I'm making this video on makeup expiration dates because I don't want you to freak out! So many of you commented on my Dior palette and how it will expire sooner but I bet you have makeup that has expiration dates that are expired in your collection. There are some things you need to look for and I'll talk about it in the video. Bottom line is to always use common sense.

The only thing I try to throw out is my mascara every 3 months. I saw a Dr.OZ SHOW where the lady had”old makeup” but when they tested it there was no bacteria found. I agree if it smells or looks funny then it should go. They have put out so much makeup in the last 2 years it is insane! Thanks 😊

  • @Loripford

The expiration dates are just a way for companies to cover their butts. It mandatory for them. It doesn’t mean the stuff is actually no good. Honestly its the same way with some medications and even food. People should just use their senses to know wether or not to use the item. Common sense is helpful too lol

Found an old Max Factor liquid foundation, half full, must of been 20+ years old. Curiosity. Tried it and was fine, but too light, probably why I didn't use it up. Miss Max Factor in the US.
Makeup Artists generally use pallettes to put product on, like a painters pallette. In the old days, was called a smashbox as they would crush product into cells, including cuts of lipstick.
    Thanks Anne!

much ado about nothing lol- i have makeup which is at least 10 years or more old - they are perfect. pigments do not expire and if they do, the fist thing that goes is the intensity of the shade or texture. it’s 2 things: 1. fda has gotten more vigilant and 2. companies are counting on the fear factor for people to keep buying. the whole issue is ludicrous. just use your smell , eyes and don’t let anyone else use it. mascara is the only product that should be tossed periodically.

I make an inventory sheet so I know. Plus I put the date purchased. Then I look at my inventory sheet every three months. It takes me 9 months to use a Pallette. I tend to turn over my palettes after 6 months to my daughter. On a really sunny day I take my 30 pallettes and spray them with isopropyl in a mist bottle. Even my blush, bronzers. I tend not to buy cream items except for foundation. I use my lipstick for blush. I mist my lipstick...all 30+ of them and mist them with isopropyl 90%. Excellent topic. Have a beautiful day. Hugs 🤗 and Aloha 🌺😁

I agree with you 100%. I never think of expiration dates on makeup. Mascara is the only thing that I do replace if I've had it longer than 3-4 months. Otherwise, I don't throw makeup out unless the color changes or it smells weird. In my estimation, having expiration dates on makeup is a way for companies to have people buy products more often. I think people should use their own judgement and common sense.

Mascara you want to toss after 3 months. Doesn’t matter if it still looks new and not dried up. I’ve worked in the beauty industry for 20 yrs and mascara I would definitely toss after 3 months and eyeliners after 1 yr. Shadows and other powder products are safer to use past their expiration dates. Anything that’s cream based like foundations or cream blushes I’d toss after 18 months.

I so agree with you. I actually found a purple/lilac Dior eyeshadow palette that I think I bought over 20 years ago if not even longer 🙈🙊. There was no funky smell and the colours still worked well. But that one I did through away, only because I just have way too much makeup now. But it's like you said, before new makeup only came maybe 2-4 times a year. Now there is new makeup almost every week/month. Not even makeup artists can get through their makeup by the expiration date. The only thing I am careful with is mascara, because that gets dry or smelly. And moisturizers and faceoils can get a bad smell or change texture. The that goes in the trash. So no need to freak out. Thanks for easing peoples minds girl. Take care 🥰. Love your pink 💖 top. I have one which was given to me from my sister and i noticed the shadow didn’t go on as smoothly as before. But that was just one of the shadows. I generally keep the ones I love. Love your thumbnail! LOL
The reason that most companies give such short expiration dates is because they want you to toss them and repurchase. That's how they make their money. With the exception of mascara, I think the rest is crazy.
Unless it smells funky, or tastes weird (lipstick, glosses, etc), I think it's just common sense.
I swear my mom had lipsticks for at least 5 years if not longer. Maybe there were more preservatives back then.
We are on the same wavelength!!
Donating makeup is gross! Yes, maybe something I've used once or twice, I'll give to my girls, but not mascara or eyeliner.

There is NO DOUBT I have plenty of expired makeup but I handle it basically the way you do. You just have to use your own common sense. I know I probably have more makeup than the average woman because I have always loved it. The way I do items I no longer use is I will ask my daughter if she wants it and if not I toss it. I would never buy or sell used makeup, who would do that??? I will use an item as long as it looks and smells good. If it starts smelling or looking off I toss it!! I am with you too on the coconut oil on the face and I have dry skin. I don't think it belongs on your face, I have heard it can clog pores. Thank you for sharing that info about the old Chanel bronzer verses the new. Thankfully I have the old one and was not aware the new one contained coconut oil. Have a great week girlfriend!!!

I have items years and years old that don't smell or look bad. Personally, I think they put dates so we feel like we should throw out and buy more. Come on everyone it's merchandising. Before retirement I worked in the food industry for 40 years and believe me many dates and practices are due to companies getting sued for careless reasons. Some are safety reasons but most were do to sue happy consumers, I saw that every day. Good luck everyone.

I would only throw out eyeshadow if it has a weird film on top or smells weird, if it is irritating/itching my eyes, or if the quality/pigment of the eye shadow has degraded considerably and is difficult to use. You can get away with keeping powder products almost indefinitely and just use common sense in terms of how the product looks/performs. I too probably wouldn't have much makeup if I had to throw it away based on the "expiration date". I also agree with you on donating/sharing makeup. I think makeup is in the personal care category and it's gross to be sharing it. You wouldn't donate or sell your used toothbrush so why would you sell your used eye shadow/mascara? I've seen people put on a full face makeup using testers at ulta and it makes me cringe when I think about how many other people have used that or dipped their dirty fingers into the product it's very unsanitary. Thanks for the video this was extremely entertaining to watch and you are stunning!!

It’s not food. Like you said, if it separates, smells funny, has changed it’s texture etc, I am not throwing it out. Lipsticks, I buy a minimum so I am not wasting my money.

I think if you exclusively use your pallette then I'd use it well past the expiration, but if it's shared with others, I'd be more likely to toss it.
I've also noticed "all natural" or without preservatives spoils so quickly.

    Oh....expiration date on make up???...
    never noticed...oops...😅
Besides mascara, which I renew every 3-4 months, I don't throw anything out unless it smells, starts to look yucky or doesn't work/apply nicely. I think the expiration date is required by law and what it really means is that the manufacturer guarantees the quality of the product till that time, after that if perhaps the color has oxidized or the powder isn't a workable anymore etc. it's not on them cause they don't guarantee the quality after the expiration date, does not mean the product has gone bad. Like u said, use clean brushes and occasionally spray a bit of alcohol to sanitize.
Thanks Anne for this video, and for keeping it real.

I only through mascara away after three months and that is because I wear contact lenses and I wouldn't want to have any irritation, otherwise I have had shadows, blushes and lipsticks that are absolutely ok for years and years without any issue. Skincare I would throw away and foundation if it smells weird but powder stuff no.
