also Alison 3:48 I will say recently my therapist asked for me to connect with her more about my spirituality and I said I didn't feel comfortable talking about it more with her cause she wasn't also sharing her experience with that, whereas when I go to meditation group or speak with my meditation coach they do share and it helps me feel connected about our experiences in a way I can't do in therapy
Since you've been to grad school, why wouldn't you do additional training to be a couples therapist (as someone who is also working towards registration as a therapist)? There's a reason why therapists have all these supervision requirements... there is a lot of harm that can happen and having someone with more experience to check in with is really important. I get the issues around self-disclosure, but therapists can self-disclose, they just can't make the session about them. Also, the reason therapists are more of a guide is to build autonomy in the client.
probably it has to do with therapists’ low pay (at least in the beginning) and all the red tape with insurance. I’m sure a coaching business is much simpler in many ways, I don’t blame her.
Wanted to say this as well. It seems like she rationalized it a dozen ways in her head (cheered on by Gabe and I’m sure others), but whatever the good intentions and understandable critical eye towards her field, she has to know it flouts accountability structures and institutions that exist for good reason. This is such a problem across so many fields right now, so it’s very disappointing to see.
One would assume that someone wouldn’t sign up for coaching from Allison if they didn’t trust her. Like Gabe said, she has a village full of people who trust her enough to listen to the advice she’s been offering for free all these years. And she’s not hiding the fact that she’s not a licensed therapist. Allison is not forcing people to hire her. Whoever does is assuming that liability.
Even if there is no formal supervision happening in this less traditional model, as a mental health expert I am sure that Allison has mentors and colleagues who she could check in with if this was ever needed in a particularly challenging or difficult situation. I am normally wary of coaching in general, but I have been consistently in awe of the brilliance that Allison possesses around mental and emotional issues. In my opinion, she has a way of analyzing and breaking down issues to a deeper level that goes beyond what the vast majority of therapists can offer including most of those who I have worked with. I am so excited to see she is offering her skills to people and I believe she will transform lives significantly for the better, regardless of what it is called or the extent to which it breaks from traditional structures. In my eyes, her explanation was an appreciation of some of the flexibility this route will offer her which plays to her strengths, so I think that is amazing.
@@WisdomGirlLove123 But she is giving off the idea that it will be equally helpful. Someone who sees her stuff online might not know the difference and think that her using her own personal experience as the base of her knowledge is even better then what a licensed therapist might do. But there is a reason licensed therapists don't base their work on personal experience. They base it on the scientific evidence available. The fact that the therapist is licensed and the profession regulated serves mostly to protect the clients from harm. If you are basing this decision on what would be best for the client, there is no reason to not do the extra work and get licensed.
wow the outfits are OUTFITTING this video I'm still watching but just wanted to comment that I appreciated hearing about Allison's journey and decisions around credentialing in the mental health field. I recently earned my MD and decided to not get credentialed to practice. There's a lot of good work being done in both the fields of mental and physical health by people who have decided to take less conventional routes. It sounds like this option fits well with you. I'm still figuring out what fits best for me. I'm excited to hear more about this development! I'm intrigued!
Can one thousand percent agree with all of this!! I’ve had a couple sessions with Allison already and it’s exactly what I’ve been looking for. It’s like an extended international question 😂Love the discussion about the difference between therapy and coaching!
Great question! Nothing and that's the beauty of it. We can touch, if we're qualified. I know a Polish coach who is also a licensed psychologist and published writer. I know a BDSM-niched fin-domme who was recently featured on Allure Magazine. I offer my clients with a meditation at the beginning of every session to self-regulate for clarity. We pinpoint what the client actually wants through the PLISSIT/MEBES model can provide guidance to an essual concern, such as LD (low desire), SDSD (social dating and sex deficit/fancy word for inexperienced or insecure), and with my BS in biology Minor in human sexuality studies, multi-certified sex educator AND ess working, I am able to help those who want to heal their essual trauma. I'm grateful for my clients, mentors, and peers!
I love this so much!! Allison, I think you'll be a fantastic Relationship Coach and this trajectory in your career feels so right. I'm excited for you and am glad to hear you're already seeing clients. I love your reasonings for becoming a coach instead of a therapist, even as someone working to become a licensed therapist one day! 😊
so so happy for allison this really makes sense for her considering her life journey, my only fear would be to give people advice without knowing enough back story and that not going well, but i know allison would aways care to not make definitive opinions on someone's life. In brasil the term coaching has a bad rep for being used by people who dont have enough knowledge on things and pretends to have all the answers and for the lack of science backing in most of the coaches. not related to the coahing but it feels weird/wong seeing gabe using the word b*tch so casually, doesnt sit right
I am almost certain I'll be hiring Allison one day! I'm not in a relationship right now so I don't really need it but based on my last relationships I'm sure issues will come up one day that Allison will be a great person to help me work through. Help with communicating my mental health issues and needs probably would have been really helpful in my previous relationships 😅
Is this only for romantic relationships, or would you also consider coaching people struggling in queerplatonic relationships, platonic partnerships, or other personal relationships? (Not that I have any of the above, just curious!)
Hey Allison! There are a lot of differences between unlicensed coaching and therapy that you failed to mention here that I find a little concerning. You have no ethical oversight as an unlicensed coach, no regulatory body to be accountable to, no standards to uphold yourself to. Please be transparent!
yeah actually I reaöööy wish allison would give us more details on her strategy on dating cause what apps did she use what types of conversations did she have etc
Gabe, you bite your nails a lot. Do you find yourself getting sick pretty often? If so, maybe that's why. Apologies, it's the only thing i could focus on watching the video. I retained nothing from the video. I need to watch a second time and just listen to it. 😀
Coaching is about where are you today and looking forward to the future, instead of therapy which is digging into the past and "working" towards a different version of yourself. Coaching takes you as you are today
I love how protective Gabe is of Allison. Their friendship is just the best
Congrats Allison on your next career chapter!
I've never been this early to anything in my life, had an urge to watch old JBU videos, what a gift! Go Allison!

can't wait for the romcom about the couple who gets together through their relationship coach!

also congrats allison!!

I did see a licensed therapist but it was relational therapy so we were both sharing and I got to know him really well which I loved!
I want JBU-merch that says "every business needs a bouncer", please. :DDD
What kinds of ethical oversight is there in lieu of a professional license?

I mean she’s not doing therapy, she’s doing niche coaching and branding it as coaching which is different from therapy
I love this so much!! Allison, I think you'll be a fantastic Relationship Coach and this trajectory in your career feels so right. I love that Gabe is trying out finger waves, the hair style really suits him!

oh my god this channel is still going? that actually makes me so happy
was this the body scrub with the outrageous hot and cold water spurts??
lol “eureka! no way my logistical concerns of coaching could be any worse than this water massage!”
LOL i think that was in italy on her honeymoon
I’m so proud of Allison!!!!!!
I did a double take at the thumbnail thinking you were your mum !! Excited for you
What a joy to see Allison on her way to becoming the next Dr. Ruth 🥲

A, your lived experience is part of your expertise!
Is this only for romantic relationships, or would you also consider coaching people struggling in queerplatonic relationships, platonic partnerships, or other personal relationships? (Not that I have any of the above, just curious!)
the second I get a boyfriend I'm booking a session 😂💓💓
Excellent sock choice, Gabe.

Good can you please fix me 31 and never had anything close to a romantic relationship 😢hate my life
I was gonna give a thumbs up...but I wanted it to stay at 420.
Yeah Gab you've gotten therapy from Allison nearly for free for years come on give her advice a chance!
would you accept clients who have mental illness?

There are therapy models that also focus on the present and future. It doesn’t always dig into the past.
Actually therapy can do both.
