- VS. Original Hardware, Virtual Console & More! Now that Nintendo Switch has its first proper system for classic games, how does NES on Switch compare to Wii, Wii U, 3DS, NES Classic Edition, original hardware, mods, and FPGA alternatives like the AVS and Nt mini?

My Life in Gaming makes documentaries, deep dives into retro console hardware, and more.
I was hoping you guys would do an episode covering the Switch's NES output! After seeing how crisp they looked when I got the service at launch, my mind immediately went to this channel.
[Try4ce] Thanks! It was a tough, but smooth production, getting it done in a timely manner!
woah, I love when my favorite youtube channels are friends
Now they can do the same thing for the freshly announced Switch SNES app
Your production value is insane this shot alone 0:44 is extraordinary.
Yep
In regard to the Nintendo 3DS NES Virtual Console games' palettes: a friend of mine who has the Ambassador thing lent me his 3DS - which had Zelda II: The Adventure of Link, among other NES games.
I played a Zelda II for a bit, but I couldn't put my finger on why the colors seemed "off" to me. And then I realized why: on the 3DS, the NES Virtual Console games use a palette that looks identical (or ALMOST identical) to the one used by the popular "FCE Ultra" NES emulator.
I (and my friend) live in an NTSC region, though - and FCE Ultra uses a palette that matches the output of a NES in the PAL region, which… in some cases, looks very ugly: take, for example, the battlefield when two pieces are fighting in Battle Chess.
It uses the color $08* for the screen's main background color, and $18 for the circle in which the two pieces are fighting - the darkest two "Yellow" colors on the NES's palette. On a CRT television in the NTSC region, these colors show up not as a dark yellow, but instead as a dark yellow-y green.
But in the PAL region, $08 and $18 are a brownish-gold color instead, which makes the imagined grass look completely dead instead. :(
I actually made a big screenshots gallery that shows off the different palettes of various emulators, going all the way back to one of the first - and one of the most popular - NES emulators of all time, NESticle, and I found it fascinating to compare all of the palettes side-by-side and see how the variance in colors affected various NES games.
In case anyone was curious to see almost a dozen NES palettes applied to various NES games, my gallery is here:
procyon.com/~kizul/nes_files/screenshot_gallery/
Aside from the palette I made, the only REALLY GOOD palettes for NTSC NES colors would probably be the ones made by FirebrandX (in particular, his "Composite Direct (FBX)" palette):
www.firebrandx.com/nespalette.html
And now that I've finished dumping more info than many of you ever wanted to know: I'll end this comment with a footnote that explains even more stuff. :D
*$xx is the Hexadecimal number for a color index in the NES's master palette, which is frequently displayed as a a table of 64 cells arranged in a 16×4 grid.
The left digit in the index number corresponds to the "row" the requested color is in. The selected row determines how bright the color is, with 0 being the darkest and 3 being the brightest.
The right digit corresponds to the "column" that the requested color is in. The first (column 0) is "White". The next twelve columns (numbered 1 to C in hexadecimal) are colors starting with Blue and ending with a Cyan or Turquoise color. Column D is "Black", and includes a specific black - $0D - that's actually darker than the rest of the black entries in the palette, so dark in fact that it has a tendency to mess up how a game displays on some TVs. The last two Columns (E and F) are the same color of black as $1D, which is sort of an "off-black" - not PURE black as nearly all existing NES master palettes show it to be.
Dear my life in gaming,
Thank you for existing.
Sincerely,
Calvin.
This.

First LGR uploads today and now MLiG uploads a video.
I'm happy
I need your theme song as a ring tone! It always feels like the beginning of something epic. I just love it.
Just want to repeat what everyone´s already saying: You guys are amazing! Always on point. You and DigitalFoundry are the ultimate kings of technical video game analysis. Might wanna sell a nice Blu Ray with all your episodes and bonus features?
seconding this!
Always a great day when there is a new video in your RGB series!
You rule. Thanks for this.
Nice to see you here!
Hi John, greetings from Chili
Man ! i just love those retrogaming channels ! "My life in gaming" is one of the best. Keep up the good work guys!!!
Well... I had somewhere to go. But I guess it can wait another 20 minutes 😁
I really loved the ending statement to this video. What an awesome way to be accepting of whatever way you choose to play retro games.
Your channel could be a victim of geeking out to much over retro games and video output settings, however there’s just so much polish and thoughtful consideration to your videos that the viewer is drawn in, and left with such an addictive balance of entertaining + education content, that time seems to stand still while watching your vids. Input lag that phenomenon!
Thanks once again for your class leading content and for taking the time to deliver all the nitty gritty the details on our beloved retro games!
Great episode. I checked out the service myself last week and was impressed by how sharp things look and how responsive it was. I do hope it's updated and eventually allows you to remove the border and the controller information.
The Vs. Super Mario Bros. palette is more colourful and pleasing to me than the original, save for the off-white fire flower Mario.
6:08 The scanline effect is more prominent on 3DS models with IPS panels.
You guys deserves a LOT MORE Subs. Like 3 million subs. Your videos is very well written and edited. Sorry my bad english
Agree. 100k doesn't make sense
There's many channel like this and none of them have tons of subs. The thing is...these channels are made for nerds and that kind of content has limits in terms of audience, it's almost a niche.
The retention and burn in on the switch screen itself is something myself and some friends have already experienced as well.
I dont wanna use the X and A Buttons!! I wanna use the Y and B buttons!
[Try4ce] Strongly agreed! But oh well.
I've found that with the switch joy-cons, I prefer X-A because when I use Y-B on the arcade version of SM, my thump keeps hitting the joystick, due to how close it is to the buttons. But they should add the option to map it however you want.
@@AlejandroFerrariMc true. It's just frustrating when your using the Pro Controller. Maybe they did this so it forces you to buy the NES controllers on the Switch?
India Alpha November good point, had forgotten about the new NES controllers, now that I think about it, you can't remap the buttons on the VC for 3DS, so I guess it's just Nintendo being Nintendo.
In reality it just feels Ike they didn't give it a second thought.
Just the intro music alone makes me want to watch every episode that you guys bring out.
God I love this channel. Thank you both for doing what you do. Game on!
I'm glad to finally hear an explanation for the weird flashing effects on the NES classic. I thought there was something wrong with my TV, as I haven't seen anyone else even mention it before.
Does anyone remember Pocky and Rocky!?
That game is so underappreciated!!
I feel like every time I see a MLIG vid I just gotta thank you guys so much for the research and gigantic workload you guys take on to bring us this information.
Can't wait for the My Life In Gaming videos on N64 and Sega Genesis on NSO.
holy crap the OSSC's color reproduction is so much prettier than the Frameister on so many levels
I saw this in my suggestions. Thought it said Rgt 85 at first lol so I clicked. Glad I did. Good video
Great video guys! I've never tried it myself but I'm surprised how extremely dark the NES games were on the Wii and Wii U. Thank you for all your hard work, much appreciated
Have you guys looked into what the joycon update actually did? I noticed a significant improvement in input latency on other games like the Mega Man LC and Mega Man X LC.
[Try4ce] I was wondering about that too, but I haven't looked into it. I never got my Joy-cons fixed by Nintendo, but I haven't played in a situation lately where I would likely experience drops like I used to.
Something that wasn't made that big of a deal but the seizure prevention blur actually makes me physically ill/dizzy when it happens while a game scrolls. That happens because my eyes suddenly don't know what to focus on when everything gets suddenly blurry and try to focus on something that isn't blurry (which makes my eyes go really crazily fast left and right). Good examples of this effect happened during the latest parts of Chuggaaconroy's Earthbound Let's Play. It happens there because the screen tries to flash too often and then blurs the image while you move around. Another example would be this video:
twitter.com/nickycyansparks/status/1043316126334119936
If your eyes try to desperately focus on something that isn't blurry and go really fast left and right while you play this video, I'd say you shouldn't pick up an NES or SNES Classic, nor the NES Switch service. At least, that's what I'm not going to do. I fear of having a seizure because of the seizure prevention. How ironic, huh?
Shame though because the emulation looks good... besides the sound lag, what's up with that?
you guys took it to another level again, congratulations.
I love the topics that you guys cover. Thanks for continuing to pour effort into your guys' videos. It doesn't go unnoticed.
You guys continue to make high production videos rivaling any of the big YT channels! Thank you! Come on folks! Share this channel with others! GET A MILLION SUBS!
Thank you for showing some love for Faxanadu in this episode!
[Try4ce] I love the look of Faxanadu! Very earthy lived-in feeling world!
Geez those close up of the switch pixels look amazing!
1:46, i told jay to play crystalis, he says he hates it, but i love IT and i love that your using it as an example
I love it this intro, thanks to your channel I have gone total rgb rabbit hole and know own a framemiester and have converted a few systems
Incredible channel, so informative. Quickly become one of my favourites on RUclips
Great video, as always! I did a dedicated episode on the Wii U Virtual Console vs. OG hardware and Wii VC (as you guys touch on here). I'm at least glad to see that the Switch emulation is a step up over Wii U. Having an AVS already, I don't see myself pouring too many hours into what's on offer with Switch Online, though.
Thanks! Your channel really raised the bar with all these elaborate comparisons. Great stuff!
Thank you so much guys for your effort and hard work. Your videos are exceptional! I am constantly looking for a new episode! Keep up the good work. You have lots of love from all of us!!!
Another really cool aspect of the Nintendo Online stuff is that you can make a Japanese account to download the Famicom version of the app, and then use your American or European account and subscription to play the Famicom version of all these games, which is really cool for games like Super Mario Bros 3 or Zelda that are fairly different than their NES counterparts.
"Released in 1983 in Japan..." Insane to think that when the Famicom was released, the Atari 2600 was still in its prime, still the top-selling console, still actively being developed for. They even released the "2600 Jr" model three years later - after the NES had been released in the US!
Hell, Atari didn't release the 2600 in Japan until *AFTER* the Famicom had already been released! (As the Atari 2800.)
This was an amazingly made video. I really enjoyed watching it and seeing the comparisons, you guys made me feel more hopeful for switch online emulation. Thank you and keep up the great work!
Another great vid, please do the polymega when that comes out, something tells me that will be interesting!
I definitely hear the Teenage Engineering Pocket Operators in the channel theme song.
Very awesome to see all the various options compared in depth. I always knew playing NES games on the 3DS was a good option. Especially when it's a 240p display.
So borders, button mapping, one or 2 more filters and a patch to improve online performance just a notch is all we need and this’ll be a must have over the Nes Classic
Thanks for this comparison, I agree they need options to entirely remove the side borders, and also hide the lower button prompts so games can play full-screen 4:3 and fill top to bottom with just solid black on the sides! Hopefully they also introduce other settings, such as allowing us to re-map keys, and maybe even assign REWIND to the L button.
Always interesting to watch your technical approach comparisons.
I can't tell you how happy that graphic at the end made me. Considering the licensing pilgrimage these devs have to embark upon, I can't see even Sunshine happening for at least another year
NES games are by far my favorite games of all time.
0:51 YEAH THAT'S MY JAM.
With regards to the Flashing in NES Games, apparently a number of games used modified ROMs starting in the Wii Virtual Console, including SMB3, which removed the Warp Whistle Flashing as well as changing the flashing effect when you beat Boom Boom.
[Try4ce] I noticed that the warp whistle flash was still in the Wii U Mario 3, but I didn't think to check the Boom Boom flash.
Nintendo gets rid of Emuparadise to make way for a worse alternative! That makes perfect sense! *sips tea*
I'm still downloading roms from emupardise you know that?
@@michalander2131 How?
I just looked and Emuparadise is back!
@@C.I... It is? *squees*
May have jumped the gun a bit. The website itself is back, but all the games say "this game is unavailable", so no change really.
Kudos to you guys for acknowledging that one can, indeed, hack their Mini systems very easily.
Yey! New video from My Life in Gaming ! :-)
19:59 are beatiful mockups
These videos are just awesomely edited!!
Love the Switch sound effect delay 9:40
From what I've read (I think it was on Nintendo Everything), Nintendo intends to add a few additional games each month. So there's that.
Thank you for taking this look at NES emulation to date - it was an intriguing watch, and a look at something I haven't given a lot of my own attention to.
Try and Coury, thank you very much for all your excellent videos. This as usual is great... and fast.
Wow! This only took 3 days! Way to go, MLiG!!! Though, try to rest ok?
[Try4ce] Whew, you know it, I am gonna crash hard tonight.
We need to figure out what the best way to do anything is from watching a movie to listening to music and playing all sorts of video games
This is the content I sub for. Good work, crew.
1 - Buy NES Classic Mini as cheap as possible
2 - Mod it with Hakchi, add all the games you want
3 - Install Retroarch with Nestopia for accurate emulation, and turn on latency mitigation options, low audio lag settings
4 - Enjoy the best possible cost-benefit experience for NES games with original Nintendo hardware and controllers, pure digital image quality, lower latency than real hardware and accurate emulation, plus a myriad of video shaders, filters and settings which can eliminate shimmering.
Your theme song at the beginning is great
Great video! The Wii U's NES emulation/output is shocking.
some games like Mario Bros suffer from unusual and annoying input lag others have too dull colors like Tennis and Super Mario bros. Congratulations for your work!
Great video guys. I dont have Nintendo online service for the Switch but I will eventually get it in the near future.
I can never getenough of your content, for real.
Cheers!
Great work guys. Best channel on RUclips.
You guys rock! Thanks for all your hard work
To people who want to use a projector, the forced on border might be a bit annoying, as when the projection is on a bare white wall, the pillar boxes would natually only appear as a fainted border, and the overall look would be as if the projector screen has physically become natively 4:3.
You guys always do such high quality videos 👌.
Everyone bitches about the service, but I'm just happy that they finally got NES games right. No bilinear filter, no stretching, no degraded color.
I congratulate you on 100,000 subscribers
This is nice. I'll probably this hold me off until I decide to get a Hi-Def NES, and start collecting NES games.
You always inspire me guys! Great work!
I hardly notice any sound lag when playing NES games on my switch to tell the truth.
another excellent video as always, love try's line at the end
Quick! Love it guys keep up the good work!
I LOVE YOUR CHANNEL.
Please keep doing it.
Great episode guys
Goddamnit! I swear on the first I"m buying a couple of T-shirts from MLiG. Best gaming show ever.
NES ONLINE = NES CLASSIC MINI in Nintendo Switch
NES + CRT + Zapper + Everdrive = Perfection
The RUclipsr "Battle(non)sense" is an expert on measuring input lag. Maybe contact him if you want to improve your lag measurements.
Dude! Awesome video! Great presentation as well, subbed!
Great video. For me though, the audio lag on the Switch NES emulation is really distracting. I don't understand why Nintendo can't get this right.
If/when they remove the bottom text + dithered border at sides I'll try the NES games, but even one of those two always on features would put me off from playing. I've never had image retention issues on my old LCD TV but I find always on text etc. very distracting.
But I was disappointed to read that the cloud game saves will be deleted when your subscription expires, so I suppose it's good that it's relatively cheap if you basically have to have it active or risk losing saves. Add in the fact that it won't be supported on all games "to prevent cheating", the whole thing is getting farcical.
Nintendo has some good ass first party games but they are a decade behind the times when it comes to online function
Amazing video as usual!
Nintendo NES App:
7 games in first row,
7 games in second row,
6 games in third row.
Absolutely unplayable.
😂
If you have a TV with Gamma correction, it helps the darkened image issue of the Wii Virtual Console a lot. Just a thought.
Amazing video like always
As someone who has Epilepsy the flashes in the old games make it near impossible for me to play on original hardware, so I rather enjoy what they do with the flashing on the emulation.
so dreamcast rgb200 episode anytime soon?
+GamingGuy800 too new? they did episodes on the ps2 and the gamecube
[Try4ce] Oh we'll definitely be doing it. In fact, we got some good news related to Dreamcast HDMI recently. :)
I'm listening. :-)
@@mylifeingaming lemme guess, Behar Bros Gekko and/or the Pound HDMI cable? I'd be interested in seeing some comparisons between those and some of the many VGA box's that are available for the Dreamcast.
Hell, I don't need to tell you guys, you've never let me down before. I'll be looking forward to the episode.
My Life in Gaming Nice! I literally cannot wait, you guys are the MVP's! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👍🏻
NES on Nintendo 3DS and Wii U Virtual Console is much better than NES on Nintendo Switch Online and I like to play Yoshi, Hogan's Alley, Donkey Kong 3 and Mario Bros.
Great job guys! I like to be reassured my pvm is still the best way to go.
1:26 thats a cool tv :O
