As I wrote the comment below on an iPad, I couldn't see the video, only hear it. But every time I heard a sample that really caught my ear, I scrolled up, and every time it was the OR80.
Cool, my fav too
I agree. Have a Rockerverb but the reason I Swithed from Marshall to Orange was a Orange OD80 from 76
This is a great amp test.. Editing the video with the amps back to back like that is very useful...Thank you!
Thanks! Glad to hear it.
You are living the fantasy of so many guitar players. the access you have to great gear is staggering! oh the vicarious thrills! these amps sound great
Thanks :-)
Man you make some of the best amp videos on RUclips in my opinion
Watching them are a pleasure with headphones on
That OR80 is magic. AD30 also sounded really good.
0:15 Rockerverb 50 Mk II
0:25 TH30 Twin Ch
0:35 Dual Terror
0:44 Tiny Terror
0:55 Ad30 Twin Ch
1:04 OR80
Loving the Tiny Terror! Thx for the comparison, awesome as always
Great shootout. Orange amps are awesome! I have the OR15 myself.
Thanks! The OR15 is a great amp
I love hearing your Hendrix tones on a vintage Strat. My favorite is the Ad30 but they all sound really nice, Johan.
Great video! Definitely getting the TH30 now.
Tord Næss me too
The way you play is perfect for this comparison.
I use the Orange Bass Terror 500W...What a monster...and I use it for everything-blues, rock, folk, country, metal...sadly it's been discontinued. I love your channel. Cheers.
+ferox965 Great to hear that! Cheers Johan
Great job Johan. Keep 'em coming!
Thanks Tuomas! I will :-)
Love it like always! Thank you again for all your efforts and meticulousness.
The differences between the amps are not too big and they get even lesser from amp to amp to amp in this comparison.
The vintage one does the job in every scenario! Most power but enough bite and well rounded!
+juppheidi Thanks! Glad to hear that. Cheers Johan
Your the best .
Mate! You never claim anything and that's great. As a guitarist and an amp builder I always love your uploads. Keep it up brother, you rock, !!
I have the Crush 20 as a practice amp and love the tone considering it's an 8. But listening to the vintage amps you can really hear the reason Orange became so famous, it's that rich dark tone. Just beautiful. The newer amps all sound amazing as well, but there's that old classic sound that I love. Your amazing playing and soft touch really shine through on these amps!! :)
+Satchmo Dog Thanks, that's so nice to hear! Cheers Johan
You would shit if you heard your orange cr20 into vintage green backs 😅 it is amazing !
Once again Johan, another great video. I have an Orange TH-30 and love it.
+Lee Syrjanen Thanks Lee, that's a good choice
sweet .. finally all the orange amp demo
+rangga aditya Thanks :-)
Well, this video just made me spend $1500 on a new th30 head..picking it up next week, can't wait to plug it in!!!
+Gary Michaud Congrats to a great amp! :-)
Me 2!!! And I love it!!!🙏
I’m surprised there’s no love for the rockerverb in the comments, that was my fave by a long shot!
Forget the amps those guitars sound incredible! Your playing suits the demos incredibly well too!
In my order, I like the AD30 best overall but I also love the rockerverb and the or80. I have myself an Jim root terror.
Thanks! The AD is the only one with EL84 preamp tubes, so it's a bit more Vox like. Great amp
+Johan Segeborn, I'm going to start saving for one. Great comparisons Johan. I dont just watch for the information but I also listen for the amazing tones you create.
Thanks! You make my day :-D
Just love your channel mate.
Hi Johan, thanks for the excellent video man. I've just subscribed, and look forward to seeing what else you've been up to!
As for the amps, the reason I found you is that I'm researching the AD30 right now and was pleased to see that it (and the Rockerverb) were the stand outs in this video. The '76 is cool as well, but I'm not chasing one of those.
+superflea72 Thanks! Yeah the AD30 is great and it sounds amazing with the onboard V30 speakers as well! Cheers Johan
I'd really like to see more of these "how to get classic tones with modern and off the shelf gear", like the fender deluxe shootout or this, although the speakers here isn't off the shelf exactly :P keep up the good work!
Thanks, that's a good description. I may borrow it!
Yess, great video thank :-)
I fall in love OR80 1976…
+Eric Langlois Thankls Eric, I did too :-) Cheers
Johann, this video raised my interest for the vintage Orange amps (first well miked clip of non-doom-metal-riffs with this style of amp! :D ), one came up for a good deal and now i am a happy mid 70's OR120 owner. I am a big fan of the Marshall JTM 45/100 and i was quite shocked, how close this amp can be set up to that Marshall model - mindblowing. And besides that, this is the single most versatile amp i've ever played - extremely clever and effective controls - you can simulate a Marshall/BF Fender/VOX tone quite easily with it. Hiwatt would be a very distinctive tone that this thing can't approach, but anything with reasonable amount of compression is doable.
+VintageCharlie Thanks Charlie, glad to hear it. Yeah that EQ is so effective
I have watched a lot of your videos the last couple of days ...You are a great player,,love your rock style...You have played some of the nicest marshalls I have ever heard..Lucky man..
+Daveyboy Thanks, I'm really glad you like it. Cheers
Very nice comparison!! I own a Dual Terror with Maxon OD-808 in front. Love it, very versatile, lightweight, loud and affordable!
+Maxxlenoxx Thanks! Yeah it's a great sounding and practical amp
Followed your link for this. It's incredible really how Orange have managed to nail that vintage 'British' tone with all of these amps. They all essentially sound virtually identical tone-wise, the only real difference is the volume. Great comparison man!
Thanks, yeah they all have the tone
The two Terror are impressive compared with the more $$$ other ones... the OR80 is something else...
Great shootout! I liked them all but Terror must be a really good buy considering the price, it sounds very good. Your videos are the best, thank you.
Thanks! :-)
All sounds good, love them all.
+Dan Noc Thanks Dan, I'm glad to hear that! :-)
Gr8 comparison Johan. They all sound ‘orange’ and great but yeah that 70s sounds fuller and sweeter. You dial those amps in that classic style where so many shades are available just by altering your picking intensity!
That was great, the TH30 sounds amazing. Thinking of buying one.
+Mox_au Thanks, I liked it too
That riff that starts around 2:40! Fantastic little ditty!
The OR80 felt rather dark, but it has real character still.
Great video, as always!
I've owned a Rocker 30, Dual Terror, Micro Terror and currently own an OR15.
I think an OR50 or OR80 will be the next conquest 🤔
Great video! There is this relatively new Orange amp called custom shop 50. I heard that it does an incredible old shoot crunch, that is much more convinsing than some other reisseus. It would be great if you could review it and maybe compare it to your OR80 to see if the rumors are true.
The TH30 is definitely the most modern sounding. Not nearly as forward sounding as the other amps. I guess that would suit it slightly better as a rhythm amp.
I personally prefer either the AD30 or the OR80. The OR is definitely a lot warmer sounding. Great demo, Johan! :)
Thanks Marten!
Great comparison Demo - An Orange Crush Pro 120 would been interesting too . !
+motorrebell Thanks, I'll keep that in mind. Cheers Johan
GREAT demo! They all had their points, but for me, I preferred the Rocker.
That OR80 is Awesome! I have an OR 15, and a Tiny Terror. I have to admit I just got them because I got them both for so cheap I felt like I was stealing, but hey, I paid their asking price. I had a Rockerverb mk1, and just didn't bond with it. The clean channel just wouldn't cut it for me. I love the OR 15 though! I think it's one of the best bargains for a crunchy amp you can find. I got mine for $300 in mint condition, which I know isn't normal, but I see them used in good condition. for $4-450 all the time. It's much more useful than the terror because of the 3 band EQ, but the terror is a fun amp, just don't expect to get clean tones above bedroom volume! Thanks for all your videos. I just discovered a few days ago, and I'm going back watching them all. The Plexi vids blew my mind!
+Brad Carroll Thanks Brad! Glad you like em!
The 1976 OR80 stole the show.
Dude that last lick was the sh-t !!! Wow !!! If you made that up, you got it going on !!!
Keep it up. Enjoyed it very much.
Great video as always !!
You should try the OR15 too, one of the best low watt amp, better than the tiny (more vintage) and with some tubes variations you can have all kind of great sound (12ay7 in V1 and 5781 in V2)
Thanks, yeah the the OR15 is great
comming back to this awesome video something I love about orange maybe it's that Vox sound that everyone says is doubled in a orange any way magical sound....
+Brandon Hupp Thanks Bro, yeah it's hard to put the finger on what the Orange sound actually is, but it's unique and it's great! Cheers Johan
Tiny Terror = fantastic value ! Plenty loud too ! Thanks Johan ! : )
Yeah, impressive piece of gear
Johan everyone who watches your demo's thinks you are the luckiest man alive! And everyone who picks up a guitar say THANKS!!! Keep'm coming Johan! Also thanks for bringing out the mocha strat :)
The Vintage Orange seemed more forward, warmer and slightly more mid focused. A little less of that on the other amps, most notable on the rockerverb. And everyone's ears are slightly different.
Thanks Jim! Glad to hear that. And yeah the OR80 had a mid cut that wasnt present in the others
Lucky man J! Good taste as well!
Thanks :-)
Nice comparison. The TH30 sounded good. I own the OR80 and can get all the sounds with the master gain I installed. I also have original British tubes. If I were to buy a new Orange it would be the TH30.
Hi Johan, They all sounded good however the 76 OR80 sounded best and the dual Terror sounded good also. Great video!
Very interesting. I thought all of the amps sounded more suited to the Strat. And I'm a Les Paul player. Another great video Johan - keep them coming!
Thanks! Great to hear that. Cheers!
I own a th30 and dont care for dirty with my strat but love it for my les paul. I too was impressed with his strat sounds gonna have to get in there and twist some knobs.
i've owned both a rockerverb and a TH100. Both are great amps, but TH100 is my favorite (a bit cheaper too). you can sweeten up your tone by running an EH Parametric EQ thru your effects loop.
Each amp with the exception of the Dual Terror did something I liked.
This certainly puts the Terrors in good light. Very impressive.
The OR is fantastic sounding, but I also really like the Tiny Terror! It's a great modern made amp with a killer tone and can be had cheap! Play a klon into that tiny terror, you'll be surprised. Thanks for the videos Johan!
Thanks Sonny!
Hi Johan 1976 Orange OR80 is juice of the day ! Sounded like someone pulled out the cotton wool in my ears compared to amps of today. A bit more hum but the sound on either single or hum bucker is just a killer.
IMO Tiny was harsh and scratchy the Dual had both high's and lows great mixture and the flavour I liked. The AD seemed a little more compressed and more in the higher mids while the TH30 sounded the darkest and possibly my Joyce. The rockerverb sounded flat sort of transistor hi fi compared to the others. It would of cause be different live. thank you for investing your time with the demo's i keep coming back to watch them.
I own a th30 and I love it, but in this video I thought the tiny terror sounded the best!
Thank you Johan for the shootout. I own all of these except for the Dual-Terror. And all the custom-shop model. Custom-shops are in a different class. Of these I like RVerb a lot, especially v3. I like a TH30 combo more then the 50W head (or 100W) head. I have 2 iterations of the AD30 and the later version is better for some reason, but its a Clean Vox/Selmer type of thing. Not very versatile. Of the Terrors I like the HW Tiny Terror for cleaner tone and the Jim Root. OR80 is a different beast and like in this vid it breaks up earlier, making it good for edge-of-breakup or classic rock, not clean or heavy. The video doesnt do it justice as it is a very punchy amp (as a custom-shops, Rocker-verbs and the the bigger TH)Maybe its because of the speakers used
great comparison. i prefer the tone of the OR80 by far. would be interesting to hear the modern or50 reissue against the vintage or80. thanks for the demo!
+VintageCharlie Thanks man! I'm gonna track an OR50 down! Cheers
OR80 for me. I like the video you made that compared the OR80 to the Marshall plexi too.
Very Good! More similar than different, and in this case, that is a good thing. Right now I'm using a 1x12 Tiny Terror combo, and I don't think there's a rock guitar tone that isn't in that thing! More clean headroom would be nice, but I knew what I was getting when I bought a 15 watt amp.
Thanks! The Tiny Terror is one of the greatest value amps I know
You really should try the RV mkiii, totally different and awsome voice, I would love to hear you rock that beauty
Coming back and listening to this again and other than the OR80 sounding the best to me the Tiny Terror was my fav and then the AD30.
I can't freaking believe how good those th30's sound...I used to overlook them because they didn't cost alot....alot of the clips I've heard have me damn close to pulling the trigger on one...I play everything from 80's John Sykes stuff to modern metal...the th30 seems to cover all that w/out pedals
I had one. It was the best all around amp I ever had and it did Fender cleans/blues tones better than Fender. The clean channel was a real wonder on that amp.
I love them all!!!❤️🤘
Another KILLER as always. You NEVER disappoint! Where do you feel the (now discontinued) Rocker 30 Head fits in?
i really love your channel, and i love orange amps.
This vid is very helpful. I own a th30 and consider to buy a ad30 or rockerverb.
Or maybe orange cs50 ...
+z3python Thanks! I havent played the CS50, does it compare to the OR80?
+Johan Segeborn
only heard it on RUclips, there is one from andertons comparing it with a new or100 . Sounds very nice in the vid but nice enough for 2.300 € i don't know ;-)
The OR80 was definitely my favorite. Nice Les Paul!
+Sonic Titan Thanks! :-)
Definitely all from the same family. The vintage and the TH30 Twin seem to have the most body. That being said, I feel like I'd be very happy with the Tiny Terror. THANKS JOHAN!!
Thanks Nick, yeah the Tiny Terror is definetly an alternative to the OR
Johan, there is also the Orange custom shop 50 which is acclaimed by critics and praise by magazines about its very convinsing 70's crunch. They say it is one the best amps out there in doing a 70's impression. I would love if you could review this amp and compare it to your OR80 and maybe the the rest of the modern oranges in order to see if it sounds truly vintage (according to the rumours) or it is more modern sounding.
Obviously the OR80 has the absolute killer tone out of the lot, but apart from that the th30 takes the cake for me
+Lasse G-meistorn Thanks Lasse!
Sorry didn't see your reply!
I just wanted to say that I thought this was a great demo!
I totally agree.
Wow, pretty amazing. Dual Terror and a 4x12 is all I'd ever need.
+ArielsSmartyPants Thanks, yeah it certainly does the trick!
ArielsSmartyPants for me its the th 30
awesome video... Are you using any pedals with the OR80? Has it been modded with a master volume and what were the levels at? I am considering buying a1974 OR120. My concerns is that i wont get that awesome tone/sound/crunch unless the volume/gain is very high. I plan on playing some smaller bar gigs and don't want to blast the audience with too much volume but i still want that sweet classic orange crunch. I could always mod it with a master volume but I don't know what that'll do to the value. Could you please provide some thoughts?
thanks!
Johan, I've got a chance to get an AD30 head for a bargain price, would you recommend it for classic rock / grunge? It sounded the least gainy of the amps in the shootout
Th30 has a squishiness to it i absolutely adore, the clean channel is magical!!!
I always find that Orange amps sound good alone, but with the band they seem to have a strange brightness or some harsh frequencies over the top of the tone that I can't get rid of. As a Marshall guy, I'm trying to like Orange, but I find myself trying to make my Oranges sound like my Marshalls, and they just can't capture the same tone and feel. Strange thing is I only notice this when I play them myself, not when watching/listening to others. I'd like to get my hands on a vintage Orange, because I have a similar feeling about modern Marshalls as well.. The OR80 sounded interesting! AD30 my favorite. Great video as always!
Cheers!
Thanks! I agree it sounds and feels harsher than the recorded result.
+Human Steve true. Orange and modern Marshall have this annoying highs. BTW If you guys are serious to dig tis type of sound dig Wizzard amps
Damn I was really surprised how well the dual and tiny terror hung in their with there bigger brothers.
I bought the Dual Terror a couple of weeks ago. Fantastic unit
Really nice demo and playing. One of the most useful demos out there. You used no attenuator? :-o
still dont understand how a million guitarists are not curious about all these experiments and tones of super high end gear and your grooviness. itll get there
At this level of distortion, the character starts to show through. The Rockerverb and TH, with pre-phase-inverter master volumes and negative feedback in their power sections, can at times have Marshall-like clarity. The OR, AD, and Terrors have post-phase-inverter master volumes and don't seem to have negative feedback, and are thicker in their mids. I could be misunderstanding the schematics, though.
it is like a great big pile of tangerine's innit hahahahaha no seriously thank you for all the hard work time and trouble for doing this and making our amp choosing life so much easier than it could be !!
OR80 Sounds amazing! I kind of felt that they went in ascending order of how good they sounded with the Rockerverb sounding the worst and the OR80 sounding the best, although the TH30 had some nice clean and in-between sounds.
Thanks, I like it best too
+Johan Segeborn i want to Upgrade from a Tiny Terror to a TH30. Do you think it worths the investiment? it looks like the clean channel is as great as the crunch
I use a Dual Terror. That 76 OR80 sounds the best to me out of all of them.
+MrLespaul2000 Thanks, both great amps
The vintage OR80 sounded amazing but the big surprise for me was the Tiny Terror. It punches well above its weight.
+Awesome2ThePowerOfSick It does indeed! :-)
+Awesome2ThePowerOfSick I was thinking that for the price difference of these amps, it was surprising to hear that the Tiny Terror could hold its own with the amps that cost 2 to 3 times (perhaps 4 times) as much.
You seem to make everything sound like a plexi (: kudos
AD-30 é meu favorito! Timbre cremoso e grave... A gibson les paul + a Tube screamer + AD-30 = don't need nothing else!
Hi. Nice comparison. What channel was dual terror and what was the wattage settings?
The best kept secret in the guitar amp world - the main timbral and sound character differences lie in cabinets used, not so much in the amp model/schematic.
+Miss Tress So true :-)
Johan what are your top 3 favorites here? Do you like the feel of the rectifier in the ad30? There seems to be something magic in that amp from your recording. Great stuff. Thanks.
+Billy Ards Thanks man, I actually like all amps for different things here. Cheers
The first 55 seconds says it all. You can get that Orange tone out of any of them. I personally love the Tiny Terror. You can get a used one for $350 and it’ll never let you down. Mine had a entire beer poured into it during a show. My roommate, an amp tech, poured the beer out of it and 30 minutes later had it back up and running. They’re built tough.
The power of the TT is it’s simplicity. Onstage you can drastically become a different guitar player in 5 seconds. The more knobs you have the less you’ll touch it onstage.
I use to run through two TTs set at slightly different tones. One cleaner and fatter and the other more aggressive. Sounded great.
I owned the dual terror and it was great only for the extra 15 watts. The second channel on the thing wasn’t my bag.
The AD30 is incredible but too expensive for my taste. It’s also slightly darker and rounder. Didn’t justify the extra money. Also, too loud to play in your apartment.
can i ask what genre you play?
BTW Johan, what do you think about your Custom without maple top? Did you compare it with Custom with maple top? If so what the difference do you think? I'd like to buy Custom to my R7 Refin and R7 Junior in the future but I'm so impressed with your R7 Custom even when it was with Burstbuckers that I'm not sure what Custom I want.
It's very much up to the individual guitar. Maple top Vs Mahogany top is important for the acoustical sound of the guitar. It's almost neglible to the plugged in sound though I'm afraid. Primarily the neck and the fretboard determines the sound. My Custom was selected by a prominent Guitar player among hundreds of guitars. You know if you tap the wood that will be turned into a neck, different frequencies will resonate att different locations of the neck. Then you want the resonances of the neck not to interfer with each frettted note of the string along the fretboard, but you want the resonances of the neck to expand your tone. So for each given location of the neck you want resonant frequencies that are close to that of the corresponding frettted note but not exactly the same. So, pick the one that plays the best. Cheers Johan
Härlig video. Har du testat or15? Isf, vad tycks?
Hope you get your hands on newer oranges, maybe the custom shops too
The Rockverb with the Gibson! Holy wacamole!!!!!
+Thiago Salomão Thanks Thiago!
The Rockerverb is definitely the winner for me.OR80 is awesome too!
+Ace Thanks!
Why do I always think the old amps have that little extra dimension that makes them a bit better? Do they actually, or do I just want to believe they do? Whatever, the OR80 sounded best to me.
+Steve Folkes Hi Steve, I agree. It's probably mostly about the transformers but also the sag of the imperfect old components that is difficult to reproduce today. Cheers Johan
I've been touring a 71 OR80 now for about 8 years. The sag is the very reason I won't put it out of its misery :)
The glory starts at 4:59. With both guitars, but especially the Strat, the old amp from the '70s had a three-dimensional depth that the newer amps simply couldn't match; the auditory equivalent of stereoscopic vision. Head and shoulders above the rest. It's like the difference between seeing a movie on a two-dimensional screen vs. seeing a play in a theater in three dimensions. I like to call it a "chewy" quality, because you can only kiss a TV screen, but you can put a piece of steak in your mouth and really enjoy it!
Of the modern amps, I preferred the Rockerverb, but the Tiny Terror was impressive for its diminutive size.
This OR80 sound great!
+ChazzMetal Thanks! It does indeed :-)
Yup, while all sound great, that one had a special feel to it for most of the tunes.
ChazzMetal Many of us wanted you to try the Marshall code 50!We patiently await!
I Assume You meant Juhan...
By the way, the Code 50 (and the 25 as well!) sound great and is very user friendly!
It sure is!I would prefer one of those 3 thousand dollar heads and 4×12 cabs but it gives a pretty good illusion of having them!
Kul Johan! Helgen är aldrig fullbordad utan dina nya videos. Jag köpte i veckan en Orange OR15h-top. Kan du inte göra något kul med en sådan någon gång? Tex vs. DSL15h och liknande?
Tjena! Kul att höra. :-) det klippet kommer snart hoppas jag. Trevlig helg Johan
The Rockerverb 50 sounds awesome. The rest... something missing, they sound flat and muddy in comparison. Would be great if you could throw the Rockerverb into one of your Marshall shootouts to see how it sounds against Plexi's, JMP's, JCM's!
