This album is about growing up, the trials and tribulations that come with it, and the self-esteem issues that we carry through to adulthood. But primarily, it’s about hope. The hope that we have it in us to rise above adversity, and the strength to help carry those who sink. I really hope you enjoy listening to it as much as we enjoyed making it.
Big love, Sam.❤

I remember the sickness was forever
I remember snuff videos
Cold Septembers, the distances we covered
The fist fights on the beach, the bizzies round us up
Do it all again next week
Embryonic love
The first time that it scarred
Embarrass yourself for someone
Crying like a child
And the boy who kicked Tom’s head in
Still bugs me now
That’s the thing it lingers
And claws you when you’re down
I was far too scared to hit him
But I would hit him in a heartbeat now
That’s the thing with anger
It begs to stick around
So it can fleece you of your beauty
And leave you spent with nowt to offer
It makes you hurt the ones who love you
You hurt them like they’re nothing
See I spent my teens enraged
Spiralling in silence
And arm myself with a grin
Cos I was always the fuckin’ joker
Buried in the humour
Amongst the white noise and boys’ boys
Locker room talkin’ lads’ lads
Drenched in cheap drink and snide fags
A mirrored picture of my old man
Oh god the kid’s a dab hand
Canny chanter but he looks sad
God, the kid looks so sad
She said the debt, the debt, the debt
So I thought about shifting gear
And how she wept and wept and wept
Luck came and died round here
I see my mother
The DWP see a number
She cries on the floor encumbered
I’m seventeen going under

The lyrics are astonishing, they're so deep and personal yet relatable.
it always amazes me when music artists can talk about deep issues whilst the music is upbeat, beautiful contrast
Very relatable

58 year old average guy here, a father, a recent grandfather and husband, consider myself a well balanced good man, but the unreconciled scars from my teenage years still cause negative feelings in me now - I've heard this song at work many times and I recognised myself in the lyrics. Had to come here to say, well done Sam, great song lad! Sorry to say, it DOES stick around!!
Unbelievable tune. 41 years old and I thought British music was dead. Keep it up Sam lad! This songs got the lyrics, the drums, the guitar, the sax, the lot! It's a fuckin beast of a tune!
I'm 59 and agree
Beast of a tune
Huge talent
41 years old and german, feeling it the same way... many greetings Christian
The more I listen to it the better it gets tbh. I walked 3 miles to open up my warehouse down south at 4am with this on repeat singing my fuckin head off with no-one around. I've commuted 4.5 hours back up North, had a big fat joint and this boyo has released one of the best songs by a British artist in fuck knows how long and I listen to everything. Every week, every month it's my obsession but this tune and lyrically and passionately is off the Richter scale. I'm sure the album will be amazing but this song hopefully will become and should be a classic in the great pantheon of All time british songs alone. Its unreal
Damn, im 17 here and i love the song. And you right, its a fucking banger. I love the emotion behind it and the story it tells too. Just the little things that make it a real tune.
@@garrygarryson520 I see my mother, the dwp see a number is an unbelievable line. It's a genius song. I hope it gets recognised over the coming years as one of the Best British songs and a classic. It's off the Richter scale this song the young lads written and hes got loads in his locker, what a talent. His new song Aye is quite something aswell
God I resonate deeply with “I was far to scared to hit him, but I would hit him in a heartbeat now”, cause it reminds me of my “father”. He was abusive and used fear to control us but now that I’m 20, not 6 or even 10, god I would knock his damn lights in now no hesitation. I guess the lyrics are right “That’s the thing with anger, it’s begs to stick around”
I hear you
:,-)
I made a similar comment on the official music video on Sam's page. When you're from an abusive background you just "get it" 👍
Knock him out pal I've done it best feeling ever hitting abuse dad loved hitting him
@@garethemmett9353 Don't lie to yourself buddy, you didn't enjoy it at all.
"And the boy who kicked Tom's head in

"And I armed myself with a grin
'Cause I was always the f' joker
Buried in their humor
Amongst the white noise and boys boys" Sam's songwriting is genius. A total narrative of life growing up North I can totally relate! Got my ticket I can't f wait for the tour!!
I feel a Bruce Springsteen vibe in this song. It’s honestly opened a whole can of emotions for me I think we can all remember being seventeen and feeling we were going under. Made me appreciate being past it and still alive.
HUGE Springsteen vibes
In all his music if you haven’t noticed before
Ya
First thought when I heard Sam Fender.
I agree 100% with the Springsteen vibes. Keep cranking them out Sam!
Love the line…”I was far to scared to hit him. But I’d hit him in a heartbeat now!!…👌👌
There's a few people who I think about from my past who I regretted not hitting
me too
@@markdickens968 nah beat them with your success and happiness
@@markdickens968 All though I was never one to shy away from a fight
The emotional intensity of this song is off the scale. He is bearing his soul with all pain he has endured. It is both revealing and very painful yet the song incredibility takes you to a better place, Pure God given talent in action.!!
A young jimmy.nail.but god he's awesome toon toon this man's far better then shed sherron
Nicely said awsome song 👍

Not a day goes by without listening to this young man in my car on my way to work. A real discovery for me. This music gets me trough the day. Singing along sometimes with tears in the eyes. Love this music.
Class isn’t he

Omfg..😭💖🤘✌- that^^ is exactlyy why I am a songwriter.. Like.. f being an accountant or other whatnot 😝 I mean, did some job, get somebody ~through their day~ ?!?! No, the musicians and other entertainers do! 👌👏🎉 The songs we musicians write & play, are what people turn on in their room, their car, or at work..so they can keep breathing & not go insane 😝💜💖🤘
Hes a great talent ❤
go on sam, one of the fucking best tunes i’ve heard in a long time
Literally the biggest talent we have seen in a long time. Listening on repeat. Can relate to everything Sam says.
Awesome sound! Fresh and vibrant. This is what the charts need these days
YES
Need more guitars back in this industry
for sure man
"The DWP see a number" hits so fucking hard
Pair it with Civil Servant by Richard Dawson...
What's dwp?
Great line. I worked in a Jobcentre if you treated someone as a number. You would have been sacked. Honest.
@@MrStrengthz Department of Work and Pensions,
24 hours ago I knew this lad was a singer from Newcastle, that’s it never listened to his songs till now. This music resonates with almost every northern, working class, poor family. 👏
We are proud of the lad up here. Unlike Sting he speaks for all of us.
And Southern/Kent

Genius lad speaking for a lot of angry young men.
The album is going to slap. Been following his Facebook stories all through lockdown and there’s some great stuff that’ll hopefully be coming out with it

some of the best lyrics I've ever heard, almost moved me to tears
Love that accent lends pure authenticity to the emotions of the song.....am seventy but it awakens my memories......timeless brilliance. Well done Sam.....you don't sound like anybody else to me you are genuinely unique and an amazing talent!
“That’s the thing with anger it begs to stick around, so it can fleece you of your beauty” that was deep..
Brings back a wave of emotion from that time... simply one of the best songs I've listened to in a long time. Keep it up Sam, and please come I Ireland and I'll pay to see you in a heartbeat!!!
This is the best song I've heard this year. Can't wait for the album.
What a talent! Awesome!
@@jimcookson5189 How old is he ?..
I'm from the North East, Stockton. Never confuse the North East with the North. It's far harder to emerge from our neck of the woods and achieve something incredible like Sam has. I'm super biased but fuck me - what a talent!! Sam Fender is a genuine throwback rock star who makes folk proud to be from a region that hasn't had too many heroes for a while. He even sings in his own accent! And as for that beautiful yet powerful voice - it's like Jeff Buckley's been reincarnated!!
Aye, plenty of good music came out of the North East, sadly having to leave it, to do so.
Just excellent listening to these lyrics. How many young men and fellas this resonates with is unreal.
Pleased with music he found his way and still enjoys a few beers with the lads.
Im 69 and this is the future of music, it happened once in '71 Rod,'76 Bruce, 2020 Sam ,bloody magic an oasis from crap manufactured Xfactor voice enhanced rubbish ,well done Sam and the band
A master wordsmith... staggeringly good lyrics! Anyone who's ever struggled to find their place in the world as a teenager will connect
Proper f'n good video 🔥
Borders was the best song of 2019 and this is the best song of 2021 (so far).
Couldn’t agree more👍🏻
This song makes me super sad and I don’t know why….
Absolute Poetry Sam.
The beat got me hooked and the need to understand the meaning of a great song brought me here. Greetings from down under Sam. Cheers mate 👍
Great lyrics. A very poor Welsh valley boy in the sixties has clicked with this song . Powerfull yet the music takes you to another happy place . Brought back memories . Keep going Sam. Best luck butt from Wales.
Awesome tune. IMO, best UK male singer songwriter since Ian Brown.
I'm 103 now and I can barely remember yesterday or when I last used the toilet but this song brings me right back to when I was 12....
Finally someone who can actually write good music.
I love this song, incredible how it makes me feel ❤️
This is the best song ive heard in the last 15 years by a mile!
I love it man !! A young, real song writer, that's in the main charts... Like a charts version of Gerry Cinnamon, with the raw & real setting, of the well crafted lyrics... Go on Sam la !! 🙏🏻☝🏻✊🏻🎤🎵🎶😎
Absolutely love this track love the fact he has kept his routes with his geordie dialect aswell class
Sam Fender so amazing. It is like Oasis when they came out. Generation music.
Mate!!!!! At last, at bloody last. Sings in his own accent not some quasi transatlantic crap sound. Lyrics, amazing. Every working class lads experience. A cliché to say "he's singing my life" OK, cliché it is. I've not heard anything this good since elvis costello in 1977.oh,and thanks to Ken Bruce for playing it on radio two ✌️
I must have been living under a rock but just heard this and thought it was a song I hadn't heard from the 80s, then I googled it and I've been listening on repeat, it's amazing! There's something about it that just gets you in the guts! , i just love when a song does this for you, just brilliant, I'm a North East girl myself and proud to call Sam one of our own, love it❤️
This was literally my teenage years, it's amaZing how many people feel the same, I still carry so much of those years with me, bad and good, literally a song for a while generation of people that grew up in this country, thank you for making this lad
Every lines feel like chorus 🙌🏻 well done guys!
Every line is a damn masterpiece, what a song
I heard this song just yesterday & got me thinking abt my own life what a talent Sam fender truly is I was once 17 & going under 👍🔥❤
Lyrics are so true
“See I spent my teens enraged,
Spiraling in silence,
And armed myself with a grin
Cause I was always the fuckin joker”
Makes me feel like I got punched in the throat. Jesus
I fucking LOVE this song.
“I remember the sickness was forever”
Kinda like this covid can’t get rid of it
Past events do haunt us, very true, PTSD is real and takes many severities and forms ❤️
but just to clarify the boy who kicked toms head in sounds like maybe unless tom was assaulted unprovoked ya definatley jump in and murder the dude but lets be honest normally if a guy kicks anothers guys head in ... im not trying to be disrespectful but was tom talking when he should have been listening ? thats the real world just nobody knows about what poor tom was at and he might have deserved every bit of it just saying .... lyrics paint a picture of am i didnt jump in and id kill him now but they never say why tom got a hiding anyway class track my favourite hard to get sick of this one ... headphones a few beers and this really loud with bass tweaked up a bit is i have to say the best track ive heard in a long long time .....just so sorry i didnt have a front row listening to this live with a nice crowd it would be unforgettable up there with the best no joke
The DWP see a number , she cried on the floor encumbered, WOW! powerful lyrics
Wow what a fucking pure amazing talent. RESPECT XXXXXX 💙🇬🇧
Fab song. Lyrics are sensational.
Takes me back to my first marriage then second. Both the same as each other.
Wish I had the courage to do all that.
The words ring true but for me it was the dog he kicked.
Bring tears to my eyes when I hear this.
The guitar playing it absolutely 💯.

The lyrics are as relavent to anyone growing in the 1980's as today, such talent
8th of october is going to be a madness
This young band has a great future in music history. Jim Fender is some kind of song writer. Bright future! Now the the band in whole is outstanding. The music touches one's soul and heart. Good luck in the future!!
DWP got a number !!! NO ONE WILL GET THAT TILL IT'S THEM !!
God the kid looks so.sad 🎶

Unbelievable lyrics. Absolutely brilliant
A real musical talent has finally come along, old school if ever I heard it
Great song I must say 👌👍
This is my life growing up.
Genius 👍❤️🎸🎸💯
I love this song. (Just to say, I'm 75 😁)
I love that your accent comes through.
Me too! Courtesy of my granddaughter - so talented
Nah i cannot wait for this album his lyrics never disappoint
Can’t wait to be belting this out at Leeds
Listened to it a few times now and I'm starting to herald the opinion that this is his best song (so far). Don't get me wrong, Hypersonic Missiles has an awesome chorus and is very catchy but the lyrics in this song are better. It's more personal and rooted in the real and the everyday. He's growing into a more mature and confident lyricist. Very excited to hear the new album next month!
F**kin love it!!! What a song and what a talented young lad, hope fame and fortune doesn't change him, working class lad from the TOON, he deserves that path to glory👏👏💎
The fact that I found this right after my 18th birthday
For every One Direction there is a Sam Fender. And we thank him
Move over dated crap music, Sams the man from now on
I'm 51 and uterlly love this song, it's been in my head all day. Thanks Sam, keep up the tunes. X
How is he not over 1 million subscribers... Come on guys smash that red button.. Amazing talented artist 🎸
I remember times of uncertainty, hunger, cold, pain in my bones, and still I kept on my feet, with my madness in tow, and I found in those moments some love, some company, and some light... .and I was still alive... I still am. Thank Life for this.
Beautifully written. I'm glad you are. I'm glad I am too.
Oh wow
Now I loved this song From the 1st time I heard it, but reading the lyrics just certified Sam fender as the greatest artist out there ❤️🔥🎸🔥❤️
I heard this for the first time on Saturday on Ant & Dec's take away , best track I've heard for a long time . Such powerful lyrics , Sam I hope you there's many albums ahead for you & your band your awesome , sending love from Wales 💕

What incredibly sincere talent this man has
he is amazing my favourite song 🎵 ❤ xx
Springsteen vibes, really like this lad :)
I don't know if anyone thinks the same. But the Saxophone gives each song a unique style. I love how it sounds.
By far my fave song of 2021
Played it about a million times!! 👍😎😂
Did you see him at Glastonbury festival 2022, the other day ?..
“I was far to scared to hit him. But I would hit him in a heartbeat now.”
I've been listening to this song so much the last few weeks. Always fires me up.
Gotta be song of the year 💕
Love it has so many north east words in it 🔥🤘
Absolutely amazing the lyrics are so bitter sweet and heart breaking
BRING on the new album
“I was too scared to hit him, but I would hit him in a heartbeat now. That’s the thing with anger it begs to stick around” growing up rough and going through stuff at school with fighting etc I really felt the truth in those lyrics!
Wow. I'm just hearing this mans music now. Each line is a killer. Springsteen, Orbison....so many greats I can hear in his voice & he brings South Shields in like I've never heard before. Got tickets to finsbury park. Can not wait ❤
North sheilds
Love it what a banger
Honestly this song comes off as a mature, masculine version of Lorde’s music. I could see her making similar music to this once she matures and hits her late 20’s/early 30’s.
