    Since watching you and the Roxul mentions, I've done my research and now, I'm budgeting for Roxul. Thanks for that. I don't even care about the addition to the my budget. You sold me, Dan.

    "fire resistant". We use this to insulate our diesel burning furnaces. To keep the burners from melting the steel plate. It's just the rock wool bare inside the furnace. It gets saturated with diesel when they break. You just burn the diesel off and put it back in. I have no idea how to even catch these on fire.

    Thank you. I'm using Roxul in my shed-cabin. Nice to feel like I made a good choice. But I've had problems with it tearing and also have had lots of problems with getting it to not fall out of the ceiling ... you've given me some great tips on cutting it better (especially since I've had to be creative with my cutting since I bought 16 inch when I really needed 24 ! )
    Thanks again !

    Love your build. And maybe you already explained this and I missed it, but what is the reason for a vapor barrier on the inside? Under the drywall? You're not building against concrete or in a basement so I'm just wondering what the benefit of an inside vapor barrier is when usually tyvek (or something like it) is used under the siding outside already. Thanks, too, for the info on Roxul! Amazing insulation!

  • @juxtn

    would it be better to wire the outlet boxes on the surface of the wall so you can devote that space the electrical box would otherwise occupy inside the wall with more insulation?

    Just keep in mind the weight of Roxul!! It is very heavy compared to other insulation! I ended up using it only for subfloor and ceiling because it would have put me over my 10,000 # gvwr for tiny house trailer!! I love it too but weight is a con.

    I've refrained from commenting for a long time and I hate to be "that" guy, but the kind of sloppy electrical work shown is the reason towns and building inspectors are labeling tiny house death traps on wheels. You don't have to follow code in all cases, but if you can't tell me why the code is the way it is, then you probably shouldn't be making that call. Also, unless you have damaged the insulation on Romex, wire is definitely reusable. Nice job on the insulation though

    • @TinyHouseCustoms
      @TinyHouseCustoms  7 лет назад

      +Liam O'Brien sooo. Where was the issue with the electrical?

    • @Solar_Tech_Liam
      @Solar_Tech_Liam 7 лет назад

      I could spend at least on afternoon going through past electrical videos (don't get me started on the barn) but I don't want to be a safety nanny (though the EE part of me cringes every time I see dodgy wiring).
      1) Running wires around a gang box, from a common sense point of view, does it look good? If not, then it probably isn't a good idea. A better option would be to go around the box by switching studs
      2) Cable has to be stapled within 12in of any box and no more than 4ft thereafter. That is the maximum, most jurisdictions say 14"-16". Every 4 feet allows a lot of movement of the wire, especially for those who do spray foam. Staples are cheap, make sure the wire can't go anywhere.
      3) All switches are required to have a neutral wire in the box per 2011 NEC, plus it is required for most smart switches anyway
      4) Protecting wire runs with metal protection plates, unless the wire is at least 1.25in inset (or the very middle of the stud), you need to have a plate over it
      5) Having outside light fixtures without a box, you can't just run a hole with a wire through it, mainly because you can't clamp the wire to anything, see point 2. This Old House has a video showing the right way to do exterior lighting.
      I understand your not an electrician but people see stuff on youtube and think "well he did it so it must be OK". Plus I don't want to see those custom windows go up in smoke :-)

    how are you ventilating the roof?

    • @TinyHouseCustoms
      @TinyHouseCustoms  7 лет назад +1

      +Richard Green I believe the only reason you vent a roof is so you don't cook asphalt shingles. It helps keep them cool. But since it's a tin roof there's no need.

    • @mandolinmountain
      @mandolinmountain 7 лет назад +1

      Richard Green An architect suggested using 2"rigid foam board and caulking/ spray foaming seems and gaps..also known as cut and cobble. Then I used 3 1/2" roxul for the interior side.. for a total of 5 1/2" of insulation. Then use ar least 10 mil vapor barrier. If you do it this way you wont need to vent. The purpose for venting is to prevent rot in joists and to protect shingles.

      +Wolf Man You could spend as little as 10k to as much as 80k. I would say the average 20-24 ft'er is around 30-40k. But that can change and go way up with just a few upgrades.

    • @skylerhall1537
      @skylerhall1537 6 лет назад

      I'm currently trying to budget for a tiny house and it's looking like a budget of 50k for a really nice, super fancy, energy efficient (small) barn with all the trappings and fixings of a full size house. Although that doesn't include the cost of land which is 43k for 4.2 acres in South eastern Idaho so... woo, less than 100k for a nice house with a garden if that's the sort of situation you're looking for . A more bare bones house would probably cost closer to 25k but still be a decently nice home.
