Best moment in the video is when you say the Audi is a luxury car and the Tesla is considered a luxury car because of it's price tag. That kinda sums it all up for me. I'm impressed with the technology of Tesla, but not with their car building. I considered getting me a Tesla and did a test drive, but after driving German cars for many years, I would not consider a Tesla to be a luxury car. The performance is impressive..., shame the build quality isn't of the same level.
There are a lot of things I like about Tesla besides the money I made with the stock. The tech and driving performance is really great. If I really wanted that only, I would have picked the Model Y or maybe X. But I wanted refinement inside and out and after driving the Teslas and the 2021 ETron. Bought the Etron. Couldn't be happier.
I test drove 2020 model and loved it. Bought a 2021 MY and have no regrets but the Audi is a real contender. Range will increase and it’s a true German luxury car.
The seat belt torsioner is meant to reduce any excess slack and “prime” your seat belt position to the driver/passengers so in event of accident it has less free play to travel. It’s not gimmicky, it’s a safety feature.
Watching this again after test driving the Audi e-tron sport back. Great car. I own a Tesla Model 3 and had a Y for 6 months before selling it. I agree with most of your comparisons. Like you said, most things will be personal preference like the difference in the regen braking (I like the Tesla ability to one pedal drive), but in the end, the Audi is a pure luxury car. The Tesla has sport performance in a fancy styled car, but I would not call the Tesla a luxury car. I’d call it more futuristic and very techy. I think the Premium with the Convenience Package is the way to go if you’re looking to cut a few $$$. I think the lack of range isn’t as big a deal since the charging rate is much better than the Teslas, especially the older model S and X that charge at a snail’s pace. 200+ miles has you stopping every 2.5 hours or so, which from a health perspective, is good practice anyway. Sitting for more than that is not good for your health. So, EVs are healthy too!
I agree wholeheartedly. If you want a EV with the best battery and electric drivetrain for off-the-line torque performance, get a Tesla. If you want real luxury amenities and willing to sacrifice some performance and battery range, get an Audi. If you want both luxury AND performance, get a Taycan 4S Turbo.
You can actually set the Audi to do regen braking as well and set how aggressive you want it so you can drive with one pedal as well just like the Tesla’s :) seems like he might’ve just not known about it. You can control it in real time by the +/- grey gear controls on the steering wheel
16:20 you can set it to do regen braking by using the +/- gear controls on the steering wheel for how aggressive you want it. Also the point of the comfort mode is to keep the steering wheel light and not react to subtle changes. If you like tight steering, it should be in dynamic mode, not comfort :)
I test drove the car last year and LOVED how it handles, the suspension is a dream. I missed the physical controls for volume and A/C. It looks like the Q4 eTron will have physical controls, way more range and a great design. That and the Audi experience with the eTron makes the incoming q4 more desirable for me. I am targetting the q4 eTron as my next car.
There are 2 volume controls; one is on the multi functional steering wheel; the other -for the codriver- is in the middle tunnel. 👍 A/C controls are almost never used. Once adjusted the car takes care of everything. That's why it's called Climate Control. 😉👍
I have found the e-tron to be very strong off-road. I think more attention needs to be given to that aspect of electric SUV reviews. That is, unless everyone is just buying these for soccer practice pickups and grocery store runs
I’m really liking the Etron. You can throw the epa range ratings out the door. The model y get more like 240-250 miles. I don’t like the rattles in my model y. I’m guessing there’s no rattles in the Audi. I’ll have to test drive it
Each driving mode changes the dynamics of the steering, so the Comfort mode you so enjoyed is going to have that play. Change it to sport or another mode, and the steering dials in and changes dynamically. If going to nick pick how steering feels, better know 100% how it actually functions.
Very helpful review. I had a Model Y LR AWD. Sold it because I didn’t like it. Not nearly as nice to drive as my model 3. Suspension is stiffer. Never got the quoted range and I drive like Ms. Daisy....The etron and Y aren’t that far apart. My test driving of the etron has shown the range estimator is very pessimistic and I often get much more range that the EPA stated range. Also, the charging is SOOO much quicker than the TESLAs. The only downside of the etron is the charging infrastructure is a bit sketch...chargers aren’t spaced as well as Superchargers, and the communication between the charging stations and the car aren’t always reliable...All that said, the etron is TONS better than the Y in just about every way, including luxury. Quiet, comfortable, great looking, and it’s an Audi! TESLAs aren’t luxury cars under any definition except price, and even there that’s on the S and X. Y and 3 are not luxury cars. Y and 3 have no rear HVAC. Limited adjustment on the seat (though they are very good anyway), no heads up display, no massage seat cabability, noise level is higher in the Y and X than the etron...nuff said. Still, Teslas are great cars and I LOVE my model 3, but not a luxury car, period.
If I was in the market for an EV this would be my first choice. the more traditional car look and feel over the minimalist Telsa compensates for range.
I think one of the mistakes that these reviewers make is trying to compare every EV to a Tesla cause it's the "gold standard" of electric vehicles. I think these reviewers need to keep in mind that not all consumers think that way. As a matter of fact, I think a better way to look at it is Tesla is a tech company that makes electric vehicles and then you have auto manufacturers(Audi, Ford, Jaguar, etc) that make electric vehicles. The latter are targeting certain types of people who are transitioning from regular combustion engines to electric and therefore, will have a lot of features that remind people of a regular gasoline engine car. When Apple comes out with an Apple car, I think that would be a better comparison for Teslas. People who jump straight into Tesla may have a certain mindset that the average consumer may not and therefore, they may be more comfortable with the auto manufacturers version. Let's be real. Yes Tesla may have range advantage and power and speed advantage but how often do you need that in day to day real life? Before the pandemic, I was commuting about 65 miles a day round trip for work. With other driving, I was hitting about 25k miles per year. If I look at 25,000 miles per year, heck, bump it up to 30,000 miles per year, that translates to roughly 82 miles per day every day. At 100 miles per day, every day, that's 36,525 mile per year. Do you drive that many miles in a year? Maybe if you own a business or commute really far away but I think the average is like between 15,000-18,000 per year so do you really need all of that range? You're going to come home and charge every day anyway right? I'll concede that you will have to charge more. The Audi would allow you to travel over 72,000 miles in a year with a 204 miles range per day. That is way more than enough for me. As far as speed, how often will you need to go from 0-60 in less than 4 seconds? Tesla throws out a lot of stuff that is impressive but not really practical for the average every day driver. I've been looking at making the jump to an EV this year and I looked at the Model 3 and Model Y but I didn't like the inside cockpit. I like car cockpits since I will be in there will driving. I like those way more than the exterior (but I think the 3 and Y exteriors look weird as well). The 3 and Y are way too minimalist for me in the cockpit so I would have to look up to an S or an X which I would have to get a used one quite honestly. I'm still looking at this Audi and I see used ones in the $50k range and I will look at the Mustang Mach E as well but it looks like they took a page out of Tesla's book with the big tablet and minimalist approach to the inside. The Audi eTron and Mustang Mach E get the tax credit that Tesla no longer gets (although there may be a new bill passed). That factors in for me as well. Good luck to everyone but I'm trying to get away from gas engines before the end of the year (and looking at going solar as well)
Because Tesla is the mother of EV world. Sure, there has been an EV dated way back in the 60's but without Tesla, there will stil be those boring, ugly, slow, and impractical EV like the old Nissan Leaf.
I’m looking to make my first vehicle purchase and the eEtron is one on my list. I drove a 2020 Audi Q5 for 2 years and I like how it handled. I’m no car expert and as silly as my question may seem, but is there any difference in driving an EV compared to a gas vehicle? Is there a certain amount of pressure that needs to be applied to the accelerator when driving?
Hi George, great video. I enjoy your Tesla videos too. I have a 2019 etron and love it. Two minor things you and your viewers should know... 1. On the touchscreens you are able to turn off haptic feedback (that provides the ‘click’ you are sending to feel like a button) once you turn it off the screens respond as a smartphone does...no long presses needed, just touch. I like it much more...and is seamless when in Apple CarPlay and Google Auto. 2. Someone asked about remote functioning of the etron through the smartphone app. Yes, you have instant on buttons or can be scheduled. Tesla is awesome, and love my Audi too. I hope this helps! All EVs coming out are a great step in the right direction!
@@jessiemcdermott4662 Yes, you can affect the climate, you can also schedule your climate. The app had a recent update that brings quick controls more front and center. It seems you can affect the charging too, but still checking it out.
E tron was outselling the Model X by large margin last year. And Tesla never reached their EPA range while E tron is beating their EPA range. So it s useless to talk about the range comparaison.
Jon, thanks for chiming in. In all reports I've seen, both Teslas still traveled much further than the Etron on a single charge despite the stated EPA ranges.
@@DriversOnly True enough, still you have one car underperforming based on the EPA range then the other car outperforming its EPA range. But then E tron has max real sommer range of 400 km (248 miles) that s good enough hence its success.
@@jonpetter8921 I think the prospective buyers of the e-tron are also already Audi owners themselves and don't want to compromise luxury and quality just for more range. In addition I think many buyers feel (myself included) that Teslas aren't attempting to refine their product as much and I think that reflects on their range issues. Still, I think I myself would consider the Tesla if for the extra security, but I think I would lean towards the e-tron.
This is the 1st time I have listened to George and I must say his smooth voice and command of knowledge of the car was a pleasure to watch. I want to see more luxury reviews as Im in the market for a quality, higher-end SUV now. The all electric cars are what is to be but I'm not quite sure I want to spend this much for a car that I need to search for charging stations for if I'm on the road.
I feel lane keep and adaptive cruise should be on the base trim. That brings it much more inline with the Tesla in terms of value with the rebate, because that feature is so useful
2:05 I like how you say based on price tag, cause I would argue with the statement that Tesla is a luxury car all day long. There is nothing luxury in Tesla, only good technology, but not luxury.
I think you need to do some more research...Electrify America is funded by VW as part of Diesel-gate...also, the fastest DC chargers are 350kw under Electrify America. As for the acceleration, it’s more than adequate. I wouldn’t call it slow by any means. I daily a Tesla Model 3 LR AWD with the performance upgrade and also have a LR AWD Tesla Model Y. The e-tron is a better luxury car in every way. AS you mentioned, TESLA is luxury in price only...no heated/cooled seats, noisy (relative to the luxury segment), and interior accoutrements...I came from an Audi Q7 (2017) before my Teslas, so I think I have a good reference point. Range and charging infrastructure is the plus for Teslas. But, if the charging infrastructure keeps improving for the non-Teslas, I’m game to try something other than Tesla. I love my Tesla, but like to try new cars...
Slight adjustment: in the e-tron you can choose between 3 levels of regen braking. Strong, weak, or none (pure coasting) by using the paddle shifters. Even the strong Audi regen braking is less than the Tesla's all or nothing regen braking.
@@8095jleon it is true and before owning it I had 1100km range with my A6 3 liter Diesel engine. However now that I charge at home over night and with COVID refraining me to travel as much as before, the 300kms range is pretty okay. I don’t know if the extra 100hp really make a difference as when driving in confort I usually only use 400hpich which is pretty powerful already.
"A lot less expensive" is a little misleading. As you note, the MY19 e-tron did not have a Premium trim level, just Premium Plus and Prestige. The MY21 e-tron with Premium trim removes several features, like ventilated seats and making the Advanced Driver Assistance Package not available rather than optional on the Premium Plus or standard with the Prestige trim. Audi did not just lower the price by $11,000, Audi also removed several features to create a more affordable base-level trim.
I decided for the Audi. The calm, relaxed luxury is what I wanted for my 1h commute. Especially with the camera mirrors it feels like hovering, not driving.
Sure I wish it had more range and speed as the Tesla. BUT it depends if that’s a factor for you. I haven’t taken a road trip in years. I fly 99% of the time. I don’t punch it and need to go 0-60 in 3 secs. I drive no more than 150 miles a day on a busy day as a Realtor so I’d just charge at home. Based on pure looks I think the Audi wins.
That tale about no/lesser regen seems to stick around forever? The Audi has a sophisticated braking system that regens into the battery when pushing the break pedal. Only if you need more breaking than 0.3g the calipers are actuated. I think there are very few brands besides Tesla that opted for a more primitive system where the break pedal always uses friction breaking...
How can you differentiate between a 2020 and 2021 model? I mean, they don't make and sell them on jan 1st, so from what date in 2020 will it be the 2021 model??
@@carl5438 You know that with one fill up of diesel fuel, I can store 800 miles of range in either my VW Touareg TDI Lux or my VW Passat TDI SEL. Only needs electricity for a bit to get 3 or 4 minutes of diesel fuel pumping to top off the tanks when they flow 4 + gallons per minute, and I can go 45 to 50 miles per gallon on the freeway. You do know this, don't you? How long a gas pump operates on electricity and how quickly it fills up, plus ease of storage of diesel fuel for emergency use, as folks with back up generators can tell you, makes your statement a non issue. There is simply no comparison, how much energy is stored in a gallon of diesel fuel or gasoline. Your logic is flawed.
It has become obvious to me that the tradeoff in range comes from regenerative braking and a bunchof other luxuries. Minimalism in a Tesla isn't a design preference, it's a necessity.
About acceleration: did you select the „S“ gear (with a short push of the lever backwards)? The normal „D“ mode is made to allow a smooth ride (like a „super chill mode“ in Tesla terms).
I think a major feature that was not brought up in this video is customer service support/ repairs. When you spend this kind of money on a car you want to know that you will have you questions answered and any issues fixed- in a timely manner. As a prior owner of the model 3 (bought new and sold it in 4 months for a Honda), tesla has major flaws in its support system. Obviously time will pass and they will get better in that department, but when you spend this kind of money, and our rely on your car, you need that support.
Notice that he never talks about the poor repair service time of any Tesla. Since Tesla has you as a captive audience, you are stuck waiting up to 3 or 4 weeks for some parts. While the Audi has a better dealer network, if I had to choose, I’d pick the new e-tron any day over the Tesla. Full disclosure: I am an Audi fanboy, and own one now. (2017 A3 e-tron)
Very informative. I was looking at a used 2019, but with the changes for 2021, I think jumping in at the 2021 or 2022 is worth it. I’m just concern about the steering wheel play. However, I think I will get used to it. Did the steering wheel play bug you that much? I haven’t seen anything that’s a show stopper from your review. In fact , your review made me more excited to own one of these. I just don’t like the inside of a Tesla. Thanks for you’re honest review.
No offense, but it would be good to clear out the settings before stating that something works in a certain manner; the display can be set so that it accepts just a light touch. You will lose the haptic feedback, but that is kind of emulated with a sound (which also can be turned off).
@@ScoobyFermentation because reviewing a car is supposed to objectively judge the traits of the said car. There are many more great EVs that can be used as a comparison, but it's just not right doing so.
Audi is a niche car of questionable value because of it's high price. This $70 k electric car is no exception. A $45k Tesla with 50 more mile range, supercharger network and better depreciation seems like a much better value.
If you want a EV with the best battery and good electric drivetrain for off-the-line torque performance, get a Tesla. If you want real luxury amenities and willing to sacrifice some performance and battery range, get an Audi. If you want both luxury AND performance, get a Taycan Turbo S
The only thing I like about the Tesla is the software. Only reason I haven’t upgraded my Audi is to see if they will ever come up with a better MMI experience. Super laggy and slow to my liking
So a 107 score and then trying to force me to visit your site to see how good that is? I would've visited your site anyway, but this cheap luring tactic backfired. Now I won't.
Most retarded feature I've ever heard of... if you can afford a luxury SUV, you can afford a garage to park it in, inside, so that those "features" are non features.
Wait a minute...you just said there were paddle shifters behind the steering wheel. What are those doing there, doesn’t this car hav an electric motor? There is not gear shifting needed.
Those are for controlling regen when you let off the accelerator. One side increases regen, the other decreases it. You can use them almost like paddle shifters. I have them on my MB B250e and that's how I use them. More regen is like downshifting to slow faster. ;)
You should never compare a German car to something made in America, as far as cars are concerned. You will very, very rarely find Audi having Quality Control issues like you will a Tesla, with body gaps, or 10,000 cars assembled with parts missing, or assembled and painted outdoors, not even in a paint booth. There just is no comparison.
The gear selector is weird. You could say 'PARK' is the most important gear and yet it's not OBVIOUS?? WTF! Looks like another "change for change sake"
Really don’t understand the point of that front grill. Form over function I feel. Hoping future models figure out a cleaner aesthetic that is functional. Tesla doesn’t have a front grill, but it’s ugly IMO.
Stopped watching as soon as I saw the interaction with the nav screen. That lag is unacceptable in 2021. Not even sure if it has carplay or android auto. That is trash. Are tesla and rivian going to be the only ev suv options?
If you look closely he actually filmed that section in slow motion. I own an e-Tron and the screen's not laggy like that at all. It's fully snappy and responsive.

In what universe ? According to Forbes sales from Jan to June 2020
Tesla model X : 9500
Audi E tron : 2872
Ofcourse it's in US market
Another really good honest test drive. Thanks George!
I saw one on the road this morning,...and I must say that I Like What I Saw! Looks very nice!
Audi is better than tesla every way except mileage per charge.
And that is changing as we speak. I'd like an EV that can carry a kayak on it and other boating gear, and the E-tron would be my decision.
@@snakeeyes9246 that would drastically reduce your mileage id imagine
Tesla Y should include: XM, CarPlay, Birdseye view, spare tire, massage seats and sound deadening.
Slight adjustment: in the e-tron you can choose between 3 levels of regen braking. Strong, weak, or none (pure coasting) by using the paddle shifters. Even the strong Audi regen braking is less than the Tesla's all or nothing regen braking.
Audi / VW owns Electrify America. So they actually do own their own charging station.
Compared both and chose the etron. And if you want more power, try etron S !
Why? Limited range and chargers.
@@8095jleon maybe it’s not only about range?
For me the quality is superior plus the crazy charging speed which outweighs the limited range by a lot.
EPA range is not the real live range (porsche taycan)
Tesla cars are luxurious because of the high price tags. ... Ha ha that is a good one.
I decided for the Audi. The calm, relaxed luxury is what I wanted for my 1h commute. Especially with the camera mirrors it feels like hovering, not driving.
You forgot the Jaguar I-Pace, which i like a lot.
My Audi A4 has awesome steering and very very responsive when in sports mode. Did you test this E-Tron under Sports mode or just Comfort mode?
Does it get over the air updates as the MY?
19:30 Model Y now has the Homelink option!
Hi George, what is the cost of charging outside of home?
I was expecting the "I'm George, we're all George".
I was looking for this comment 🤣
what would the range on the etron be if it had full regen braking like the tesla?
That tale about no/lesser regen seems to stick around forever? The Audi has a sophisticated braking system that regens into the battery when pushing the break pedal. Only if you need more breaking than 0.3g the calipers are actuated. I think there are very few brands besides Tesla that opted for a more primitive system where the break pedal always uses friction breaking...
The Audi has intelligent regeneration. It always regenerates, except when heavily braking. Only then the normal brakes come in.
@@CybertuxSpain If you check the power meter when braking heavily so that the discs are applied, you will see that it is still regenerating as well.
@@donvanvliet9477 You're right. I didn't write what I meant. Thanks for correcting me. 😉 Happy e-tronning! 👍
How can you differentiate between a 2020 and 2021 model? I mean, they don't make and sell them on jan 1st, so from what date in 2020 will it be the 2021 model??
Okay but what happens if the power goes out in the city and a snow storm hits like how it did in Houston a few months back? 🤔🤔
You do know that gas pumps operate by electricity? So everybody will be walking/skiing until power is restored.
@@randyvanvliet226
I have solar panels. I produce all my energy. I’m independent.
please does the Audi etron uses fuel or only electric
I like it. But I have yet to see one with a black headliner! Any idea why?
I think the reason the steering is less "sharp" in the Audi (and most other vehicles) is because it is more relaxing.
Yup. It is much better when driving on highways. Teslas get tiring because you have to constantly correct the steering.
Sounds good, nice review. Thank you
I think a major feature that was not brought up in this video is customer service support/ repairs.
Did you drive in Dynamic mode?
$80k? Ouch!
Hey that’s a lot less expensive 😂
So can you use a tesla charger for this car?
Review the new 2021 Acura TLX A-Spec with the SH-AWD
Great review, thanks!
But does it have falcon wing doors tho........
Hey George?? I didn’t know you review cars too.
this car is gorgeous plus quality and reliability. teslas are good cars but they are ugly man and they have long way to go in terms of quality.
No offense, but it would be good to clear out the settings before stating that something works in a certain manner; the display can be set so that it accepts just a light touch. You will lose the haptic feedback, but that is kind of emulated with a sound (which also can be turned off).
18:43 Tesla Model Y has a 3 level heated steering wheel, auto or manual!
Didn't expect to find George
Why all the focus on if the EV goes 3 sec to 60 miles or 6 sec or if it goes 150 or 100 miles top speed? Were are you going 100 miles?
Try the DC fast charging and it will top out the 2021 Tesla Model Y, it sustains 150KW to almost 80%
Would love an Audi EV but the range Is a deal killer. Not great for road trips.
The door on an Audi has soft close to it. That’s why there’s a delay in opening the door.
Nice info 👌, Tks!!
The steering on Tesla is horrible. I’d hate that a slight unintentional nudge to the wheel could swerve left or right
best review ever. you should test mx30, much cheaper but still very usable
Thanks
The mx 30 is not as good tho.
We are all George. 😂😂😂 I was surprised.
Good review except for the mis-use of "Free",...to be more accurate,...don't you mean "Included"! As in, not an option item!
Is this a review or a comparison to the Tesla's?
Both
How do you not compare it to pretty much the only other choice in that market?
@@ScoobyFermentation because reviewing a car is supposed to objectively judge the traits of the said car. There are many more great EVs that can be used as a comparison, but it's just not right doing so.
Review the e tron vs the e tron GT
Is that you George? Everyone is George, except me.
Real highway range tested by a major car magazine is really 225 miles for the model Y at average speeds. This car might do 190 to 200.
5:50 E Tron got smoked by a Ford Raptor 😂😂
they weren’t even racing
Audi is a niche car of questionable value because of it's high price. This $70 k electric car is no exception.
A $45k Tesla with 50 more mile range, supercharger network and better depreciation seems like a much better value.
If you want a EV with the best battery and good electric drivetrain for off-the-line torque performance, get a Tesla. If you want real luxury amenities and willing to sacrifice some performance and battery range, get an Audi. If you want both luxury AND performance, get a Taycan Turbo S
You can turn off regenerative braking off on the tesla as well so need to do more research with your tesla
Good review thanks.
But George you know you can turn off the regenerative feature on your Tesla, so it drives like a ICE car.
No you cannot
@@DriversOnly Obviously, DO, you are clueless about what you are commenting on!
You forgot about the 350 kw electrify america which is built by Volkswagen
There is also the Jaguar I-Pace.
Is there remote cabin temp preparation feature, so it's warm in the winter or cool in the summer before you get in?
Yes there is, can be set or manually done from the app
Yes.
More regen is like downshifting to slow faster. ;)
If it had another 100 miles range and could match Tesla’s speed, only then would I be interested
My friend has one it's awesome cost 84000 but if you can afford it I say buy it
You forgot to mention that the MY’s 326-mile range at full charge is not real world efficiency.
