- Lowering MK8 Golf R on HR lowering Springs. In this video we ditch the "adjustable" lowering springs on the MK8 for lowering springs at a fixed height. In addition to lowering the MK8, we install camber plate on the front, and adjustable rear camber arms all from @034motorsport . Finally upgrading the MK8R wheels and tires.

I think I forgot to mention Wheel Specs ~ ZTF 18" ET45 9.3" powder coated Bronze Chrome wrapped in PS4s 255/40/18 tires. a touch of rub in the left rear, but that should be fixable. :)
why no love for OZ or Neuspeed (personal wheels of choice on my R/R32s)
Just a heads up: they changed the torque spec on the hub bolts (in the front at least) a few years back: Now it's 200 Nm + 90 degrees if the bolt is grey. 180 degrees if black.
Just realized you running a 255/40/18 not a 255/35/18, oh meaty!
@@SchwaboChannel Both are awesome. But I can only have 4 wheels on at one time HAHAH
@@HumbleMechanic I'd love to see some Neuspeed sponsorships on your channel, they are the one company I'll gladly support! Keep up the good work!!
I liked the zip tie to spring trick during install. Simple innovation. Love it.
My H&Rs have been in the box since March.. I’m on my 2nd MK5, the front knuckle assembly from changing them on my Rabbit has scarred me from starting the job on my Jetta. I need the LOW! This was the inspiration I needed. Cheers!
A strut spreader tool will also make your life easier
@@AvocadoNation I got one, lol. More of a lazy situation/remember the headache from the last time.
I like all of your content but I really enjoyed this one. The genuine dialogue on the process and products was funny. It’s nice to see the same frustration I have at times from someone who is a former tech 😆. You and Paul crack me up and I wish you’d bring back the cars with cocktails !
THANKS!!!!
I'm glad you got it all sorted out Charles..
As someone who just went through installing Racingline springs on my Mk8 R… your method would’ve saved me a ton of time! Well now I know in the future haha
I put H&R springs on my (wife's) 2014 A4. They ride more like stock than I expected!
Been using H&R springs or Cup Kits for years. Just always liked them more than coilovers for whatever reason. Currently I am using H&R Sport Springs on my MK1 Cabriolet.
I love all 034 Motorsports products…casting is amazing. Plus the rear bar and end links are amazing on my AutoX Mk7.5
Great job Charles and Eli👌👍😎
Thanks for sharing this.. Last night on my way home to San Diego..An Mk8 wants a couple of Pull on South Bound 5 Freeway..I don't want to but he was asking for it. I still threw a piece when he finally caught me on my exit.

Wow. Fun fact about camber changing toe. Always nice to see a different car being worked on other than American or Honda cars lol. Kind of takes away the fear in working on German or Euro cars. Cool vid dude!
That was me on carsandbids! I was fanboying to my wife about bidding on the same car as one of my favorite youtubers. Insane what it sold for, but congrats to the seller and winning bidder. Great content as always!
LOL NICE!!! That was so fun. But boy id have loved to get it at $38k HA
Great content. I just got some H&R lowering springs to put on my mk5 Rabbit. Glad I watched this video because I'll get to skip a few steps in the installation process.
NICE!
@@HumbleMechanic hi Humble mechanic , My name is Pedro I’m using my moms cell phone since I don’t have one .. I love your video just saw your channel today , I’m 50 years old and I use to be so in love with wanting to be a mechanic , longs story short , I got hit with some bad times and illness and severe insomnia !! thank you for your vids .. bless you sir
My experience with the original 034 "Dynamic and Camber" strut mounts for my 2018 R was not a good one. Harsh banging over sharp bumps, completely unacceptable for a new car at this price point. Issue completely cured by returning to stock mounts. To get my negative camber, I procured a set of Clubsport S spindles which added 1.0 degree neg camber and also installed Superpro LCA's with added caster. I have 2.2 degrees of negative front camber and great turn-in. Thanks for another awesome video. Interesting and informative as always!
PAUL?!?!?!?
I can’t wait to feel the difference as a passenger at wookies next year. As car was basically stoke this year. I haven’t driven a MK8 R yet but handled well when you was driving
HYPED to see you dude!!
If I lived near you I would have to own a GTI R and you would have to be my tech!
A note on suspensions, drove my steel spring non-active suspended SUV with plain Michelin truck rated tires and truly enjoyed the cushy ride on the hours long drive. Sometimes pampered is nice.
Those wheels look siiiick!
I always enjoy your stuff Charles, but that was particularly good.😂👍
Tech with a twist.
Thank you!!!
compressor tool is the scangrip canvik basic, can be found on ebay or through direct dealer.
I watch your vids for many reasons but that lil' knowledge nugget @12:00 was great. Thanks!
One minor criticism I'll make is an arrow or circle that called out the control arm/subframe contact would've helped me see it more readily. No biggie tho
I could certainly use some good suspension parts for my 2015 gti. Gettin a Lil creaky on over certain bumps so i gotta fix it soon anyway.
Thinking of swapping out my Adjustable H&R springs to either racing line or Neuspeed springs on my mk8. Hitting bumps in the current ones are pretty brutal.
the best channel on the youtubes!!!
Thanks!
H&R springs are by far the best
There is no "Best" just personal preference.
I love videos like this, I feel like I learn a lot from it! Thanks Charles! When my MK8 is out of warranty I would love to know how to get work done by you/your shop since I'm in the Raleigh area.
I'm so jealous of how good your wheel hubs still look. No lie, I had rust showing on the 45 degree face on right rear after 3 weeks. Got worse when I tried to touch it up, didn't feel like trying to warranty so, I got a can of matching color high-temp caliper paint, masked everything, prepped and painted both rear. Looks better than stock. I do have an open warranty claim w/ dealer on the rubber window trim which looks pre-aged all around the car. I'm just not feeling very lucky with mine. I see what you were talking about with the wear on the lugs.
Warranty wouldn't have covered that anyway. Plus you saved an embarrassing trip to the dealer, as they would have judged you for being "that guy".
I painted my rusty rotor hubs with BBQ black over two years ago. The car is outdoors year round and drives through winter road salt.
The hubs still look perfect

The bronze chrome was a great choice in color! Side note, I did see the bump stop was upside down during installation. Would that make a notable difference? I’m thinking no but I thought I’d let ya know. Keep up the great content!
Looking good. Found your channel a couple of years ago but for some reason i stopped watching,
So now i have a ton of content to watch.
I realy love the project with the turbo VR6. Would love to mod a car like that some day.
Glad to have you back!
I will watch this in 5 years time when I buy my 2nd hand mk8 gti😜
love the look man, hope to see it next Wookies ;)
you sure will!!!
The Bronze and Blue look amazing together...Meow
Thanks! Im loving it!
Actually the egg came first.
And the logical explanation is, that during the evolution the last step before an egg with a chicken inside was laid; the one that laid that egg wasn't quite a chicken.
Btw. Super bummer that the camber arms bumps the subframe - I'd complain.
Also - awesome video as always.
Yeah I reported back to 034. It’s all good. I knew there was a chance it would be an issue.
so lucky the ball joints arent riveted on haha awesome video bro
I’ve changed coilovers twice the MK8 so far 😂😂😂😂 I’m now back on stock suspension debating on my next setup…… I’m considering H&R springs, stock wheels, and Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2s for a starter track setup once the spring comes around
I gotta say stock has been really good!!!
Hey Charles, love the look of the R, I too am a fan of the "meaty tire" look. I'm hoping to get a similar look with my car eventually. I bet the vinyl you wanted was from Inoztek, I hear their wrap looks like paint.
There was a few brands I was looking at.. sadly none of them were available.
I would always go with the writing the right way up, but ultimately if it fits either way surely it doesn't matter as its still going to act as a progressive spring with the low rate end giving way before the high end?
I did the H&R springs a couple months ago on my mk8 R and found they are moderately stiff (comfort feels like what race used to feel like) and I bottom out on highway bumps sometimes and the cruise sensors freak out until the car starts again. Probably gonna get the KW DCC compatible coilovers in the fall so it will feel more comfy and not bottom out from the reduced travel.
are these already available?
Did you end up installing the KW DDC’s? I too went H&R springs (overly stiff and BOUNCY!!!) then installed Racingline springs (a little softer but still bouncy and I bottom out often like you), so now I am thing of going KW DDC. I would love to know how you like them.
@@chadwehner5053 Nope, still on the h&r's. Debating whether to do the KW's or move down to 18's
Nice, always learning. Thanks for the video. Makes it easier for DIY
Could do with a suspension kit ,how do I get lucky 😮💨😮💨
Love the channel dude awesome work. I have an 09 Jetta 2.5, what would be the best performance bolt ONS you would recommend? I want to be around 200-220 HP. Thanks for the content.
the squidward dancing definitely tickled me..love the video charles!
:P
I actually have a mk7 1.8t wrapped in purple Color flow
Hope to see an update on how everything feels with this setup
My absolute favorite tool for removing plastic clips is a paint can opener.
I like it!
What about headlight adaption after lowering the car via obdeleven and vagcom? I ended up going with the H&R springs as well on my mk8 gti.
Looks kinda like a FoRS with that wheel setup
Hi Charles - is there any video on recalibrating your ride height using a vag-com. I installed a set of racingline sport springs on my mk8 golf R.
Thanks for another awesome video. Interesting and informative as always!
I just got the Camster plates and rear control arm for adding Camber to my 2023 RS3. Excited to try them out at the track. Have you tested it out yet? Any advice on alignment? I was thinking I should be at about -3 degrees front, so I'll probably try about -2 on the back. I also swapped from the staggered setup to 265 18" square.
I was not expecting to spit my coffee out when I clicked on this video 😆
BHahhahha I’m sorry.
Real quick question what is the "proper" way to reinstall a rear view mirror mk5 jetta, I busted my windshield from pushing too hard
Do you have to run the basic settings on the shocks when fitting new springs ?
its a good idea to do that. I covered it in depth in the other spring video. But I have heard of guys not doing it and being finetoio
Another fantastic vid Charles, glad you got the springs sorted. You did not mention the RCO ball joints or front and rear sway bars, are you not installing them? Looking forward to your thoughts on the camster plates.
The swaybar didn’t fit from mk7. The ball joints may happen in the future. 034 and I wanted to test one part at a time
It was great to see a smile from this change as opposed to the "I need a few shots" to make the anger go away from the last job. Did you change to lugs and nuts from wheel bolts or is this current VW design? Glad for the happy ending.
"I mean, that's just logic."
"Ow, honey! Stop hitting me! Ow!"
Charles, do you think it’s better/necessary to install the lug studs and nuts rather than just sticking with the factory or aftermarket bolts? Thanks
I know you mention the camber arm hitting the subframe when up on a lift then mention if you’re racing and pick an inner rear wheel up it could happen again. Wouldn’t the sway bar not allow the inner wheel to travel that far down since the outer wheel is acting as a torsion spring to the inner wheel? I could be wrong.
Great video! Do you have a recommendation for a shop in the Raleigh area that can install lowering springs and do all of the recalibration? I want to have lowering springs put on my '19 Arteon.
I love your work man. So detail oriented.
I have a question about wheels actually. If I change size from 18 to 19 isn't there a setting in the infotainment system for that also?
Anyway, the bronze wheels are nuts. All the mids you do on your cars are very OEM+ which is brilliant.
Side note. I used old cutoffs of steel brake lines bent into an S for holding calipers. Hang from just about anywhere saving the hoses. Although I see the bungie cord works, but for me, they never seem to be the length I need at the time...
I've used bungie cords... But they typically need wrapped around once or twice to get the length right.
@@jasono2139 Me too, and like I said, MY luck, it's either too long or too short. After the S hooks, I never went back, also S hook strong enough to hold Ford F350 ambulance calipers without sweating. Bungies never worked well on those.
@@r.weaver3769 yup, even on my Passat, the bungies looked a bit sketchy when holding up the calipers.
@@jasono2139 Ultimately it's about preserving the hoses from damage. I've watched techs just hang calipers by the hoses, when I say something, they say, "Gives me something else to sell the customer". Makes me sick.
@@r.weaver3769 I honestly wouldn't be surprised by that... I've encountered at least a few mechanics who couldn't care less about doing a good job if it meant finishing the job faster (to service more cars), cutting corners to avoid using more expendable materials (grease, new fasteners, steel brushes), or replacing marginally worn parts so they could take a cut on the new ones.
Much better, having "Lowered" the yellow springs back in to the original packaging.
After watching the 2x4 method and other ways I never thought of taking the whole knuckle and hub out. Do you have to get an alignment afterwards?
Lol I had the exact same issue on the H&R Springs on my BMW E38. I wonder if it's like that on all their springs.
all Mks use the same hex bit in the struts for the 21mm strut socket?? if you want to build a tool
What is the size of your front brake rotors?
Do you have to readjust the headlights when you lower it?
That 91 blue mightve came from my dealer
Why did you go with H&R versus Eibach German car German Springs just curious
Anytime anyone ask me which springs to choose H&R for these cars are my go to spring, they always sit perfect, and of course some spacers to finish it off, Ran them on my 7R
How’d you like them? Did you get the sport or the super sport springs? Thinking ab getting them, don’t really wanna dish out the cash for coils rn.
@@sethdavis6123 love em, did many track days on them, I believe they were the super sport
That wheel and tire setup is sweet...I'm curious as to what your thoughts are on lowering springs with stock struts/shocks...I see some people say no and others say it isnt gonna hurt anything.
It will almost for sure wear the suspension out sooner than if you leave it alone
My wife once told me, "do whatever you think is the right thing." Which to me meant buy it. Boy she learned her lesson. 🤣
HAHAHAAH
With the new h & r springs, do you get a light on or warning with the DCC? I’m wanting to pop on a set of those springs but I’m not sure about that issue. TIA
No lights at all
🤣 I was watching that auction.
It was intense HAHAH
I'm working on my second mk5 with H&Rs. The Rabbit took me all day. I'm tackling the Jetta tomorrow. What is the likely time frame this job should take for the experienced backyard mechanic?
mk7 and mk8 i think are going to be a lot like mk2 and mk3. really close, share a lot, but still different
EXACTLY!!!
Charles, I’m curious about the zip tie that you used. Is it just to keep that piece from moving around? Asking because I had these same springs installed on my Mk7 GLI and in the front I get this slight noise at very low speeds. Almost like a jostling. Would be interested in your thoughts given your experience with these springs.
Yea. As soon as I got the assembly together I cut it
@@HumbleMechanic any ideas on what might be causing this noise? It’s hard to describe without hearing it. Maybe it’s just how they sound, but it’s hard to imagine that. Probably just need to make the short drive up to Cary and let you take a look;) Thanks as always fir the great content!
Can you do a DIY dashcam install video?
Awesome video Charles. What SPRINGS combo woud you recommend for a VW Jetta MK4 2004 VR6 (2.8L 24v)? H&R or Eichbach? Also does 034 part control arm is available for a MK4?
I prefer hR and bilstein
034 does make them for mk4 too
Look at all that shiney newness. I'm used to rusty oldness. What are the rear camber arms for? Stock adjustment is enough ya? Assuming similar to my S3, These understeer so much, more -camber in the back isn't better. I'm only running -1 and its plenty.
If I we lived closer, I’d Plastidip your ride for free! (I’m the guy on FB who’s mk VI R was yellow, lime green, pink, and nardo gray)
What tool is used to calibrate DCC please
Do you have a list of unique tools /sizes needed for doing it this way by any chance? I'm trying to make sure I have the right sizes of everything before I start! So far I've got:
24mm 12pt axle nut
21mm strut nut socket
7mm allen for strut
Spring compressor
Ball Joint Separator
where did you get your spring compressor at?
Did I miss a video on a stud conversion? Does the mk8 come with studs?
I haven't put the video out on it. We need to shoot a new ending based on what I found after installing them.
Are you going to VW Fastivus this year? Also buy that spektrum ! 🔥🔥🤣
Im not sure just yet. I can only look a few events ahead.
During the video you mentioned “One Time Use Bolts” only, can you share which ones are one time you only when replacing the springs on an MK8? I have a GTI & I assume they’re the same with an R. Thanks.
Sadly almost all of them are on that job
Would those adjustable/non-adjustable springs work on my 2015 Golf Sportwagen TDI?
I don’t think we the wagon the rate will be right
Charles, how do the springs work with DCC?? Have a 21 Autobahn GTI and want a subtle drop but worries about messing up the DCC struts. I’ve heard you can reprogram it for lowered springs?
still works fine. just a little stiffer. I tried to recalibrate my DCC and it wouldn't take. I think I have a sensor issue. it drops out when the car is off the ground. The Left front one I think.
@@HumbleMechanic appreciate the reply!
Do You or anyone you know have experience with the Bilstein or KW DCC compatible coilovers? The $3000+ price tag is crazy but if it functions like oem with adjustable lowering I’m tempted to go that route as opposed to possibly shortening my stock strut lifespan.
Or even possibly the DCC cancel module from KW and Ohlins with a standard coilover
I can see you have DCC. No risks of damaging DCC/shock absorbers with lowering springs ? Thanks 🙂
I think you and Paul should wrap the car yourselves in a nice British racing green.
I got purple film for the Miata.
Did you replace all the hardware during the install? Because they are TTY bolts everywhere?
No I reused a lot.
I have these blue H&R lowers springs on my S3,with the original shocks, and the car absolutely perfect.
But you ,why you replace the adjustable ST spings with these?
(in my opinion the adjustble option on a lower spring is very important.
For example on s3 the H&R springs(29100) lower the car same front and rear, and this looks like it's loaded with 2 people in the back-at least with the original S3 wheels)
I love the idea of adjustable. but when you have to take them out to adjust, it loses all the appeal of it.
Do they work on Mk3's? I need some new suspension bits for my mk3...
Nothing in this video will directly work on MK3. but im sure there are MK3 equivalent Goodies.
I jus noticed VW switched to Wheel studs, instead of lug bolts?
No I did that.
Why after you changed the spring and makes noise? How to prevent it?
proper torque is key. Also for me I added in some much stiffer parts. this will alsmot always cause noise
Diy purple mk8 purple wrap video
Its going to be the Miata! LOL
😎👍
Where did you get those spring compressors?
The exact one is this ~ sonictoolsusa.com/spring-compressor-2500-kg/
A similar more affordable one is this ~ amzn.to/3uTzGge
They wrapping that in gold, my boy can do it a lot cheaper in FL
ITs probably going to be a SEMA car. so I needed sills done and all that too.
