WHAT IS THE SHELF LIFE OF YOUR MAKEUP?
As soon as you open makeup its life and effectiveness decreases and bacteria begins to grow! Scary eh!
Cosmetics aren't required by law to have expiration dates, so you can't just look at the label to know when a product has expired. Experts vary in their guidelines, but all agree that mascara lasts the shortest amount of time and is the likeliest to cause infections, such as pink eye. Expiration dates are simply "rules of thumb" and a product's safety may expire long before the expiration date if a product hasn't been stored properly
Any cosmetic that changes texture, or smell, should be discarded immediately.
Makeup preservatives should kill common-use bacteria. But, as FDA studies show, a little bacteria is present in makeup before we buy it. As soon as you open your new product, airborne bacteria rushes in. Then you usually add bacteria by touching the product with unclean hands or with an unclean applicator or brush. At some point, aging cosmetics lose their effectiveness to fight bacteria no matter how careful you are when using it. But there are steps we can take to extend the shelf life of our cosmetics and protect ourselves from infections, like pink eye and skin breakouts.
In truth when cared for cosmetics last a VERY long time and with care and attention they can far out live the expiration on the box. Get into the habit of washing your make brushes every week. Use a product like beauty so clean to disinfect your makeup. I cannot stress the importance of this step alone.
Powder Lasts, in pressed form, up to 18 months with the loose variety lasting up to one year. Makeup sponges don't need to be thrown out but they do need to be washed every week. Use soapy water and allow them to dry naturally before you place them back in the compact to avoid encouraging bacteria. But once a sponge has lost it's original shape, smells off or is shredding at the edges, replace!
Blusher Has a shelf life of one year. Over time, they get cakey and dried out, making them difficult to apply, so toss them! Cream blushers will last longer, as the pigment and oils preserve them.
Concealer Has a shelf life of one year. Avoid using the concealer directly on the spot, as this can leave bacteria on the product and, when used elsewhere on the face, lead to further outbreaks. Instead use a short, pointed brush to dot the concealer over the spot, then clean the brush using Mac's brush cleanser.
Eye shadow Has a shelf life of one to two years for both powder and cream formulations.

I'm relieved because I'm not tossing a $40 highlight palette after 2-3 months
I've had mine for a year. Can't afford to buy new stuff.
monica solis i had mine for like 3 years i think😂
I’ve had some nars powder blushes for 15+ years and don’t know what to do. lol
I've had a Mac highlighter for a year, I could still sell it as new that's how much there's left. I don't wear daily makeup up but I still use it and it should at least have a dent... it's not going anywhere haha. There's no PAO jar anyway.
Oh - what the hell! I'm still using high-end eye shadows that are over 30 years old, with no problems whatsoever.
Holy crap!!! Now I feel a ton better about the huge amounts of shadow I have. My collection is MASSIVE...so glad it may still be good in a few years...
Too bad my foundation I use after 5year old my skin turn bad pimples
Me too! Never have had an infection and my eye shadows has lasted years. However, I practice what my mom once told me, "never to share my makeup no matter what". I tell the same thing to my daughters. I think also has to do with your level of cleaning. I see people that have those make ups open and a mess!
@@blackginger2224 foundation and other cream/liquid products will always go bad faster. There's no other way around it. Whereas you could make eyeshadows, powders and lipsticks last longer by spraying alcohol or makeup sanitizers(and cleaning the top layers once in a while).
edarlingb That cannot be good for your skin though
This is something makeup companies doesn't want you to know, because they want you to keep on buying and buying.
Thank you Wayne for keeping us informed!
I love your videos because you do not go around repeating what everybody else says. I was looking for a videos about the expiration of makeup products. Everybody repeats what the label says. You just deliver the logical information, nobody remembers that the brands needs to sell products, so if you keep it for as long as 4 years that is not business for them. I'm not telling you should used expired products, but you don't have to throw away makeup that is completely fine, just because the lab need to support their costs. Just saying!!
GOOD point!!!
Yes but no… i throw everything away that’s expired
In case someone gets a reaction I don’t want to be sued because what happens if the client comes back and they realize the palette or whatever is expired? Idk is just me .
Yes!!!
I have eye shadows, powders and blushes, mainly from Dior and Guerlain, that belong to my mother back in the 80`s. They work not only amazingly well, but in terms of pigmentation and staying power, they are WAY BETTER than the most of today products...
j ule Oh wow, how classy your mother is by those products. How gorgeous were the women in the 1980's on tv like Dallas .... from Ireland, have a great day ! 🍀
Im keeping my expired chanel lipstick too because it's fucking pigmented and still works great af
I have my mother's eyeshadows too from the 80s..... They are wayyyyy better
I always think is all about marketing because these stuff have a lot of chemicals but with foundation and mascara I’m always careful
All your videos are "No bullshit just pure gold" 👌🏻
Unless it smells funny or starts to look funny I ain’t flinging it! 😂
I watched a girl take the tester mascara at a store and put it right on her eye. and I just watched it stunned like a car crash
saw that once too. i felt so disgusted... personally i would not even put tester blushes on my face because tons of people touched them
+dc r89 I still don't get how they can do that!! my skin would at least break out and if it is about my eyes I will have an eye infection for some weeks like wayne mentioned!!!
thanks to him I'm using isopropyl alcohol now to disinfect my make up 😚😚
and lipstick!' 😷
+yaya penguins lipstick. really? I cringed when l read yours and the mascara comments!! yuck!!!
dc r89 i simply can't make my peace with people sharing lipsticks and lip balms.
I have Dior eyeshadows for way longer than 2 years(over 4 already) and everything is ok tbh. I'm glad I watched your video though.
my mother told me never to share makeup. she Said you never know what someone might have
Great video. Throwing your makeup away indiscriminately when the expiration date comes is foolish, imho. Common sense, as you said, is the best way to go. I have had powder products that have lasted for years, and I still use them with no problems. Cream (and generally wet) products don't last as long because the moisture helps the bacteria multiply faster. And, of course, anything that goes in the eyes, like mascara or liner, should be tossed after a few months no matter what. I guess a makeup artist should be more thorough with these things, as he/she has to keep professional standards of hygiene.
Lol I never toss make up, just mascara because they dry out eventually anyway, eyeliners as well tend to dry out and need to be replaced.
I toss lipstix and mascara the most
I'll keep my mac lipsticks til i finish them, soz
Thanks for these information, it helped me a lot. All my expensive pallets and other products I have been purchased and after noticing dat container open sign, I got upset certainly.. now um ok with it
Thank you so very much for teaching and keeping the honesty coming out to all of us. Yours is such a valuable and helpful channel. THANK YOU!!
your tutorials are phenomenal. so informative (including the description box). youre a fantastic teacher. please never go away.
Yet another informative video. By the way, I say do what you want with your foundations and such. it's your money and personally I am grateful it's you spending all that money to inform us with excellent information. I thank you.
this is great advice because I've always been interested in creating a huge makeup collection but im always worried itll go out of date and i wont be able to use it all.
awesome video
Oh, and I love how you always fill the information box with actually useful information!!
YAY! I'm glad to know that, because I have eye shadows in almost every colour you could imagine -- I have a lot of quads packs, and special-edition palettes that I don't need to use the colour often but I change things up sometimes, and would hate to have to chuck & rebuy it to use it only once or twice.
I also often think of all the packaging this stuff comes in, because the packaging is almost always manufactured in China, and they don't have the best reputation for being eo-friendly with their plastic factories spewing pollution in the air, and into the rivers! THEN the pollution from having it shipped across the Indian Ocean then up the Atlantic to Europe, or across the Pacific to North American ports.
I'm very glad to know that my eye shadows are likely just fine! THANK YOU SO MUCH for this video, very informative, as always!
Thanks for sharing your advice . I will certainly invest in Beauty so clean makeup cleaner thanks to your recommendation, I never knew of such a product so Thankyou Wayne Goss ♡
My mom had one lipstick at a time, when she passed I took it and it sits on my dressing table next to a candle, it never smelled and I did try it once with no issues. It is a Max Factor, I think that was a big company back in the day.
As a newbie to makeup I’m so thankful I watched this video. I’ve had a chalazion in both my eyes. One of the Worst experiences ever. Thank you for this information because I sure needed it.
i love how you actually care and watch out for your subbies! thanks for the great video
I literally didn't even know that. I always wondered by the symbol was there, I know that sounds dumb, but thanks for addressing this in the video. I always wondered when makeup expired.
Timeless beauty advice! Thumbs up
Love ya!!! Love that you explained to us girls when to toss makeup. Abt 2 yrs ago I cleaned out my makeup collection some things I've had since a few yrs back. This yr spent some money on all new stuff at sephora but an glad you say some powders may last longer tha. The symbol indicates. Love the mascara wand tip.
I never knew a lot of the things you spoke about! The mascara, I knew. As for the disinfect makeup spray, I literally just learned something new!!!! Thank you 💖
I use a disposable wand everytime I use my favorite lipgloss and never double dip so I can use it forver! and I have "Beauty So clean" spray it stops the oil layer on powders and makes them last forever!!!...i am insane!
Well done for saving the planet and looping after the
As long as everything smells and looks good, I'm not throwing it away. I think a lot of make up gurus would have to toss the whole collection haha
Totally agree with u as a makeup artist I use disposable sponge, mascara wand and lipbrush.
Thank you so much for this video,it helped me a lot
Specially when you don't know & you have doubts on keeping your makeup,or tossing it just because of the expiration date 😭 now I can be more comfortable using my makeup & not regretting on how much I spend on it thinking I want going to use it 😁 God Bless.!
Thank you SO much for this one, I was so relieved when you talked about the 5 year test *lol* because I always tend to keep my makeup for far to long!!! Xoxo
This makes me feel a lot better about my tube of mascara I've had since middle school.. I'm on my second year of college now. I've had a couple tubes since then but that one still hasn't ran out & it's my favorite. Maybelline.
as always, super informative and straight to the point! I always learn something new from you. Thank you!
This is very helpful! I'm not into makeup and i only use them for special evenings and occasions (which is probably 15-20 times a year) so i'm very concerned about how long i can keep my makeup.. it would be a waste to throw them 20% used! I'm glad to know the numbers in the containers are just guides and not to be strictly followed :) Thank you for this!
In your old video you say you can use rubbing alcohol you said it was called surgical spay in the uk or something close to that name and you did mention beauty so clean but you said its basically the same thing as the alcohol which was less money. My question is why did you stop using the alcohol and start using beauty so clean was there something the alcohol was doing that was ruining your makeup or was it just a preference. I ask because I can't afford to get the beauty so clean at this moment so I was wondering if it's ok to use the alcohol instead.
I use 91% in a spray bottle and spray all my makeup and brushes. Eyeshadows, powders, liquid foundation, mascara wand, lipsticks, everything! it doesn't hurt my makeup or brushes, and I feel so much safer!
I've been using alcohol for years. none of my products have ever changed in texture or quality. it kills germs and evaporates quickly. not sure why he doesnt use it anymore.
Areza_I am me88☺ Do you even use it on lipgloss?
I use alcohol spray to disenfect
I love how experienced you are !
thanks so much for this video! I watch beauty videos on youtube all the time, but i've never seen one on makeup expiration dates. thanks so much for the tips!
Hmmm, actually, I always go with the smell of a product! I use all my make up only on myself and store it properly so I toss only stuff that have changed smell or texture. ;)
What about setting sprays especially from urban decay???
The UD all nighter has a jar symbol with 6M on it. That's 6 months.... But then it's in a spray bottle and you don't dip things into it, so I'm cautious about that 6 months
This is really helpful, partly explain why I'm getting breakouts and I haven't been going out too much. Thanks for great videos wayne! Appreciate you and your work, sharing all your knowledge on makeup :)
That 5 yr old lipstick revelation is amazing to hear! I'm definitely excited now! Keep up with the wonderful video content. You always manage to keep things fresh, fun, and super informative. Thank you, bunches :)
So is it cool to double dip with our own stuff, like if we're only using it on ourself?
Discard your mascara every 3 months?! :O Damn!
I like keeping my mascara for 7 months then toss it !
I love this so much! Thank you for sharing. Always great content from you.
I always, look forward to seeing what new videos u do everyday, love it
What happened to your left eye, it's red
Shruthi Reddy Lol is he talking about his eye? That’s his business. Have some personal limits and manners!! I know it’s hard.
He got an eye infection from mascara. That's why he's warning about bacteria..
This was really useful! I have always wondered that! Especially with lipsticks and eye shadows since I never seem to run out of them! Thanks! Great video as always.
Gosh you're so great, I'm hooked on your videos haha, love your style because its simple, natural and logical, not overdone :)
I love all your videos Wayne very helpful! Thank you for all that you do for us!! Love you!!!
Hi Wayne, I always tend to keep my makeup for far too long because makeup is so expensive here in Sweden and I was SOO relieved when you talked about the 5 years test *lol* Great video!!
Great video! I have some Mascara by Mally and it is by far the best I've ever used. It's a bit pricey ($20) a tube but u don't need falsies with this mascara. I bought it almost a year ago and it's still plenty of product left, but I guess it's time to get a fresh tube.....I was delighted to find out I can keep my Clinique primer ($27 for a small tube) I've had it a year. I was going to toss it. Thank God I watched this video first. Turns out its good for another year wooo hooo!
Thank you so much for this video ! It was very helpful as I am cleaning my makeup while watching this lol 😊
Mascara is major no no to using to long. I"m on a Revlon kick currently...i've had problems buying brand new mascara at target and the product is so dried out...probably on the shelf too long...so now i buy whatever is the most recent on the shelf. If it says NEW , or you have seen a commercial for it those are great. Also endcaps since they rotate those every few weeks you know those are the newer products that just came in.
That's so true. I have an eyeshadow that I bought 6 years ago and it still works fine!
this is one of your most helpful videos ever!! Not that you're not helpful usually, au contraire cause you really are but this one in particular is awesomer!
I always find your videos very useful! Thank you for sharing your tips and useful advice.
I'm watching the video again today and I have to say you have changed a lot and you are looking sooooo good. Happier and hotter 😊
Thank you for all of your videos!!
Thank you for your advice! I've always felt bad using my older lipsticks and eyeshadows, although they still seem to be in perfect condition. Now I'm guilt-free :)
Your videos are A++++. They are very educational. My makeup application looks so much more natural and I get wonderful compliments.
Thanks Wayne!! Always wanted to clarify..That helped a great deal.
I'm totally addicted to your videos. Can't get tired of them. Best makeup school ever. I just need a cetificate from Goss Makeup Artistry School and I'm ready to conquer the world. LOL Love you.
I need to get that spray!! I didnt know that eyeshadows could be cleaned. amazing!
Thanks for this, I'm really relieved, I'm doing a make up course at the moment and they give you a list of things that should be chucked out after a certain amount of time, mascara is obvious but I was upset because I have some things that are old and didn't want to bin because they still seemed fine to me, so maybe it's just one of those things they have to tell you about, but really it's not so clear cut as that. Thanks again!
I know where to come when I need the 411!!! Thanks again as always, I appreciate this
one of the best youtube gurus!
