*I test drove 2020 model and loved it. Bought a 2021 MY and have no regrets but the Audi is a real contender. Range will increase and it’s a true German luxury car.*
I owned the precursor to this, the A3 Etron Fastback. A plug in hybrid. I’ve got to tell you that it was an amazing car. Naturally it was heavier than the standard car but boy did it go. Audi make some excellent cars that’s for sure! Great review!
I've been sort of bingeing your channel for the past few days and really enjoying your reviews. You're the only reviewer I've ever seen use a durometer on interior surfaces. Australia seems a lovely country to go out and take a nice drive through. :) (Also, I'm a bit envious that you're in the middle of summer right now!)
Looks so much better than the model X, which is what everything is invariably compared against in this segment. Can’t believe how much they charge for paint though! I still prefer physical buttons for climate though, much simpler to adjust temperatures
Nice and informative review as always. I am curious to know that if i drive this car in ‘DYNAMIC’ mode or at maximum speed of say around 180km/hr will the total range still remain the same or is the claimed range is achievable by staying within a given speed? It would be interesting to understand that relation of range vs speed.
You forgot how quickly it can charge, the 50 charges to 80% at 120KW the 55 does the same at 150KW and only then (at 80%) they ramp down, but still charge at 50kw at 95%
I think it’s a really really good EV. Of course it’s expensive but what else can you expect. Like the fact that it looks just like a normal car. And it is the best selling car in Norway, so must be decent
Paul, at 3:10 in the video, I was confused when you were pointing to the AC/DC charging on one side vs AC only on the other, it looked like you were pointing to the top port as you said DC charging, but on the other side, the port that looked exactly the same, you described as AC charging?
How many longer journeys does the average driver actually do where the range will be a factor? On the few occasions when you would do a longer journey you can easily plan your route to take advantage of the 150kw chargers and the e-trons fantastic charge rate to recharge to full in about 20 to 30 min.
I really struggle to find an electric car relevant to my needs, if it has a short range,as this one does. I'd have no problem with the likes of Ioniq5, Teslta Y, given they both have ranges near 500km. This Audi has some nice features like the charging ports on either side of the vehicle, but there, the attraction ends. When you were in the car, Paul, I couldn't help but watch the centre armrest/cubby cover which showed some strange contours and fit issues of the vinyl. Perhaps I'm too demanding, but I expect, in a car that's $140k plus mandatory options, that things fit as well as a car costing a third of that. And $2300 is excessive for paint, although Tesla gouges similarly, and I would suggest that other companies (like, say, Ferrari) dig into you even more deeply.
I test drove it: that suspension is a dream. It has great comfort, however it lacks some physical buttons on the dashboard which seems to be corrected on the new eTron GT and eTron Q4. The range is bad but it would work for me since I drive 100 miles a week.
@@ianthomas7863 Being a Boomer, l won't say what l would like to say. If you haven't noticed that every screen (TV, monitor, computer, smart phone, car display, etc) is in inches, then? Been waiting for this one since I spotted you out in it that day :) As always a quality review - bit of a mixed bag though the car itself, as it presents really nicely (and not deliberately obtuse "oh look at me I'm an EV and I MUST be weird and edgy") but the pricetag and range are a big compromise. Will be very curious how this generation ages and depreciates over time.
It makes sense to me in terms of where they are aiming it. If you can afford the price, the chances are you would fly any long distance. So basically you can drive 1hr from your house and back. That would cover most trips for most people. In terms of advantages, you get: simplified reliable drivetrain, quiet operation, and no longer need to waste time refueling. And of course all the usual luxury. Plus you can brag you are saving the environment. If you do occasionally do longer trips or off-road then, again, chances are you can afford a second or third vehicle for this purpose. So I totally get it. But that's not me.
@CarExpert To Paul one more thing , it's about you are very soft and polite which makes you very friendly and gentle to the audience that's all my friend stay smiling stay fantastic 👍
Well, it's pretty good for an EV in build quality ( Looking at you Tesla) a nice presented interior but the performance compared to Teslas are ... ok, I guess My cousin has one who is in the US and he loves doing drag races... He was competing against a Lexus LC500 and .... it lost. What do think about that, Paul? A real shame, considering that the reason people buy EV is for their instant acceleration ( and the LC is a RWD car, mind you, and the Audi was AWD..)
I dont think the reason people buy EVs is for instant acceleration. Not everyone is interested in going fast. idk why so many people are obsessed with drag racing and 0-100 times.
@@Tomoyo0827 Australia should invest in hydrogen vehicles. Takes less time to fill up. Hyundai is starting to roll out it’s first hydrogen vehicle in Australia and I think the first station will be in Canberra.
Audi should have waited until they had a dedicated EV platform and not just try and play catch-up with other manufacturers. Reading and watching videos on the internet there are quite a few build quality issues and unhappy customers. The virtual side mirrors also appear to be crap. Hopefully they can sort things out for the proper model when it is released.

Let me clarify the wording there - what I meant to say is in comparison to other manufacturers. EV sales in Australia are still only a virtually insignificant portion of national car sales. But on EV sales, the Tesla Model 3 is the most popular EV in Australia. They sold 3430 cars in Australia in 2020 with most of those being the Model 3. Other EV sales accounted for 1769 units. The numbers are from the FCAI (total EV sales) and national registration data (for the Tesla sales).
Yeah Tesla X anyday I reckon given the pioneer they are in EV's and especially the autonomous driving . But good to see others catching up. Pricing is still high, there is nothing smart in buying these apart from you can afford one haha.
A SUV created for the city...all you need now is fake roof rails, designer mud sprayed up tie side and every Aicklander will want one. No issue with electric, great when you’re in the city, but a 2.5 tonne SUV....that’s when you know you’ve lost the plot 😂
EV’s can’t handle the cold. They loose a lot of range when it’s freezing cold. So expensive. I really don’t see how they save the planet at all. Heavy industry to manufacture them with iron ore, gas, coal etc. Charing with coal, battery waste, lithium mining etc. this one looks good though. But until I get the range of 500-1000km with a refill time of under 5 minutes then no thanks.
Paul I love your reviews, really do and while I appreciate you telling us what is soft touch and what isn’t I don’t really give a shit how soft they are. Please get rid of the durometer readings!
Space saver spare and SUV do not go together. Okay for a micro city car but jst rubbish for an SUV. Space saver spares are dangerous. Because a space saver could be on the car in an emergency how will it brake? Swerve to avoid an animal, corner? ANCAP needs to take off half a star for that. my favourite question - How much does it tow? Another question, is it a direct competitor to the Volvo XC40 Recharge (full electric)?
Is it slow as the weight
