I forgot to metion about we also put a plug in the pump on that same oil hole. so 2 plugs. Also especially the 30mm sometimes the pump housing rubs the rivets or bolts on the cam and wears them off behind the pump. Make sure they do not rub against the cam. @@r.arabian3056 yea I was planning on addressing that on the next engine build but I am not sure if I will even make another engine video because Chris quit and works somewhere else now.
Mike , I had this problem on a new VW of Mexico case. and found that different brands of pumps that their O.D. is all over the place. the way to check it is without the studs . If you can put the pump in with out having to beat the shit out of it or loosen the case bolts. ITS TO LOOSE. I caught it by when I built a 100% new engine it had only 4 lbs oil pressure hot. I bought 4 pumps of different brand and they all mic wrong. The Mellings cast iron pump was the biggest but I had to change studs. While the studs were out I slapped the pump in there and it would rattle? There was .030 gap between them. like I told you once I soldered around the pick up holes and shoe shinned them till I could get the pump in and it went from 4 lbs hot to 45 hot and the engine ran 92 thousand miles till it chewed the rivets on a 4 rivet cam !!! It probable ate the rivets because at start up it had 60 lbs and that is alot of stress on the gears??? The Mains on it #1and 2 had just .0007 and .0011 is the limit. Thanks for Video.
Mike another good tip on oil pumps did not know this i will tig and surace grind my next one..I ahve a new alum. case building a stock motor for my 67 Bondo Condo I got the case on sale for $700.00 I'm sure it is due to it being stock bore ..i check to see if I could bore it out. I have a friend who will let me use his Bridgeport mill & boring bar he has high end miller tig i can use for the gear and a surface grinder. Cool will be like the old days before i got into engineering , when i was a tool maker; still have all my tools and Kenndey tool boxes have they ever gone up in price..
yea if you have the money We welded it without getting it too hot just a tack. This is a mid budget motor build. trying to keep the price down a bit. but good point thanks for putting that up there someone else might want to do that.
You're supposed to put that plug in the oil pump not in the case I did one of those one time has the modify the bracket that held the engine up in the rear came out real nice.
Thanks for the information Mike. Wanted to get your thoughts on an the oil system on a Aerovee (aviation) application. See any issues with running the oil filter off the stock cooler location and the cooler of the front of the pump ? Currently have high oil temps in the summer. The cooler is hooked up to the top mount location. Seeing alot of different ways people did it and not sure which one is right or the best.
So I get the one OUTLET on the front of the oil pump if you decide to add an oil cooler....BUT what I don't get is if you have TWO outlets on the same cover if I decide to go that route and not full flow the case....how does the oil return? I thought the face of the pump was pressure side? Left side of gear set draw in oil..right side push out..? I hope you get what I'm saying..just trying to decide because I have the dual outlet cover, but I'm trying to figure out if I should full flow and tap in a plug like you explained. My heads spinning...I need to go stare at the pump and case. EDIT...tap in plug and keep the dual outlet cover?
as I remember one is an outlet and one is a return. haven't done one that way for many years. just like the oil filter has one outlet and one return that goes on the pump cover.
If I remember right the return goes back into the pump pickup side so it is not as efficient as doing it the single way. almost like having a oil bleed off before the oil goes through the engine.
Hello mike, today i installed a new oil pump on a 1600 en forgot to check the clearance. I started the engine and the whole gear got chewed up in the pump cover plate!! Never seen that happening. So the drive gear shaft is 2.2 millimeters longer on the new pump and got jammed between the camshaft and pumpcover plate. Is this normal? Have you ever heard of this? The engine is a rebuild 1641 thats running fine for 2 years now. It cant be that the cam clearance is out, its 2.2mm!!?? What am i missing? How would you solve this mike? I ended turning down the shaft with my lathe, installed it again and it makes no pressure, the housing is completely chewed up because failing the first time. So when i buy a new pump again, how would you clear this out?
Hi Mike, great vid. I've got a new 1776 with the full-flow case mod. I'd like to add a remote oil filter. Have you seen any clean relocations done on split buses? Any ideas? Thanks!
When you put your new pump in your new case , it mite feel tight , It can be just the interference of the studs , and the pump dont fit worth a shit . It has to grab , or you aint got a seal. I mean back in the 60s remember taking your orig.. VW engine apart and if you did not loosen the case you broke the ears off the pump pulling it. It would GRAB.
I often wonder if there wasnt a better design for the pump surface. just seems to me they could have improved that over the years. Circle on circle just seems old school. What about a flange that bolts on somehow. Maybe vw could have learned from other car companies.
mostly but that also depends on where and when your driving your car. If you are in a high heat area, might be a good idea either way. but midwest northeast probably not necessary at all. just gotta check your engine temps to see.

Nobody has done a video on "how to clearance" cam bolts and the oil pump. Might I suggest that?

@@Mikefngarage Appreciate that. Like the video. Happy 4th!
Thanks Mike, I’m learning a lot from you. You are a vintage VW treasure!

Every one of these videos is a wealth of knowledge
Good info Mike, you beat me to the punch with the oil pump info.
you can do one too it never hurts to have another persons opinion.

I watch the videos over and over
thanks bud
CB performance sells oil pumps with a keyed gear. Welding not required.👍

Is it Ok to use Permatex High Tack sealant on oil pump gaskets? Its reddish sticky liquid. Thx

Yes I have We put mine under the cargo floors on the left with a fan cooled oil cooler.

yea for sure hard to get those pumps out unless you take out some bolts. and still might break an ear off.
I often wonder if there wasnt a better design for the pump surface. just seems to me they could have improved that over the years. Circle on circle just seems old school. What about a flange that bolts on somehow. Maybe vw could have learned from other car companies.
Would you recommend full flow only when going big bore,
mostly but that also depends on where and when your driving your car. If you are in a high heat area, might be a good idea either way. but midwest northeast probably not necessary at all. just gotta check your engine temps to see.
I installed a 30mm pump but my studs are way to short. What should I do.
do o-rings on the outer diameter on the pump really help with the pressure?
Is this supposed to be "VW flat four? oil pump?"
yes
