New Audi e-tron Sportback Quattro EV real world review // Jonny Smith

- Welcome to the CarPervert Audi e-tron Sportback Quattro EV real world review. The new 2020 Audi e-Tron 55 Quattro Sportback electric 5-seater is the second full EV from Volkswagen's parent company. While VW focus on the ID.3 hatchback Audi is launching another SUV, but this time with more of a fastback coupe roofline compared to its elder sibling. When Jonny drove the regular E-tron last year he was distinctly underwhelmed. With the Sportback 55 Quattro costing some £9000 more and having less rear head room, a smaller boot and no performance upgrades, it does make you wonder whether there was any point in bringing this car to the electric vehicle party.
Starting at £79k, the e-Tron Sportback can easily be specced beyond the base price of a Tesla Model X Long Range (£85k) and is far beyond the cost of its Jaguar iPace arch rival, which can be had from £65,000. See below for the tech spec and comparison to the e-Tron SUV. Jonny is particularly proud of his verdict on this CarPervert first drive review.

I'm not looking for an 80K electric SUV ... don't like SUVs and don't have 80K burning a hole ... but I was rivetted, one of the best, most perceptive and enjoyable car reviews I've ever seen.
I
When you see that in some countries an e-Tron costs in business leasing not much more than an ID.3/ID.4; less than a Tesla M3 SR+, perhaps you will take an SUV even you do not really like the concept.
Finally someone who isn't into SUVs. I think this is the most authentic review channel I've seen so far. Thank you for the great content!
Thank YOU for watching. SUVs I struggle with on the basis that they don't really do anything better than a sorted estate car. They are heavier, less efficient, cost more to run, harder on brakes and tyres, and nobody really goes offroading in them. Increasingly, you also look like a clueless dinosaur driving them.
@@TheLateBrakeShow yep, they are just a pimped up hatchback at the end of the day
Ok for towing caravans but I'm the same not really better than an estate , although some bloke took one round combe a seat Alhambra 1.8 t rear wheel was a foot in the air round the chicane .
SUVs continue to dominate North American auto market. So ironic 😂
@@TheLateBrakeShow wanted to reply to the original comment, but you said it all already, suvs are ugly, worse, estates
How do you review a car virtually none of your audience can afford without offending us? By sharing your excitement and incredulity, tempered by insight and humour, that's how. Good review mate.
I agree with the second part.
Don't agree with the "virtually none of your audience".
'Virtually none' was a rhetorical device, but costing around three times the median annual salary of a full-time UK worker places it far beyond the means of the vast majority of us, so I think the thrust of my comment is sound. Happy for you if you have such means at your disposal, but take a look at the Polestar first brother.
Very few, of course, because we have already self-selected out of the content by clicking away, to the detriment of the channel. I thought Jonny had skilfully managed to keep a broad range of viewers engaged and entertained reviewing a highly aspirational product, in a medium with a notoriously short attention span. And that is a real skill well worth celebrating and encouraging.
Leon Baradino - Speak for yourself. I’m looking at all these E-Tron reviews b/c this is a serious contender for my next car. Drove one for a week while my A6 was in the shop. Wasn’t the sports back version, but nevertheless absolutely LOVED the car.

"Tesla Model X looks like a computer mouse” made me snort. So very true.
It was so funny the way he said it nonchalantly
Ok but it’s a 5 year old car which still out performs this Audi😂😂😂😂

1: 5 years isn't that long in the car world
2: it doesn't make it look any less like a computer mouse
Völundr Frey 5 yrs isn’t long and yet, almost every manufacturer comes out with a new version of the same model every year...
The tesla Model X looking like a computer mouse is the most accurate description i've heard! : D
I have the SB55 , and I love it ! Luckily here in Norway we have tons of charging stations so range is never an issue . Love the car and the luxury and the drive comfort is second to none. I previously had a Tesla X
Is this more comparable to Tesla X or Y?
@@almac9203 X for sure
The e tron ( both sportsback and normal ) are 4.9m long so they are big cars
How did you feel the change from Tesla to Audi? I can imagine way better quality in this one.
@@FlorinArjocu I can say for me personally everything is an upgrade in the Audi , except the app and the range . When it comes to range , I hardly never drive more than 400 km in one go. In Norway we have tons of chargers all over and at home I have a wall mounted charger , so range is a non issue . The app, yeah well the Audi app is pretty bad, but it keeps getting better, but the car. Wow the car is such a great piece of engineering. Drives great, it's so silent and it feels really luxurious. Its also a head turner , as the Tesla is something you see everywhere , the sportsback is quite new and tons of people come over to ask what car it is . We are quite lucky here in Norway as we get a lot of government grants to buy electric , so the price isn't as bad as it is in the UK ( and we normally have very expensive cars here in Norway )
@@Plex86 Sorry for bugging you. I have a curiosity: many Tesla fans use the acceleration argument, that thr cars are the fastest (or so) in the world. Was that a factor? In my mind, for a family car I want confort, could not give a damn for getting to 100 kmps in 5 seconds compared to 8 seconds. Do you feel this is important? Thanks.
Timing of an ad while Jonny works out how to open the boot was perfect.
It’s no Matra Rancho, that’s for sure
Loved the Rancho.... amazing what Matra did with the bog standard Alpine 1442cc engine and running gear... I had a Bagheera and the later Murena.. cool looking cars if very underpowered 🤨
Oh boy it's been a while hasn't it.
You may have a strange mind but your 2 car garage makes a lot more sense and gets my vote.
Great review. All the basic ‘boring stuff’ dealt with, and then put into context by thinking about how it might be used and who by. The last thoughts, Polestar and Honda? Perfect and absolutely on the button.
That’s really ‘Vorsprung durch Technik’
There is a non coupe E-Tron parked across from my house right now, looks amazing,
As always, I love your reviews! Really informative, enjoyable and relaxing. Thank you for your awesome work!

Hey...what about the camera mirrors...? You didn't show the screens.
No difference than the standard etron
well you can kind of see why he doesn't like them, they're visible in the video. 11:29 they seem to low to me and it's not where your eyes are trained to go...
@@knifeyonline it's just an expensive gimmick, and doesn't offer anything more than a mirror does. In fact, it creates more issues than it solves. I shudder to think how much they cost to replace if one got knocked off.
@@Rassilon72 I can think of at least one potential advantage. The camera will tend to have much better low light handling than the human eye. So in dark conditions you will probably be able to see a lot more than you could in a conventional mirror.
@@Rassilon72 I’m actually all in favour for the cameras. But on a car of this class, they should be standard, and better implemented. But as for the benefits...
#1: They offer better aerodynamics = slightly more range and even less noise.
#2: Much better visibility in rain and in low-light.
#3: No need to worry about blind spots.
#4: More flexible - view can change appropriately when reversing, etc.
#5: They SHOULD be cheaper to replace in case they get knocked off compared to a regular mirror.
With the cameras, all the expensive bits are on the inside of the car. Exactly the opposite with regular mirrors. Just look up how much a wing mirror costs on a regular modern car. About £800 for my BMW i3.
Oh man. This coupe suv trend is so weird. I just don’t get it. Dropped 90k on it seems mental too.
Nice video again Jonny!
Yes, the trend is stupid and makes no sense. Having said that, I'd buy one if I had the money, it just speaks directly to my lizard brain.
You can blame the BMW X6 for starting the trend. But some people love it so there's a market for it.
Yep I’m one. Drove the SUV eTron version last year and LOVED it. The amenities and technology is amazing. This Sportsback was not available yet, so waiting.

@notformebeaky Um don't want to buy from any of the above mentioned actually.

I just loved my Audi A5. One of the most beautiful cars and such a joy to ride. If they could make an EV out of it. It would be perfect.
The A5 is one of the only Audi's in recent years I've lusted over. Especially the older ones. Look amazing.
"Third verdict" made me smile. Clearly, @carpervert has a dream - which I could get behind :).
One more plus for this car: it will never be massively oversubscribed, like the e-up is. Or the e-smart. Or the Skoda citigo e .. or the Seat mii e.. ;)

Any plans about reviewing the Skoda Enyaq?
Yuck.
Good review of an interesting car. Glad you mentioned your hate of the SUV a few times less than the DBX video. 😉
Love your reviewing style, big fan of your podcast too.
Another outstanding review, Jonny. A stunningly beautiful car, but I'm inclined to go for a Polestar 2.
John Cutler if you do get a Polestar you’d be the coolest kid on the block.
@ John Cutler. Why not a Tesla then ? I’m not a big fan of Teslas myself but just wondering
@@gbej1 I initially fell in love with Tesla, but feel the build quality is not the same as well established cars, such as Audi or Polestar. (Volvo.) That's just my own opinion and I might be wrong. I had a test drive in a top of the range model S and it blew my mind away. What Tesla have achieved is phenomenal, but other car manufacturers are catching up, most with better quality and a far more superior reputation. I feel Polestar are very different and I like different. Everyone will choose Audi's, Tesla's, Jaguars, etc. It's just my personal taste. But, just to contradict myself, an Audi with a combustion engine, such as an RS5 will twist my arm. And that probably doesn't answer your question. 🤪
John Cutler. What puts me off Teslas....at least for now, is the plethora of obviously sponsored Tesla reviews all over the place who will eulogies over Teslas as if their lives depended on it. What really gets me with the model 3 is people trying to convince everyone that substituting practically every car function with one giant touch screen is some technological revolution, rather than calling it what it is which is cost cutting.
@@jeffharrison6059 no one is perfect. 😬

Thanas Stefanis V I’m not sure if it will do it for you but there is an MG station wagon coming out soon.
I think Volvo missed a trick not making the Polestar 2 a wagon/estate car.
@@adrianchell that is because the Polestar 2 is not made by Volvo. It is made by Polestar... I guarantee eventually Volvo will come out with a V60 EV.
@@Cheetahcubb About the only brand differentiator between the two is the badge, though. The seats, grille shape, headlights, touchscreen for the infotainment, steering wheel and a lot of other parts are straight from Volvo, and one of the V60 PHEV trim levels is "Polestar Engineered", so they're only separate on paper. You're probably right that Volvo will do a BEV estate, though, I just felt that, had the Polestar adopted the shape, they'd see higher sales through being first to market.
I'm waiting to see what Skoda do when they get interesting with the MEB platform - the Enya can sail away because it's just more bloody SUV dross.
How many times do you have to drive around the world until the savings from less drag make up for the £1500 rear cameras option?
I think the reason for getting that option would be more to maximize the abysmal range rather than saving money
Lol
@@travisopperud8738 Good point
@@travisopperud8738 it is not abysmal. Some manufacturers are just more honest than others.
EVPaddy your information is wrong, assuming you’re jabbing tesla. I regularly get my rated range or better on my sr+ model 3.
Such an honest, intelligent review. I think your concerns about price are spot on; this car is most usefully seen as a glimpse of where VWAG is headed with their more mainstream models - their primary problem will be bringing down costs.

Nice and relaxed review mr. Smith =) . Little nitpick: there's lot of low frequency rumbling on the mic inside the car. You can consider filtering that out with a high-pass filter around 100hz.
What I love about Johnny's reviews are that it is like sitting in the car with your knowledgeable mate giving you the lowdown on his latest motor. Great work. Tesla laughing all the way to the bank..literally when Audi and Mercs make their products look “cheap”. As a company director, sure I can buy and right off against tax 1 st year, but even so, it’s a still lot of cash. Better to buy small EV like i3 or Zoe “for the wife/ station run/ shopping “ and also get a normal SUV for messing about in and long family runs. Price is more of a piss take when you think it’s based on a MBQ or whatever platforms... as the cost of manufacturing is amortised over bigger production volume

Model Y appears to have more room in the boot and interior and frunk and it's lighter, faster and much less expensive.
Early production has been a disaster in terms of build quality and the interiors will never be a plush as an Audi but from all accounts
the seats are comfortable, the car performs way beyond expectations and the build quality is getting better by the month...although it
will not likely ever be as 'perfect' as the German cars. So except for the luxury interior and extremely quiet ride, why not add the Model Y
to the list of optional candidates ... once available in the UK.
Great video Jonny. If this had been released before the etron I think Audi would have received much higher praise than they got with the etron. This is the EV they should have opened with. Had it been around when I was shopping I’d definitely at least have taken it for a test drive. I don’t think I’d have bought one but it would have given me something to think about. But...... That price tag. Wow. Not sure if this is Audi attempting to limit demand because production is constrained but that’s a lot of money. The Jag’s not a cheap car so it takes some balls to go higher!
Yes Johnny you have nailed it on the head with the end of that video. Great video great video well done
Love the video, hate the car. I can't exactly say why, but that is how I feel.
Everytime you quoted what Audi said I just thought how dumb they were. The front trunk is absolutely useless, barely enough to stick a bottle of washer fluid next to the cables (who the hell wants to open an extra plastic door under a bonnet with two latches). The car is covered in lines that are supposed to look like battery bars, you know, the thing you stare at if you have massive range anxiety.
55 means 95 and 50 means 71. The charging port is behind a stupidly overengineered door. The cameras on the sides are almost as big as mirrors anyway. It's a "coupe SUV", whatever the hell that is.
Thankfully they gave it the perfect name. As long as you speak French.
I hate those coupé SUV. They seem like the hellish child of two things that should not have met.
Polestar 2 + Honda E over this any day!
Model y is much better value
@@ChristianPryds Skoda Enyaq* is a much better value. Heck it's even cheaper than the ID3 and you get a high quality spacious CUV for the price
Vlad Saghin the ID 4 has awful charging speed! Maybe also the similar skoda. both have too few sensors. AND I do not think that VW has the same incentives to build the cars to last really really long. This is how the model y and the model 3 are build since Tesla will earn money on their cars over time. Incentives rules this world. I would bet a lot of money on that Tesla’s will drive longer than all other EV’s on the market. Tesla is the ONLY one that can benefit for long lasting cars.
Vlad Saghin you are also neglecting total cost of ownership which is really the price you pay. In that regards I am sure the Tesla Model Y is even cheaper than the ID 4!
@@ChristianPryds right, the 50k USD long range electric suv Model Y is definitely cheaper in the long run than the 32k USD equally long range electric suv ID4. Keep telling yourself that lol
Whilst I quite like the look of this, and it's interior is lovely, relatively speaking it makes the Jaguar I-Pace look like a bargain, and that car looks stunning. Your alternative two car purchase is tempting too though! Love the t-shirt btw👍.
Great review as usual cheers Johnny! I love the summing up at the end! It's good to hear that someone like yourself appreciates the madness of these crazy expensive, crazy big cars being less capable than other options.
Who else instantly hit pause at 0:35 and searched "translate etron" on Google :D
Turd
Not me
@@Luckyjo21 I mean, if Toyota can sell TRD models, Audi can sell etrons, right?
Didn’t Toyota have the same issue in France with the MR2?
Stopped watching at 89grand.....🙄
Seriously....Tesla Cybertruck Tri-Motor 💪🏻🤓😎🤓😎🤓😎👍🏻
I wish all cars had the side video mirrors! You're right the units on this car are bigger than they need to be. They reduce both the frontal area and the coefficient of drag.
Got those lights on my new A3 , they are incredible by the way..
My god that is one ugly over price peace of pig iron🤢
'piece' ........
what about the car?
0:33 Instantly looks up etron in french.....What is Audi thinking :)
Another top notch no nonsense review from a top notch no nonsense guy.
Awesome review brother!
I've seen a few e-trons around and I've noticed on the a couple of them the tail light 'bar' across the back as already failed.
Great review Jonny! Polestar&Honda-e comparison puts Audi price in perspective. Anyone else spot at 17:50 infotainment screen left hand/right hand swap between shots?
Great review.
Great review and I like the 2 car theory. If they could downsize this to a q4 for half the price in basic form I could have my i3 replacement.
Absolutely, I would get the Polestar over this any day of the week. It’s almost as stylish, way cooler, far less expensive, almost if not equally as practical and has a better range than the Audi. Thanks for bringing it up.
Top review as ever👍😂
Nice looking vehicle, but a bit pricey. You hit all the key points Johnny, thanks for the review.
.... my grandfathers 1967 Austin 1100 had an active grill, that opened via a secondary thermostat !
Does it not have foot wiggly boot opening?
All the people benefit from your viewpoint sir.
Had one of these behind me with these fancy lights, consistently blinding me through my side mirror 😂 flashing as it adjusted the "carpet" distracting everyone
My Q3 is paid up now my dealer called to talk about what I'm getting next. They loaned me the 55 e-tron for a weekend when it was launched and he knows I want an EV next, I made that clear 5 years ago when I bought this Euro6 diesel. They only have the two 'trons at the moment and they're way over budget. MEB based Q4 is on the way but 2nd quarter next year? maybe?
He's asked me in to all about optimum trade-in and to see what they can do. I will go listen to what they offer and I'll be dead straight. I love the Audi, the build quality and the cabins. I've been the factory and suppliers here in Belgium for work, They're a technical masterpiece and extremely well engineered. Their pricing though, swings right out the pan. A new Q3, similar spec to mine is over €60k with all the options. for that money I've got a Tesla or Polestar and leaning slightly towards the Polestar because everyone has a Tesla, a bit like everyone has an Audi.
Or you can get a Tesla 3 for almost *HALF* of that and call it a day 😂
Cheers Jonny, great review, 10/10 for interest, engagement and sagacity. The car ... not so much. What did Chops think of it?
Cheers Ched!
great review Jonny, agree with you, sporty looking well ok, it is tough to beat the interiors they are always well done for comfort/materials, the cost well I am here in Canada where the federal Gov't has done little to nothing to promote EV's or a coast to coast charging network, and for the dealers here to sell whatever brand of EV there is a heck of a waiting list and the dealers all mark up the price on them and just say well too bad, 2 friends went to buy EV's one a Tesla model 3 long range and the other a Kona EV with the i think it was 78 kilowatt battery pack , they both expected they'd have to pay the window sticker price and rudely surprised they'd have to add about 5k to the Tesla and 10k for the Kona EV , which made the Kona more than the Tesla we are just getting held for ransom on EV pricing here in Manitoba, it could just be the dealers here, I would just like to buy the Honda -E myself and don't need anymore than that , plus its just a cool car in its own right and is RWD , my preference and my round trip to work daily is only 80 kms, so this is fine, Honda Canada says they will go on sale in Canada in 2024, wow just over 3 years from now, by then they will have a longer range battery as standard for me again they forecast 10-12 %, the crazy part again it could start at $46000 CDN or 26000 sterling that is still a big lump to swallow, I use to work for Volvo Canada some almost 30 yrs back and have been offered some nice incentives on pricing on a Polestar 2, they are working to get them out in the market, mine would be RWD model don't need AWD, not necessary for me i know how to drive in winter, and the discount was quite attractive to me, and love Volvos been driving them 40 yrs now, best car,
This is great and I know Audi is a premium manufacturer but prices need to come down. Looking forward to the Q4 E-Tron.
part of the reason it's so expensive is because the quality control each car goes trough, its a much higher standard then the A1 was (audi belgium factory)
Thanks Jonny. As always, a very insightful and balanced review. As a five-time Audi owner, I'm very disappointed in Audi's approach to electrification/decarbonisation, but I guess your summation does give some pause for thought; maybe their approach will get more of a certain type of owner into EVs... However, I'm also wondering how the e-tron Sportsback is more than 2x the car that my relatively humble BMW i3 is...
I3 is a far better vehicle in terms of engineering, unique design and materials. A future classic undoubtedly.
