In this video we review the Remington 783 in all its facets. Is the 783 the budget hunting rifle you should buy or is it a hard pass?
I did the work for you on this one, doing a full accuracy test testing out various match ammunition's to see just how good (or bad this cheap little rifle could do) and yes it was an expensive review to produce ammo isn't getting any cheaper!
while the Remington 700 has been criticized through and through its younger brother the 783 is surprisingly impressive, keep in mind at this price your expectations should be reasonably low, this is no high end rifle. this rifle sport a adjustable trigger that truly amazed me, there was very very little creep to the Crossfire trigger and the breaking weight was very consistent more so than on some 1000$+ rifles (we wont name names....)
that and the bolt is quite smooth as well!
now for accuracy, we tested various different match ammunition on the Remington 783 in its original plastic pillar bedded stock, and we also upgraded the stock to a Boyds Heritage pillar bedded stock, now if the barreled action was capable of more than 1"-1.25" the we would have seen that with the boyds stock, then again 1"-1.5" is still perfectly fine for deer hunting, so ultimately it doesn't really need to be any better than that.
in this video we used the
-Boyd's Heritage Stock (color Royal Jacaranda)

IT'S NOT DRESSED TO IMPRESS, IT'S DRESSED FOR WORK.
Custom-grade accuracy is now within reach of virtually every hunter. Building upon expertise that's dominated bolt-action technology for more than 50 years, our engineering team started from a clean drawing board and combined their most advanced, accuracy-enhancing features to create an all-new platform.
The black synthetic stock is built around a dual pillar bedded platform that free floats the barrel, and contains a high nylon fiber content, which promotes superior strength and rigidity for shot to shot consistency. Also helping deliver those inherently tight groups is a precision button-rifled barrel. For shot control, it's equipped with the crisp new CrossFire™ trigger system that's user adjustable to suit your preferences.
The 783 features a steel detachable magazine with a steel latch. Standard calibers have a four round capacity and magnum calibers hold three rounds. Like with all Remington bolt actions, expect a lifetime of rock-solid reliability. From the next generation in a legendary bloodline.

My 2 cents. I had a 783 a few years ago in 7mm rem mag. It was an amazing rifle. It was quite light weight for the caliber but it was super accurate. I put about 260 rounds through it and it would get 1 moa groupings even out to 500 yards. I bought it to shoot 800yards+ but the opportunity came up too rarely, combined with the high ammo price so regrettably sold it. I had zero quality problems with the rifle, even considering the abuse of the larger caliber

Weird review. Sounded like a plug for Boyd's. But the confusion part is which generation of 783 do you have in your hands? New production (2022) or old production/pre bankrupt? The 783s from a couple years ago were some of the worst feeling rifles of all time. They also had this annoying oversight where the two sides of the stock were molded together, there would be left a long line of plastic that was sharp. It was especially annoying on your face when you shouldered the rifle. Couldn't even be bothered to clean the up the extra plastic from molding. And if you bought one from 2018 or 2019, and had an issue (most likely) it was no longer covered for warranty because the company didn't really exist anymore.

I bought a 783 chambered in 308 because I needed a rifle in a hurry and it was priced right. In my opinion the 308 doesnt have unmanageable or uncomfortable recoil. Certainly not substantially more than a 6.5 would. Also have to keep this rifle in perspective when reviewing it. It was intended as a low budget entry level rifle. All of these people complaining about the finish, cheap scope and stock are missing the intended point of the rifle. I actually think remington done pretty well balancing the rifle with the price point. The rifle can be easily upgraded so no need to complain about cut corners to keep price low. Nice...accurate...low budget rifle.

I have 2 of those rifles I have 1 in 223 Medium contour barrel and 1 in 243. My 223 is black synthetic stock . I am out to 800 y with that rifle. My 243 is The laminate stock 26" heavy barrel. I'm Out to 1100 yd. So yes they are very accurate I also have a Remington 700 in 308 With a 26" heavy barrel. All 3 are very accurate. Do not shoot Tula ammo.

The problem I'm constantly fixing on customers 783's is that the bolt retainer wears down and eventually the bolt just comes right out the back every time you rack it. Pretty common, I do several repairs a year. Accuracy is okay, trigger is okay. I place it below the Axis, American, Howa, and most others in it's class just because of the frequency of failure I've seen.

783 has what is described as a no.2 counter barrel. Pillar beaded for free floating of the barrel.Bought mine for $315 dlevered to my local gun shop. Shoots great with Hornady 168 grn. ammo. No of another one in .270 that shoots MOA time after time. Pencil thin barrel? Don’t think so. These budget rifles kept folks working in a tough time! I stand by these budget rifles!

Man, i absolutely LOVE your channel! So glad i found it. I love the roughly 20 minute videos, how thorough you are, the specs listed in the description, if you had accessories listed for each firearm that would be too cool man. Keep it up!

I am very happy with mine in 308. I put on a Boyd's laminate stock and a Nikon Buckmasters 2 scope. Range and hunting never disappointed

I have 783 in 243 with wood stock it’s really on top of the lower budget guns. Trigger is extremely nice. I think its accurate enough to shoot varmints up to 350y.

  • @clintonlayne9253

I bought my Remington 783 in 308 at Walmart during a clearance sale. It groups nicely. I bought a Mossberg Patriot in 308 which also groups nicely. I have shoot offs at the range to see which one I use for Deer hunting. 2022 it was the 783 but no shots. Fired .😊

Thanks! I've been curious about the current Remingtons produced under new ownership. I'd love to see a review of one of the 783 heavy barreled options in either 6.5 creed or 308. Btw, your reviews are great, thorough verbally and visually, yet also concise and to the point.
