Purchased a 2019 i3s Rex in October 2024, with only 12,000 miles.. what a cool car, rather drive it around town than anything else. Great video! Thanks!
For a while I was seriously considering buying an i3, with REX, bought a Toyota iQ 1.4 D4D manual instead, I'm very happy with the decision, especially after seeing you replace the condenser, it was an hour job on the iQ, please keep the i3 videos coming I love them
Interestingly, BMWs official repair procedure which was originally "replace everything" has been amended to being more or less what I accomplished in this video, but they flush it with a machine that uses adapters to hook into the A/C lines at various points. I believe it accomplishes a better clean by completely filling the system with a flush liquid and then violently sloshing it back and forth to dislodge objects from the microchannels. I tried to sort of simulate this by at one point putting my finger over the outlet so I could totally fill the battery section of the system with the denatured alcohol and then pulsing adding more and letting it out the end to make sure the liquid had permeated into each channel. Unsure what it helped. I sure wish I could see sub-pack level diag on these cars to see if any packs run hotter than others.
I was screaming expansion valve early on. They aren’t really cleanable once the Black Death hits. Now we know why the car wizard always quotes an entire system when that happens 😂
It's funny how difficult it is to diagnose modern A/C systems because all of the traditional knowledge concerns orfice tube systems with static-displacement compressors. Almost none of that knowledge is applicable to a variable-displacement expansion valve system. I had to do a LOT of learning on A/C system theory to be able to figure this out.
@@Desertfox92308 The funny thing was the things that broke were rarely the EV parts. Things that should be been fine like the screens, the seats, and the glove box doors were several of the things that should have been fine but were not.

I kinda kills me that there's nothing like this car that you can get anymore. I mean there might be a couple of things with a similar shape, but that's about all they might have in common.
I'm hoping it can hold on long enough for me to eventually buy a Rivian R3. No range extender, but a truly modern EV with DC Fast Charging is still probably more convenient than an i3's 2 gallon REX that you have to fill up every 60 miles, lol.
Now you know why the Car Ninja either removes the entire front clip, or drops the engine & suspension any time he does anything beyond an oil change on a BMW.
@100PercentJake buy a cheap canbus adapter. Capture the message the infotainment sends out when it starts preheating. Replay it whenever you want to preheat. Can be done with a rpi/esp32 pretty easily.
@100PercentJake but FYI you probably can't capture or replay the Message at the ODB2 connector because of the gateway. You probably have to splice in at the specific can the infotainment is on.
4:13 That's when you need to get some cover don't get out there for a good video because if the firefight breaks out you don't want to catch a stray. Then get the video haha
I'm sorry (don't know why I'm apologizing) I really like these things - this spec in particular. I don't know if I have it in me to address all the things in this one in particular but feel that BMW was a little too early with this product.
Damn, wish you'd put this video out a few weeks ago I could have hooked you up with a car. My 94AH 2017 with low miles was totaled in a minor front end accident. Drive train and AC was completely fine. Oh well. Replaced it with a Bolt, which isn't near as fun. Saw you in the i3 Discord, do the sport mode flash if you haven't. Lots of fun.
Dang! I'm leery of the sport mode flash with how trashed my battery is. It's advised to have a good condition 60Ah or a 94/120Ah battery to handle the current demands.
I owned one of these new and it is so cool, but the BMW hobbling coupled with BMW quality make it maddening. I will never buy another BMW ever. You can reprogram it to use the full fuel tank and some other cool stuff.

And that’s why you but a Tesla especially now that it’s possible to find a used Model 3 around or under $20k (plus as of now you can get $4000 point of sell refund - so about $16k Tesla). No need to maintain an engine, super easy to maintain, they have 4g so many years to go, battery is large enough so works great in the winter and the APP is amazing (and works both over 4G and wifi) plus free ongoing software upgrades that come in every month or two… plus FSD is AMAZING! (especially now with hands free on latest releases). And now that there are plenty of 10 year old Teslas with 400k miles, original battery and motors, and Model 3 has newer tech which should do easily 500k miles… it’s a great deal for an amazing car…
@ people are fine buying cars from ford and VW - both were more than happy to help the Nazis, not to mention Hitler said multiple times that he got a lot of his ideas from Henry Fords writings. Also, Tesla is a public company and has hundreds of thousands of employees. Id much rather buy a great car from a company whose CEO is outspoken (even if I don’t agree with a lot he’s saying) than from a lying CEO like Mary Barra.
I have a 2015 REX daily driver and a wrecked 2017 REX (not planning to sell yet). I would say "German/English translation" instead of "pretentious". The Range Extender is not going to charge the battery if you are traveling above ~60 MPH. I wouldn't drive/charge the car if the AC was not working to keep the battery cool but I understand the car is worn out. Did you use the special BMW compressor oil? I would have enjoyed seeing how you unplugged/plugged in the 12V and HV connectors into the compressor. You're lucky if the aluminum motor mount was already installed - it's a PITA. On the door handle, I found the Wisely Automotive video extremely helpful to make the handle perfect. You can check the battery degradation in the hidden service menu under "Batt. Kapa. Max". Subscribing...
In the previous episode with this car we drove back from Boston in one day using a fuel cell in the frunk feeding the REX and were able to maintain 65-75mph without draining the battery. Strong winds or long uphills would result in losing a few percent SOC from the REX setpoint but easing off the throttle or going downhill would get it back quick enough. The Kapa Max is a guesstimate the car does, not terribly accurate. I did an actual ISTA-initiated battery health check and the result didn't even give a number, just "replace all battery modules". I've talked to a few techs and they've never seen one bad enough to cause that message, but if kapa max was to be believed my battery has good to moderate degredation.
@@100PercentJake Interesting. I'll check out the previous episode. My REX has trouble maintaining my battery level when I am going 60-65 MPH. Maybe I have the Air Con on too high. I also see a "Charging at reduced power" message when AC charging (not sure about DC charging) so maybe my car has other issues. I'll have to do some experimenting. My Kapa Max is 13.7 kWh (of 18.8 kWh?). I see a "Battery aging: SOH low" OBD "Info" code in the BimmerLink app. I'll have to try out the battery health check in ISTA. Thanks!
Next on 100% Jake...
So I bought a used Wichita police cruiser. It's worse than I thought.

Microchannel condensers are next to impossible to fully flush clean. It has to be replaced after a compressor failure.
Interestingly, BMWs official repair procedure which was originally "replace everything" has been amended to being more or less what I accomplished in this video, but they flush it with a machine that uses adapters to hook into the A/C lines at various points.
