I've been working pretty hard lately, so to take a break I spent some time catching up with your channel... and as I finished 2021's Rewind Special, I saw "Uploaded 30 minutes ago" on this one!? The analysis on the Bionicle GWP is plenty insightful, and thank you so much for the kind words on 21331 + its alt build 😭 The series in its post-"season" era has been fantastic and taking it all in at once has been a nice way to spend a lazy afternevening. Hope you're having a nice time watching the responses!
Thank you! I'm so happy this video got to you so soon. I couldn't talk about the Sonic set and NOT give you the shout out you deserve.
@@NickonPlanetRipple I have an idea for a Lego rewind episode Lego Club Magazine????
Love the content keep it up
@@NickonPlanetRippleyou could've made a "bricked up" joke for the gwp tahu
I really just hope that Tahu was successful enough to warrant more brick-built Toa. Gali is super important to me personally, so I’d absolutely be all over her!
If not, I’m building her myself!
Same! That would be awesome
An actual release of all 6 as sets would be amazing. But unfortunately I just don't see that happening.
I'd love a limited time release of the other 5 (or 6 with a no Takua) Toa with their respective stand for around $10 or $15 seeing how Tahu AND Takua were "valued" as a $17 set by the Lego website (even though it was impossible to purchase by itself).
Hopefully not as GWPs, though...
That thumbnail is beautiful
Strange. Most of the comments said 1.
Well he did choose a beautiful set
I love it how the length is 20:22. So fun. What a neat year for Lego, hope this next year is just as good.
Hearing about how the classic pieces from the OG Bionicle sets won't come back simply due to how bricks are molded and what happens when the molds' life cycle ends _is_ honestly a bit of a bummer, but I _am_ glad that this line is still getting so much love internally at LEGO, not just with these homage sets for the 90th anniversary but also with those neat little Easter eggs in the other sets.
Looking forward to that classic Space episode, Nick!
Honestly, the printed masks on the Tahu GWP kinda remind me of the Slizers and Roboriders almost. I'd honestly love to see a new buildable figure line (Revival of an old IP or original) take a similar route to that if we aren't gonna have unique masks or brick built heads.
Same!
Agreed!
Calling the 2.5 year curse the "Fermi's Paradox of Lego" made me bust out laughing. Such a perfect analogy
I definitely appreciate your wholesome and realistic take on the Bionicle GWP. It's an iffy business practice, but such a fun build
Avatar sets still feels like a fever dream
The best kind of dream.
I believe we are seeing the emergence of a new style: Neo-constraction. It's a sort of hybrid between the CCBS and the System Brick building. A fusion, as it were... sort of like how Bionicle's Matoran, Toa, and Turaga are a fusion between machines and organic material. How fitting.
I went from "meh" on the Bioncle GWP to really, really digging it now. Your passion and joy for it really made me realize... uh oh, me complaining that it wasn't made out of Technic pieces is the same argument as old AFOLs made when they decried Bionicle's original release. It IS a great tribute, and I can see that now thanks to your take on it.
Yes!! Nick really stated it in a beautiful way!
The feeling of assembling the Tahu and Takua GWP while listening to the MNOG beach chant was magical
Im so happy you keep doing Lego Rewind. I was so sad, when you retired it. It was one of my favorite shows on YT.
Well.... okay, but I hope this isn't the only thing I make that people like. That would be hurtful.
@@NickonPlanetRipple for me it is but Im sure there are fans of your comics too.
Excellent video. To think that not too long from now we will be hearing Nick analyze LEGO Dreamzzz... original themes are so scare nowadays. That will be surreal.
Rama and Deus Ex music? It’s a Game Dungeon miracle!
FINALLY another Game Dungeon/Ross Scott fan!
@@NickonPlanetRipple Another autistic one, too.
And a spec evo enthusiast!
P.S. blacktron did nothing wrong
Amazing video Man😎👍
Bricks or not, I am happy Bionicle got brought back in some form. Anyways, good job on the video, bro.
It's hard for me to put into words how well you put 2022 into words, and very importantly the state of Bionicle in its 2 recent tributes atop the multiple easter eggs. Once again, these are offerings from the individual *set designers* , sometimes consulting their senior staff for blessings on the references we see in sets, moreso than a corporate mandate to pander to legacy fans - that's saved for the 90 Years of Play sets and release windows of models like Forest Hideout or Blacktron Invader, I mean Cruiser. And as someone growing up with not only "standard" LEGO System, but also Technic, Bionicle, DUPLO, and even further Mega Bloks, BTR, dollar store building blocks and K'NEX, I have no purist takes on the System transition of Bionicle. When the game Bionicle Heroes released following the release of the Toa Inika in 2006, I attempted to build a section of the world using Toa Hewkii for scale. I didn't have many baseplates at the time so my one trusty X-Large baseplate did the trick, while also constructing 4 pillars entirely out of System to suspend a Technic-built roof, and a System door into a new area. Or as another example, in 7th grade social studies class, I built Macchu Pichu from South America for a school project. I used a combination of LEGO System bricks, LEGO DUPLO bricks and even some Mega Bloks when I ran out of brown bricks. Much like other toys, building bricks *can* and *should* coexist, from scaling in one brand, to 2 brands of similar perspective and clutch power. It's like Toy Story; the more diverse toys you bring in, the more possibilities for play, and Bionicle suits LEGO just as much as any other theme, even with a unique background and aesthetic.
Also, thank you for the shoutout at the end, happy to finally contribute a full episode after trickling in the original series, was a very fun and *bizarre* exchange of research and presentation! :)
2022 was a crazy year for humanity.
for what its worth, if the gwp Tahu ends up being a test run for a collector oriented wave of Bionicle sets built in the same style (albeit maybe with unique molds for masks), then I AM IN
legendary drop
This was a great Lego Rewind, and a perfect encapsulation of what I believe to be one of the more eventful years Lego has had in a bit.
I also agree on your view of the Tahu GWP. Sadly, I wasn't able to get it myself (Bricklink in the future?) but I do agree it's a love letter to the series.
Ironically, I also got to experience the joy of Bionicle again yesterday. I've had to pack up most of my figures, only keeping the original 6 Mata on display. In addition, it had been close to a year and a half since I'd gotten any new Bionicle sets. But yesterday, I was finally able to acquire my Bionicle grail: Umarak the Destroyer.
I was introduced to Bionicle through G2, and while I got Umarak the Hunter at release, his secondary form eluded me in 2016. Even though I adored the (admittedly flawed) design, I wasn't going to spend $100+ on it now.
I just so happened to find it for $30 yesterday, and building and posing him brought me immeasurable joy. It hit me for the first time in a while just how special Bionicle was and how much it truly means to me, and this video reminded me how much it means to others.
So thank you, Nick, for that and a great year of content. Here's to 2023, both in Lego and the real world, for whatever they may bring.
Let's goooo I've been waiting for this!
So my personal experience, I didn't grow up with Bionicle and considering my love for InseKtors and other early CG shows, the fact that this slipped me by is unheard of. When it came to the GWP, I was asked by a friend to get one for him through me, he did pay for the Tahu, and I did want to buy from my local Lego shop, but the biggest upset for me was the fact that the Galaxy Explorer DIDNT count for getting Tahu, which peeved me off since it was the main set I wanted, but had to pick other sets that I wouldn't have bought otherwise to get 2 Tahus (one for me and one for him).
Because of this, I have a Love/Hate relationship with GWPs, I am more than happy to get them, but the way in which I have to is another story, and my brother is STILL to this day bitter about not getting the Hogwarts Staircase GWP because of this. And I seriously hope that I don't have to reach as far when Lego decides to remake other Lego themes I love like Adventurers and Insectoids, or Prism forbid a remake or homage to the Cargo Railway in some way, that would kill me.
Hell yeah it is going to be a good day
I was definitely looking forward to hearing you talk about bioncle again!
(I also would love more bioncle sets/MOCs similar to the GWP) I’m not surprised that LEGO avatar is now your favorite licensed theme (way of water reminded me of planet ripple ngl;)
Thank you! Those 2 words mean more than you could ever know! Your videos are always amazing quality and are so positive in this negative world we live in today! Even in the Lego community, people are always so negative, so thank you for just appreciating what it is and letting us enjoy your amazing content! Can't wait for a classic space episode!
I’m happy y’all Bionicle fans got some recognition, praying Hero Factory gets something similar soon.
I honestly be down to have more brick build Bionicles, I think it is the next logical step for the theme
Lego Rewind episode 50 here we come, been here since episode 4 showed up in my recommended and I will stay until the end.
Hey, I would like to see Lego friends rewind, now that the theme is undergoing a major change
Growing up, I was more of a Bionicle fan than a brick fan. However, the GWP was absolutely delightful, and the opportunity gave me an excuse to buy some of the creator sets that have the ball and socket pieces. The tiger and seal (from the bunny set) were fun builds.
Gotta thank you for showing that beautiful titan mech in the video . I wouldnt have known about it otherwise and now its a must have for me . Great video all around .
Hey Nick, been watching your videos since Lego rewind season 2 and I just wanted to say I've absolutely loved this series, you've been doing a fantastic job and I really look forward to whatever is next, Lego or not.
That Lego GaoGaiGar looked so good! You would not believe what I'd give to have something like that as an official set, or just Lego partnering with Bandai to give us any Lego sets based on classic mecha. Stuff like Votoms, Macross, or The Big O would be a dream come true.
Lego Gundam would be a dream come true. Ive seen so many mocs giving it a go and they look amazing.
Man, I've been out of the loop! Thanks for this!
Okay now that i've finished the episode and my hype comments have ceased:
- Lovely rewind, it was a pretty good year for Lego in terms of sets (although not in terms of Prices... that spike hurt)
- I fell all over myself when you talked about the anime references in our mech sets, because it's been one of the things that's had me buying Lego recently. I bought the Ultra Combo Mech and got back into Ninjago specifically because of the GaoGaiGar/Dynazenon reference so that had me jumping up and down.
- I still have yet to buy Optimus Prime; I just tend to buy mainline TFs at this point. Set looks great though.
- Monkie Kid finally did what you said you wanted it to do and released two $20 beginner sets this year! I picked up the Dragon Jet and intend on getting the Combi Mech. Love the gimmick and love the designs
- Rumors of a Sonic theme in 2023 have me excited
- Can't wait for the next Planet Ripple volume!
- Bought GWP tahu immediately; loved him so much. I hope we get more brick-built Toa.
- Overall great video. I always love seeing your content cause it's made with so much passion for this. Here's to a good 2023!
Thanks for the great content as always!
2:06As for the Monkie Kid show… SEASON 3 WAS LEGIT THE BEST THE SHOW HAS EVER BEEN SO FAR!!!
agreed, although season 4 is looking to be pretty great!
@@toagali4169 It is, but I doubt it’s gonna reach/surpass season 3 for me
Monkie Kid show is the best Lego has ever had for their original IPs. I absolutely adore the Rise of the TMNT stretchy animation incorporated with Lego minifigure designs.
@@Bionickpunk Fun Fact: both Monkie Kid and ROTTMNT were made by the same animation studio (Flying Bark Productions)
@@MinecraftWorld1954 Yep, thats why I love the show, the studio behind it loves animation and its shown in the two shows they have created.
hell yeah excited for the upcoming lego rewind episodes !
I love these videos. The videography of your collection is perfect.
I do really like the avatar sets. the ground detail is beautiful.
I ended up getting the Tahu and Takua GWP second hand because I was flat broke when the announcement came out, but it was totally worth it. I think you did a great job showing off the highlights of last year (and early this year) and yes, while I'd prefer less GWPs and more direct from Lego sets, these little nods to old themes have been really fun to grab up and explore with. Looking forward to next episode, and congrats on (almost) hitting 50 Lego Rewind Episodes! :D
Ay, hes back! I've been watching your videos since 2019 and this is the first time commenting on one. I feel motivated to do one thing rewind considering the amazing bionicle stuff we had this year!
Always delighted to see one of these. I'm aware of some of the sets that come out, but I especially love hearing you talk about stuff that's not on my radar at all, like Monkie Kid.
2022 was quite a year for Lego, thanks for making it awesome
I want to thank you for making this series and congratulate you for how well it is presented. You really succeeded in your attempt to cover retired LEGO themes, in a way that revives the nostalgia of old fans while satisfying the curiosity of new fans, all while covering a variety of topics beyond the individual sets.
Rediscovering your channel a few months ago during an admittedly pretty depressed time in my life got me nostalgic for a time when I wanted to be a creator. So I'm doing that. Thanks for doing your self-promotion of Planet Ripple, Nick. It made me think about the stories I could tell and who I could reach out to with them. I wouldn't have found your channel those couple of years back if I wasn't trying to remember which Alpha Team and Rock Raiders sets I had growing up and I'm glad to see you're still out here making content!
I learned from your series that hidden side was retired since I wasn't really deep into Lego at that time but always thought that theme was nice. And since their retirement they only got cheaper in most cases so I bought a lot of them and that got me into Lego again. I have since build the monkie kid city plus hide out and the bigger ninjago city sets but hidden side remains one of my favorite themes.
So I just wanted to say thanks for rekindling my Lego passion.
Amazing episode as always Nick! It was quite funny, and I loved getting your insight on everything, especially the avatar sets and Tahu GWP. I really respect how you try to understand all angles of the situation before criticizing what LEGO does.
Been here since the 4th Lego rewind glad to see the 50th episode. Hope all goes well for you.
At least I know Nick is someone else who likes bricks AND Bionicle bones
I have been so excited for this!
1:25 *war flashbacks*
I've never seen the alt builds of the Sonic set before... now I want another one
newer '22 stuff shown is super cool....black cruiser's a must. thanks for sharing all of that hard work. awesome hardware....custom moustache add's an even grander layer of authenticity, familiarity.
Your beard looks sick btw
Very nice use of the Rama soundtrack for the Bionicle part, gave it a very strong nostalgic feeling.
Hurrah! New Rewind! Can’t wait to watch!
Ngl nick, i wasn't old enough to get those system sets, now that i kinda count as an adult i can finally buy those sets. The space line is my go to. It looks outstanding. Like dear god. The detail. The castle one is a must have in my book.
Another great special
I have waited for this moment
loved this video a lot :) thanks for the awesome content
Another great episode! And I’m excited for what is to come.
On what you said about stickers I’ve been making my own custom stickers for sets and MOCs. The Bionicle system masks are definitely stickers I want to make next. Once I have a good amount of ideas made into sticker sheets I want to open a online shop to sell them.
I’ve already color swapped my 2022 jedi starfighter to dark blue with custom blue and gold decals.
man it's nice to hear that rama music again
Looking forward to your Classic Space ep. If I’ve kept track, you weren’t around for it, so it’ll be really interesting to hear your take.
Thanks for this! The Lego community has a tendency to him and hah at everything these days. Nothing this year was so bad (other than those darn price increases). I for one am loving all these callbacks to LEGO's rich past. Life on Mars reboot when? Great Video.
Can’t wait for your classic space episode
7:22 Didn’t know that Nick was a Specbio enjoyer before
Very happy with the Exo-Force refrence!!
i love watching your lego rewind videos, seeing these past themes is always a treat
idk if you realize this but theres a lot of themes you skimmed over in past rewinds that would work as full videos or at the vary least filler ones ^w^
personally i wish you'd cover power miners and mars mission as those sets blew my mind as a kid
I have considered making a Mars Mission episode because my thoughts about that theme have changed over the years. I don't have anything to say about Power Miners that I didn't back then, though.
@@NickonPlanetRipple tbh if you end up doing a rewind on mars mission id be super happy ^w^
keep living your best life my dude and thanks for rekindling those old memories
@@NickonPlanetRipple Man, Mars Mission is such nostalgia for me. If you ever get round to covering it, I'd be well chuffed.
It seems that every year that ends with “2” happens to be the most weird or just really big for lego
Can't wait for a New classic space episode!
Well.... not exactly new. I never made a proper "just" classic space episode. I mostly touched on it in episodes mainly about other things.
Love this video! ❤
Can't wait for the 50th episode milestone, cya then you mighty LEGO Maniac!
2022 was the year I actually got back into Lego. I had been a massive fan of Ninjago as kid, but over the years I kinda just felt detached and most of my Ninjago stuff got lost or given away once i lost interest. I was at my father's friend's son birthday party and he wanted me to build this Speed Champion set with him. It was the first Lego set I had built in years, and it felt amazing experiencing it again. After that I fell into a rabbit hole of how Lego was nowdays, and the best part was seeing how Ninjago evolved over those years. Bingewatching it on Netflix and seeing the seasons I never saw as a kid was so amazing to see. I have Lego Rewind to thank for making me completely hooked on Lego again, not just Ninjago but other themes like Bionicle and Monkie Kid. I'm excited to see what else 2023 has yet to bring and get my hands on those new LMK sets, since I became a huge Journey to the West fan and that Tang figure has a FRICKING GOLD LACQUERED HEADPIECE that blew my mind when i saw the pictures! Thanks Nick!
man re-watching this already, a great channel, love the chima box in the background XD
anyways imagine what lego could do with chima now, i can only imagine the eagle spire being fully brick build :0
I call that my wall of history.
@@NickonPlanetRipple it sure is!
That creator tiger looks.. weirdly intimidating. Even by tiger standards.
I certainly enjoyed this year for Lego....But 2023 is going to be something incredible
A crazy year
My favorite set of 2022 is the Galaxy Explorer.
Such a good remake of the original.
No prints and brick built features like the side thrusters using the buckets and the arrow using a Nexo Knight shield.
Always fantastic stuff Nick!
Thanks dood!
Happy 50th Rewind! 🎉
Okay I've had the UNATCO ambient theme on the head for weeks now and now you do this episode did I stumble into a conspiracy?
Jokes aside, I'm glad that Blacktron and Bionicle are back, the sets themselves are simple, but the fact that they'll inspire a new wave of mocs for a long time is what brings me joy, I can't wait to stock up on bricks and make my own Lewa moc...
Also Damn that full set of Brick toa Mata in the same style of Tahu 2023. That is my dream!🙏💖
One thing I noticed/appreciated with the Bionicle GWP was that all the sets that qualified for it were original Lego IP, not license themes; as Bionicle was THE Lego IP, the original theme that saved Lego, I appreciated this!
My Bro just got the Ghost Rider set today and built that Exo Toa. It's pretty awesome! I like how a lot of people are wanting to make the Boxor now too. (probably can do it with the Ghost Rider set tbh)
Looking forward to fan made mask stickers!
I wish I had more room for Legos.. I'd consider getting some AVATAR sets. they're pretty neat looking.
Well I conveniently just built a baby space version of the 10497. Another great vid!
everyone's all talking about bionicle and its GWP and what it entails. but. surely i cant be the only one looking forward to a chima GWP or something of the sort. right? being someone who was born in the late 2000's. i had the chance to get it all in-stores. but i wasnt into lego back then. and by the time i was. i had either completely forgotten about it or it had long since been discontinued. i love the idea and the builds. so seeing some sort of homage or otherwise revival of it in a modern style would be real damn nice. since i didnt get any of the sets back in the day. i could live a dream i could have done long long ago and open a chima set in the modern age. since bionicle is what lego's bringing back after all this time. and the line came out... somewhere in the late 90s if i had to assume? maybe 10. 20 years from now. people will be nostalgic for chima and other lines of the era and lego might bring them back as a result. just wishful thinking to be perfectly honest.
1:27 This made me think of an idea for a lego series about 2 children discovering a magical world and exploring it. With each set being a different magical creature or place they came across with all kinds of mythical characters to meet and interact with. There could even be a plot about stopping some kind of magical villain who wants to take over the Human World or something and the kids need to find some magical McGuffins to stop them. Feels like it could be a really fun lego theme. Like Monster Fighters but with a more fantastical tone.
A surprise, but a very welcomed one
you love transformers, lego and speculative biology, awesome
17:49 that has to be one of the coolest sentences I’ve ever heard
Yes! Classic Space Episode WOHOOO
I'm pretty sure that the Takanuva GWP was intended to have the same value as the one we got, same deal with the mini Mata. The parts are just distributed differently. I definitely think I would've preferred Takanuva to what we got, but think they made the best decision overall. If Bionicle or something like it comes back, that Takanuva is how I would want it to look. Brick built details, but classic balljoints and gears.
Looking forward to this
Is anyone else having a miniature existential crisis realizing that LEGO has access to more properties than Disney does at this point?
Nick/Eljay off-handedly mentions they watches GaoGaiGar:
**Yuusha-Ou Tanjou immediately begins playing in my head.**
I didn't pay much attention to LEGO the past few years. A lot has happened in that short time!
I’m happy we got two bionicle sets
Even though I just got back into LEGO last April with my purchase of the Daily Bugle after leaving in 2017, 2022 was definitely an interesting year to come back to Lego as an adult. I don’t doubt there being a $1000 Lego set at some point in the future with how many absolutely massive budget smashing sets they made last year & all the ones rumored for this year. My favorite set of the year was definitely the Galaxy Explorer though! The building techniques impressed me SO much! Can’t wait for that 50th episode about Classic Space in a while as I was only born in 2000 & grew up with Galaxy Squad & Space Police 3 instead. I also got the space baby figure to go along with that & the Blacktron Bounty Hunter & Blacktron Evil Mech CMF figures to go with my Blacktron Cruiser. I also got a lot of Ninjago sets this year going from 2 to 20 because while I watched every season of the show as it came out, I only had like 2 of the sets. Plus I now have 24 unique versions of my favorite ninja Zane. I’m excited to see where they go with this new series this summer! Avatar was unexpected & while I didn’t like the 1st wave, I did get the ilu discovery & Mako Submarine from the 2nd wave & they go really nice next to my other underwater sets. I also got all 4 of Mei’s vehicles from Monkey Kid because that was my favorite character & I love the green & white color scheme those sets use. I will say I was very impressed by that theme’s unique part usages. Besides those I picked up a few figures & sets from my childhood I could never get like an Anubis Guard from Pharaoh’s Quest, Frank Rock from Monster Fighters, Electrolyzer from Ultra Agents, Guardian of the Deep from Atlantis, & Killer Croc’s Swamp Raider from the original Batman line. I had to part that one out though. I also made my own custom Calvin & Hobbes Lego set which I’m extremely proud of. It was definitely an expensive 1st year back as I wanted to get a lot of retired stuff from my childhood. But I’m excited for what new stuff comes out later this year like the return of Indiana Jones & that Up house as well as the new summer releases. Also, respect if anyone actually reads this whole thing since I essentially wrote a whole book.
I read it.
@@NickonPlanetRipple Thanks
I was able to find the Tahu set on it's own in an online store and got it for christmas
and now it stands proudly on display
but seeing how BIONICLE is used these days, as little easter eggs or celebration sets, comming across as an ancient legend
feels kinda fitting doesn't it?
