    Lol! Canadian trucker here, not sure the laws in this state, but, two things... if he put his tandems back where they belong (41 foot mark, that's a 390.00 ticket here in Ontario) he would put more weight on his drives..and, forget about DOT's 4mm minimum tread depth, if you run in states that get weather like this, you need tires with tread, 4mm is insane! Try it, put new rubber on your rig , and you will see.
    Be safe, and God bless!👍🏻

    • @kevinthetruckdriver353
      @kevinthetruckdriver353 5 лет назад +1

      Two times I had to move my tantems away from the shipper since their shipping yard was snow covered. One time under a bridge (just started to snow - no snow there) & the other time on the interstate since it was plowed. Trlr would just slide.

    21 Years ago I drove for US Xpress and back in those days they couldn't care less if you chained up or not, in fact, they issued me tire cables that I didn't even know what they looked like because I never got them out of the bag. Anytime there was a chain requirement I would just pull over and go to sleep. 2 years later got hired by an LTL produce hauler who gave me $300.00 to spend on high quality winter gear and we spent a good part of a sunny, dry and warm Saturday morning chaining up/chaining off Cali Max style until I got it down to 35 minutes time. 17 years later I'm still grateful to that old fart for everything he taught me about winter driving...

    Something that has served me well over the years... if I knew I would be riding into ugly weather, deep snow, I would deliberately slide my bogie back to put more weight on the drives. I would make a note of where the bogies needed to be (to be legal), and slide them back while I would be travelling through the areas of poor traction or heavy accumulations of snow. I've never in 29 years been weighed on a scale at a coop in really bad weather. If I drive out of the slop back into dry weather, I stop at a safe place and slide the bogie back up where it was to be legal again. Even if the coops are open and the idiots are weighing trucks in bad weather, there's a tolerance for ice and snow buildup.

    • @fauj7860

      I used to do that all the time but stopped after a friend of mine got a ticket in canada for doing the same, these officers at scales should be a little more considerate especially in bad weathers

      My policy and practice is if chains are required it's time to retire. Go to bed that is. Or watch TV. Or eat dinner. Possibly all. I ain't dealing with all the dummies making a very bad situation much worse. Gets that bad, I get comfy. This is what big screen TV's in sleepers is all about. I ride around in a mobile mini-apartment, so why take unnecessary risks. I've got everything I need. Besides, its weather, It changes. Death never does that. Furthermore, putting on chains is a major pain in the ass, one I don't really get paid to do. I ain't rollin', so I ain't getting paid. And, I sure as hell ain't rolling when I'm under some truck, crawling around in snow up to my ass, wresting heavy-ass, frozen, filthy chains. Fuck that shit. Might as well just chill.

    This is a holiday situation compared to Scandinavia, especially north of the polar circle. You have to have chains for every single axle, and ice chains for the driving axles in Norway. Not to forget an extra chain, if one is broken.
    Scandinavian trucks have a higher weight limit than 80,000 lbs. Norway 110,000 lbs, Sweden 141,000 lbs, Finland 163,000 lbs.
    And the Norwegian roads can be a nightmare: only 1 or 1 1/2 lane wide, 10+ gradient, 180 degree hairpins. Several weeks no daylight, Hungry reindeers running across the winter roads, blizzards, 2 meters snow in only one day. No, there is no need for such poorly trained drivers

    Why would someone have a big beautiful sleeper rig but not have the functional stuff like diff locks....yes diff locks would transfer power equally to both rear axles. I would not drive OTR without them the IWX driver has them the white tractor did not or the driver didn't lock them in but either way the issues with road trucks is companies will buy them without the important things such as diff locks to save a few bucks and hope the drivers skill overcomes the conditions.....

    One thing I learned about winter driving, is, if it is just snowing and not blowing, you can at least see the road. If it is just blowing and not snowing, it can blow as hard as it wants to, and you can still see the road, but if it blows and snows, that is a blizzard.

    Nothing beats chaining up but for times like this guy is having were you just need to get around the lot. I keep 2 quarts of tire/track prep that I use for racing.You just pour it on the tires and can light it up or let it evap and it'll give you enough bite to get moving.

  • @garman1966

    This guy needs to back up about 20 feet each time making a packed and level track, so that when he goes forwards he has enough momentum to continue on. It's painful to watch this guy back up 3 feet and try again, just making more ice. Basic snow driving.

    can't understand why the truck stop doesn't keep up with the plowing of the parking areas you'd think the company doing the plowing would have the plowing equipment there and keep that person there plowing throughout the night meeting the lanes open in case an ambulance or fire truck had to get to one of the parked trucks.

    • @stanpatterson5033
      @stanpatterson5033 7 лет назад

      Not everybody carries chains. You only need to carry chains by law if you run into a chain-up district. Those who do not (ever) go to those areas won't carry chains because of the cost of the chains, and the added weight of a full set. Sure, you can voluntarily carry a few sets just for situations like this, but every set takes up storage space and adds a bit of weight to the overall tare weight. If your company won't buy them, you can buy them yourself I guess. I have a square spade shovel and it has helped my ass out of a few jams over the years.

    This driver was able to back up, he caused himself more trouble by not stoping and thinking about his situation. These types of situations cause stress and panic and it becomes difficult to get a way out till you calm down. Any real driver knows what I mean. It’s easy to make comments and hate on people when your just watching from a far. God bless and be safe drivers!

    WTF?! None of those 3 had chains?! JFK, if Im driving in the winter "up north" (where it can, and will snow) i have at least a pair of chains... Yes, they're PITA to handle and setup, however in a situation like this could/will save your ass and rig... Nothing is more fun than polishing and pressing snow into ice with your tires.

    17:38 an 18 and a half minute video where not a word was spoken until the last 60 Seconds. Where nothing happened, where there was no beginning, no middle and no end. And I, I, like a fool, I watched all of it, engaging in the vein Act of Hope. Or willing, masochistic prisoner of a sadistic trucker was this cell phone camera and internet access. Cherishing every second of pain that this video brought me, revelling in the minutes of life that I would never get back.

    yet another reason why tandems are pointless unless you roll with a min load of 30 tons 24/7 ... my truck wouldnt even notice this situation .... just lift the third axle on the tractor and away you go ... we tested tandem drive trucks in the norwegian mountains and a simple 6x2 with the midddle as the drive axle worked best ... you might think that more wheels pulling is better but in this case the problem is that you dont get enough pressure on your drive wheels which means less traction ... driven 15 years in norway hauling fish over the mountains but thanks to my laziness ive chained up maybe 10 times :D

    May not help much but everybody I drove for bought two drives rather than a dummy axle, that and after the first three tries it time to just get out and throw some chains (and I loathe chaining up)

    Think that the parking lot needed plowing!? I know everyone was trying to get off the highway. When you can't move in a parking lot; it is surely fucked-up!
