WHEN SHOULD I THROW MY MAKEUP & SKINCARE AWAY

- Опубликовано: 1 дек 2019
- I think there's so much speculation about makeup and skincare expiration times, and to be honest the only sure way to be safe is to follow the manufacturers guidelines....however, if you've thrown away the outer packaging, or you can no longer read the date clearly, this video should give you a few guidelines in order to avoid any possible infection.

Wayne Goss said a long time ago "No need to envy the Influencers with all their stuff. They are just sitting there in rooms full of expired make-up" 😅
So true xxx
Note to self - Take a sharpie and write the date opened on the cosmetic product! Need to do this rather than guess if I’ve kept it too long. 😬
Yes I was just commenting that I do that on skincare but I never thought of doing it to makeup
I started doing this on my makeup but never thought to on skincare.
People buy so much makeup that it goes to waste. It is actually a waste of money and an environmental disaster.
Who needs 10 palette and 20 lipsticks?
Good info- makes sense. I must be a miracle because I have been breaking all of these “rules” for 50 years with no problems.😳
Me too!x
Me too !!!!!!!
Yes thank you! We spend so much money on make up there is no way im throwing full palettes away after 2 years
So helpful and eye-opening, Gemma!
I know all the things you said, but...it's so hard to throw the expensive products away 😩. And if you really think about it, it's such a waste (of product AND money). When do you ever hit pan in an eyeshadow palette with 20 shades??? And most of us will own more than one palette 😱.
Crazy, but I only put stickers with the opening date on liquid products 🙄😳. Have to change this!!!
By the way...I still keep my wedding lipstick, 23 years now 😉. But don't worry, I don't use it....just sweet memories 💑.
As always: Thanks Gemma 💟!
Hugs and kisses, Sabine 😘
I can honestly say I learn so much from each of your videos. I never knew the expire time was in that little icon. I never thought to clean my sharpener etc. So much great info in this vid alone. I am really in need to throw some make up out so this vid has given me the kick to do so.
Thank you for taking time to do the videos.
I didn't know that expire time was on products either!
I put the date I started using it on the bottom in sharpie. I keep both black and silver sharpies just in case the black won't work. The sharpies stay in the jar with my odds and ends. Keeps me straight.
Ok this is a good reason not to over collect make-up. It's painful to throw out a $45 ABH pallette after 18 months, especially when it's a pallette I use in the summer only. I'm all about BH, cheap, always sales and I have my everyday favorite that I know I really use regularly. And if it's time to Chuck it, no hard feelings! Very good tips Gemma!
I was completely unaware that my dry powder makeup can expire. Thank you for posting this video! I now have an explanation for a lot of my skin issues... while I am aggravated to discover I have caused several of them myself, by refusing to throw out old makeup when I should, I am grateful to have a solution. This weekend, the makeup hoard will be thoroughly purged, and my skin will being to heal!
So informative. I really need to go through the painful process of purging. It is so hard to let go when I think about the money I have spent on products. This video is so timely for me. Thank you.
Suntan lotions are really important when it comes to expiry. When I worked in a chemist years ago we used to tell customers not to use their lotions for more than 2 summers, but that was before all the new labelling. I am ashamed to say that I have an eyeshadow that I should part with, but it has memories of happy times selling make up when I worked in the chemist for 11 years!xxx
I know exactly what you mean, I had to part with a lot of makeup that had great memories attached, I wasn't using it but I wouldn't let go either, it was hard.
The trouble with all these use by dates is that when you go in shops like Boots you see people opening bottles to smell the product, so it makes a mockery of these dates.
Always buy sealed makeup. xxx
Such a great informative video Gemma. I love the tip on shaking the bottles which I am going to do now. Most of my skincare is either dropper or pump but for any others I have a little spatula that I use. Another thing I have done for years is I keep all my perfumes in their original boxes so they are protected from the light ❤️ xx
This video is going to be sky high in views, since we ALL want to know what’s acceptable in keep time. Gives a big thumbs up to this overdue video!
Great tips.Early this year when I heard about this I remember having to throw out a few eyeshadow palettes I had kept for years...it hurt to part with them! I now try not to collect more makeup than I need so that its not wasted. I never thought to sanitize my sharpener, will have to get some alcohol and give that a going over along with the lipsticks. Thanks for this information Gemma, very helpful. Have a great day xx
Thanks for this video, I never knew there was an expiration date on an eyeshadow palette, now I do. Wow it makes spending on makeup a lot more informative and expensive if you don't use the product, lol. I wish more people would advise us about this but always know you are looking out for us Gemma!. Thanks so much!
Brilliant, thank you so much this was exactly what I needed to hear. So I need to use what I have and cut back on what I buy. Very helpful
Oh dear, I need to do some spring cleaning of the makeup drawer!
Thank you. No stone was left unturned!
Going to clean all my sharpeners. Did not even think of that but makes sense. Thanks so much.
This was great information! I really do clean my brushes after 1 or the most 2 uses. I thought I might be over doing the clean but I would say no after watching this. I don’t like the way my sponges feel after I use them and I just learned the foaming Dawn is a great clearner! I mean they are clean quick. Thanks 🙏
I use those little white medicine spoons to scoop out lotions. Easily sterilized in the dishwasher then placed (with the others) into a sterile sandwich bag. Use the 2.5ml size, perfect amount for creams.
Fantastic vid. Never thought to sterilize my sharpners tho 🙈🙈. 💗💗💗💗
Thank you Gemma for this info. I must check my makeup and throw some out. Good reason buy more 😊 x
Great skincare/makeup advice! I love it! ❤
Good video and I would say to parents, really be careful about giving old used makeup to your kids. My daughter ended up in A&E a few years ago after sharing some old makeup her friends mum had given her. She came home and complained of a headache and went to bed, literally a few hours later she woke being sick and one eye was completely swollen and red - it looked horrific. She ended up with strong antibacterial eye drops and had burst blood vessels in the eye, if we’d left it she could have lost the sight in that eye! Seriously scary. X
H, Gemma! Great information!.... I confess I not always have respected these rules because I was not
completly aware about all the risks we take ,by not following them. From now on ,I will not forget your
precious advice. Thank you very much. ❤️
Don’t companies have to put an expiration date by law rather than when a product actually expires? Pretty sure they do and the makeup actually lasts far longer, safely.
Your brow game is next level these days. Lookin Fab! 😍😍👌
Brilliant ! The best information as always ! 🇨🇦
Thanks for the tutorial, Gemma!!!! This is an important topic for us to be aware of!!! I wasn't aware of the time limits on products, Thanks!!!👍👏🤙🏻🙏 Kristie K.
Thank you for this video. I never noticed the time stamp on the eyeshadow palettes and powder compacts. Now I know. Oops the Dior eyeshadow palettes say 6mos. I’ve had mine a lot longer. A lot!
I do keep wiping the top layers off. ☺️
I had no idea of the expiration date on products, thank you so much.
OK. I'm the 20 year hoarder and I'm going to throw them out. I just wanted you to know that this video has had the desired effect. Thank you, as I say goodbye to some eyeshadow that's probably terrible for me.
Very interesting Gemma, think I have some sorting out to do!
Great idea for a video! I never would've have thought to sanitize a sharpener. I could listen to your adorable accent all day!🥰
Thank you soooooo much for this information. I didn't know make up had an expiry date. I will be checking all my stash and more than likely losing 95% of it. Better safe than sorry.👍💄
I try to date each product when I open it. Also creams that come in big jars, I dispense smaller amts into a small clean container to limit air exposure & bacteria growth.
But I have never sanitized any stick product 😲
Great advice thanks, literally had no idea with some of this! Some of my stuff definitely needs to go! Just wish the makeup brands made stuff more recyclable and environmentally friendly as it’ll all end up in landfill ☹️🙈xx
Hello wolf pack friends. Hope everyone is doing great today
Great information! You look gorgeous too !!
Great topic Gemma! Along with visual cues of freshness, I also use my nose. I always give it a good sniff because sometimes it will develop an off odor before it starts to separate, etc.., especially if the product contains any oils. I will periodically spray down my powder eye shadows with 91% rubbing alcohol to sanitize them between uses. Cream or liquid products I use on or around my eyes get replaced every 3 months, this includes mascaras. :)
@Diana Moore No, not at all. In fact, if you accidentally smash anything that is pressed powder you can repair them with alcohol. You just crush all the pieces into loose powder in the pan or compact it came in, then drizzle or slowly pour rubbing alcohol over it to saturate. Then let it sit until it's bone dry. It won't look perfect like when it was new but the pressed aspect of it is restored and ready to be used again. :)
@Diana Moore There are many youtube videos showing how to do it so you can follow along. :)
I clean all my palettes this way. Works great.
Oh dear, I guess it time to throw out some very old favourites- you have reminded me of the wisdom of not keeping makeup for too long. 🤣🤣
Gemma, I ordered and received your beautiful large pink Pampered Wolf make up bag. It is so pretty and roomy. I love it! This video is yet another winner that has great advice.
great video very informative, I just need to remember when I first opened the products:)
The problem is that you never find exactly the same favourite shade
This was an excellent video. I recently cleaned out a few items but it's time for more to go. Thanks for sharing this valuable information.
On my skincare I write the date I open it on the bottom with a sharpie but I don't do it on my makeup, I'm not going to remember when I opened what 🙄.
Thank you so much for this much needed video
Thank you thank you thank you so much for this video! I needed this, sending love from across the pond in Levittown, PA 💖🌞
How many out there in the Wolfpack have had infections breakouts, etc. from using old makeup? Do you know somebody that had a problem? I have normal to dry skin and I use a blush on occasion that I have had for over 6 years.
I had countless eye infections until I realized they were caused by old eyeshadow.
Hello Gemma, I love your video and also enjoy those you have done with your lovely Mom.
I picked up the Clarins Everlasting foundation after your video. The no7 sounds great, but that exact type has yet to arrive. I will keep my eyes out.
And finally, your makeup today is perfect.
Thanks, Susan (56 years)
Thank you so much! Really valuable info.
xo, Trish
I have so many palettes that have expired! I've used them very little because I have so many. I just can't bring myself to throw them out. They were so expensive!🙄
So much helpful information, Gemma...inspiring me to purge my old makeup which I hate to do... wish I had a chart to keep track but I do put stickers with opening dates on my liquid foundation- Thanks so much Gemma! ☺️💕💄
Your look in this video is so radiant, natural and flattering! 😊
Thank you for another great video and timely topic Gemma. I had recently discarded some products I estimated that were too old. It’s so great to have some guidelines now.
I'm over here, trimming the mould off my cheese... These dates mean nothing to me (except for actives and mascara)... xXx
Hi Jena,.
Thank you for recommending Clarins “ Everlasting youth fluid” foundation 🙏😊. I am 45 years old and tried many foundations but this one is great. I have oily skin but it works even though it’s illuminating foundation. I am so happy to stop looking for foundation because it’s pricey to buy new ones often. But thanks to you I don’t have to spend extra anymore.
Best wishes Alona.
Gemma, thank you for the great information.
After watching this video I got rid of soooo much makeup! Thank you so much for this! Now I know a lot more of what to look out for. Kind of makes you think more when buying makeup cos it's like you want it to have a longer life I.e my blushes were only good for 12 months. I've been using them way longer! Wish they would make them with a longer life. But anyways, thank you for this!
Hi Gemma i must but in hear as you list the reasons for thtowing your products away. Add smell to the list the reason for this is this, one day i opened my Urban Decay Naked 3 palette and i can only describe a nasty gone off type of smell assaulted my nostrils. The smell was akin the stale sweat. Sadly i had to immedietelly throw it away well before it expired. I have since repurchased this palette as it was at the time my favourite eyeshadow palette. I then had to go through my collection of 49 palettes and threw away a further 2 palettes and sanitized the rest. I go through them every 3 to 4 months to be on the safe side.
🌷 Thank you Sweet's 💛
Great information Gemma! Really helpful to know those expiration guidelines.
Wayne Goss did a video on this years back. He also suggested using a product called beauty so clean. Good stuff and apparently a lot of mua's use it!! Just thought it was worth a mention! xXx
Abigail Porter thank you so much for the information, I just ordered a bunch of sanitizers from them..I just cannot justify throwing out all my cosmetics that I’ve spent so much money on..
@@saadetisildar2951 no worries, glad I could help in some way! I used it on a bunch of stuff that I could then pass onto our niece , theres been no issue with it. I'll be doing the same with my own stuff too on the regular because like you, I've got too much to ditch. If you type in Wayne Goss beauty so clean to the YT search bar it should bring up his video , it was done quite a few years ago but the method is still the same. 😁
Wow I never knew that the months to use was on these products. I have a few really old nail polishes! 😳 xx
I'm embarrassed to admit that I never really thought about expiration dates for my makeup! I knew about some skin care products. But I now need to go through my make up and take a serious look!
My mother always had one of each product. One eyeshadow, one foundation, one lipstick, one blush etc. When the product emptied only then she would buy a new. So not much expiring there except perhaps the eyeshadow.
An absolutely useful video. Thanks a lot for sharing it, Gemma. ❤️❤️👍👍 (I told you I would watch it) In fact, I love all your videos. Hugs to you and your mum. 😘😘
As always another great and informative video. I kind knew it all but a great refresher. Going to do a big purge this week 😊 On a different note I love how your eyebrows look here 😍 only with I could do mine like that 😊
Thank you so much for this informative video. I have not heard anyone else do this
I always run my mascara under a warm to hot tap or stick it in a mug of hot water for a few minutes if it’s gone a bit dry, I’d never put anything in the tube - I’d make a real mess apart from it would ruin the formula I’m sure!
I am so happy you did this video! I learned so much. Thank you.
Confession... I kept a limited edition face palette by Clinique for 20 years! Ofcourse I wouldn't use it but I just couldn't part from it! It looked so pretty in my vanity😅 Am I the only one?
Konstantina Akrivou no, I have mac lipsticks that are 7 years old and I’m not throwing them out !
I think the oldest one I have is 6 years, I did threw some but not all. but I can't imagine throwing Tom Ford eyeshadow palettes or Chanel highlighter I own. I don't think I'm even capable of that :D
A wonderful video and a great service to your viewers. I’m off to double check. Eyesight is too precious to risk!
I recently went through my stuff and got rid of a lot after the moldly lipstick launch. Raw Beauty Kristi & her microscope were my inspiration. 😱😂
I’m good about mascara. I toss those at 3 months.
I need to sanitize my pencils. And be more careful about stuff in the sunlight from my bedroom window.
This is great advice as it is a topic often not discussed. I became a bit obsessed with it a couple of years ago! I have noticed that some of my make up does not have the icon on for how long to keep it even though the brand follows this with their other products. I have learned a great deal watching your videos and have just indulged in my first Hourglass purchase after rewatching your review. I’ve got the blusher quad 😍 Thank you for all the advice you give and to your Mum too xx
I bought the 6 pan palette. There's no way I'm tossing that 'as recommended' since I only use makeup once a week or so. I'll spray it with alcohol every couple of months and use clean brushes only.
@@jos.4276 thank you for that tip. I'm going to get some alcohol. I've asked localy but it isn't stocked, so if I have no success in the city I'll try amazon x
@@elizabethy3153 I bought the alcohol and a spray bottle at Walgreens (a drugstore chain in the US.)
Jo Swearingen I’m in the UK, I’ve searched my local stores online and it does not appear to be available, however I have found some on amazon. I appreciate your advice Jo you’ve been very helpful. Thank you 😊 x
Your lashes are rocking it, Gemma!!!
Thank you for sharing. I actually had a lot of expired makeup to throw away :') omg and I've been using it for months since it's expired
Gemma, I forgot to thank you for such a wonderfully informative video! So, THX so much! Xoxo Leslie
When you mention sanitizing lipstick with alcohol, how exactly should we do that?
I put alcohol in a spray bottle and spray them.
I dip mine xxx
mac muas do it, to sanitise lipsticks that customers test.
Hey Gemma :-))) Great video :-)) My daughter got a sore eye a few good years ago with a bad mascara and told me about the little box at the back of products, so since then I've been careful. I would say i put more makeup testers on my hand and my makeup collection is not big, i keep an eye on it lol. oxoxoxox
Thank You for all the great information!!
Very helpful!
I had a heart attack August 26th 2020 n Double bypass open heart surgery September 1st 2020. As a result, i couldn't go anywhere for months so, no need to put makeup on. That and i physically couldn't do it for months. I was going through my makeup recently and had to throw most (I'd say about 75-85%) of my makeup away. As it had expired.
Haha, I went through my makeup bag last month and found a Ruby+Millie lipstick from about 2004 (if you remember them, they've now gone their separate ways). I was so upset as it was a great colour for me!!
Hi Gemma, such a good video, thanks!!!👍🤩 It's a while ago you made it but can I still ask a question about it? I have al the Beauty So Clean products, take very well care of my make up and brushes/sponges. Does that make the expiry dates longer, do you know? It's such a waist of my beautiful products otherwise. Have a nice day!!!👍😘😘
Just did a major clean out of makeup, about time!!!
Yes I am guilty of keeping products well beyond their use by date, even if I don't use them.
Good video. Very helpful. Thank you.
Ty soooo much cause I thought those fridges were just plain nuts lol
You will cringe when you read this. I have two eyeshadow palettes from around 1977 ish - yes that's right - around 43 years .... BUT, I haven't used them for a very very very long time. The reason for keeping them is nostalgia. My brother and his wife bought them for me as Christmas presents when I was around 14 and it was my first ever 'proper' make up. I just can't bear to part with them. One is greens, golds and browns, the other is blues, greys and pinks from Marks & Spencer would you believe or St Michael as the brand was then. Both say Fragrance Free on the tin - how forward thinking was that in those days!!
Gemma, wouldn’t it be nice if you could have an actual makeup chemist on your channel to give us the inside scoop? I managed Drug Stores for years before I retired, and I started in the cosmetic dept. I know first hand how long makeup can sit on the shelf before it’s purchased. It would freak you out! Xoxo Leslie
Hey Gemma. Cheryl from Charlottesville Virginia here. Wondering if you found out the type of magnifying mirror your Mum recently bought. And I’m having a friend pick up The No 7 Luminous foundation when she goes to London next week. So excited. Think I’ll get Calico then the next darker shade. Do you know, off hand, what that color shade would be. Hard to find info on it where it’s not available in the USA yet. 😘Thank You !! Cheryl
I don't I'm afraid Cheryl xxx
The next two shades are cool vanilla and warm ivory. They’re pretty similar in darkness, but as the names suggest are suitable for either cool or warm skin tones. I use calico in winter and cool vanilla in summer.
Mummy Giraffe
Thank you so much for that information Mummy G. It’s very kind of Gemma’s Wolfpack to step in and help her out. I know she’s a busy gal and I appreciate you for taking time out of your Mummy G day to give me guidance!! Thank you 😘😘
RIP half my make up bag🤣⚰️
Watching this while cleaning out my bathroom cabinets.. What about the nail polish? I threw out all the dry and thick looking ones, but is there an expiration date?
There is but nail polish contains a lot of chemicals that prolong the life of it xxx
I think Wayne Goss recommended spraying palettes with alcohol to sanitize them. I do it every few months. How do you sanitize a pencil sharpener? Soak it in alcohol?
Rub it with alcohol xxx
Omg. I was just thinking this. I give my toddler my old makeup/things I haven’t used to make potions (not apply to face) with while I get ready. I feel my hoarder vibes tingle but how are you supposed to remember when u bought it???? I need to put opening dates on them maybe??
Yay!!! The perfect reason to buy me lots of new makeup! 😅👍🏻
I just started going through with my make-ups and realized I need to throw the majority of them away
I always wash my hands before, during & after. During usually when I add a serum upon the other sunscreen etc... Actually, have a question. Could we transfer potted pots to sterile pumps? I buy the glass pumps for Aloe Vera which I use through out my day at work. Now of course, I date it. Perhaps, could get a month or more from the serums? Thank you. I truly enjoy your informative video's. Amazing.
Yes you could transfer xxx
Great tips.
My Too Faced chocolate bar has gone off without me realising (no change in smell, performance) and only after using it for 2 days and developing an eye infection so bad it required antibiotics, everything that I had over the expiry date went to the bin.
