"Unbelievable Campfire Cooking: Pizza Over Open Flames

- This week I'm taking you along on a truck camping adventure into a forest north of Backus Minnesota. It's on a trail system called the Spider Lake Recreation Area. There are miles of trails for ATV and 4x4 off-road enthusiasts. Scatted throughout the hills, valleys, lakes, and forest are multiple opportunities for dispersed camping. Some campsites have picnic tables and fire rings, while others only have fire pits made with rocks.
By the time I got off of work Friday, the rain had turned into snow, and the roads were horrible. My first stop was in a State Forest a couple hours from home, a single dispersed campsite on Perch Lake. When I arrived, I found the trail leading in was extremely steep and full of ruts. I was afraid if I went down the hill, I wouldn't be able to make it back up. At this point I did not have cell service and was striking out on finding a campsite. (It was an extremely dark night) I knew of a State Forest Campground about 30 minuets north, so I made the drive hoping to find a safe spot to sleep for the evening.
I arrived at the Campsite on Bass Lake but was not excited about it. Although it was dark and I couldn't see much, I didn't feel like this was the camping spot for me. I remembered there was a free single campsite on a lake a few miles down the road. Mandi and I had stayed there a few years ago. Although I like visiting a different campsite every week, it was getting late, and I was ready to go to sleep.
By 1:30 am I had the camper parked and was feeling good about my weekend home. The next morning, I awoke to the sound of banging beside the camper. I looked out the window to find a group of fishermen unloading an ice shack from their truck. I couldn't be frustrated or upset, they have just as much of a right to be there as me....and I was a little jealous they were going to be spending a full day on the lake. Their trucks were parked next to the campfire ring. It would have been inconsiderate of me to start a fire that close to them, so I decided that this spot wasn't going to work for me either.
At this point I was unsure if I was going to make a video. I was thinking about going home and working on a few projects that needed to be done, my plow truck is not starting. I thought this was the universes way of telling me I needed to take a break. In a last-ditch effort, I decided to check out this trail system on my way home. That is when I came across this beautiful campsite sitting on top of a hill overlooking a lake with no name. I knew this was going to be my home for the weekend.
I hope you enjoy the video!
Since you have read this far Ill assume you are a supporter of the channel. I really want to thank you for that. The comments you leave, along with a thumbs up, really help with the algorithm pushing my videos to a new group of potential viewers and subscribers. The channel has been growing over the last few months. After 2.5 years of recording my weekend adventures people are starting to watch the videos. This unfortunately is a double-edged sword. Along the outpouring words of kindness and support in the comment section, there are also the sad people that try to spread hate when they see someone doing something they love. I realize not everyone is going to like the videos, or my personality. I'm completely fine with that. I have also learned that sometimes a comment will come off as negative, only because the contexts get mixed up in translation. I really appreciate all the constructive criticism. That is how I learn if there's something that needs changing.
However, the last few weeks, the comment section has been tainted by people saying hateful things. I receive disgusting comments saying my girlfriend must hooking up some other dude while I'm in the camper or accusing me of being horrible father for not staying home with my kids on my days off work. I delete the comments and move on, but I can't say it doesn't affect my willingness to press record and make a video.
With that being said, I decided to not spend as much time in the comment section. I'm no longer going to read the comments before, or while I'm out camping. They get me in a funk, and I don't want them effecting my weekends. I'll still be reading and responding on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, but not to every single comment like I've done in the past. I have also removed the Super Thanks donation tab; I don't want to receive a donation from someone and then not respond to them.
It seems like there's always someone that is trying to drag you down. It reminds me of something I recently saw on VanCity Vanlife. Chrome was answering questions, the most asked question was 'why did you and Emme break up'? Chromes answer..."It's because of RUclips, the people in the comment section ruined their relationship."
I'm going to keep doing what I love. There is a reason why I look for isolation in nature, it heals my soul. And I'm super thankful for all the kind supportive people that want to follow along.
Thanks
When I got the notification, I dropped everything, grabbed my cup of coffee, and settled in my cozy spot to unwind. You my good sir are just amazing, very amazing. Thank you so much for the dedication and hard work
Thank you I appreciate that
Agree. Great comment
I agree!! I’m currently out on the road in my TC but I still watch Kenny! Love his channel! ~M
Hi Kenny. I have just found your channel. I'm in England, there are very few wild places here and is a battle to camp. But I do manage it. Nothing like your places though. Please can you tell me what batteries you use as I notice you have a lot of appliances. Thanks for the channel. I have loads to watch.
Before I became a full timer, I would go camping as often as possible. But the day I had to go back home was always a little depressing. Now I don’t have to deal with that.
OMG! Pizza on the fire, especially in the snow! Dang man you r the Mann!!! i wanna be you, I enjoy your weekly episodes. I'm here stuck in California, hoping to move to Idaho soon to be with my daughter in law. Keepe em coming love you dude.
Love your videos, you have a Steve Wallis vibe!
Thanks for doing what you do . My wife and I watch you every Tuesday . We live in upstate New York, but are currently hanging out in Florida for a month in our 2003 arctic fox 990 . Love your ideas you come up with for the camper and your videos always take the stress out of life
I’m watching from upstate NY too 😊
My best luck is making Calzones over the fire with those sandwich fold over cast iron things 😅
Excellent video, thanks for sharing. The pizza looked great. I like spinach in omelettes, and it looked good on that pizza. Keep up the great work…. Oh, and please carry an extra flashlight if you’re walking around in the dark woods.
It's Tuesday ty kenny great videos
First time viewer from SD.
Good video, you conveyed the experience well. Thanks!
Outstanding, Thanks
I thought the place you camped at was beautiful always look forward to your videos Casey’s pizzas are the best I use to make them years ago
Both made pizzas in our new videos 😁🍕
I would love to make a Casey's Pizza in that oven you had. Thanks for the mention in your video.
@@KennyOfAllTrades Of course brother, you have great content and many will enjoy it
Hmm you’ll have to perfect the fire pit pizza yet, 🤔Remember, a lot of cheese makes a pizza soggy when cooked in the oven right, so are u thinking what i’m thinking? 😁 lol 🍻
Looks like you got the drone fixed?
I got lucky. On Thursday, I received the replacement drone from DJI that I broke a few months back. I figured I'd be without a drone for a few weeks. It's funny how things work out.
Thanks Kenny, I hope you know how much your videos mean to an old 74 year old. I can feel like I’m right out there with you. I love every single little detail that you show, it makes it more real to me.
74 is definitely not old! I just turned 70 in the Fall, and I feel like a college sophomore. Drinking beer, and birddogging co-eds. You're only as old as you feel compadre. Now, get out there with Kenny, and show him what for!
Know how you feel. I'm 70 and I love his videos too.
Best channel on RUclips
Hey Kenny ya know that’s why ranch dressing was invented hey. To moisten that there crust when it gets a bit too hard. Well thats what my auntie Carol from Plainfield Wisconsin says. Great video
Lol. She's got a good point. 👍
Kenny, your videos are a soothing, beautiful escape for me. I look forward to Tuesday nights, partially because I generally have Weds off, but mostly because I can get my Minnesota Solitude fix 😊 I work retail, and my current life will not permit me to take off alone into the woods, so I enjoy it through your hard work. Your videos are just getting better and better, you have a real eye for beauty and how best to get it to come across in a video. Don’t let the idiots ruin it for you - their crassness and venom are just a symptom of what a miserable life they lead. They cannot tarnish the good you do in the world (though I’m sure it’s hellish to read). Enjoy your peace and your coffee, my friend!
Thank you for the kind words.
I work retail as well and definitely understand time off.
I so look forward to your adventures every week Kenny.
Me too. Kenny's videos are just so feel-good & warm (despite it being Winter in Minnesota) ☃️😄 Pure bliss.
Hey Kenny, thanks for sharing your weekend. I was watching Larry’s video before yours came out and he was talking about how cold it is in the desert when it gets down into the low 40s and I was thinking that you should invite him up to Minnesota in February and show him what it’s really like when it’s cold.😂
Right! The highs next weekend are going to be -5 to -10 degrees with a -30 below wind chill during the day. I think it will be a perfect weekend to find some frozen waterfalls. We will have to get Larry up here to experience that.
Would you believe I watched the whole video, and forgot to leave a thumbs up?
Here's a cute story.
My middle son just got a new lab puppy.
He decided to name him Kenny
Honest to God
That makes me smile! I love it. Thanks for sharing 👍 😊
Awe ❤
One day of camping and you still pull something out of the bag. Great job & great editing!! Cheers! ~M
Thanks! I thought I was gonna get skunked last weekend. I'm glad I decided to drive through forest.
Lovely music you've put with this week's video.
The downside of watching you cooking/eating on your videos is each time, I gain 5 pounds!
I'm so sorry to hear the trolls are yapping in the comments. Keyboard Warriors, hiding out, making stupid comments. I look forward to your videos every week. So peaceful, beautiful forests, great scenery and good food. My wish for you this new year is I hope you catch more fish! Edit: I hate it when strangers mess with someone's relationship! They don't know the full situation, the personalities or circumstances, so they shouldn't make judgements or comments. I'm glad you can ignore the idiots and find peace in the forest. Btw, I really like your ending message. It's a great reminder to us all.
Yes I really like it too. I have written it in my Bible.
I love Tuesdays now as I know there is a new Kenny of All Trades video coming out. I so look forward to each and every one of them!!
I feel like I’ve stumbled upon the Bob Ross of overlanding. This is exactly the camping/overlanding channel I’ve been looking for.
Great intro to the video. I loved the music. Looks like you got a new drone, too. The footage was awesome, and you're no amateur. I am jealous of you even if it's just for two nights. Makes the next week manageable.
You have gotten so much better in the production values of your videos since I started watching your channel. Awesome appropriate music for the mood, great scenery shots and good flow. My son went to college for video editing and he tells me a lot of this stuff. Excellent job, you have quickly become one of my favorite channels. Being in the oilfield located in the "sphincter" of Texas, the pretty shots and calming tempo is appreciated.
I'm in the break room and started laughing out loud from your comment. Thanks for making my day! I appreciate the kind words as well.
We are in western North Dakota and it’s -37 with the windchill today and forecasted to be -54 mid Saturday. We just want to get this freeze out of the way & look forward to our camping days! We love watching your videos! Hoping to get Minnesota on the list for camping this year…if not then definitely next year!
That's cold! Stay safe. I see we are forecasted for -5 for the daytime high on Sunday. I'm going to make sure I have a few layers on for the video this weekend. Keep warm this weekend, and maybe we will bump into each other one day.
Sitting with my cup of coffee watching your latest video. Love the scenery, you are always going to great places until next week. Your pizza looked great.
Heat the the stone up and then slide the pizza on it. I think docking the dough might have been the reason the crust dried out. Keep on Trucking. Enjoy your videos.
Was docking putting holes in it? I don't know anything about pizzia....but I do know I love it. My favorite is the Neopolitan style in a wood fired oven. I found a few recipes on RUclips. I was surprised to see how much of an art form making cust is. That scared me away a little. But I found the 00 flour, so I'll be making one someday.
SUGGESTION for soft crust you must keep it away from the direct heat. Your final lowering caused it to get hard. The crust is very thin and heat takes that moisture out quickly.what u made is brick oven pizza. You had a great idea keeping that pan underneath and pizza up high off of coals bc u actually trapped heat to cook the top of the pizza and slowly cook the bottom. A little more patience and itwould have cooked how you wanted it. Nice vids
This makes a lot of sense. I will definitely keep the direct heat off the stone the next time. Thanks for the tip!
thanks for the info. I was wondering about it too. Pizza looked amazing......
This is the comment I was looking for. Nice job, OP.
Kenny, another great video. Thanks for taking us along on your weekend. Always look forward to Kenny Tuesdays! Thanks for all your efforts.
You're doing great things, Kenny; don't let the negative comments get to you. All of those pizza places you mentioned are great.
Please ignore the nay-sayers. I love your channel and look forward to your videos.
Hi, Kenny, always great to spend time watching your videos,
Thank you
New subscriber here, anyway dont let any negative comments bother you or anyone who doesnt like the videos, they're jealous because they can't get out every weekend and do what you enjoy doing.
Thanks for that. I really appreciate that you took the time to read the video description. I'm glad you found the channel.
@@KennyOfAllTrades you're welcome, I've been binge watching them for a few days, I really enjoy the content, I love watching you prepare your meals, you're not afraid to show the minor mishaps, it's just wholesome entertainment.
Maybe two flashlights instead of one 😊
Kenny, stick that little one I sent in your coat pocket and forget it until you need it.
Good idea!
Tuesdays and snow camping, does it get any better? Love these videos!
Fastest twenty minutes of the week.
Really enjoyed the drive in and the opening music......that was relaxing.
You knocked it out of the ball park with your pizza Kenny, it looked so good. Did you get your drone working again?
We're finally getting some winter here in Western IL.......6-8 inches with 40 mph winds. Snow so wet once it gets on the ground it stays put....no drifting.
Obviously the idiots that leave cruel or nasty comments haven't picked up on what kind of person you and Mandi are. Some people aren't happy unless they're unhappy or trying to ruin other peoples days...............knuckleheads!
Thanks for bringing us along Kenny!...............Rick
I appreciate that, Rick. I want you to thank you for taking the time to check out the video description. I know a lot of channels don't use that area for much of a description, most people don't look there. Thanks for that.
You are entirely welcome Kenny! I'm sure you have had the experiences like me of being called anything and everything................never bothered me until my family got mentioned. Then it's a whole different deal. Who you are and what you do each week is VERY appreciated. @@KennyOfAllTrades
I get to watch your videos with my wife, Mrs H, because she finds your voice very soothing. However she did ask for you to please refrain from using Kraft Cheese on your pizza, and to spend a few dollars more for a locally made cheese…..lol
Your videos are like a little vacation. Thanks so much for letting us tag along. Love the lakes of Northern MN. Any time of year they are so beautiful.
At long last... another Kenny video! The world is at peace again! ❣
Who doesn’t love a Casey’s pizza? Somebody from the south, where they don’t have them…😂
But we have Bills pizza 🍕 and it it’s sooo good 😊😊😊❤❤
@@helenknight6980 ha! I’m not familiar 😄
That’s cause you’re not from the south….😝😝😝😝
I think the candle burning just adds a nice warm ambiance to the camper. I'm sure Mandi came up with that idea 😊 The pizza looked delish! Getting to that camp site took some maneuvering! You obviously knew what you were doing 😊 Happy New Year and stay safe out there!
this channel has such a great vibe! Great videos!
Kenny I enjoy your video's. They have a pizza 🍕 oven you can use. Stay safe. 😊😊😊😊. Watch out for Big foot.😊
“The best thing about goin to bed I getta wake up the next morning and have coffee” . Words when combined in the proper order make such great sense. Amen
time to safely carry extra flashlight batteries in coat pocket - so nothing happens ....
Really enjoy your videos, makes me want to change my channel into a camping channel, maybe. Keep up the great work. Really relaxing and stress free, what I need.
So I was eating dinner with the wife, got "Kenny of All Trades" on in the background. I looked up and saw the fire starter and misread, I thought it said "Fart Fire" at first. Well, that will get 'er (fire) ripping I thought.....lol😂. Then I looked again and realized it said "Fast Fire", ehh.....same difference....haha. On a serious note, we appreciate the videos, they are very calming, and the wife and I both love camping. Thanks Kenny.
Ya need your heat to be a little lower and more even. That thing you have is pretty tall so the heat you need to really melt the cheese and cook from the top goes up further than you need. If you want to do pizza while camping I suggest using the oven or looking into a pizza oven for camping.
That's a good idea. Some of those camping pizzia ovens look pretty cool.
To keep the bottom from burning or sticking I believe you sprinkle some cornmeal or flour a light dusting of either I could be wrong. Thanks for putting up good content
You are a wonderful human straight from God's love such a gentle soul.teaching us about God's wonderful planet he created. With out mentioning his name we as Christians know😢 you are a true believer in God almighty.God bless you🎉
I bet you could call in a Sasquatch or two at night during your walk.
Please don’t walk by yourself in the dark. I’m getting nervous. Nooo, the flashlight went out. Thank God!
"Be nice, be honest, and we'll see you down the road."
Such a wholesome man, love your work Kenny!! 👍
I appreciate that!
Next time try rubbing some of that olive oil on the bottom of your pizza dough. It will come out soft. 👍
Hi Kenny... another awesome video.. would you be so kind as to share where you purchased the tripod &,grill and the tent with the thermometer..it looks awesome..I and others would like to buy...THANKS
The tripod set up came from walmart. It is around twenty-eight dollars and can be found in the camping section. The three piece oven top is called a SCOFF Oven. I'll leave the link.
scoffoutdoorcooking.com/
Put a dusting of cornmeal on pizza stone before putting dough on😊
I wish we had a ton of snow in the Savage, Mn area. I want to go snowmobiling.
What a versatile smoker! That pizza looks great!
best youtube channel!
You got a shout out on Matt Tolbers channel! Love my MN RUclipsRS! They are kind and honest.
That was very nice of him. I watch Matt and Jack as well. I'm realizing we have a number of outdoor content creators here in Minnesota. It just goes to show how many nature lovers we have in the state.
Hey Kenny, where’s the link to contribute to the new drone fund? Also I saw the SiriusXM antenna on the hood of the ol Duramax. I’m curious what channels you listen to. 👍✌️
There is a channel that plays reruns of a television series called the Forensic Files. It's channel 117. I listen to those stories while driving down forest roads.
If I listen to music, I'm usually on the coffee house channel.
Nice new music Kenny. We are gonna try the tripod pizza, looked great. Love the videos, ignore the nut cases out there. We camp thru you and look forward to your content. Thanks and carry on!!
Thanks 👍
You're really brave to go out walking at night alone in that cold! No city lights afar and no starlight if there was snow - very dark!
Nice video. The "new" style intro was great. If you didn't tell us about the audio mishap, we would've never known. Keep up the great work!
A MESSAGE TO KENNY: I SEND YOU THAT COFFEE AND A PRESENT FOR YOUR NEXT ADVENTURES IN THE FUTURE. SENT IT TO YOUR P.O. BOX 461 BRAINERD, MN SHOULD BE IN THE P.O. BOX LOCATION ON SATURDAY, FROM BIGTONY
Awesome! Thanks Big Tony. I appreciate that.
You know Kenny, if you can't find your keys, I guess that you will just have to stay another night! 😉😄🤗
👏 👏 👏 👏 🖒 🖒
Keep Camping!

Ok, you talked me into lighting the candle that has been sitting on my countertop for a long time. :-)
Great video. I usually watch on my other channel. I love smoking my pizzas. I actually do a breakfast pizza you should try. I have a video on it. I like to use ham on mine as well.
Hi kenny!,.. Happy New Year! 🎉. This is another awesome video. You preparing the pizza 🍕 was great. Im eagerly anticipating your next camping recipe. The video was awesome. The flashlight 😂 was the cheery on the milk shake part of the video. Till next time, buddy. Thank you, Dan ❤
I cook pizza on my grill on top of a pizza stone to preserve the crust.
Kenny, I so enjoy your videos! You so enjoy the camping and I do understand why! Keep up the great videos! Stay safe!
Hey Kenny. I'm so sorry to read that you been getting those types of comments from sad people. I was shocked in fact because I didn't expect it as this is such a tight little community we have here. I can understand negative comments at times, but getting personal is crossing the line and then that is unacceptable.
Glad to hear you deleted them, but the personal ones you're probably better just blocking altogether because they don't deserve to watch your great content, or to be among this #KOAT community.
Loving the regular uploads as always. Best wishes to you, Mandi & the girls. Love from Scotland. Johnnie. 🥃 🏴
Edit: Oh, now I'm off for some pizza! 🍕
Hi Kenny! Awesome job on the video. Loved the introduction very classy and beautiful. Pizza looked amazing too I could just taste it!
Love your videos. My daughter hasn’t tried to get the drone yet. She’s been put on bed rest for a bit. Baby is fine but mama needs to relax.
Anyway…take the pizza off the stone to cool. The stone is hot and retains the heat. It continues to cook and that’s why it was hard.
That does make sense! I'll remember that for next time.
Kenny, when you go out walking at night with just a flashlight it freaks me out haha. You couldn’t pay me enough to do that. Especially, as you have had stones thrown at you before.
I watch a lot of paranormal shows, and somehow you walking down a trail in the pitch black freaks me out. 😂😩
The pizza looked really good, pineapple on top would have been good too.
Great video!! :)
Kenny my wife and I look forward to Tuesday nights with you.
My wife said Kenny didn’t show us what he had for breakfast, I bet it was Italian toast! AKA Leftover Pizza.
Well dog gone it..
I remembered that you said you were going to be in the foothills last weekend
But didn't know exactly where to look for you...
It's going to get harder to find camping spots up there as snowmobileing season ramps up...
See you in the funny papers

Im glad you dont let the haters get to you; look at your subscriber numbers....that should tell you how many people love your videos . Just remember....you cant fix stupid.....We fell in love with Minnesota last fall when we visited Duluth last fall and your videos give us great ideas about where to visit next. We cant seem to find a used truck camper; seems like they are all out west....and we're in Ohio..Keep on doing what you do...forget the idiots...
Great getaway camp mate. Greetings from AUS. PS hope you found your keys! 😊
The crisp on that pizza crust is exactly how pizza should be! In my opinion that looked perfect & I wouldn't change anything. It's your pizza stone that protected the bottom from a burn the way it disperses heat & causes the crisp crust. If you like a softer crust 😕 you can use a metal pan, but you risk a burnt crust.
That does make sense. Thanks!
Geez, and I thought camping in the low 40s in Florida was cold! The El Nino has Florida wet and cold this winter, well, cold for me.
Your videos always pass by too quickly. Until next time, brother! Thanks for sharing another weekend with us.
Spent the entire day struggling to get my files off of a busted laptop to my new one. After 6 hours I decided to call it a day and watch your video. What a stress releaver your video has been. It's the prefect ending to the day.
You’re like a bear trying to find the best place to hibernate! LOL. Hello from Florida!
My wife always had candles going in our 5th wheel in spring and fall. Really gives it a more homie feel. Thanks for the video!
Just my second video watching you and really enjoy. Love the MN lakes and woods! I have a getaway place up on Leech Lake and your videos help when I'm not there.
Great video! As an Iowan, I'm a little familiar with Casey's pizza lol. That looked delicious 😋
Thanks for keeping up with the videos and doing what you can to ignore the negativity!
The coldest day today so far this winter here. 44 degrees. I read today about two brothers in NY getting killed while ice fishing. Stay safe!!!
New to the channel, really good content. BTW, we always make our pizza in an iron skillet. 😂
Hello Kenny, I have found the best pizza is let the pizza guys cook it😂 Safe travels 🪵👍🏼🇺🇸
Hi Kenny great looking pizza we make a few a week I get the thin crust from a little local Italian shop & the sauce, we cook it on a pizza stone on the grill at 350 if we are home & we make them on the Skuttle grill with a cover when camping way better & cheaper A large pizza here is like $30 that is crazy. Stay warm & safe my friend see ya next week
Very nice relaxing video. Thank you. Until the next video stay safe.
hey kenny.i see u finaly got a lil bit of winter weather and temps.yes so did i up here.finaly 6 ins if snow and calling for minus 49 wind chill here at mile post 45 on the alcan hiwat.thanks for the video kenny.happy newyears.
Kenny, your candle is great, it reminded me of one of your best traits. You are mindful.
In this crazy world, that is a rare trait.
I am very impressed with your pizza crust making skills! Store bought or not, you rocked it! I loved your rolling pin! I couldn’t tell for sure, but did you use a pizza stone?
I saw a drone is up, did you get another or have a spare laying around? I have been bummed all week, thinking the drone shots might not be a thing for awhile.
So glad to see them, excellent as always.
Thanks for taking us along. See you next week!
Yes, it was a stone from Pampered Chef. My sister lent it to me. A few months back, I had DJI warranty a drone. The replacement came in the mail Thursday. I thought I would be without for a few weeks. The universe worked in my favor this time.
@@KennyOfAllTrades God is good! I am so glad it worked out for you.
I really wanted to know how that scoff bakes, adding a pizza stone looked like it worked well!
Too cold here to try to bake on it, (I know you Minnesotans would be out in your shirt sleeves in this weather/Utah) but as soon as spring hits I am going to try a loaf of bread in it.
Looking forward to next weeks drone footage. Off to talk to my cousin who has a bajillion pampered chef items..maybe she has an extra stone. Wish me luck!
