G'day Kevin from Australia. It's been a good build easy to understand not over complicated and it looks and sounds awesome can't wait till its installed. ✌
we chose that engine because we feel like most people could build this themselves if they watched and read a few things. Plus it is a super strong combo for a bus or bug.
Its a VW guys ! should have a Fire Extinguisher on Hand LOL , did by first top end build on my Trike six months ago all is going well so far ! this vid gives me the courage to have ago at a all new full rebuild ,thanks guys thumbs up
the Bosch 007 centrifical force distributer is set with the engine shut off. It is set at 7 degrees before top...that is real close to the weith of the raised case half. TDD is center slit between halves, just set crank pully slot at the outer edge of left case half-raised area where 13 mm bolts go. Turn ignition on rotate dist until you hear spark. Removing the cap will make it easier. Snug up clamp bolt and rotate crank counter clockwise half a turn. Rotate clockwise and listen for spark, you can also watch for spark. It looks to be a fair build. I've built 50 or so high-performance air-cooled.
we did set static timing but second guessed it when we were putting on the fuel line after we had tried starting and not getting fuel. pulled the coil wire loose and second guessed the timing.
One of the key most important parts of a VW engine for longevity lightened flywheel so you don't pound out the rear bearing and have the thing balanced. The heavy flywheel when the two rear cylinder fire causes rear bearing to hammer itself which works out the case.
We used to build a lot of VW engines at flanigan's machine shop formerly in Belmont CA. Where we would have contest to see how fast we can pull a VW engine out I think the fastest time was 12 minutes. That includes jacking up the the vehicle.
Great work guys hope you get a ton of fun out of it just rebuilt the 318 out of my 76 dodge w100 powerwagon adventurer 4×4 runs great can't wait to get bodywork and paint done emerald green metallic and flat black two tone gorgeous truck
1. Break-in oil - straight weight non- detergent oil to get all parts seated 2. You did say 20 minute run without load? Great way to glaze the cylinders and not seat the rings. Always mounted the engine and ran several moderate to high load runs up hill, if you can, to get cylinder pressures up for ring break-in. Nicely done series!

Love the video, I hears thats a great motor and also cool, small pistons with longer stroke. How torquey is the engine? Im thinking of getting one built for my 70 hitop bus
good job overall ,,,,try static timing it before starting instead of turning the dist over and over ,,,you may like it LOL ,,,,it will start everytime after that ! better oil pressure then i get on my stock 1600 in florida ,,,,its hot hot hot here ,,,,i think last summer we came back from riding and i pulled out my temp gun i beleive if i remember right i read 237 on the valve covers ,,sometimes i wonder how they cool themselves around here but they some how do ! thank you for the show
Hi - sorry if I missed it, did you say what bhp you were expecting ? Also interested to know if you can satisfactorily get rid of the extra heat that comes with any extra bhp over stock - a question for later on, I guess.
expecting somewhere in the 100 to 110 range. Not a super high performance but great solid power for a bus. and easy start up with auto choke. That is why I am calling it a bulletproof build solid reliable powerful and strong.
Holy ether Batman. If you static timed it(did you?), and you had power to the coil and the wires on correctly. It would have run on the ether alone. You must have had no power to the coil. or the wires on backward. lol. Just got to 6:52. Yep, no pixies from the coil. LOL. I've done this exact thing countless times. I never learn. It's always something simple like that. Sounds super smooth. Congrats!
static timing was right on when we couldnt get fuel he pulled the coil wire loose. barely and second guessed the timing. Plus choke shut and accelerator pump diaphragm bad. Fuel pump not getting up to the carb. Multiple issues.
Mike Fn Garage a small piece of history from the 1959 Volkswagen ad campaign “ Think Small”. 1/2 book of unused matches with the dealer address that I worked at for 29 years, that ad came out before I was born but the new owners were tossing them out.
I've never seen one so slow to start, rebuilt or not. Seen some started with just a wrench on the crankshaft pulley nut. Had you done a proper static ignition timing before first attempt at start? It sounds good running.

we may take it to the dyno if he isnt using it we will see but maybe 105 thinking round about. if I put big carbs on it it would be much more but would break the trans.
hey mike i would love to come bye one of these days and check out your bus ! i live in the area of salton city not to far away from you! i also got a bus that i am wanting to bring it back live on the road!
Somebody should have read the VW repair manual it tells you how to safely set the valves and timing short starts up the first time every time the engine sounds like it's hurting
yea all done but this is reality pulled the coil wire loose when trying to get fuel. Real life not whats in the book. put the timing way off trying to figure out the coil wire was loose.
I'm sure it'll run after messing with that terrible carburetor! I hate those things. I don't know why people still buy them and I don't trust anything from Empi. Duals are so much better and easier.
Idk about dual carbs being easier. especially when you clog a jet or need to adjust them on a bus. Once adjusted and jetted it will be great with choke and easy morning startups. stay tuned. watch the next few videos of when its tuned. Had one of these in the 80s when all my buddies had duals and kept up great with them also they were in the shop while I was driving to the beach.
Some questions. Most of the air cooled VWs I see are running duels why the single carb? Did I miss something? How good would this engine setup work in a 72 bus? Thanks.
they make a modified tin setup for installing a type 1 in a early bus. check CIP1. The reson for the single carb is for easy start more torque less adjustments. Longer intake is for more torque. I would run one of these VS type 4 in a bus just like it its.
single carb with choke for easy morning starts. Dual carbs can have more adjustment and maintenance issues. More horsepower but potentially less torque because of the short intake runners.
we thought it was set correcty and it was. but when we had to jack with the fuel line it pulled the coil wire out. Sorry this is reality this is what happens when you are getting something to run sometimes. videoed it all and not hiding anything. Not HGTV here.
we had it on a fast idle for 20 minutes to break in the cam. yea there were some other carb issues. too. choke thermostat was bad and the accelerator pump bad out of the box. plus the fuel pump check valve stuck shut.
would somebody please explain what that electric fan was supposed to do? This is an air-cooled engine, does not have a radiator, sucks in more air than that fan can ever produce.Looks to me that somebody tried to be a smart ass
You forgot the sauerkraut, everyone knows that a new VW engine will not start without breathing through a sauerkraut salad, just reminds it it is german and german engineering never fails!
My comments are ---- lets see the oil . some of the engines that I had that lasted good had terrible debris on the break in . On those black pistons they make so much shit I thought this cant be good but it lasted just as good as any other motor. And this is something you said the other day. If it is not a MOTOR then do you ride a ENGINECYCLE????? That carb. is kinda 1600 size . at least open up jets a little. it will hold down the RPM . 80 lbs oil pressure is showing a good tight crank and no bleed outs !!!!!! On my motor the relief valve by the flywheel opens due to heat. when the motor warms up you can hear it when it opens. Last comment ----- what is your address in Riverside and what time do you go to sleep!!!!!!!!!????????
ENGINECYCLE LMAO. damn jimmy you got the good stuff. Yea that engine is pretty pricey. guys are paying like 8 grand for one of these OTD from a rebuild shop. We revved it up as soon as it hit the secondary even with the cough it sounded like it would suck your whole head down that carb and bumped 6k rpm in the blink of an eye. I just wanted to fix the fuel leak then I was going to continue the video but no parts available. so I had to end it. I think we will be doing the other MOTOR in the shed to a 1968 74 to show how easy it is to do a 74 vs using a 69. will tear it down and see if the parts are still good inside. I dont want to do another new parts complete build just too much money. Mag case should be good on that one still I built that one back when I was super young and had no money. Traded stuff to get that motor back in the broke teenager days. kept it all this time. That is the one that hit 105mph with a 4.12 so hopefully it is still ok inside. a little abusive teenage lead foot with more balls then brains. hoping the Forged pistons made it.
the cheap ass teenager never paid for an 8 dowel or a counterweight crank so that is why I stopped driving that motor. flywheel started to come loose so it pulled it. before it damaged anything.
is that the empi 32/36 progressive car? are you having problems with getting full throttle when pulling on the cable? i have that same carb and noticed that i couldnt get full throttle. take a look at my video i mad a linkage for this carb. ruclips.net/video/wmcgwLO5duA/видео.html
It is just hard to push the pedal but I think we got it worked out would love to see that video Will check. it is the older real webber version smaller than the 32/36
The initial starting problem was a poorly connected coil wire shown at 6:44. It took all that time to discover it was an ignition problem after numerous fuel primings that produced no firing? That's very poor basic diagnostics guys!
WRONG you fail. It was FUEL and when he rerouted the fuel pump he knocked the coil wire loose. causing the spark issue. Then second guessed the timing because of the coil wire. We were cranking it because we didnt know why the fuel was not priming the top filter. Figured out and we have done this before and it worked like this the lift pump was triggering the check valve in the mechanical fuel pump not to deliver the fuel up to the top filter behind the carb. HA HA your FAIL.
Ahhhh! Did you install the rotor? Coil wire spark don’t mean go! Lol Wait ::: did you install head to intake gaskets? Keep cranking!! Swap cyl wires 7 & 5 that should help! With all that starting fluid you could drop that on Hiroshima Japan! I think it’s the battery ( add jumper cables)! Try a As seen on tv start. (Have your buddy come work on it for 5 days off camera and then say look first try!!! Ooh wait too late for that! Lol This is fun! Is this a training video on all the ways you can’t start a vw? Lol now back to cranking. Whoops not the pump either! This is engine abuse!!
FYI I changed the exhaust this one needed the 1.5 inch merged. was getting way to hot on the flange. Ran that one temporarily for the will it run

On stores that offer their inventory online I have what I wanted go there that won’t work they say 😡 please pull the part and bring it up here I understand you don’t carry Empi replacement parts but take this carb number to see what cars may have used it now using you company’s part number for the carb look to see what replacement parts you offer for it , and now I have what I need a cheaper $ and you have a sale and maybe they have learned something so that poor customer doesn’t hear I’m sorry we don’t carry that , you need high $ dealers. 1 part (peace) May have 10 or more different part # or sub manufacturers I know some work has been to standardize this but updates and general understanding is slow in coming, Oh USA this isn’t a perfect world I’ve been told by my bosses, say let’s make it one they say cost to much and takes to long what mr money bags isn’t looking at is once completed efficiency will more then make up for the cost. Oh wait would that be someone who takes pride in there work dam that takes to long and cost to much this one time you can learn something from history looking at a USA 1950’s employee to today’s employee that answer is its not my job to do my job I’m only here for the money. As said earlier it’s my opinion and I’m a Dinosaur lost in time !!!
@@jeffgibson184 yea for sure the old school parts book worms are not there anymore. I trained a woman at the shop I worked at in parts while I was a mechanic she became the main rep for standard ignition. ended up making more than me. Gave part numbers cross reference went by pictures and nobody had it in stock. Ebay someone had 2 listed. but even amazon no accel pump but a few different kits. The regular parts stores only had 57 dollar kit. I just said for that ... 2 gaskets and an accelerator pump no way I am paying that.got them for 15 bucks or less on ebay shipped. 27.95 for a whole kit on amazon I will be using on my other carb. Used the pinto application too already knew that one. THanks for the comment and so many people can read these for reference.
Should run, may take a bit of carb tweaking as the engine is larger.
yea fighing the choke shut and the accel pump was a nightmare
Love the video, I hears thats a great motor and also cool, small pistons with longer stroke. How torquey is the engine? Im thinking of getting one built for my 70 hitop bus
good job overall ,,,,try static timing it before starting instead of turning the dist over and over ,,,you may like it LOL ,,,,it will start everytime after that ! better oil pressure then i get on my stock 1600 in florida ,,,,its hot hot hot here ,,,,i think last summer we came back from riding and i pulled out my temp gun i beleive if i remember right i read 237 on the valve covers ,,sometimes i wonder how they cool themselves around here but they some how do ! thank you for the show
What is the expected power and torque from this engine? Thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience with us 👍😀
not really sure we may put it on the dyno our friend has one but gotta ask him once its tuned thinking around 105 or something like that
Id use a set of dual carbs instead of the 2 bll progressive carb.Nice set up tho.
It's the fuel lines ... They are around the wrong way on mechanical pump?
no they were right but the check valve was fighting us.
I think it will start just make sure you break it in how you plan to drive it after first 40min of 2000 to 3000 run you should be fine
no comment but I need to know if I can buy engine for my Bettle and send it to me,I live in African Tanzania
Got a love the Chinese they are going to start selling at Wal-Mart any time now
just gotta watch out for the cheese metal.
It will run, mike how do I mail a piece of Rhode Island VW nostalgia?
whacha got
Mike Fn Garage a small piece of history from the 1959 Volkswagen ad campaign “ Think Small”. 1/2 book of unused matches with the dealer address that I worked at for 29 years, that ad came out before I was born but the new owners were tossing them out.
Tweeking those Weber DGVs was fun.
I've never seen one so slow to start, rebuilt or not. Seen some started with just a wrench on the crankshaft pulley nut.
Had you done a proper static ignition timing before first attempt at start?
It sounds good running.
yea that was disappointing. we werent getting any fuel then bumped the coil wire off and second guessed the timing so it all went sideways.
timing was static correct when we started.
What size crank are you running?
78 stroker but I think most are 78.5. They do also make a true 78.
@@Mikefngarage what are your thoughts on a 94 x 69 engine? I am planning to rebuild my tired 1600 bus rivi engine and looking to build it for daily driving. Need your recommendations😁😁 I am torn between 1776(90.5x69) and 1915(94x69)
Sounds good. I wounder what kind of horsepower
we may take it to the dyno if he isnt using it we will see but maybe 105 thinking round about. if I put big carbs on it it would be much more but would break the trans.
the inferred temp probe is for surface temp only. it will not measure air temp.
for sure. but the engine lid inside the garage is what I used to show ambient temp.
hey mike i would love to come bye one of these days and check out your bus ! i live in the area of salton city not to far away from you! i also got a bus that i am wanting to bring it back live on the road!
try coming out on an event weekend like OCTO. then you can find some stuff at the swapmeet
@@Mikefngarage what is OCTO?
@@varmintgetter orange county transporter organization huge split window bus show. look it up on thesamba.com
@@Mikefngarage thank you, I hope to attend one. I like the information you give us and thank you again.
Was it built with ac ? So funny the greatest car for winter travel , but the worst heaters ?!!
its gona start! i don't bet but i bet you! lol😁
glad you guys believe in me some dont. ha ha but they will learn...maybe.
Hi Mike, nice video also you explain very clear….but you sell and send engines to be assembled or already assembled? Thanks
no these are for my cars. If you need one build the best place is Brothers machine shop in ontario CA. They build a good engine.
Guy's where's the timing light??
Why such a tiny exhaust u just went thru that with us ?
I changed it to the merged. needed 1.5 inch. Dont go to big on the exhaust 1.5625 would make it fall on its face.
static time it before u start up!
yea we actually did a basic setting but some other stuff made us second guess it.
Built on just like this for my 70 bug, The main problem that I had was pinging
probably really lean.
Why no doghouse shroud?
its doghouse with a type 4 cooler as well.
@@Mikefngarage oh, I meant how it has the bigger shroud instead of the round one, but then again yours doesn't have dual carbs
Reset dist 180 out maybe
time for a cold one :)
sometime I wish I could drink you bet
2ltr?
What was the approx cost to rebuild an engine like this?
about 8 grand in a shop with all the 2 Litre parts. Parts are about 4 grand.
Putting my safety glasses on now let it rip
got the carb part yesterday new video coming today at 3 almost right cold start and some 6k raps.
It's going to run after 3 start is my guess as I paused the video to comment.
dang pretty close.
Are you running with electronic points? Good work guys!
yea the old new bosch ones are not like they used to be.
your motor will run
thank you
why are you jacking around with the distributor? set it correctly and start the engine before you burn out the stater.
we thought it was set correcty and it was. but when we had to jack with the fuel line it pulled the coil wire out. Sorry this is reality this is what happens when you are getting something to run sometimes. videoed it all and not hiding anything. Not HGTV here.
also happens even more when your trying to video it.
Sounds good you gotta spend some money on a set of nice headers that header is junk
Cant put much else in a bus without cutting out the apron. and I dont want to put a dent like that in the new header for the trailer hitch.
Sounds like the carburetor needs to be adjusted idle way too high
we had it on a fast idle for 20 minutes to break in the cam. yea there were some other carb issues. too. choke thermostat was bad and the accelerator pump bad out of the box. plus the fuel pump check valve stuck shut.
BRAAAAAAAAP!!!!!!1
I will be putting that up pretty soon got it close now on the stand.
Fuel or fire.........
would somebody please explain what that electric fan was supposed to do? This is an air-cooled engine, does not have a radiator, sucks in more air than that fan can ever produce.Looks to me that somebody tried to be a smart ass
keeps us cool lots of hot air coming out of that engine.
Put a kadron carb on it
2 barrel has longer intake provides more torque. going in a bus.
whoopy 50 hp maybe, if it doesnt shake apart.
runs perfect climbs hills like a bandit. probably get 150k miles out of this one.
your starting it without a oil filter?????????? I know they didnt come with them but your plumed for one.
Need gas ,compression and spark
while trying to get gas he knocked loose the coil wire. Stuff happens.
It's going to run gread
now thats my kind of answer thanks for that
You forgot the sauerkraut, everyone knows that a new VW engine will not start without breathing through a sauerkraut salad, just reminds it it is german and german engineering never fails!
dogs and kraut and dogs and kraut. ha ha
It going run because Mike built one before.
i like to pour some gas in da carb.--keep a towel to cover, when she blos!
No engine is bullet proof ......meanwhile at home I'm kicked back watching law and order
yea like bulleproofing a 6.0 navistar. it is not bulletproof but it is a loose term of a durable vw engine.
Put hand on top of Carby let it suck raw fuel for a second ....
Static time it ....!
its going to run blowup and get fixed and run again and be just fine. lol. why would it blow up anyway??? lol
I'm guessing this engine will start based on y'all's wisdom and knowledge...but we will see......now back to the video!
sure spent a lot of time aiming a timing light that doesn't flash. Cam & idle sound almost like a stock item.
flashes really dim. hard to see. One of the guys probably dropped it. one time is all it takes.
Battery will be run down with all the cranking.
I don't think it's going to start you're going to have to adjust something
no fuel but we put the timing way out because it wasnt starting.
@@mikesrandomvideos I had Rambus up to 95 when it burned a hole in the bottom of the left side of #4 . It had to much timing to do that?
lots of heat to get a bus to that speed. I 105 in the bug. I dont have the gonads to try that in my splitty. 80 was white knuckles
Why there's your problem....empi.
some empi parts are good some not. the accelerator pump is a not but it was the only one available without ordering.
To much eng sealer pistons are flooded with it
yea lots of problems all at the same time got him to second guess the timing took longer than expected. with the carb and fuel issues.
is that the empi 32/36 progressive car? are you having problems with getting full throttle when pulling on the cable? i have that same carb and noticed that i couldnt get full throttle. take a look at my video i mad a linkage for this carb. ruclips.net/video/wmcgwLO5duA/видео.html
It is just hard to push the pedal but I think we got it worked out would love to see that video Will check. it is the older real webber version smaller than the 32/36
Mike Fn Garage
That engine sounds strong great job
frightening....
Lol
Wait ::: did you install head to intake gaskets? Keep cranking!!
Swap cyl wires 7 & 5 that should help!
With all that starting fluid you could drop that on Hiroshima Japan!
I think it’s the battery ( add jumper cables)!
Try a As seen on tv start. (Have your buddy come work on it for 5 days off camera and then say look first try!!! Ooh wait too late for that! Lol
This is fun!
Is this a training video on all the ways you can’t start a vw? Lol now back to cranking. Whoops not the pump either!
This is engine abuse!!
