This is one of the best performances of the William Tell Overture I have ever heard. I first heard this piece at about age 12 in 1958 (of course back then our only exposure to classical music was the theme song for The Lone Ranger) and was lulled to sleep during the first 11:10 min. until the finale, then all us kids knew exactly what the piece was. How exciting to hear it over and over. Thank you.
My favorite has always been the one performed by the Berlin Philharmonic in the mid 90's with Claudio Abbado. It is only the part from the 9:00 mark here on but it is awesome.
I love listening to various high school orchestras doing this, but every once and awhile you have to come to something like this to be completely blown away
Rossini was the first great modern entertainer. He understood the ever evolving audience the way Tchaikovsky later also did. They remain the two most entertaining of the pre-20th century great masters.
In what way is he disheveled? It's certainly not with respect to his dress. Or could it be that you're referring to his directorial approach, and your need to play the pseudo-erudite, pseudo-classical musical aficionado.
Section 1: Prelude/ Dawn 3:00-6:19 Section 2: Storm 6:20-8:39 Section 3: Ranz des vaches/Call To The Cows 8:40-11:15 Section 4: March of the Swiss Soldiers/Finale 11:16-14:16
Bravo Sandro!!
Appello agli italiani: perlomeno in italiano chiamiamolo "violoncello".
Yes - Gergiev famously conducts with his hands only, and is sometimes criticised for eschewing the baton. As a response, he took to conducting with the smallest possible baton, a tooth pick
In her defense the BBC Proms concerts are broadcast on TV to a very wide audience, much of which may not know much about classical music; therefore introductory comments might be helpful for such a wide audience.

10 out of 10.

Cercati l’Overture diretta da Toscanini e poi saprai dirmi?
I love listening to various high school orchestras doing this, but every once and awhile you have to come to something like this to be completely blown away
Strings were electric!
The whole orchestra - brilliant.

I absolutely love the William Tell Overture by Rossini!!! This is grreat!!!
Oh, boy, do we/world need this for 2022... Play on, please, thank you
Rossini was the first great modern entertainer. He understood the ever evolving audience the way Tchaikovsky later also did. They remain the two most entertaining of the pre-20th century great masters.
Definitely agree. Who would you consider their counterparts post-20th Century?
I am blown away!!!! First tranquilized by the beauty then smashed by the power!
OMG, the trombonists must be robots!! The storm tempo is CRAZY!! 7:07

Too fast.
1st piece of music I ever heard , at 6 , scared me , but I loved it , played it over and over .
ROSSINI WAS VERY GENIUS
Direttore spettinato ma bravissimo. Orchestrali bravissimi. Cello perfetto.
In what way is he disheveled? It's certainly not with respect to his dress. Or could it be that you're referring to his directorial approach, and your need to play the pseudo-erudite, pseudo-classical musical aficionado.
Meraviglioso !

Appello agli italiani: perlomeno in italiano chiamiamolo "violoncello".

Awesome version; quickness with melody being brought out fully; usually it seems, in my opinion, often there is a trade off between these
BRAVO!!!
Complimenti.Bellissimo il solo di violoncello.

Per semplicità ... SUBLIME !!!
L’esplosione del minuto 7:07 è fantastica!!
La obertura de Tell es sencillamente impresionante.
Bravo Sandro!
2:50 to skip the woman babbling about nothing
BRAVO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Everyone loves the finale, but personally I find the flute/oboe (cor anglais?) duet just before even more beautiful
but the finale isn't meant to be beautiful
They play it so beautifully
11:15 is probably what you're looking for :)
Esto es maravilloso!
Mr. Rossini ringrazia.....
Ladies and Gentlemen the James Brown of Conducting.
The Price is Right game Hurdles.
Grande Sandro!!!
The music possessed the conductor
Excellent
Well played, but I feel like I'm in a race.
11:30 the chase music.
muy buena (Y)
A beautiful piece brilliantly conducted. Not that is matters, but what is Maestro Gergiev using to conduct? A toothpick?
Acme No 5 toothpicks, when only the best will do.
after Toscanini
@@antoninomarullo8468 of course
Gergiev is holding a toothpick?? Gergiev just finished his dinner probably...
perfektní
is the conductor using a toothpick ?!?!
Awesome

Tony Bidwell good for you. For i have been searching for this song for years, finally found it.
Is that guy conducting with a toothpick??
What is going on? The cameraman is seriously undercranking for nearly a whole minute starting at 7:00. ;-)
Why does't that woman shut up?!?

Hi yo silver away!
Why he is using a toothpick?

Gergiev is not a conductor, but a lackey in power!
The intro is very long an is the conductor holding a tooth pick ???
Yes - Gergiev famously conducts with his hands only, and is sometimes criticised for eschewing the baton. As a response, he took to conducting with the smallest possible baton, a tooth pick
Working within Doing
Thought she would never shut up. Great tune
7:23 --> "La civilisation !"
Georg Solti :gee-ooh soh-tee
Small bobble for english horn player at 10:19. Otherwise, impeccable.performance.
Virtually everyone in the comment section is a classical music "expert." Don't waste your time.
That's a some tempo at the end.
Is the concert master Rainer Küchl ?
Yes he was!
Always someone coughing throughout...
11:16
who is first cello?
11:17
11:16
Conducting with a toothpick, uber star
2:59-14:17
Could you please cut the introduction? It's very distracting! In classical music, we don't need any intro. What counts is the music.
In her defense the BBC Proms concerts are broadcast on TV to a very wide audience, much of which may not know much about classical music; therefore introductory comments might be helpful for such a wide audience.
First piece could easily have been by Bruch.
