Hello & Welcome!
I just purchased a new rifle - the Remington 783 (w/scope) and I’m anxious to try it out. That sale was perfectly timed, just before gun season and I can’t wait to get up north.
Join me today and I’ll share my thoughts on this beauty with you. We’ll also head to the range where I’ll show my process for siting it in.
Feel free to add any useful tips/info about the Remington 783 in the comments.
Until next time, take care & God bless.
The Handy Outdoorsman
I got the same gun..I threw that scope in a creek..got me a Nikon and that thing shoots awesome for a cheap gun!!!
Awesome. After having it a few years it is my go to rifle. Did the same with my scope.
Got mine mounted a 4-12-40 Nikon scope and I’m shooting sub moa very impressed and love it
Don’t say you have weapons. Cause the department of justice will come and pick up every gun N rifle u own. Remember A gun and Rifle is not a weapon until you use it as a weapon. A weapon is any object that you use to cause harm to a person place or thing.
Well said!!
I had the complete opposite results with between Core-Lokt & Winchester ammo. I slapped on a Leupold VX-2 3-9x40 scope on my Remington 783 in .270 and sighted it in at 25 yards. By the time I walked away from that range, I had my bullet holes touching with Remington ammo. 20 hours later, I put my first buck on that gun at 65 yards. Perfect shot placement.
I ran out of ammo so my buddy picked up some Winchester brand for me. I had 2 out of 2 misfires (and lost a buck and a doe on the same day). I can't tell you how many curses I invented that day. Went back to Remington in .270 and the first 5 shots out of the gun hit everything I aimed it at @ 100 yards (pop cans & bottles).
Took it out on another hunt and the first doe I had a shot at happened to be at 100 yards and I dropped her right there with perfect shot placement. My gun loves Core-Lokt.
I bought one in 30-06 in September for $280. When I first bought it I sighted it in at 💯 yards 2" high. I then shot steel targets at 220, 330, 440, and 600 yards. I shot a coyote at 5 yards in October and a whitetail buck at 262 yards in November. I absolutely love this rifle. The only 2 things I did was put a Nikon Prostaff scope with a 4" sunshade on it, and I adjusted the trigger down to 2.5lbs.
That is encouraging to hear, the furthest place I have to shoot out to is just under 200 yards. I have not decided on a replacement scope yet, Heard great things about the Nikon Prostaff, I have two Leopolds from other weapons that I might use.
Purchased a 783 in .300 Win mag. Advertised at factory bore sighted. Out of the box my gun shot 2 feet low at 40 yards?? Also, the factory scope has a very short eye relief of about 2 inches! Way to short and dangerous!! I avoided major eye damage due to familiary with heavey recoil weapon. Anyone with less or no prior experience will end up in the hospital with major damage, if not blindness!!! Am going to ask Remington to provide a proper scope with a 4" eye relief.
Trevor Gomez I have this rifle in 30-06 as well. In camo. I’m 17 haven’t had time to shoot it yet.
Did you replace the scope that came with your rifle? If so what did you go with?
Did the rifle come in the cameo pattern or did you paint it yourself? Thinking of camouflaging mine, just not sure.
I have two 783's with 16.5 " Heavy Threaded Barrels, in .308 & .223 they both shoot sub MOA groups out of the box, I upgraded the stock to the Boyds AT-ONE and they both are keepers.
Sorry for the delay response just now seeing your post. Of the 2 which one do you prefer?
Just got one on a black Friday sale at Dunham's in .308. I can't wait to get it out to the range. Thanks for the great video!
You will absolutely love it.
I’m a long time firearms owner but it was only recently that I decided to get a bolt action, something with some reach. So I picked up the 783, didn’t want to spend to much money incase I decided this part of the sport wasn’t for me. I’m here to tell you that thing shoots great for me. I dropped it a boyds stock and put a magpul bipod on it. Haven’t got to try it at more than 100yds but it’s a winner as far as I can tell.
Hey Shawn, can respect that!! Heard good things about the Boyd’s stocks, what caliber did you go with?
.308 mostly because the indoor range that I go to doesn’t allow anything bigger and that’s where I would go to try out the new stock and bipod before I made the drive to the outdoor range. Also that’s the one they had in stock when I bought it. Also I’ve been thinking about picking up an ar-10 or fal type rifle so the round compatibility is a big plus.
Thanks for the video 👍💥😁 I came across something yesterday called a deresonator made by limbsaver. It's a rubber ring that slips onto the barrel and deadens vibration. It shrinks your groups of positioned just at the right spot on the barrel. But you are going to have to shoot a few 3 shot groups to determine exactly where the groups shrink best and that's the place on the barrel where the rubber ring should stay
Will have to check this out, sounds interesting
I bought a .243 a year ago.Really like the gun. At first i thought i made a big mistake was not paying attention did not realize that compact ment youth model. But it comes with shims to adjust lop.Did not take much out of box to have less then 1 inch group.
I got a laugh out of your comment.! Not sure I would have put the two together either. Glad it worked out for you.
I have the same in .243 with the 20" barrel and really like it. The compact version just seemed to have better balance.
Both my Remington .223 & .308 783's 16.5" Heavy threaded barrel shoots 6 shot groups under a dime size at 100 yards .
Now that I have shot it a few more times, fined tuned the scope I too am shooting "dimes" at 100 yards. I think this is a great rifle. Have had no issues with it.
@@thehandyoutdoorsman9014 I like my 783's and they are my primary hunting rifles for Deer, Hog's , Coyotes. as well punching Iron targets out to 1000 yards.I have the ATN X-sight 4K pro 5-20X Day / Nightvision on the .308 .And a Primary Arms 4x14x44 dmr scope on the .223 . If I only could have one rifle I would pick the 783 because they are very accurate at a minimum price.
@@thehandyoutdoorsman9014 I was on paper with mine at 100 yards with the bore sighted scope and was hittin' 2-3" groups out the box. My buddy helped me reel that in to tighter 2" groups before I upgraded the scope a year later. Still would take a deer any day.
I’ve had two 783’s. They are good, solid rifles. Good luck with deer season!
Thanks Jonathan, I was able to fill one of my buck tags with it already. May I ask what caliber you chose, always curious what others shot.
What do you do with two of these? (hunt, target shooting) Do you prefer one over the other?
Curious if your still using that scope that came on the 783 ? Your lucky you got any kind of group with the included scope. Mine would not hold a zero at all and was a horrible piece of garbage. I suspect that when you went back to the range your POI had changed ? The 783 it's self is a great gun and value for the money even with the junk scope. I slapped a Nikon 3x9x40 with a 4" shade on mine and the rifle really shined and shoots as well or better then a $1000.00 gun. For me a gun is a tool and not a piece of fine art and the 783 does the job really well
Sorry for the delay response just now seeing your post. Yes I indeed changed out the scope to a Bushmaster. Glad I did as every time I I take this to the range it is 100% on target
Amen..that scope is mega trash!!!I threw mine in a creek and put a Nikon on it..guns been shooting sub Moa ever since!!!
On the bucket list is to go deer hunting. I have a Remington 700 243 I need to get sighted in and find a buddy to show me how to field dress.
The 700 is a great deer rifle, a big step up from the 783. Check your local sportsman club, they may have a class or two during the deer season on how to field dress an animal. There also some good videos out on RUclips.
Remington 700s are LEGENDARY rifles. As far as field dressing use THE GUTLESS METHOD. Check our Randy Newberg
Gutless Method video on you tube.
Good guns all around lol and as for field dressing deer id be happy to show you but I'm from Southeastern Indiana so not sure if I'd be able to do so but good luck and straight shots
You should not be touching the barrel with the left hand. Your are interfering with the harmonics of the barrel. I have one of these in.243 and it will drive tacks.
I have always shot this way when shooting off of sand bags, have not seen much difference when I go to shoot freehand with the grouping. I have a much tighter grouping now that I have gotten use to the rifle and scope. Thanks for commenting !
Ermine - I that is done consistently there will be no change in the harmonics. If he puts on a glove or pulls down real hard, things will change. However, it is better to 'pull down' on the fore end rather than on the barrel.
got this rifle in 308 for my Daughter for XMas when she was 12 and slapped a Leupold VX2 4X12X40mm on top she loves it took 2 deer at 13 and got a nice 8 point this year she is now 15 ....so as her first nice buck i had a European mount done for her ...she wants some hogs now :-)
That is awesome!! Everyone loves bacon.
A 12 year old girl sucking up the recoil of a .308 ? That could be considered a form of child abuse. LOL She must have a sturdy frame.
Same Leupold I mounted on my 783 in .270 which is an amazing scope in low shooting light.
It’s a rifle
I stand corrected. My content is not scripted so I do make mistakes as everything is off the cuff. I understand “This is my rifle this is my gun”
Right on brother
What is a pistol or is it a handgun ? Is it a magazine or is it a clip ? I think everyone will agree that it is a firearm ?
To me personally, it's not a weapon or a rifle: I refer to it as "a tool" because a hunter uses it for deer as a carpenter uses a hammer. With that being said, he said "thynsetic stock"😂😂 I do the same thing💀
I get corrected on that every time. Bad habits are hard to break .
Not trying to be a smart*** but wouldn't holding down on the barrel of the rifle defeat the purpose of a free-floated barrel, just asking looking for pointers on accuracy.
Derek, that is a valid question. I am not pressing down hard or modifying the projector of the bullet in any way. I should have adjusted my position on the sand bags to hold it underneath., was my first time firing the rifle and was trying to get use to it.
Good review Handy. I don't think you ever said what caliber you were using but I think the ammo box said 308?
You are correct, 308
You did say 308 right at the beginning when I had volume down. Sorry
Thanks for the video. It was helpful and entertaining. Just put a deposit on one.
That's great, I really like it. What caliber are you getting?
@@thehandyoutdoorsman9014 .308
that was way better gun powder rez
Nice review. What county is your range in? Good luck with your hunt.
Thanks Mike. The range is the Pontiac Lake Recreation Shooting range, located in Oakland County.
I thought so, looks nice. I belong to a gun club in Macomb County.
CONGRATULATIONS FOR THE VIDEO WHAT IS THE MAXIMUM REACH OF FIRE? I DID LIVE IN BRAZIL AND I WANTED TO IMPORT A REMINGTON 783. WOULD YOU INDICATE ME A SHOP MAKING EXPORT?
Hello Chiquitinho, my maximum reach has been 100 yards (91 meters). Where I practice that is the maximum distance I can shot. I do not know of a shop that would export a rifle to a foreign country.
@@thehandyoutdoorsman9014 Thank you very much, friend
Is this Pontiac lake ?
Yes it is. Great improvements from when I started there over 30 years ago.
registration ? Who did the Registration go too.
I said registration, meant to say the paper work to purchase the rifle.
@@thehandyoutdoorsman9014 Thanks You scared me there for a moment lol I hope they never try a gun registration in the US. Canada tried it and after millions of dollars gave up
I dont like this grouping.
I would agree. This was the first few rounds through the rifle. Shot group is much tighter now. Care to share your shot group?
It's a hunting rifle not a weapon a weapon is what you use for self defense
Brian Cook any fire arm can be used as a weapon just depends on what he’s using it for ( not trying to start an argument or be a butt) just saying
@@fishtaxi4005 no i get what you r saying but with the stigma guns r getting these days in my opinion its better to say hunting rifle if that's what you are using it for but if u r using it for self defense or any other means besides hunting On Target shooting call the weapon that's just my opinion
I would agree. I don't post much about firearms but I am finding out there is a small allowance for mistakes in referencing to correct terms. Thanks for commenting!
Buy a Howa- these low budget rifles Savage Aixis and Remington 783 unreliable
Dave, I have had mine for several months and shot over a hundred rounds through it, no issues. Is there any particular issue that you can highlight on I should watch out for? Thanks for commenting.
My 783 is more than reliable and I can shoot out past 600 yards with amazing accuracy.
Wrong!
