Hi,whats your recommendation for hook size to breaking strain of line and length ? I have had many lost fish from shop bought pre tied banded rigs these last 3 years,i honestly think being short at 3.5 inches or 4 inches means the line loses its shock absorbing ability. Where possible i have tried and had had great results with the guru elasticated method feeder, with a 6 inch hook link ,not lost one on that set up,but not all fisheries permit the elasticated feeder.
Hi Gary ! First of all thanks for commenting, this is a great question over the last 2 years I have been upping the breaking strain of my method feeder hooklengths. Like yourself I have lost fish using too light a hooklink to withstand the bolt of the fish (these are probably really decent carp) . You are right the short hooklinks don’t stretch so they just give. I use 12lb to size 12/10 hooks now and 8lb through winter . The marginally thicker line doesn’t put the fish off . I look more at line diameter now than breaking strain, a lot of these companies advertise a high breaking strain but low line thickness however they take the stretch out of the mono when they do this. That puts more stress on the knots. I have also experimented with fluorocarbon which is a little thicker but stronger ! Yes elastic can take a lot off stress from the line and would be my preferred method, but like you say most fisheries don’t permit it. I also now set my drag a lot lower 👌🏻👍🏻 with this combination of changes I expect to lose less fish next year. Hope that helps!
Might be controversial but, I use the baitrunner on the back of my reel, to take the initial shock. After I pick up the rod,I lock the baitrunner and rely on front drag and playing the fish (carp) to land the fish.
Definitely not Controversial John! No right or wrong way to fish in my opinion. This is a good idea. I also do this but when I’m fishing methods on bite-alarms!
@@WestysAngling so refreshing to hear from someone else who isn’t put in, or stuck in a fishing category. It’s great to experiment with different types of fishing, then put them together for something that works .
Totally agree, I get people commenting on my videos saying things should be done this way or that way. It isn’t the case. I think Match fishing and big money making companies force people into the mindset that things have to be done a certain way, as long as I’m Catching I am happy. Experimentation is part of the enjoyment of fishing for me👌🏻👍🏻
Great tutorial am loving your videos i struggle to tie consistent hook lengths will give it a go. Also very impressed with westys 8mm pineapple wafters haveb#had my best ever fishing sessions with them great videos keep them coming more of float fishing would be appreciated too thanks Westy
I always use hair rig hook lengths for my fishing even with the waggler but never with a band. Thanks to your vid just made some banded rigs looking forward to next trip to the bank. Great tutorial.
I used to use hair rigs but baiting up is a bit of a faf! Much more efficient with the band I think that’s why I stick to it! You can also band Perry much anything but boilies 👌🏻👍🏻 thanks for commenting Trevor!
great video westy ..i use 10 to 10..10 hook to 10 pound drag line:...i find that a good balance for me personaly never had many breaks....and landed some lumps...but i mite look at those korum hooks look like a nice wide gape...tight lines...
Question for you westy can i use a longer hooklenth on a hybrid feeder ? Same as a cage feeder ! Curious not putting bait in the hybrid feeder trying to get all bait to the bottom
That’s really nice to hear !! I’m so glad they have been of use . You can email me at - WestysAngling@gmail.com or send me a message on the WestysAngling Facebook or instagram 🎣🎣
Great video. I have a trip planned and worms and prawns are very productive for carp and tench could I use these for a hookbait with method feeder? Is there actually any bait shouldn't use with method?
westysangling.co.uk/products/westys-stone-camo-banjo-feeder-value-5-pack my 25g ones fit the Preston red small mould perfectly ! But honestly you don’t need the mould for banjo feeders, just thumb the bait in 💪🏻🎣
@@WestysAngling thanks for your reply mate your videos are great very enlightening without all the bullshit sales gimmicks keep them coming well worth watching
You can use whatever you like buddy! Though others would tell you differently, there are no rules when it comes to fishing. The only difference between guru nguage is it’s a very thin line diameter so apparently harder to detect 👌🏻
@@WestysAngling thanks, just started tying my own, I suppose the thinner line would thread through the eye of the hook easier too, I’m using 12 lb hook lengths To 15 lb mainline, size 12 hook. Sounds like heavy gear I know, but I just keep upgrading the breaking stains till the breakage stop. Lol. The carp round here fight like mad, especially the ones around 7lb.Thanks for the instructions.
@WestysAngling thanks mate I've had some great fish over the last few years. Travelling has been the key fishing the right venues 👍 Enjoy your channel and hope I can get comfortable in front of camera like you 👍👍 tight lines
The key is in the editing, I mess up a lot and sometimes takes a good few takes before I’m happy. I have worked in sales 9 years it certainly gives me a little more confidence when filming and talking 👍🏻👌🏻
@WestysAngling at the moment lymmvale it's one of the lymm anglers waters and I've had great sessions on there but it can be busy! Just joined Prince Albert so have got too many to choose from 😬 enjoying the river Severn at the minute but can't wait for spring 👍👍
Hi there, great video as always. Very clearly presented, thank you :) I am still new to fishing and just about to start trying to tie my own method rigs, so your video is just what I'm after. Two quick questions please: 1) I have been looking at Guru micro bait bands on amazon and they come in 2mm and 4mm. Which do you recommend for wafters? 2) Looking at rig tubing, does it come in different diameters or is it just standard? Two newbie questions :P Thank you and cheers, John.
Either 2mm or 4mm will be fine ! Guru ones are really strong ! 8mm wafters your probably better with the 4mm 👍🏻 I think it’s the guru macro rig tubing I use 👌🏻
Chods are actually fairly difficult to get right because of the stiff mono and curve needed. I actually usually buy mine ready tied 👍🏻👌🏻 just my advice 🎣
Been watching a lot of your fishery reviews. Just enjoy your passion and the little bits of banter with your dad over peg choice haha Keep up the good work. Got my eye on your baits bundles for when I'm next low in bait

Korum Allrounder are great hooks ! Thanks buddy ! Great comment 👍🏻👌🏻
Great video, what size bait band would you think is good for 12mm wafters please?
I’d be using a bait screw for 12mm wafters mate not a band 👍🏻
Sorry I meant dumbell wafters* I currently use the pre tied drennan rigs but they seem poorly tied
@nitrobang yes even with the dumbbell wafters I would be using a bait screw buddy, it will help weigh them down
Question for you westy can i use a longer hooklenth on a hybrid feeder ? Same as a cage feeder ! Curious not putting bait in the hybrid feeder trying to get all bait to the bottom
You could go slightly longer and see if it makes a difference, but definitely not longer than 6 inch 👍🏻
I just got into feeder fishing and your tips have helped me alot how do I buy some merch off you

I like Korum allrounder 👌🏻great hooks
Great video.

Worms and prawns can be awkward on the method feeder. Sections of prawns hair-rigged would be fine but it’s a very soft bait. Can be tricky !
Westby which banjo feeder mould do you use for the cheap banjo feeders the Preston's one is to small to take the round banjo. Cheers Dave

Hi mate the Korum EVA ground riddle set (K02900340) can't seem to get this any glues.
Sold out in the uk apparently mate
I will try that does my head in when my rigs are different lengths 👍👍
Just checked out your channel ! You should be giving me tips with some of the cracking fish you catch! 🎣

What line do you recommend to use. Both hooklink and main line
Mainline Daiwa sensor - 10lb normal Daiwa sensor (not hyper sensor) hooklength, guru n-gauge 9lb-12lb
Thank you 👍. Watch a video of yours most evenings lately
@johnwraxall8914 love that ! Any favourites ?
