Around a year or two ago LEGO put out a poll to gauge what things Technic fans wanted from Technic. A ton of people, even non-BIONICLE fans, said they wanted to see less Technic cars, and more Technic animals. I think it's entirely possible the next "evolution" of Technic will be the Rahi coming back with all the modern building techniques.
@@rileyyyyh Well that's kinda complicated and really has two main answers. You see LEGO has been doing a lot of Technic sets with cars for the last decade or so. This has created a problem where people who have collected Technic for a long time already have all the cars they want, and those that are new to Technic don't have much variety to choose from/things to get them invested in the theme in the first place. When LEGO saw this decreasing demand for cars and increasing demand for more variety in the lineup (alongside poorer sales for those cars) they made a poll asking what people would buy even though they stopped buying cars. The majority answer to that poll was Technic animals. (something we've got like, 1 promotional set with alternate skins for in the last decade.) The way LEGO's production works is they have a limited/fixed amount of sets they can produce for a theme each year meaning just adding animals into the lineup doesn't really work, they'd have to cut some of the cars to make room. Even if you had room in the lineup, wasting a slot on something someone isn't going to buy (more cars) doesn't make sense anyway. So the two reasons for why you'd need less cars for more animals are: 1) It's what people say they want and are willing to buy. (demand) 2) It's the only way LEGO could handle that production. (supply)
I really like the earlier skeletal look, you can see the mechanics and get at it easily, which for somebody like me who loved technic for its mechanical aspect was great! debugging why some change you made to a set doesn't work is so much easier without panels
I wasnt around forcearly technic but that is exactly the appeal I see. They never got a replacement I suppose? Imo new technic is too dense to really focus on mechanics, it feels more looks appealing, as in the finished model overwrites the mechanical functions
@@NickonPlanetRipple For many people that’s also the appeal of the car chassis sets. If the cars have a bunch of bodywork on them, you can’t get as good of a look at how they work, but the car chassis are purely the mechanical parts of cars, nothing more. The supercar and the set before it at least had enough gaps in the bodywork to look through. Modern sets look good on a shelf, but all the cool mechanisms are hidden away. Sometimes you can’t even see the pistons moving with the hood open :(
The way I saw the combination of System and Technic was the combination of Form (System) and Function (Technic). While both are pretty good by themselves, when combined they make amazing sets.
My dad always used to tell me how growing up in the 70s he would build Crector sets and Meccano, and mix it in with his lego sets to make all kinds of cool things. Looking at all these old technic sets really have that same look, and for the first time I'm realizing that Lego was trying to enter into that mechanical building toy market!! In hindsight, that's pretty ingenious, and it's wonderful how it's expanded into things like complicated system builds with technic mechanisms or structure holding it together, or the eventual creation of Bionicle!
As a kid, I got a lot of second-hand Lego sets. Wound up with about half of a Technic Guy, and my little brother noticed the ladder pieces from some of our castle/adventure sets could be attached to his hips so we gave him a stack of ladders to use as "legs" - he also had only one arm. We loved how expressive and flexible he was (same reason we liked classic skeletons) and generally used him as comic relief in our collaborative Lego stories.
I always loved when Bionicle had vehicles, they were purely made out of technic parts. Sometimes Lego makes Technic sets that are just the scale for a matoran or a medium sized Toa, so you could pretend that it was always their riding vehicle. Best ones are those motorbikes, they usually come with axel handles, easily attaching socket hands connections of Bionicle builds.
Personally, I don't have a problem with the large scaled Technic licensed cars, in theory. I like the thinking that in order to get those products closer to looking like the real thing, new technics....techniques are needed to accomplish that goal, and that's fine, as long as said parts and techniques aren't used for JUST those licensed products. What I'm saying is, I just want Lego to make more things that while are inspired by real things(like real life cars) they put their own spin on them. An example of this is the Creator Turbo Track Racer(31070). Or if Lego insists on making more real life cars in Technic, base them more on concept cars that never saw the light of day, like the Ford GT90. Tangent aside, great vid! Also wish those Technic figures survived.
I've been fascinated with what the builder community has done with Technic. From exhibitions of connected rube-goldberg like contraptions, to working submarines which can broadcast real-time, it feels like Technic is equipped to push the limits of what Lego can physically do. "MOCs" for Technic can have truly impressive functions and capabilities. To some, it might not have the aesthetic charm of the standard bricks, but I feel it elevates the sets (including certain heroic figures) in a profound and meaningful way.
I find technic to be a very interesting part of lego. Especially with how techic parts have been integrated into more traditional builds, making larger builds more sturdy. Great content as always! Though on an unrelated note, it's kind of crazy to finally get a transformers Lego set. I just hope they do more with it. Perhaps a whole line at a more affordable price? Anyways, great video Nick! Love you're content.
I wouldn't put money on it. Hasbro has been extremely salty about having to share the Star Wars license with LEGO for the past 30-odd years, so I highly doubt they'll do much more than LEGO Optimus, given that Transformers is THEIR original property.
It was probably lines like Bionicle that normalized technic functions and gimmicks, which would then slowly be incorporated into other Lego system themes.
A perfect addendum to the "Old Technic" episode... whose name has a new meaning, I guess. It is rather wild how Technic has branched out and found its way into so many different subthemes, many of which already have their own dedicated episodes. On the note of the axles and everything being completely measurable in stud-scale... I didn't fully catch it myself until flipping through Throwbots manuals half a decade back. They really did have the part functionality all figured out.
3:22 Looking back on it, this transformer looks a lot like the old throttlebots and battlechargers Transformers had in the 80s. They transformed in a similar way with the wheel base on the bottom and the rest of it just standing up on the chassis.
3:30 A man makes a video on the history of Lego's Technic theme. This is how his brain shut down. N. R. is an adult male presenting to the emergency room with (I don't know how to finish the joke)
It’s interesting learning more about Technic & finally getting a proper episode about it. Like you said in the video, Technic is everywhere now in normal system sets as well as it’s own line. I just got the remake of the Galaxy Explorer & that has a surprising amount of Technic in it. I bet that’s something people couldn’t have imagined back then, Classic Space & Technic combining to make a much bigger & sturdier model.
They used long Technic bricks to make the monorail and roof supports in the Beta 1 Command Base (6970) in 1980. Even the Command Centre (926) used a Technic brick as a roof support in 1978/79. Classic Space used the occasional Technic element right from the beginning. The Mobile Rocket Transport (6950) used Technic parts for the wheels and suspension in 1982. But I agree that these are nothing compared to how Technic parts are used today.
When you pointed out that five years have passed since the last technic video I almost evaporated. It felt like I aged five years in two seconds. Nothing in this world makes sense. I'll be 65 in like two years.
Fantastic video, like always! I can't express how much I appreciate all the work, time, and energy you've put into these commentaries. 😀 As for the subject= Technic, as a line was, had been and always will be one of my favorite themes from Lego that ever got produced. For many years, I was mostly into action themes like Star Wars, Alpha Team, and Exoforce until later, when I got into Constraction via Bionicle G1. Technic was my number two theme growing up (behind the bonks). I had several and they were great challenging toys that above all else had great presence. Plenty of Technic still comes out that catches my eye, but I agree with ya Nick that some of the appeal comes from them being more toy than scale model. If I wanted a scale model I could build I basically would buy the proper kits like Revelle or beyond. But something thats fun and else world is an appeal I hope Lego trusts in again.

I've been hanging around long enough that I saw your first Technic video. Appreciate that you revisited the theme as I had felt you sold it short before. This was a worthy tribute. Especially that you gave it the credit it deserves for enhancing all the other themes.
The Technic Silver Champion you showed actually has the same chassis as the Lego Racers Williams F1. I always thought it was odd that they put the Williams F1 under the Racers line.
Modern LEGO technic plays it so safe its getting stale. Rarely any new parts(who needs them when you can just reuse panels), no constraction animals at all and so many licensed foreign car sets you'd think their target audience is rappers.
Man, my brain somehow associated technic men with k'nex, for some reason. I remember getting some power-miners-like rig with a grapple hook, that takes me right back..
I......... I think it would make things more confusing. Like, do the year-in-review specials count? Would they just add clutter and inflate the episodes Plus numbering them kinda creates a pressure to get more out more quickly than I can reasonably be expected to at this time.
You know I wonder how some Techic lego display would look. I try years ago with lego Digital designer to build a mad cat and spider with the normal bricks though it been awhile sence I've played with the program.
@@NickonPlanetRipple Can confirm, it's just normal green. May look different due to the other colours in the image contrasting. Also the colours in some Technic parts in the 90s were a little different (notably some things like hoses), so it could be that as well.
Considering castle, most of space, pirates, and technic have been crossed off the list of lego rewind i really hope we can one day get a town (preferably classic town) episode because its such a core piece of lego's history and while it would be one hell of a long episode just watching those old 90s town commercials makes me feel good. (Plus hot rod club is my fav set ever)
That would need to be another Patron-sponsored episode. I just can't think of much to say about Town. But hey, it was the same case with this until The Idiot pointed out a few things and got my mind spiraling from there. Sometimes it just takes a different perspective.

if they were ever going to do a real big bionicle ideas set, i think what i would want most would be a technic-built great spirit robot. it could be built out of pretty simple liftarms and would only really need to resemble the real thing in its face. it would be abstract enough to be picked up by the average joe looking for a cool big robot, but also could quell the onslaught of biofans that won't leave lego alone about somehow releasing bionicle again. besides, its the only real head-scratching set omission from g1 anyways. regardless, loved the new video!
I just rewatched all of Lego Rewind from start to finish, and I realized you never actually confirmed the series was coming back! It just sorta happened! You had the announcement of redoing some episodes that never actually happened, but not brand new episodes!
I really wish the Technic Guys still appeared in the Technic sets of today... Not gonna lie, I'd be a lot more into Technic as a line in general if all those giant vehicles had someone to actually drive them.

Thanks for the episode Nick! Those technic figs were pretty cool. I could see a world and lore with them in it similar to Bionicle.
Yessir the Lego technic guys are in the thumbnail
I have low key been waiting for this episode for some time. Thanks a lot :D
Modern LEGO technic plays it so safe its getting stale. Rarely any new parts(who needs them when you can just reuse panels), no constraction animals at all and so many licensed foreign car sets you'd think their target audience is rappers.
nice to see you back.
Man, my brain somehow associated technic men with k'nex, for some reason. I remember getting some power-miners-like rig with a grapple hook, that takes me right back..
Babe, a new LEGO Rewind just dropped.
I actually have all of these built in my living room.
Ypur video IS my lego collection!
Finally the respect Technic deserves. Great Episode Nick, but why did you ditch the numbering after the 2019/2020 COPPA crisis?
I......... I think it would make things more confusing. Like, do the year-in-review specials count? Would they just add clutter and inflate the episodes Plus numbering them kinda creates a pressure to get more out more quickly than I can reasonably be expected to at this time.
@@NickonPlanetRipple Yeah, that makes sense, keep up the good work!
Nick returns! 🥹
Only have a few Technic sets, i do really like the new Helicopter and Wheel Loader polybags though. Another very good episode.
Wake up babe, new Planet Ripple video just dropped
Thanks for all the great videos. I just wanted to tell you that I bought one of your books.
Thank you!
Welcome back Nick!
Finally, the return of the king.
People say that every time I release an episode, lol
YEAH!!!! i remember having the lime green motocross bike at 6:19, so sick!!!!!
Great vid! Can't wait for the Thomas The Tank Engine episode or the McDonalds episode!
It'll happen if someone pays for it like this one.
You know I wonder how some Techic lego display would look. I try years ago with lego Digital designer to build a mad cat and spider with the normal bricks though it been awhile sence I've played with the program.
Glad to see Nick and rewind back!
I do like The Idiot's logo, I think it's adoracute.😺
adoracute💀💀💀
Finally a proper Technic episode
Very interesting episode, I didn't know that those pieces originated with Technic, and didn't really have any idea what the theme was like nowadays.
I love the dark green at 4:22. Do we get that colour now?
I think that might just be normal green affected by the image...
@@NickonPlanetRipple Can confirm, it's just normal green. May look different due to the other colours in the image contrasting. Also the colours in some Technic parts in the 90s were a little different (notably some things like hoses), so it could be that as well.
3:10 if the legos don’t find you handsome, they shall at least find you handy
Considering castle, most of space, pirates, and technic have been crossed off the list of lego rewind i really hope we can one day get a town (preferably classic town) episode because its such a core piece of lego's history and while it would be one hell of a long episode just watching those old 90s town commercials makes me feel good. (Plus hot rod club is my fav set ever)
That would need to be another Patron-sponsored episode. I just can't think of much to say about Town. But hey, it was the same case with this until The Idiot pointed out a few things and got my mind spiraling from there. Sometimes it just takes a different perspective.
@@NickonPlanetRipple Maybe one day someone with cash to spend will splurge a bit and there'll be a episode. one can only wish although plenty of other favs have already gotten episodes lol
Ya, it's Rewind Time!
Also, how ya feeling about Lego Sonic? Personally would've preferred the original Mania-based pitch
Eh, I liked the set enough to get two and mash 'em together.
if they were ever going to do a real big bionicle ideas set, i think what i would want most would be a technic-built great spirit robot. it could be built out of pretty simple liftarms and would only really need to resemble the real thing in its face. it would be abstract enough to be picked up by the average joe looking for a cool big robot, but also could quell the onslaught of biofans that won't leave lego alone about somehow releasing bionicle again. besides, its the only real head-scratching set omission from g1 anyways. regardless, loved the new video!
Omg new Lego rewind let’s go
I still have couple technic guys on the shelf with custom made clothes and armor dressed up as a dolls. :P
loved it!
man, the v-22 cancellation was seriously a premonition for that boeing
Kind of a dumb question, but no less: is Planet Ripple 8 coming next year?
Yes. I'm 100 pages into it now, and will release it in march or April.
What are your thoughts on the new LEGO galaxy explorer set and the possible rumors/leaks of a Blacktron GWP set?
Basically flawless.
I just rewatched all of Lego Rewind from start to finish, and I realized you never actually confirmed the series was coming back! It just sorta happened! You had the announcement of redoing some episodes that never actually happened, but not brand new episodes!
Yeah, the 2020 special and the last April Fools were to see if I still had it in me, and to ease us back into it if I did.
@@NickonPlanetRipple awesome! Is there going to be a 2022 special?
lol I literally just ordered a throw bot today on bricklink just to try them out because they look kinda cute
9:09 anyone know what this giant tehcnic monster is?
I really wish the Technic Guys still appeared in the Technic sets of today... Not gonna lie, I'd be a lot more into Technic as a line in general if all those giant vehicles had someone to actually drive them.
Dan thunder can't be related to Johny thunder because Dan is a technic figure but Johnny is a minifigure
A man in Lego city presenting to the emergency room, bricked up
Yay Lego rewind nice
This is gonna be great
Yay new episodes
A man watched Nick on planet ripple, this is what happened to his right foot
I love technical legos it’s my favorite theme
Nice vid
It's funny that this video is coming out after the 2023 Bionicle leak is been out, given Bionicle super close history with Technic.
Yeah, but I've already made Bionicle and Technic (constraction) videos...
