    in this video we take a look at the Remington 700 SPS chambered in .308 Winchester, this is my opinion on this rifle designed and catered towards the varminting and long range community.
    the real question i think should be does the Remington still hold its place after being basically unchanged after so many years, does it still compete with it competition? does it hold its own?
    well in this video you will find out. after redoing the load development we took her out to 980 yards, no small feat for a Remington 700 or even for the .308.
    the Remington was upgraded with the following:
    -CADEX DX2 EVO trigger (this is a single stage/ dual stage trigger) best of both worlds
    cadexdefence.com/store/dx2-do...
    and the Boyds thumbhole Varmint stock (wood just gives it this timeless beauty; and lots of configurations and colors to choose from)

    the muzzle break we were using is the CoreBrake V3 by Coretac Solutions

    the optic we were using is the
    Tract Toric UHD 4.5-30x56 a premium optic for those who want the best money can buy with no compromise.

    or there's the more affordable 5-20x50 still great glass lots of internatl adjustment and a zero stop

    I'm rocking a Rem 700 ADL Varmint 26" barrel in .308 Win. Paid $475 for it from Cabela's, then I upgraded the stock to an adjustable Bell & Carlson A5, installed a Magpul detachable mag system, replaced the awful 10 lb default trigger with a Timney, then topped it a cheap Sightmark Citadel 5-30x50mm. Remmy 700s are like the Honda Civics of bolt-guns. Easy to mod, and a plethora of aftermarket/performance accessories.

    As a Canadian living in the US, I assemble and build my own rifle. Out of all actions, I find Remington by far the easiest and simplest to build up to "professional" standard. Of course, there are so many modern actions in the market now, including eternal original Mauser action, but Remington 700 action can be fitted in most up-to-date stocks and bases that you will get the similar result with minimum workload and cost - also, it is very very reliable (My latest is Rem 700 Short in 308 + 40X trigger + Badger Ord. steels + Magpul stock...a consistent 1000 yarder).

    I love my first Remington 700 SPS 308 26” heavy barrel. Gunsmith threaded for me and installed SureFire muzzle brake. First, I upgraded the stock to Bell & Carlson M40 style, torqued to 60 in-lb. Second, I replaced the trigger with Timney Elite Hunter, adjusted to 2 lbs pull. Favorite Ammo is Federal Premium MatchKing 168 grain. Definitely sub-MOA.
    Out of the box, the bolt was not very smooth, but after a couple of years with 1000+ rounds, it is getting very smooth now. Finally I changed to “Modern” Oryx chassis, and equipped with USO TS25 5-25x50 scope. It’s fun to shoot.
    Recently I bought another SPS 6.5 CM, 24” at around $560. Clearly the stock is a throwaway, much downgrade from my previous SPS 308. I didn’t even try to shoot but swapped the Bell & Carlson stock. Last weekend, I took it to range using Aguila 140 Grain to break-in. First 5 shots made 2” group with one flyer. Then the barrel got hot quick, the rest of two groups looked like shotgun. So I let it cool down and cleaned the barrel and bolt face. Then I shot 5 Winchester 125, achieved 1.5” group. That’s it!
    I just ordered a TriggerTech Primary Independent single stage 1.5 to 4.0lbs pull. Look forward to seeing if it works better.

    It's crazy the prices now. I bought a Rem 700 Varmint chambered in 6.5 Creedmoor just last year - brand new in box - for $399 USD. Upgraded to Triggertech trigger, put the barreled action on a Grayboe Ridgeback because, let's face it; the factory stock is basically like shooting off a piece of soggy lasagna. I also mounted a Bushnell Elite Tactical DMR II, and shot it PRS this year. It's a 1:8 twist and shoots 130's at 2810 and sub MOA. It's been a great rifle.

      Hi Evan, thanksnfor the sujestion. While i will have owned all the tikka models that are for long range, thats one that i will likely not buy. For the reason the the barelled action in the CTR is the same as the barelled action in the tikka UPR (we have a review completed on it) the only difference is the stock. So if you are looking for a review on it id recommend checking out our tikka upr review. Additionally its the same barelled action that they have in the tikka Tac A1, and i have one of those on the way (still in the mail somewhere) thanks for watching!

    Hey I have a question about this rifle. I have a bergara wilderness 700 foot print action and I’m buying a bell and Carleson long range hunter stock for it. The stork is a direct replacement for the sps 700 heavy barrel could you maybe tell me the diameter of the sps barrel at the muzzle and at the end of the forend I’m curious how the size of the sps barrel compares to my bergara and if it will match up close or if there will be a huge ugly gap along side my barrel in the new stock. I’d appreciate any help because I can’t find theses measurements anywhere!

    I just installed a HARRELS tuner/brake on my Rem 700 223 and @ 100 yds. my best 5 shot groups have reduced from 5/8" to 3/8" for only $150.00 CDN. 40% reduction.
    So now my factory barrel performs like a precision barrel (Bartlein) which would have cost me some $1500.00 CDN.

The barrel length is 24" and pushing 185 Berger juggernauts @2750fps easy. I am using vihtavuori N550 and lapua palma brass with Federal 205M primers. My SD about 4 fps. My coal is limited to 2.840 because the bergara feed ramps are long. Thanks again for a great video.

      @@EpikArms Thank you. No pressure signs at all. I loaded already .4 gr over my current charge weight during ladder test with zero pressure signs but I chose the charge weight where I had the best sd node. The reason i did not mention the charge weight is because the vihtaviori load data is useless. I started at min charge and worked my way up. In that manual just compare the data for the sierra match king 190 gr and the berger 185gr juggernaut bullets with n550. You will see the problem. I shoot both. 185 bergers are great but expensive and hard to find. I leave in Europe and bought them from the Us. Not cheap....

    I'm thinking of getting one of these since I already have a left handed 700 CDL 30-06 as my hunting rifle. I'm thinking 308 because you just can't shoot that far in the mountains of northern Virginia anyway and M80 is much cheaper to shoot. I've heard a lot of good things about the Bergara but they don't make any LH rifles so will have to go with an SPS, except I don't like the bad things I'm seeing about the poor QC on new production 700s. Can I reasonably expect a 700 SPS built today to be reliable or am I dreaming? Thanks. PS.....nice vid and great shooting

    My intention is to put together a benchrest type rifle. Shopped Savage, Tikka, and a few others, but the best triggers are made for Remington actions or clones. I know there are better than the Ren700, but $3000 is kind of the base price for a custom rifle, which is hard to swallow. Maybe after I shoot out the SPS barrel, I'll have the money to think about a $1000 action.

    I've got an older Remington 700 BDL that was made in 73 and that gun will poke out a single jagged hole 3 shot group every time I do my part right using 150 gr. Pro Hunter bullets, 57 gr. Winchester 760 powder, Winchester large rifle primers, and a cartridge overall length of 3.283. My Howa model 1500 will do the same darn thing with the same ingredients, but the cartridge overall length is 3.238. I have realized that the newer guns have tighter chambers. They are just regular hunting rifles with # 2 contour barrels 22 in. long. I always let them barrels cool off for 10 minutes between shots because it let's the barrels retract from the heat. Still have all of those targets in picture frames in the hallway. The smallest group was done by a regular Howa model 1500 243 that doesn't need a reloading due to accuracy. That damn gun doesn't care if it's a Remington or winchester 100 grain softpoint it has shot either one through a hole the size of a cigarette butt looking hole.
    I've never had a gun that can do that without having to fine tune a load.
    Guns like this are one in a million.

    You made a big improvement in accuracy by replacing the factory tupperware stock. How did you bed the action in the Boyds? Fiberglass? Pillar bedding? No bedding--just screw the action onto the stock? The bedding is the most important detail for improving accuracy & you said nothing about that in this video. Boyds offers to install pillars as an "upgrade". I am asking because I am genuinely curious how you achieved your accuracy results. I suspect you may have used fiberglass bedding. I would be very impressed if no bedding at all was needed.

    Remington 700 footprint is just a standard for parts compatibility.. they are nowhere near a custom action and often require quite a bit of work to get to shoot. Tikka is the best factory rifle out there hands down. I considered a R700 as a fun project gun, but it ends up costing the same as just going full custom with something like a Big Horn Origin.

    • @EpikArms
      @EpikArms  2 года назад

      personally Id go with the remington 700 over the American, my American predator's action is horribly clunky , not even close to being smooth and the trigger has so much creep to it, and shoots 1.5" groups, although the stock is preferable, the action is not.

    • @striderkage
      @striderkage 2 года назад

      Not sure why a Remington 700 in .308 would be so expensive in Canada. They usually go for $500 in the States. With the difference in price, you can throw on a 20 MOA rail, cheap $200 scope, a decent trigger, and some factory ammo, then off you go. What the 700s lack in sniper quality performance, it makes up for in customization and value.
