This is Why I Enjoy Winter Camping in a Truck Camper.

  • This weekend I'm bringing you along into the Savannah State Forest for a weekend camping excursion at Hay Lake Campground.
    This was my first time in this campground. I called the front desk at Savannah Portage State Park and asked if Hay Lake was open. She said that it was closed, however, that only means there are no services available. She said the road in was not plowed and staff doesn't maintain the grounds in the winter. To my Suprise she then said it's OK for me to stay there, as long as I didn't leave any trash and kept the place clean. I was really excited to have an opportunity to explore the empty campground.
    I arrived on Saturday morning. It appeared from the tracks in the snow that I was the second vehicle to drive into the campground this winter. I knew my chances of seeing another person all weekend was slim to none.
    I spent Saturday afternoon walking around the campground. I was impressed by the spacing between campsites. I think this would be an excellent campground for someone who is looking at just getting into camping but frightened of being alone in the woods. During the summer months when the leaves are on the trees there would be enough cover between sites to give a feeling of seclusion. However, you would have safety in numbers with other campers being around. Let me know if you decide to go to this spot. I was in site #4. Later in the day I found steps and a board walk going down to the lake. The sunset over the lake was a magnificent scene, a sight so beautiful it could only be made by the hands of God.
    I'm happy I came across this campground. Since we don't have a lot of snow on the ground, I might continue to look for campgrounds to visit while they are empty.
    This weekend answers the question of "why would anyone want to go camping in the winter". The isolation of an empty campground with a beautiful wintery landscape fills my soul with joy.
    I really appreciate you coming along for this week's adventure. I'll see you again soon.
    Kenny

      Thank you so much. I'm glad the videos have you thinking about going on an adventure. I really hopped my channel would show people we don't have to sell our homes and get rid of our belongings to enjoy the RV/Van Life we see on RUclips. I work 45 hours a week Monday through Friday as a state employee and cherish the alone time in the woods. It's what recharges my mental batteries, making the work week not suck as bad. The more you do it, the easier it gets. I hope you can find the time to get out there.

    Kenny, is your truck your primary transportation, if so do you leave the camper on or take it off when not going camping? I’m seriously thinking about buying a truck camper but my truck is my daily driver. I’m concerned about how much effort it would be to get the camper off and on, I’m 72 years old, but I am in good health and physically fit and work out daily. Clyde

    • @KennyOfAllTrades
      @KennyOfAllTrades  7 месяцев назад +1

      My daily driver is a two thousand four jeep liberty. I got a couple hundred bucks into it. It's dependable enough to get me to work and as a heater and an air conditioner. The camper Stays loaded in the truck all week long while i'm at work.

    • @KennyOfAllTrades
      @KennyOfAllTrades  8 месяцев назад

      That's an awesome warranty! My truck is starting to get a little age on it. It's 10 years old with 200,000 miles. I know I'll have to fix a few things along the way. But I hope to get another 12 to 15 years out of it. As long as I can keep the rust at bay.

    Did you ever notice the use of certain Minnesota words we get backwards? I heard it on the video today, and it made me laugh! When we explain that we want something "UNfrozen, we call it "UNthaw".... which is the opposite of THAW! UNthaw is basically saying "to freeze". It is the opposite of THAW! This drove my dad crazy (he wasn't from MN) when he heard us Minnesotans using this term illogically. It also drove him crazy when he would hear one person tell another that they were going to "Borrow something to" another. No, you "Loan to", and "borrow from". Thanks for bringing me a laugh Kenny! 🤣

    • @KennyOfAllTrades
      @KennyOfAllTrades  8 месяцев назад +12

      Yes! But remember when I went to Germany. It took over 4 months of consistent videos to get my impressions back to where they were before the trip.
      Impressions are how many times RUclips shows the videos to someone.
      So it bummed me out knowing that 2 years of consistently making a video was halted by missing 3 weeks of videos. That's why I try to stay consistent. Each video takes about 50 hours to record, edit, and upload. Plus, the 45 hours at my regular job....so yes, im exhausted often. People think I'm super chill on the videos......im actually just wore out. Lol

      @@KennyOfAllTrades i got one last year on sale thinking maybe it will make things faster n easier. My truck is a dually crew cab. So i mounted it (the module) on inside of my back truck window trim, so i can flip the power on without having to go into the camper, and that’s as middle of my truck n camper as i can get…i spend more time waiting for it to connect standing beside it, to the app on my phone n then instantly disconnect for no bloody reason, meanwhile i pull out the old plastic 1.5 ft level and set it on my back camper landing, n i figure out what needs to be done faster. So my opinion of it with a truck camper is it’s a bit more annoying more time consuming than actually helpful.
      If someone gives u one fine, otherwise I wouldn’t bother wasting the money they aren’t cheap. 🍻

As a fellow Minnesota. I live in brooklyn center. Friday the 2nd, I fly to Fort Worth Texas to pick up my (new) used truck. It is a 2006 chev.5500
    Fifth wheel haller it only has 50600 miles a one owner vehicle. It's clean as a whistle and i'm very excited. I'm selling my Dodge 5.9, which is my preferred motor mainly because it has 2 less cylinders to mess around with. I'm a shade tree diesel mechanic Just like you. Doesn't mean I don't make mistakes but who doesn't. There'll be many upgrades on this duramax. Mainly to make it breathe better intake piping, manifold, exhaust up pipes and my fuel lab filter system from the dodge goes on it.
    I hope to find a camper soon. Used one's seem to sell fast. Any dealers you find beter then most??
    I'll Put On the back of this until I retire. 1-4 years And then get a fifth wheel.
    Thanks Jess Feltl. Master plumber. p.s. I saw you had a pipeline supply safety vest On, yes I'm cyber stalking a bit. I used Hopkins location till it moved. TTFN.

      I wish I could refer you to a decent RV dealer, but I haven't had any experience with them. We had a camping world move into town a few years back. They took over a Ganser Mountain store. They sold an amazing number of campers the last 3 to 4 years...
      But they closed the doors a few months back without notice. I feel bad for all the people who bought a new camper with a warranty only to see the dealership parking lot empty the next month.
      I know a few guys that run the 5500 for their auto recycling business. They love their trucks. I think you have an awesome setup.

    Kenny you brought back some good memories for me. When I was a Kid and stayed at Grandma Koch's house in the Summer when the Fire Dept. sounded the Noon siren it was time to head in for lunch. Grandma would either have a big fried chicken, roast beef or steak meal on the table. Then for supper it was usually just a sandwich or something simple along with either home made cake or pie. If not cake or pie it would be ice cream with Oreo's. Oreo's were a staple at Grandma's house unless she had baked Molasses, Lemon or Oatmeal/Raisin Cookies.

    Yes sir, I'm 600 mile south of you, and it hit 60 degrees F here the last couple days. I'll take it, after several mornings of 12 below zero.

    Tick Safety extremely important. More so than just Lyme. I was diagnosed with Alpha Gal Syndrome this fall. Caused by a tick. So sadly I can no longer enjoy any of these scrumptious beef or pork food items you so very well prepare. Nice looking vault for winter, considering crew is probably light (husband works for national park service and used to be on custodial crew back in the day before switching to utilities, very familiar with ins and outs of vaults. Thank you for closing the toilet lid!!). Awesome video as always!

    Hey Kenny. I stayed in that campground in August of '21. It wasn't very busy but it was also a Sunday! I only stayed one night because we couldn't have a fire. (Banned due to extreme drought.) Also, I wanted to go someplace with a view of the sky and this campground is all trees. Full canopy overhead. Nice if you like shade though. Your story about the big farm dinner made me chuckle. My brother and I helped a family during haying one day when we were teenagers. We saw that table and our jaws dropped. We still tell that story to our kids and they look at us with skepticism!

    Thanks for another great episode. Hopefully the check engine light isn't too bad.

    Really nicely done video with editing and music. Very relaxing music and scenery. I appreciate your effort! We have a TC also and I learn from what you do, where you go and how you camp. Love to see your recipe successes and fails. You keep it real. Thank you!

    I hear u on those reservations. I’m in Ohio and I spent a half hr online and 3 phone calls to make a February reservation. The guy I spoke to did not speak good English and thanked me for booking a Florida campsite. I asked him, what did you just say ? He laughed and said oh I mean Ohio. We do a lot. I did however receive an email confirmation and verified I did in fact call the state phone number. It’s just a shame the way things have become.

    Last GM I bought new 1997 by 1999 its had 38,000 miles. Cost me 3,900 to get out of the dealership. I was so mad I drove it down to the Ford dealer traded it off on a new 3/4 ton. Drove that for 18 yrs. Regular maintenance and never a problem. New ford's were ridiculous in price. So I bought a new dodge its got 67,000 miles loaded down and pulling the camper. Same thing Regular maintenance and so far its still a strong pickup that's had no issues.

    My friend and I camped here last summer. It was mid-week, but perfect weather and we were shocked to be the only ones there. I'm pretty sure that locked outhouse was locked then too - probably an old one out of service. The next night of our summer road trip was at Itasca (still mid-week) and of course the polar opposite as far as crowds - every campsite full and bus loads of people to see the Headwaters. I can't wait to return to return to this campground and after seeing this beautiful video, I want to sooner rather than later! Thanks!

    • @KennyOfAllTrades
      @KennyOfAllTrades  8 месяцев назад

      It's cool to hear this campground was empty. I went to Itasca last winter, or maybe it was 2 winter ago...time flys with working and making videos on the weekends. The campground was empty, probably because it was -22 degrees... but I was surprised to see people walking in the park. Some places always seem to be occupied.
