Today we take another trip out to The Shottages to put in insulation in the bunkhouse. While there, we go straight to work. This is not intended to be a "How To" video from a professional insulation installer; however, I do show the DIYer how to insulate 2x4 rafters and walls using fiberglass batt insulation / Great Stuff spray foam insulation. Using feedback from Facebook commenters, we install 2x2 sleepers along the rafters to ensure adequate airflow through the baffles in order to maximize insulation value.

Thanks, I just insulted the walks for my 12x24 man cave/gym, now I know I have to do the roof!
If you live in the northern cold states once you put the insulation in (you can use unfaced it's easier to separate it into a half by pulling it apart to put electric wires in) staple up clear plastic over the ceiling and walls to keep out moisture. In the southern states put the plastic first onto the particleboard walls then put insulation. Make sure your roof ridge is cut with the knife for ventilation and along roof edge where your overhang is. Should NOT be airtight or mold will collect. You could put paneling nails in your 2x4's sporadically across the ceiling and walls running nylon cord (skinny type) in a horizontal manner like a backward letter 'S' it makes it easier than installing boards to hold the insulation. I'm just a girl...but a State licensed Home Inspector. Nice video🤓
Hi Me Hardie,
I'm purchasing a shell 12x24 this fall - 59 , single and leaving the apartment racket for country livin in NW Alabama. Love that I found your channel, the timing is perfect and I am looking forward to learning with you as I start my new adventure. Thanks for the insulation videos, I will be starting that project in a few months. Cheers! -Bruce
Awesome! I'm glad you found us. We used to live in Huntsville, as my last military assignmen, before moving to Maine. Good luck in your build!
I’m coming upon some of the same issues you had and I learned from you and will make some modifications! Great video! Thanks for making it!
Great job on the insulation install. And I definitely like the idea of using the bag that the insulation was in for trash. That would have saved me a lot of trash bags if I saw it before I did mine. 😁
No doubt. We definitely created our fair share of trash. Thanks for watching!
Thank you, I will be putting in my insulation tomorrow. Awesome tips..
Good stuff! I am in the process of ordering a shed to have as my hunting cabin and i have done plenty of research on roof ventilation and you are doing it right. It's too bad that a lot of shed companies don't incorporate a soffit area. This has been my big hangup/obstacle.
Thanks! I hope your build goes well and you can share your progress!
New subscriber here in north Texas. I agree with the guy below, you usually don't see the roof soffits added and it's good to see you're doing it correctly. I wish I had a dollar for every one of the channels I've watched that left out that critical step. If I had a dollar for every one of them, I could buy my own shed. 😒
Thanks for this video. I got a cabin getting ready for installation…
Looking good! It's been a bit, hope progress has been good throughout the summer
Great teaching...thank you!!!
Thank you! Very informative!
Thanks for the video we're going to be doing the same thing coming next spring.
Good luck! I hope this helps a little.
Oh it will we just bought land in Bridgewater Maine we're going to put two cabins on it 😁
Thank you, awesome video I learned a lot.
Great video with valuable information!
Very helpful, thank you!🙏🏾
Great blog take care
Thanks for sharing definitely will help me!
No problem. Thanks for watching!
Perfect job!
Thanks! Have a great day!
How fun it was to hear you mention my channel! I’m enjoying yours!
Hey, Terry! I can't believe you found the channel. It's kind of like having a celebrity drop by. Thanks for the hours of entertainment out at your property. Hopefully that water fully receded by now.
@@mehardies3999 I recently found you guys and have really enjoyed your channel so far. Thanks for the mention!
Thanks!
Do you then put a plastic insulation over it to keep the humidity out before putting the sheet rock on top? Great video
Nice bro!!!! Job well done. Save some of that great stuff for me to play with when we come. It looks like fun to play with. Hey I do have a question though. That bread knife is genius but I wonder if you could use a rotary cutter. Cuz in quilting we use it the same way. With the ruler and pressure. It seems it would make a smoother cut for a cleaner edge. With the cut in one smooth move?
Love ya God Bless 💜💜💜
Quite possibly, as long as it stayed compressed enough. Those Fiskars rotary cutters are wicked sharp.
Thanks for the info. Do you think there is a need to caulk the interior before insulation to keep out moisture??
Utility knife works great too, with a scrap 1x as the straight edge. A Utility knife & a couple packs of blades cost half what you said your bread knife was.
You're right. We just never had much luck trying to use the utility knife. Thanks for watching!
Great infomation thanks to you and alan about the 2x2 tip i just ordered a shed should be here this wrrk dont know if rafters are 2x4 or 2x6 i overlooked that part but i know what to do if need bee question im in nc do i need a plastic vapor barrier over insulation i dont think shed comes with one just gonna be a craft wood working shed
Could have just used a carpenter's square instead of the level to make sure all your cuts are square. Also, an OLFA 25mm snap blade knife works good for making those cuts too. Would have been a good idea to go around before you started this process with that spray foam and spray behind all those electrical boxes and at the base and top plates of the walls and any other penetrations to the exterior. Also helps to keep any critters out. Otherwise I love this project! This is pretty much what I would do some day for a cabin or tiny house.
I have a question now: what type of spray foam would I need to use to seal behind the electrical boxes and around the bases? Are there two different types needed or can I use the same one?
I've seen others simply split the layers to fit behind the romex. I've also seen a thermal analysis about whether it is best to staple on the 2x4 face or on the sides.
I was doing a mix of ideas splitting the layers and trying to cut it at the approximate location of the wire. I'd be interested to see the results of those studies. Thanks for watching!
@@mehardies3999 Check out parts 1 and 2 from this link: ruclips.net/video/NpkXxHRp8U0/видео.html. I think it shows the difference at the end of part two.
I believe the Kraft facing is meant to be a vapor barrier, so regardless of the thermal value I am sure it supposed to be stapled to the narrower inside facing edge of the 2x4, and each of the seams should probably have a vapor barrier tape applied. Ideally obviously.
Having done a few similar projects, I humble myself before your speed and skills. The only question is, why the extra material and labor where you used that can of foam? That would be a better place to use scrap fiberglass. Am I missing something?
why not cut all 7 at the same time since you have more than 7 slots to fill?
Great work 👍🏼
Question will this keep it cool in the summer and hot in the winter ?
NO I THINK NOT HELP A LOT , MUST WELL LEAVE WITHOUT I WILL
I can't imagine still using fiberglass in this day and age but I guess everyone has their preferences
Why?
Fiberglass is cheaper
Up to 79 Awesome!!!!!
Thanks!
ITCHY!!!!
Does you roof have a ridge vent since you used baffles?
Takes way too long, put the bat up against the wall, staple the top, cut at the bottom with a razor blade knife, boom one and done. Staple the rest. No need to be this precise.
1.) it must be exactly the correct size or you might as well not use any because it only works if it is a precise fit.
2.) you can't hang it and cut the bottom as you cut from the side with out the paper( it's incorrect in this video as well)
3.) I hope you have learned a few things and your welcome
@@dal8963 1. It affords precision the way I stated to do it. And it doesn't have to be super precise.
2. You hang it in the wall, and cut it from the paper side, not sure what you're referring to
3. I've done it this way plenty of times and never had an issue. Thermal imaging has shown my way is effective as well, not to mention, home adequately cools and heats. Hope you learned something as well.
This tip is good, Incorrect. I hate hanging installation. I hated it as a child and I still hate it as senior. When you hang it, staple enough to support the weight. Push the insulation close so it's not pulling down on the reminder. Make sure you have enough facing to staple the egde( unfold a bit)If you're not good At eyeballing it, make SURE you add that additional 3/4 inch to length. Just thinking about insulation makes me itch and have nightmares. The proper knife is important. Love the bread knife idea. Have scissors and with you for the tough spots on the glued-folded-edge of the craft facing. This can preven tearing kraft. If cutting horizontally, try rigid material (foam board) to keep the knife sharp. Tips work according to how YOU work.
Mask, and respirators are always good for(yard work and sprayer painting)Sjogerns or people that are especially irritated by allergies.
If possible, do this in a cool non- confined OR one- direction passive ventilation. For occupied areas, fibers WILL fall on EVERYTHING.
Spray insulation with hairspray. If not completing the install, clean up, vacume and damp-wipe after each session. Vapor barrier one side only and according to use and region.
Still hate it. When installing in a tight spot or overhead, use w lightweight electric battery or kraft stapler.
Facing
did you do some sort of weather seal/breathability between the insulation and the wall or was there already a membrane on the outside?
How many batts did you use for the walls. Do you have to insulate the roof?
How may packs of insulation did the 12x24 take?
Them fiberglass shards ohhhh weeee
Temp nail a 2x4 to the floor the distance away from a wall that you need your insulation to be. Then butt one end against the wall and use the middle of the 2x4 to cut on
how many packages did you use.
Out of curiosity, what's being stored/done inside this shed? R30 with baffles is pretty overkill considering it's not a living space and doesn't have to comply with code - you'd have been better off just making it a hot roof with R13/R15 and adding a small roof vent...
What were those baffles in the ceiling for?
When you did the underside of the roof, I noticed some white material with holes. What is that?
👍👍👍
Thanks!
Did you drywall?
Does it not matter that there is no vapor barrier on the studs?
Nice video. I thought most insulation installers used box cutters to cut the insulation?
I think most do, but I haven't figured out the "touch" that makes them so quick with the utility knives. I was much more effective with the bread knife and straight edge.

I guess, whatever floats your boat, just don't make a sandwich out of it.
What was the total cost?
Hey man what about what type of A/C system ? I run a window tint business out and it’s so hot my body can’t take more than 4 hours in that thing cooking me alive to the point I chug water and stay hydrated but it’s gave me heart stroke and heat cramps but I tried a window unit also 3 ton until blowing air at the top back corner and it worked great until I have to back out the car and bring in the next customer. So all the cold air gets sucked out immediately. So I removed them both and started just leaving open the shed garage roll up door and sliding window on the side . Do any one have any suggestions or good ideas to somehow have a\c. But quickly cool back down so I can actually stay longer at work with the garage open and I want it closed so I can work in peace and just not kill myself because it’s just like so bad i just need to try something else . Someone said put up one of those plastic thick curtains like they use in walk in freezers and put the window unit back .
If anyone can give me some info that would be helpful until then I’ll keep looking for a solution thank you
I just lay the insulation over the wire,I'm sealing it with plywood
Sounds good! There's so many ways we can tackle this same project. What really matters is us picking up the tools and getting it started!
Could have overlaid foam board with the sheathing....
How much did the insulation cost?
I'm about to insulate a 12x20.
Thanks
It was about $1400, but that was for two 12x24 sheds. $700 per shed isn't too bad. Good luck!

Thank you.
Any new videos?
Of what benefit is a mask constantly taken off while still in the contaminated area and one touched with gloves also worn to touch the contaminants?
Hi
Don't use a bread knife use a razor blade and a square work's Alot better for a straight edge then a level.
Next time just use 2*6s for the roof that's what it should be anyways..
Did he die ?
you keep forgetting to wear your mask lol
OMG bla bla bla what a smart ass
Hi, I’m too old
fiberglass batts ? seriously ?
Yes. Thanks for watching.
Nice! My turn :)
TOO MUCH WORK ! BETTER NOT INSULATE NOTHING AND LEAVE TO THE SUNNY BEACH ON JAN _ FEB OR BUILD A LOG CABIN INSTEAD OF THIS CHEAP THING
