They showcase these amazing consoles the best way I've seen. The music in the background and sound effects are very appropriate and not annoying like some creators. Their explanations are spot-on as well.
This video will be viewed a lot again in 2020 due to the final run of the Nt Mini. Did you guys figure out what was wrong with your FDSStick/RAM adapter? Apparently it wasn't supposed to have the issues you mentioned here. Also, if you ever do a follow up after the last run, I'd suggest giving a bit more attention to the S-video output on a good CRT like a PVM. That is a very unique and interesting feature not available anywhere else, as it gets its colors directly from the emulated PPU like composite, completely removing the color palette guesswork and compromises, but providing a level of clarity reasonably close to RGB at the same time!
Coury and Tr4yce I think the Armored Core series would be right up your alley. Take everything great about Omega Boost and add more tactical elements and you have a series you think wouldn't be made by a developer like From Software. Another thing worth featuring is the HDFury, an HDMI to component adapter designed for HD CRTs which I think you should try out on stuff like the N64 Ultra HDMI.
5:35 seems like you could benefit from a shim polate in the cart well, just have a tiny little cutout thatll go around the pin connector holder..... thingy, and hopefully itll hold it up just perfect so you game will work, or do what i do and heng up the NES and just emulate to keep the hardware safe/laziness
Great video. I'm thinking that if the Nt Mini does all this it's basically a hardware emulator for every 8-bit system + NES and Famicom cartridge slots + an Everdrive for every 8-bit system + 8bitdo wireless include + HDMI and RGB = it's actually a pretty good value (from a certain perspective). Putting together something else that can do all that would cost more than $450.
Hey I'm a fellow gamer and just got onto your channel. Love the intro and content. Everythings perfect so keep up the great work, I look forward to watching more. Cheers.......Booza-b
The fact that FPGA board inside Analogue NT mini can simulate various emulator cores by installing jailbroken software update is mind-blown! I would like to see emulator cores for PC-Engine, Wonderswan, NeoGeo Pocket and others (not sure for Amstrad G4000 and Nokia N-Gage though) to run on this console. Kevtris, make it happen.
Great review of the NT Mini, but small correction on something said in the closing comments. This isn't the first multi-console FPGA system. That would be the MiST released a few years earlier and which has cores for 25+ consoles and computer systems. It was preceded by the Amiga 500-specific Minimig and that core is probably regarded as its main configuration. It currently supports the Amiga, ZX Spectrum, Apple II, C64, NES, Gameboy, PC Engine, Colecovision, various Atari systems and others. An early beta Genesis core was just released and looks promising. Some MiST cores are further along and better than others and it doesn't have HDMI out or 720p+ resolutions, but it's still worth mentioning. It's a solid FPGA system around the price of the AVS.
+Mega [Try4ce] You know, that's a good point and the MIST name even briefly appears in the episode earlier on in a factoid graphic. I haven't used the MIST myself, but I'd like to try it. They are different, but yeah. In my defense, I was really tired when I wrote the ending. :P
[Try4ce] Wai Wai World 2. As for Super Dodge Ball, not sure. I know that game has a ton of flicker, but maybe it's hard coded into it if it doesn't fix it? Just guessing, but if I recall, it's a 30fps game, so it might behave differently from most NES games.
So which FPGA based NES system would you guys suggest for someone who wants their NES games to look good on an HDTV, and therefore has no desire to play the handful of lightgun games?
+videogameobsession [Try4ce] The AVS seems pretty great to us, we ran into no real issues with it. If the jailbreak aspect of Nt mini isn't interesting to you, and you only need HDMI, then the AVS is a fairly affordable option. Just remember it's 720p only, but still looks pretty dang sharp. I like both systems.
Thanks for the reply, I actually own the AVS, and agree, it is pretty great, but was curious on your stance after playing both. The jailbreaking and system cores are very interesting to me, and if it had a way to play original cartridges for the system cores I would probably not be able to stop myself from buying one! I also have an Everdrive N8 so I have that in case I need access to homebrew and hacks.
This question is more for Coury. I just started getting into the retro gaming scene. Luckily I have saved most of my hardware since I was a kid and I got a free PVM from work. As someone who would only use this system for NES/famicom/SMS and the news that Kevtris will be working at Analogue full time. Would you recommend buying this all in one system or paying someone to mod an NES, buying a Framemeister, SCART cables, and a NES Everdrive ? Currently the second option is ~$700 usd which is even more than the analouge but you can use the Framemeister for other systems as well. I will probably only have an NES/Genesis/SNES/PS1.
Great video as always. How about a video in the future of setting up a PVM for the best image quality. I know there are many different pvms out there but a lot do share the same features and adjustments. Would make and great video and help some of us to get the best image available from our monitors.
Very cool review.. Man, kevtris is some sort of wizard ... I love that there's the graphical nsf player included - dope! .. Also - wasn't there some sort of big hulaballoo about Analogue cannibalizing the original chips from real hardware NES systems?
+pendragnx [Try4ce] That was for the original Nt. While I'm not personally too knowledgeable about how they were actually acquired, my understanding is that the systems were not in good shape. So maybe they wouldn't have ever been used again. If that's the case, I don't mind the Nt giving those chips new life.
What's the Zelda game at 26:00? Try is talking about NES romhacks at that point and it looks a lot like Link's Awakening but obviously that was on the GB not the NES.
Hi guys, i need some help here. When i plug my vga cable on the console (analogue nt mini v1), it turn the console off, the light turn off, so i cant play on a crt monitor, just using the hdmi on modern tvs. Any idea of whats happens? Tkz
I had a really hard time hearing the minor audio discrepancies between the NT Mini and the real NES hardware that were highlighted in this video. It was nowhere near as obvious as the differences between the FDS expansion audio using a real FDS vs the simulated FDS expansion audio generated by the NT mini when using roms. It was also not as noticeable as the difference between real NES sound and the sound produced on the NES Classic mini that was highlighted on the episode in which that system was reviewed. Do you know if Kevtris addressed the audio issues at all with later firmware updates? I own an NT mini myself but my original NES no longer functions so I unfortunately can't make the comparison for myself.
I'm sure you guys probably know this but if you don't, try cleaning your carts with "Brasso". I've been using it for years. It works much better with q-tips than alcohol. It a metal polish and works great!
Brasso should never be used on cartridge contacts because it leaves a varnish that can't really be cleaned off, and that stuff gets into the cartridge slot and gunks it up. If you do want to use an abrasive cleaning method (which is what brasso does), then there are much safer alternatives that go beyond what a q-tip and alcohol will do. The first step beyond the q-tip should probably be a soft eraser (I like to use a white Staedtler eraser, never use the rear of a pencil since the metal can scratch the pins). Beyond that there are more aggressive approaches, but those are for a last resort only.
Your right brasso is a mild abrasive cleaner and shouldn't be used in every situation, but it does the opposite of what your saying. It removes the tarnish that builds up on the copper pins on the cartridge. That's why the games quit working. That greenish/black stuff that comes off on your q-tip is the tarnish from the copper pins. You'd have to clean the cart 100's of times very aggressively to wear the copper plating off the pins on the cart. Brasso is designed to clean that tarnish off. It's not just for brass as the name implies, it's for multiple types of metals. As for gunking up the cartridge slot you'd have to be pretty sloppy with it and not clean off completely to do that. Everyone has their preferred method for cleaning carts. I've been using it for well over 10 years to clean carts and I've never had an issue with it.
I looked up the DeOxit because I'd never heard of it before. After doing some reading from the company's website it essentially does the same thing as the metal polish except uses a chemical reaction to clean instead of an abrasive. WIth both methods you are still taking the tarnish off the pins. As far as being specifically designed for electronics, a company can label anything like that. I can do some testing at my job and tell you if brasso is safe for electronics. Contrary to it's name Brasso is actually for several types of metals not just brass. It's good for Aluminum, Brass, Bronze, Chrome, Copper(which is what the pins are on a NES cart), Pewter, and Stainless
I consider myself a purist when it comes to playing my games on original hardware but even I dont mind removing a tiny layer of metal on my NES games pins. I use a product called Mothers Mag & Aluminum Polish which is similar to brasso on all my games and I can say it does wonders on cleaning the pins. Ive cleaned all my games with it and ive never destroyed any games using it. I only use a tiny amount, enough to remove all corrosion and grime, all games play perfect on first try, never had to blow on my cartridges or use alcohol & qtip. I honestly dont understand why people assume these products will destroy the games unless of course u put too much and then scrub the hell out of the pins. Sooner or later, purists are gonna start charging higher prices on games just because they claim the pins have never been Brassoed, siigghh OCD collecting at its finest.
I invested some money into a FPGA machine, the Mist, and after a while the updates stopped happening. So the concept is great, but the machines are highly dependent on the people programming FPGA, and they are much less of them around vs emulator programmers.
+PhilsComputerLab [Try4ce] I've been curious about the MIST for the old PC systems. Would you say those cores are mature enough to be accurate and reliable even without further updates?
The cores I spent the most time with are the Amiga and C64. They do work, but there are compatibility issues if you try enough games and especially demos. The games that work, are awesome though. It outputs PC VGA, and if you cnnect a PC CRT, the image is very nice indeed.
is this that bad of a value proposition? if I wanted to mod my NES, wouldn't it still cost me upwards of $300? And that's dealing with my old NES with its shoddy connectors and all that. Maybe I'll get something like this after I make my first million...
True, but you also need to consider that Retro USB's AVS cost lest than half the price of the Analogue NT mini and they're both pretty much the same thing.
Lassi Kinnunen sure, if you don't mind tacking on another 120$ for a flash cart and not having perfect compatibility. the AVS has known compatibility issues and the betas only trade some problems for other problems. the NT mini has analog video output, way, way more comprehensive sound and video options, perfect compatibility (even my fdsstick works), the digital expansion sound options for Roms, and direct ROM loading with more compatibility than the Everdrive and Powerpak. and on top of that there are 8 entire other consoles this thing can currently play with mapper support for all the commercially supported games out of the box.
Cray Elliott okay, but this guy is comparing it to HDMI modding your NES, which you wouldn't get any of that stuff with just an HDMI mod. If all you want to do is play you NES games in HD with perfect compatibility(I don't know what the hell you were talking about) then the AVS is a pretty solid choice, Even if you add the cost of a flash cart on top of the AVS it's still quite a bit cheaper than the Analogue NT.
Gradius 2 crashes. Xexyz crashes. Holy Diver has issues in stage 4/5, no green stripe carts work. Issues with repro carts. Issues with the everdrive n8 on the newer betas. Even krikzz has stated that the console does not work like a real nes. Beyond that there's physical incompatibilities like no light gun support and no microphone support. Sure many of these could be addressed by a firmware update but it's been pretty slow so far.
i agree with fonarte no point, none of the supposed new stocks have arrived in shops, at this point i dont think they ever will my view is that the hack has killed the classic, maybe the hackers should have sat on it for a while, i will bet that if ver2 ever hits shelves the firmware will be locked up tight and usb will be missing or disabled. i gave up on mine put it back stock and sold it on ebay, i will continue building small board retro systems, i wont waste time developing mods and such for a niche system. i might be wrong nintendo may release another batch of them but i doubt it, sad really scalpers win again.
Another top notch episode gents - well made visually and painstakingly informative. Couple questions though: any known issues with FPGA simulation compared to original hardware (examples of games), and any compatibility differences with other FPGA offerings? Thanks!
+frombauer [Try4ce] I don't have enough experience with some of those systems to be positive nothing is off, but I've seen Kevtris already make fixes based on feedback from forums. A lot of the times it's something specific only to a certain mapper or such. For example, I saw someone say something was wrong with Holy Diver, but he fixed it right away. Same deal with the Dragon Quest 1 and 2 sound issue we found. It's probably not 100% there in all cases, but with people actively using the hardware, it seems to be getting closer all the time.
+a b [Try4ce] It appears to be full range, based on how it looks on my TV. Limited range systems don't display true black with my current TV settings, but full range systems do.
That's not quite the whole story. There are some games that are incompatible with VGA adapters and even fewer with no support for RGB at all. Behar Bros make some adapters that will convert the Dreamcast's RGBHV output into RGBS for use with devices like the Framemeister.
[Try4ce] I would suggest going for the AVS as a more affordable alternative. The lack of pixel scaling interpolation on the Nt mini really hurts it in my opinion. The later Nt mini Noir has interpolation and other features more in line with the Super Nt and Mega SG, but I'm sure is even more expensive. AVS is only 720p, but it does have horizontal interpolation. And if you later pair up these devices with a HDMI-equipped 4K scaler, 720p and 1080p can be functionally the same with the right settings.
@@mylifeingaming Tks mate. I’ll have to consider a AVS. I’m also going to take a stab at different emulation on an NES mini via hackchi to see what kind of results I can get. I hate that seizure control strobing effect they implemented.
Is there a technical reason for the scanlines being thin in 1080p??? As I understand it, in 720p (3x vertical) each scanline is triple but 1 is cover by a black row of pixels and this look ok. On the other hand, in 1080p (5x vertical) each scanline is multiplied by 5 and 2 should be cover by black rows of pixels. This should make de black scanlines even thicker on 1080p than 720p (40% vs 33% of blackness added).... so why this isn’t the case??? Maybe only 1 row of black pixels is being added every 5 rows on 1080p instead of 2??? But why??
[Try4ce] With 4X vertical scaling, it would probably look too dark to darken two lines. With 5X vertical, darkening 2 lines sounds like a great idea. I'm sure it's not technically difficult or unachievable, but just hasn't been done.
I'm confused now. Does Kevtris' HD NES mod change the output from 60.08hz to 60hz? What happens if you use the RGB mod to a Framemeister then to HDMI? How does that handle the 60.08hz refresh?
***** Okay then. I understand, everyone else is doing a Switch review anyways. I just wanted to see it reviewed in your style, and see what you thought about it. And as always, it's a pleasure to talk to you 😁
As far as the 60.00 Hz vs the 60.08 Hz issue with analog vs HDMI output, is this an issue with the HDMI mod on the NES? Just wondering if I am lacking a true original experience with my HDMI NES mod.
itchyisvegeta yes. Any HDMI output has to do this underclocking to 60 to work. It's so small a difference I doubt a human could ever tell so I wouldn't worry that your experience is compromised.
+itchyisvegeta [Try4ce] This is actually something I'm curious about myself. I don't know if it has access to the hardware in that kind of way or not. Need to look into it/ask. I can say that a weird black and white image comes out of the composite port when using HDMI, so maybe it's operating normally?
Padriac So you are saying through my HDMI NES mod, i am actually playing my NES games 0.133333333333% slower? NOOOOOOOOOOOO! My speed running is ruined :( lol
+itchyisvegeta [Try4ce] Just got confirmation on this, apparently it is downclocked. I did not know about that, but it makes sense. TVs struggle with the OSSC when it's dealing with 60.08Hz from the NES and SNES over HDMI, so I imagine the Hi-Def NES would have the same issue.
Can anyone comment on how this might work on the ROG PG279 monitor? The ROG has speakers and I was wondering if the audio would work over HDMI on a computer monitor such as this? I have hte Wii HDMI converter and I never could get audio to broadcast on the ROG.
You should compare to Wii2HDMI as there are many users of that. I also just found out that my Wii2HDMI has a pin hole to change the signal to 1920 x 1080p. Been using it for a couple of years nearly and never checked it. Anyways, it looks great on my TV but I haven't captured footage yet to see if it's beyond an upscaled 480p. It's great for gamecube games and even a softmod WiiU with Nintendont is a viable option for GCN as well. Worth looking into.

Good luck, they have been sold out forever and I doubt they will make more. I am glad I bought mine when they came out a few years ago.
Damn, I would love a Neo Geo, Snes, or Saturn version of this....
My Framemeister from Solaris I pre-ordered last December will arrive Monday. Woohoo!!!! One of the last 'meisters to ever be made. :D

I got mine yesterday, but it kinda sucks at 480p.
I guess you missed out that they purchased enough components to continue producing for a couple of more years!?

I agree. A gameboy color adapter would be great for my collection, especially.
Adapters for what?
Jean-François Durocher an adapter to use game boy color cartridges on the NTMini? The core is available but just loads roms from SDcard.

Love your guys videos!
It sounds like they are describing the Mister when talking about this future multi console FPGA system.
20:22 it's really striking what a huge improvement S-Video is over composite
What game is at 4:52?
16:19 does anyone know if this eliminates the sprite flicker in Super Dodge Ball? It does not on my AVS.
Love your Channel. Awesome Content!
Thanks for the reply,
I actually own the AVS, and agree, it is pretty great, but was curious on your stance after playing both.
The jailbreaking and system cores are very interesting to me, and if it had a way to play original cartridges for the system cores I would probably not be able to stop myself from buying one! I also have an Everdrive N8 so I have that in case I need access to homebrew and hacks.
If only I had the money and space to get a CRT with component to enjoy such image fidelity.
Anyway great video as always!
This is the best thing I've ever heard of O_O
been waiting for this one! Woot.
So many smart people out there, where can I learn to get started to work with electronics like kevtris??
Anyone know the game shown at 4:38? They don't have it in their "Games featured in this episode" link :(
Tyler Baucom Spelunker for the NES.
Great video as always. How about a video in the future of setting up a PVM for the best image quality. I know there are many different pvms out there but a lot do share the same features and adjustments. Would make and great video and help some of us to get the best image available from our monitors.
I hope Kevtris releases a NES that’s cheaper like the new SNES. I can’t justify the $500 price tag of the Analog NT mini.
Wonder if the RetroUBS AVS system could get added cores via FW update!??
BlockABoots I think it can, they already added the color paulette option I believe.
What's the Zelda game at 26:00? Try is talking about NES romhacks at that point and it looks a lot like Link's Awakening but obviously that was on the GB not the NES.
[Try4ce] It's called Zelda: The Legend of Link.
Thanks Try! I'm downloading the patch from romhacking.net right now! :D
You're not crazy btw. Shifting the cartridge always helped for me on Famicom and NES. Even on SNES and N64. AND GENESIS.
Amazing video! Thank you so much!
Anyone know what game is playing at 04:30? I’ve checked the link to the lists and nothing is listed.
Metal Storm
My Life in Gaming Thanks! 🙏🏻
love your work
My wive's son loves it!
Now there's the NT Mini Noir that's back in action
Hi guys, i need some help here. When i plug my vga cable on the console (analogue nt mini v1), it turn the console off, the light turn off, so i cant play on a crt monitor, just using the hdmi on modern tvs. Any idea of whats happens?
Tkz
You deserve more views!
I really love your intros
I'm pretty sure audio fixes are mentioned in the 2.3 update, that came out a few days after this video was uploaded.
Lassi Kinnunen sure, if you don't mind tacking on another 120$ for a flash cart and not having perfect compatibility. the AVS has known compatibility issues and the betas only trade some problems for other problems.
the NT mini has analog video output, way, way more comprehensive sound and video options, perfect compatibility (even my fdsstick works), the digital expansion sound options for Roms, and direct ROM loading with more compatibility than the Everdrive and Powerpak. and on top of that there are 8 entire other consoles this thing can currently play with mapper support for all the commercially supported games out of the box.
it's not even a contest... the AVS is more affordable but gives a fraction of the functionality
Cray Elliott
okay, but this guy is comparing it to HDMI modding your NES, which you wouldn't get any of that stuff with just an HDMI mod.
Excellent test,thanx
I love your channel guys. The aesthetic is amazing and depth of research is very impressive.
Does anyone know the music playing at 8:00 ? I've been looking for it for months!
Conquest of the Crystal Palace
@@mylifeingaming Thank you!
Question. Are you guys going to cover the NES Classic Edtion modding at all? Just kind of curious lol.
+epicmartin7 [Try4ce] Probably not as a dedicated video, but who knows, it could be featured sometime in passing.
Thanks for the response! Definitely looking forward to more content you guys produce in the future. Really thought the video was highly informative!
Not much point IMO. At that point you might as well just build a Lakka box if you are going to play anything other than NES games
i agree with fonarte no point, none of the supposed new stocks have arrived in shops, at this point i dont think they ever will my view is that the hack has killed the classic, maybe the hackers should have sat on it for a while, i will bet that if ver2 ever hits shelves the firmware will be locked up tight and usb will be missing or disabled.
i gave up on mine put it back stock and sold it on ebay, i will continue building small board retro systems, i wont waste time developing mods and such for a niche system.
i might be wrong nintendo may release another batch of them but i doubt it, sad really scalpers win again.
+My Life in Gaming
Perhaps include it in your Virtual Console comparison?
Stupid question, but what game is the music at 6:36 from? I can't for the life of me remember.
I'm pretty sure it's the title screen music from Battletoads.
Does the Analogue Nt Mini output at Full RGB range over HDMI, for say use with a monitor?
+a b [Try4ce] It appears to be full range, based on how it looks on my TV. Limited range systems don't display true black with my current TV settings, but full range systems do.
My Life in Gaming why no rgb master class for dreamcast
+The KICK ASS ozzy Pridefulsaucerr
...Yet. Don't worry, they'll cover it.
because the best output for DC is VGA.
That's not quite the whole story. There are some games that are incompatible with VGA adapters and even fewer with no support for RGB at all. Behar Bros make some adapters that will convert the Dreamcast's RGBHV output into RGBS for use with devices like the Framemeister.
God I love this channel
Ooouf…. Shall I pick one up on the after market? Loving my Super NT, loving my Analogue Pocket
As I understand it,
in 720p (3x vertical) each scanline is triple but 1 is cover by a black row of pixels and this look ok.
What is the game at 10:39? I remember playing it as a kid, but don't know the name.
troyBORG Little Nemo
intro music is so good
Can you play Duck Hunt on a HDTV with an adapter for the zapper gun?
I'm confused now. Does Kevtris' HD NES mod change the output from 60.08hz to 60hz? What happens if you use the RGB mod to a Framemeister then to HDMI? How does that handle the 60.08hz refresh?
So are you guys reviewing the Nintendo Switch?
ericbazinga They're not, get the hell outta here.
+ericbazinga [Try4ce] Not specifically, but we are considering a video looking at Virtual Console across all platforms (including Switch).
***** Okay then. I understand, everyone else is doing a Switch review anyways. I just wanted to see it reviewed in your style, and see what you thought about it.
And as always, it's a pleasure to talk to you 😁
The switch is not having virtual console at launch! :O They probably will eventually though.
***** I didn't come here to be criticized for asking if they were gonna review a certain thing. And I'm not a douche
Man, Kevtris' Ultra FPGA machine will probably be the "be all and end all" of clone systems.
My speed running is ruined :(
lol
Got the new updated version coming 👊 😎
Lord Wario Your not the only one, damn thing destroyed my wallet but I’ve wanted one for years so I had to buy one
Kaito-J haha it’s an expensive hobbie. Will the included controller also have a receiver?
You should compare to Wii2HDMI as there are many users of that. I also just found out that my Wii2HDMI has a pin hole to change the signal to 1920 x 1080p. Been using it for a couple of years nearly and never checked it. Anyways, it looks great on my TV but I haven't captured footage yet to see if it's beyond an upscaled 480p. It's great for gamecube games and even a softmod WiiU with Nintendont is a viable option for GCN as well. Worth looking into.
You guys get bonus points for using Faxanadu footage in this video :)
This Kevtris is a legend.
