I think that "mystery piece" is the bracket the headlight assembly slides into on the bottom. So it is slotted in on the bottom, two screws on the top and one one the side which is close to the middle of the car. It is a complicated assembly but it is so easy to correct foggy lenses.
Thank you for posting this. BMW, as well as most other brands, charge around $2k per side for replacement bixenon headlights. Not an exaggeration. Most aftermarket units are between $200 to $400 per side. I prefer to use the aftermarket guts to preserve my glass lenses because the aftermarket units almost always use cheap plastic covers that fade and fog almost immediately.
These headlights are honestly a fantastic design, ZKW chrome failure notwithstanding. The ability to swap parts around like the front plastic lens and the lack of any butyl rubber sealant is great. I challenge anyone to find a modern bixeon car that's easier to get the headlights out and apart.
@@100PercentJake the BMW e32 7 series and e34 5 series are among the rare cars supporting both conventional 5 3/4 round lights and modern lighting technology. People often interchange conventional halogens or sealed beams while saving up for a set of aftermarket xenons. Best of all, the glass lenses can be interchanged between halogen and xenon, making these very easy and versatile cars to upgrade. These cars are thirty years old, but still feature modern styling.
The BMW e32 pioneered bixenons on luxury cars. The beautiful thing about the E32 is that conventional headlights can be substituted if you need to save up for replacement bixenons or to upgrade.
I'm surprised there aren't more BMW turn signal jokes in the comments. Almost as surprised as I am that BMW even bothers selling replacement parts to fix the turn signals.
Hacking the factory wiring and housing of a bi-Xenon projector headlight with a cheap chinese "hid-kit" hid bulb instead of just buying the correct bulb.......... I hope karma is real!
I’ve never seen a more complicated headlight assembly, however, it’s great that the front lens is easily replaced!
This headlight assembly is actually really straight forward. Try a Audi A8 D3 with LED DRL and AFS Bixenon!

Another great video about why it is good to avoid BMW.
It is amazing that you could put it back together with fewer parts than the BMW factory and with a little help from a previous owner.
German efficiency!

Great work Jake!
It's a BMW so you could just leave the turn signals on the workbench.
