Good comment true is what you're saying those wrist pen bushings on those rods look like their shot. The second most important is having engine and not to pound out the rear bearing is you run a lightened flywheel and you can have i 8 pin the crankshaft.

All your videos are awesome you’ve inspired me to build my own engine. Thank you Mike! Hope to meet you one day at a show !

The original pistons in a Volkswagen engine were cast. I’ve used these AA Pistons, and I thought they were great. I bought all four complete pins clips rings cylinders and pistons. 85.5 mm....stock 1600 For $100 plus I think $15 shipping or something like that. What a bargain. They were beautifully made, fit perfectly and weighed exactly the same within 1/2 a gram.
I see no reason why they wouldn’t serve perfectly for a long time.

totally agree. the stroker ones are lightened and made perfectly.

Hey Mike a helpful tip , when you screw in the head studs do not tighten them up real tight , because when you do this the threads are being pulled on before you even put the head on. I got this from a engine builder in San Antonio - Pat Rutlidge. Just give then a snug not a grunt???

Great to hear good things about AA pistons. Looking at getting a set, much cheaper than Mahle etc and we're talking a mild street driver than won't be stressed. This is very reassuring opinion, thanks Mike!

For my WBX builds I like to run new liners but reuse the original Mahle pistons where possible.
Mahle originally forged pistons and still do for Subaru engines.
Nothing wrong with the current AA stuff but they have had some serious QC issues in the past.
The guys I deal with in the UK always do their own QC checks to cover their asses.

djambrosia Do you mean stay with the stock pistons? And just add new jugs and rings? I don’t know what the stock pistons are made of

@@SladesVWBeetle Not sure if original T1 pistons where forged or cast but Mike would know better. The wbx original forged pistons seem to hold up well.

djambrosia I wanted to put new pistons and jugs, but if the stocks are good quality I’ll just do jugs and rings! I didn’t remove mine yet, I just wanted fresh compression..etc If that even made sense lol

@@SladesVWBeetle Once the engine is apart you can inspect them. If nothing is damaged and everything is within the wear limits you can reuse them. This will be fine for a stock rebuild. Same goes for the barrels.

@@djambrosia the engine came out of a parts car that I bought along with the car that I'm currently doing as a project car. The motor ran great, there was no problems. But the prior owner remove the exhaust and broke a stud which cracked the corner of the head. So I don't really need to split the case, but I figured while I'm replacing the heads it might be a good idea to check the Pistons and jugs. Just in case there's a little bit of wear at a loss of compression.

Hey hold on now, What you failed to Mention is what it does to the case when you add weight. Even on a stock motor this is what happens= when it goes into compression stroke lets say #3 the crank comes up and what goes on is the head studs are pulled outward holding the head , at the same time the # 1and 2 mains are pushing the #1 side of the case the opposite direction. And the more you add to this with C.R. and weight it causes case clap. This is why Mike has gone to a Super Case ? Why a type 4 dont have this problem is not that its aluminium it is how it is shaped . there is not such of a long distance from the bottom to the top. Its like when you are framing a wall , you can take a stud and push it and it will give. but a 4 foot piece will not give . Almost every engine that I have had has lost the thrust do to case clap!!!!!! On my bus it happens around 90 thousand miles.except when I use a new case . !? Old Vw case are stressed already. If any of yall gonna build a new engine do what Mike has done Super Case? It has fill in behind #3 to slow down the case clap and those shuffle dowel pins..

man Jimmy you should have wrote the book. That is exactly why I like the aluminum and it has shuffle pins to support that torque flex.

Hi Mike. Are you taking these apart and cleaning before use, or running straight out of the box?

    • @Mikefngarage
      @Mikefngarage  5 лет назад +2

always take apart and clean. we did find metal shavings in these from time to time. just a remove blow them off a bit wipe them down then install. That is how I do it.
