will make it less than GTX 1650 but i havent benchmarked that to check it myself.
I have a hp prebuilt pc with 180w power supply, can i add rx 6400 with it?
It depends - Use this to calculate the load wattage based on the specific components:
outervision.com/power-supply-calculator
idk but 7010 has pci-e slot too in some of its version. if im not mistaken for some video i watch as well as available in my country
The 7010 can even support dual-width cards
Hello! Im planning to to this build, is the oem power supply from the optiplex enough to full power the rx 6400?
Yes, totally enough.
Do you think it holds on a Arc A380 ? The Elf one.
Does de pau hold on
will a 1650 low profile fit in a 7040 dell optiplex or I should get a rx 6400? I need help I am getting dell optiplex 7040 soon
The 7040 has the same PCIe setup as my 7020 that I’ve been using as my emulator gaming set up since 2020 from my early videos. Unfortunately the better slot (16x) is in the wrong position closer to the power supply, but comparing pros and cons, even with the bottleneck you’ll get better performance from a double width card like the 1650 plugged into the 4x slot been a single width card like the RX 6400 plugged into the 16x slot. The cost difference is about $50ish, it will get better performance, and it will fit.
@@OptiGPU Makes sense, since the 6400 is wired for 4x anyway. It wouldn't gain any bandwidth from the fact that it fits in the 16x slot. I guess a single slot low profile 1650 from ASL, Yeston or Leadtek would be the fastest option if you can get you hands on one, but they're not cheap...
@@OptiGPU im haviing problems i put my new rx 6400 card in my del 7050 and it wont go pass the dell screen please help me out bro

Is your PSU at 240w? Because I have an Dell Optiplex 5055 SFF and I would like to put an Rx 6400 LP someday will this work on the 5055 SFF? Nice video ^_^
You need 240w. I have the same rig. Had to get an 240w psu for the 5050sff.
Optiplex 3020 pcie 2.0 or 3.0? How drop the gpu performance?
depends on the graphics card. it's not really a bottleneck for a "old" gtx 1050 but more for a gtx1080, rtx 2080 or similar.
For a GTX 1060 the PCI 2.0 x16 vs 2.0 x1 is a bottleneck of 15% (losing 22 Frames per second)
(For explanation: I cut a pcie x1 slot open so a x16 card would fit into it. electrical it's of course still a x1 slot.)
@@gumpi5 Can we use the embedded Display port also 2x2 So i can run 4 display at same time or suggest me some low profile for same 3020 with 4 display out
I got a question can you install the rx 6400 into a dell optiflex 7010 sff
I have dell 7010 with Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1650 D6 OC Low Profile and it works great. The RX 6400 LP should work fine.
You absolutely can. The 7010 is good for a dual width card as well.
i did the same and i kept getting the bsd
So optiplex 5050 i5-7500 16gb ram 250gig ssd 1t drive for games installed rx6400 did all the things works for a day or two then amd driver crashes/times out right away at startup restarts pc flashes dell then black screen use ddu and redo hole proces and happened again a few days later work really well when it is working
The first step is to check for any dust or debris in the heat sink and fan on the graphics card. Dust and debris could be causing the card to overheat. Use a can of compressed air to blow out any dust or debris, but make sure to immobilize the fan first to avoid damaging it.
Next, check to see if the fan on the graphics card is operating smoothly. Look for any stuttering, starting and stopping, or other irregularities that may indicate a problem.
If the card and fan appear to be in good working order, the issue may be related to a failing GPU, memory, or power supply. To test this, download a free utility like OCCT from OCBASE_COM, which can test both the GPU and power supply and help identify any issues.
Before making any changes, such as updating or reinstalling drivers, it's important to check your Windows update history to see if a recent video driver update may be causing the problem. Windows updates have been known to cause issues with graphics drivers in the past.
Hey bro, I have a 7040 MT and ive seen the best no risk option is gtx1650 but I know the i5 6500 can handle a better card, my limitation is the non standard 240w psu, should I just stick to getting the 1650 or is there any way I can get a 1660 in there.
I’d go with the 1650 unless you upgrade the power supply
Low profile radeon rx 6400 can run 180 watts (optiplex 5050 sff)?
Yep!
How is the Optiplex still holding up by chance? Very worried about installing a i7-3770, 4x 4GB sticks of DDR3 and a Sata SSD and the RX 6400
I have the same specs that you mentioned. Recently got a sapphire RX 6400. I would say it's pretty well.
Sekiro(High) : 60 FPS
God of War(Original) : 45-50 FPS
Watch Dogs 1(High) : 80-90 FPS
Hitman 2016(High): 70-80 FPS
I would recommend not pushing everything to ultra while playing. It can handle them in these specs but it's better to not push it too much. Going with med-high settings. It's worth the price.
Don't use userbenchmark
Can we use the embedded Display port also 2x2 So i can run 4 display at same time or suggest me some low profile for same 3020 with 4 display out
can I have a list of graphic cards that can fit into a optiplex 3020. I don't want to spend money on the ones I buy
Hi hisoka
Your Optiplex 3020 has PCIE 2.0 max 16GB RAM and I dont think they came out of Dell factory with more than i5 RARELY. 7020/9020 are better in many ways.
Yeah, it may be about time to start recommending at least i7s for modern gaming. If you want to go with a duel width card, ideally you’d want to go with a 7010 or a 9010 because of the location of the PCIe slot. Of course that wouldn’t matter as much with the RX 6400.
will it work with 200 watts?
Yes!
Where are you from bro
Tf? 💀
Hi, can it be installed on 3471 sff?
The dell pc came with a 180w psu
And i want to upgrade it. Whwt type of psu should i buy??
300 watts above just to be sure. I have this same Optiplex 3020 and I can't find a PSU higher than 255W which I already have.
I have the same Optiplex and I want to get this but my PSU says maximum 250w capacity and AMD says the GPU needs at least 350w, would there be a problem there? I see yours it's the exact same power supply, did it have any issues running it on the games?
It should work. Take out the cd drive and disconnect that for less power use. I have the same and with an ssd and 16GB ram with i7 variant, I'm
Gaming just fine.
Good Afternoon,
I had instaled one RX 6400 in my dell vostro 3470, perphaps when i playing games the temperature is too high ( 90 C° or 194 F°). Do you have this same problem if the computer of video ? Do you any suggestion to help me ? Thank you for your time.
Hottest this one got was 80°C. Are you sure the fan is coming on as it should? Does it have the latest driver installed?
Hi i have a intel DH61CR motherboard in my custom built pc, i reccently bought a rx6400 and everytime i put it in, the computer doesnt start, i tried switching the bios settings over to uefi but thats for hard drives and ssds i think, the cards fans spin but no POST to screen its always black. im at a loss i dont really know what to do i have a i7 2600 and 16 gb of ram with 2x 500gb hard drives and a ssd 250gb thats plugged in via usb at the top
Can’t promise anything because it truly could be a number of things including being a faulty card, but try removing it, then using this utility and reinstalling it:
"Display Driver Uninstaller":
www.majorgeeks.com/files/details...
This utility removes all traces of graphics drivers whether Nvidia or AMD. Useful when changing cards from one to ther other.
What about the psu? Can it handle it? I have a dell optiplex 3020 but the mini tower model and im looking for a rx 6400. I have a 230W and im doubting if it can handle the i5 4th gen and the rx 6400 without problem
It should be fine. The RX 6300 only uses a max of 53W.
Will this card support dell optiplex 9020 sff with 255watt
Any heating issue you got while gaming the heavy games

Yep and I didn’t have any heating issue. I did see frames drop here and there on a couple of games but I wouldn’t have noticed had I not had an overlay up.
would this gpu run with 180 watt psu and i5 6500 16gb ram
That would really be cutting it close. If you could upgrade to the 240 W version, it would be a safer bet.
This is not a 3020 sff but a 7010 ? Isn’t it ?
I install it in a 3020. In the first 15-30 seconds I’m just comparing those 2 and why single-width is necessary for the 3020.
Hi bro. Can a low profile 2gb rx550 will work in 3020 sff ?
I don't think it will fit
A Yeston Rx550 4gb 640sp it's the best option.
That card comes in lots of different shapes and sizes. If it’s truly a low profile form factor, it should work.
