ME Hardies

Добавлен 19 июн 2017
Hi. Welcome to ME Hardies. My name is Bill and I recently retired from the military. Since retirement, my family decided to settle in Maine and we've gotten into doing house renovations and DIY projects. One of our most significant projects is trying to build a semi-off grid cabin, or set of cabins, we call our Shottages. They are two 12x24 sheds on which we are doing a budget build, shed to cabin conversion. Some might call these conversions a Shabin or Shamp, but since our property is in Downeast Maine and on the Atlantic Ocean, we opted to call them The Shottages.
We are making every attempt to do this tiny house/tiny cabin-style build as a mostly debt free self built home. Until we are able to build a house closer to the water, we will be living semi-off grid with composting toilets and an off-grid shower in the bathhouse.
Please consider hitting that SUBSCRIBE button to follow our RUclips series. Sit back and enjoy our Maine adventures and all Vacationland has to offer!

How To Insulate A Shed Roof & Walls | 12x24 Tiny Home Semi-Off Grid DIY Shed to House Conversion
Today we take another trip out to The Shottages to put in insulation in the bunkhouse. While there, we go straight to work. This is not intended to be a "How To" video from a professional insulation installer; however, I do show the DIYer how to insulate 2x4 rafters and walls using fiberglass batt insulation / Great Stuff spray foam insulation. Using feedback from Facebook commenters, we install 2x2 sleepers along the rafters to ensure adequate airflow through the baffles in order to maximize insulation value.

Needs a check valve on the inlet
Thanks for all the information…I’m a 63y/o woman getting a lofted 12x24 with a porch and am petrified! I appreciate your simple ways of explaining things and will go back and watch all your videos. Thanks again! God Bless ✨
I will be insulating a 12'x24' shed but not closing in the walls. Should I still use faced insulation?
How many 4x8 sheets of interior to finish the walls and ceiling ??? Mine is like yours basicallly open floor a tilt roof frame no ceiling as it follows the a frame pitch like yours. I need the amount of sheets i need. I know the walls 8 ft and 2 24 ft lengths and 2 12 so thats 48 ft minus door and two windows on front. Its the ceiling roof im wondering how many i need? I imagine i could use the same as roofing the thing was but it will be less interior lol. Im cheating here. Never did interior.
I talked with the guys who insulated my sunroom last week. They said the roof does not require baffles since it’s all closed and to proceed with faced R19 for the roof, I put up R13 for the walls. After the roof, I’ll put in the sheet rock.
Closed soffits
You didn’t show, are the baffles leading up to a vent?
I can see how those baffles function to create airflow, however, there are still areas where there are no baffles.. can’t humidity still build up in those areas?
Nothing in a while Hope all is well
😮 Winterize is key Blessings
Hi Bill You are helping me and motivating me to tackle this type of project. Going to seek your continuation video Doing the same project on a shed to tiny house in south AL. Do you have air intake in the soffits? Or the baffles are for air flow within the roof structure only? Excellent ppe tip! R values to use 💪🏼 Did you install a Vapor barrier before the drywall? Ty for your time
Nice vid! did you add a vapour barrier between the room and insulation for the roof after?
The paper is the vapor barrier is what I read
some them pieces he cut he could of used for the small gaps rather than great stuff lmfaoooooooooooooooo hire a mexiCAN next time.
just feed it behind the wire lmfao
Thank you for this so much! I have a shed I want to finish out, and had no clue as to how to do the ceiling properly. This is the ONLY video I've found on how to do it right.
Can you use a male voice for the audio?
I watch both of those channels!
Are the baffles needed for the roof if the peak of the roof is capped?
What is the construction of shed walls. Looks like t11. Is there a vapor barrier? Looking to insulate my shed that doesn’t have vapor barrier.
I'm a retired AF Vet also. Thanks for your service!!
Thanks, I'll order my baffles and I'll use R15 for my ceiling in SC
Really like liked the Drummond water pump to the artesian well. Trying to do the same thing with each of the pumps you have. IDENTICAL PUMPS, LOL. Could you elaborate why you don't have a check valve on top and what do you find easiest to prime that five gallon pump. As id like to eventually plumb to a small cabin and a spigot for chicken water and have the big pump run a line to prime the smaller pump to transfer water??? Sorry for the long comment, just I've scowerd the Internet looking for something this specific. Thank your son for me for being so informative at the end. Look forward to seeing your future videos. 😊
Thanks, I just insulted the walks for my 12x24 man cave/gym, now I know I have to do the roof!
How did it go, man? Im starting the same project
I'm curious? What "insults" did you choose to use against said inanimate object?
@@PatrickMoattypo...Insulated!
@ForeverYoungKickboxer went very well, after I do the roof, I'll add the sheet rock
Was wondering why you would connect the pipe to pump before putting the pipe into the well? Also, when removing the pump, why not disconnect the pipe first? Thank you
Having done a few similar projects, I humble myself before your speed and skills. The only question is, why the extra material and labor where you used that can of foam? That would be a better place to use scrap fiberglass. Am I missing something?
Hey man what about what type of A/C system ? I run a window tint business out and it’s so hot my body can’t take more than 4 hours in that thing cooking me alive to the point I chug water and stay hydrated but it’s gave me heart stroke and heat cramps but I tried a window unit also 3 ton until blowing air at the top back corner and it worked great until I have to back out the car and bring in the next customer. So all the cold air gets sucked out immediately. So I removed them both and started just leaving open the shed garage roll up door and sliding window on the side . Do any one have any suggestions or good ideas to somehow have a\c. But quickly cool back down so I can actually stay longer at work with the garage open and I want it closed so I can work in peace and just not kill myself because it’s just like so bad i just need to try something else . Someone said put up one of those plastic thick curtains like they use in walk in freezers and put the window unit back . If anyone can give me some info that would be helpful until then I’ll keep looking for a solution thank you
Could have overlaid foam board with the sheathing....
How did you get it to stop the surge
Nice! My turn :)
Great infomation thanks to you and alan about the 2x2 tip i just ordered a shed should be here this wrrk dont know if rafters are 2x4 or 2x6 i overlooked that part but i know what to do if need bee question im in nc do i need a plastic vapor barrier over insulation i dont think shed comes with one just gonna be a craft wood working shed
OMG bla bla bla what a smart ass
You are cutting right under that insulation. No resp mask or eye protection. I can see stuff falling on you. You should be more careful.
An Artesisn Well isn't a problem, it's a huge blessing.
I ran PEX from my shallow well pump into the side of the cabin, i added a shutoff with that small drain cap that unscrews, i used heat tape that worked well , then i left the place for a Winter SnowBird break down south....hope all is well upon return. I want to remove the old 2.5" galvanized piping and replace but am concerned the hole will fill in some during such an attempt. The cost of a new well is communist - ly ridiculous.
Next time just use 2*6s for the roof that's what it should be anyways..
Where you are located, keep your eyes out for native american stone points/tools as well!
When you did the underside of the roof, I noticed some white material with holes. What is that?
No matter what goes wrong, these are the good old days. Thank you for sharing the good and the challenging....
the good ole days were the 60's and 70's
@@BillyJoeBob-tv6coYou missed his point completely.
Temp nail a 2x4 to the floor the distance away from a wall that you need your insulation to be. Then butt one end against the wall and use the middle of the 2x4 to cut on
Out of curiosity, what's being stored/done inside this shed? R30 with baffles is pretty overkill considering it's not a living space and doesn't have to comply with code - you'd have been better off just making it a hot roof with R13/R15 and adding a small roof vent...
Does it not matter that there is no vapor barrier on the studs?
Very helpful 👌
you keep forgetting to wear your mask lol
You need some juicy steaks on that grill! Nice job on the well. I’m wanting to do something similar to irrigate my yard. This video was very helpful!
New subscriber here in north Texas. I agree with the guy below, you usually don't see the roof soffits added and it's good to see you're doing it correctly. I wish I had a dollar for every one of the channels I've watched that left out that critical step. If I had a dollar for every one of them, I could buy my own shed. 😒
Did he die ?
Everything takes longer than planned and expected
What the heck? Baffles??? I thot i was going to buy the pink stuff and throw it up there. What, now we need " baffles"? Which ive never heard of but im just a diy woman! What do i know. My shed comes next week. They build it but we will do the finish work. One thing most important to me is to put wire mesh along the bottom frame and trench it way down and out so no critters can't get underneath! Ive got wire mesh and landscape fabric down already under the gravel pad that was built. But i am envisioning me trying to nail that wire mesh down to that base plate while they are trying to build the shed! That wont work! Ill probably have to wait til they are done and go back up under and do that. Its important or you'll have critters living under it!
What happened to this guy ? He seems to have disappeared
TOO MUCH WORK ! BETTER NOT INSULATE NOTHING AND LEAVE TO THE SUNNY BEACH ON JAN _ FEB OR BUILD A LOG CABIN INSTEAD OF THIS CHEAP THING
did you do some sort of weather seal/breathability between the insulation and the wall or was there already a membrane on the outside?
