We buried my beautiful best friend Pauline to this song, she loved it. We walked behind her coffin and all I could remember was her singing was this song…, Pauline is never forgotten ❤⭐️⭐️⭐️
I didn't know for the longest time that he says "And I love you, man" at 3:35... I thought it was "I'm a lucky man." It seems at varying intervals he is talking to a lover ("I watch you look at me, watch my fever grow"), himself (But how many corners do I have to turn?), and then - at the end, in this line - perhaps a friend, too. I'm 33 years old. My uncle introduced me to the verve when I was a little man. He passed away last year and everytime I hear the verve I get a lump in my throat. RIP uncle Brian ❤❤❤
This was played at the wake for a friend and classmate of ours, who was left us too early in 1999. We had just completed our first semester of college. I can’t believe it’s been 25 years. We are all lucky in some way - make the most of your time here!
My father died yesterday and as I driving thinking about it all this song came to my mind. I decided to play it and cried tears because I am lucky. I know he would want me to carry on being the best man I can be. I guess it was a gift from him a last gift
wow, my father died yesterday (yes really) a long way away in China...he lived his life to the full to the end and said how lucky he was. I'm crying now, but good tears for him and this great song hits the mark so, so well.
My friend played this song at my partners funeral. It was only a few weeks ago so still very raw. He always said that he wanted this song played at his funeral because he never took anything for granted & really felt like a lucky man. He knew what was important in life
I have always thought this message in this song is powerful, but found much strength in it when wife wife divorced me this spring. I found music to be an inspiration to move on with my life. So I decided to hit the road seeing parts of the U.S., flying solo during this COVID thing. Thanks guys for providing the tunes that make a difference.
I went through a divorce. At the time I didn’t understand why. Years later I found out why. My destiny was much larger than I could understand then. I am a lucky man. Please stay strong. Look inside and figure out what makes you happy. Then go after it with everything you have.
Spent the nineties as a workaholic. Listened to very little music but now that life is a bit more voluntary than mandatory, I’ve stumbled upon the incredible music of that decade. Please accept my belated thank you!
I now. But isn't is strange. This is why I don't now why we are in conrtol ot our our own Girls- The wankers called "Coldplay" becaume mega famous and even the stupid that mike that made candles smelling of her own vagina. Let me tell you love, we love love you foerever, but you effing stink down there. We ;Men don't. You see we Boys dont have an an opening that secretes stinsky blood and white fluids all day long. That never happens to us boys. But we still Love you.
This IS a masterpiece of the 90's. To all of those folks that said this music "wouldn't last". Just Iconic.. still brings the chills to me. Love this tune.
I can't help but cry or feel watering my eyes while listening to it. This always moves me deeply cause it is and forever will be one of the best songs someone has ever written, it seems so made for me. The voice of Richard Ashcroft has for sure something that can reach your soul. thanks life. thanks The Verve. thanks to anyone out there that, just like me right now, is listening this absolute and timeless jem. we are lucky men. indeed.
I am 46 year old white guy from US. I grew up listening mostly to hip hop and rnb from the late 80s into the late 90s but I also have always had an affinity for British soul and rock. When I first heard this and Bittersweet Symphony in 97 I was blown away. Verve quickly became my favorite group. My other story about this beautiful song is that when I had my son in 2012, whenever I’d hold him as a newborn, this song would always come to me. My son is now 12. He’s autistic-he Ms sweet, smart, funny, and handsome. I also have 9 year old daughter who is a beautiful soul. I am truly a Lucky Man ❤
As much notoriety Bittersweet Symphony received (and deserved) at the time, this song is their magnum opus in my opinion. Just classic from the first note until the last. One of my favorite 90s songs. Timeless. 🙌
Why notoriety? I agree that this is song is their best, but Bittersweet Symphony is a classic. If you're referring to the copyright drama, The Verve got the raw end of the deal in all of that nonsense. They did nothing wrong. They simply cleared the 'Master Rights' to the song but forgot to clear the 'Publishing Rights.' Just poor lawyering. That's all it was. A simple legal oversight. They had previously received permission from the Stones. So the Verve should have received all the royalties from the outset. The story has a happy ending, though (albeit a belated one). Several years ago, Mick and Keith started sending all the royalties to Ashcroft and stopped claiming any rights to the sample.
@@Bravetrain13 Maybe, but he said "notoriety." Notoriety and popularity have totally different connotations (notoriety, of course, is characterized by recognition that is specifically unfavorable). Why would bittersweet symphony be thought of as notorious? It must be because of the legal battle, no? What other reason is there?
life is difficult but there's so many things we can be thankful for. love to everyone reading this. you have no idea how strong you are, you can overcome the pain plaguing you. we can all be grateful for what we have. love you all❤️❤️

I know that feeling, the 90’s what an amazing decade. I wish I could go back and tell myself to savour every last second as your life is gonna turn to shit when you hit 40.
I just rewatched "The Girl Next Door" in which there was this wonderful song that I hadn't heard in a long time, and I immediately came here. Hearing The Verve makes me feel good about myself and I feel like I could do anything, thank you for your masterpieces ♥️♥️♥️♥️

Hey you might like a band called The Doublejumps if you like The Verve. Different styles but similar influences it sounds like. Two of my favourite artists, both kind of remind me of The Beatles
I can't say this of to many songs, there comes only to mind "Bitter Sweet Symphony" by Ashcroft, "Love Song" by The Cure and "I Could Have Lied" by the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
"Happiness something in my own place, I'm stood here naked, I smile and I feel no disgrace with who I am." What a talent to make genuine music a man can grow old with.
I have been thru some very hard times. Watching my dad OD. on dope. And my struggles with heroin addiction. But this song just reminds how lucky I am to still be alive and everything is gonna be alright.
It's funny because I just returned to this song to reflect on the good times shared with my childhood best friend who died this week from heroin related causes. He was 34. He was exceptionally dialed into the nature of being present, which is why we connect so strongly, but he's gone. Leave your addiction, fully and completely, as not something that you'll ever allow yourself to be ashamed of but rather of something that you feel empowered by to degrees that most will never understand but which will empower you to stay clean while immersed in the juice of life that is only offered through the experience of rejuvenation of those who desire a better conclusion to this game of life.
+Christopher Burke sorry for your loss. You always here about celebrities ODing. But you never hear about the thousands of average joe's. Thanks for your kind words.
Along with Grunge right before it was a great compliment! Musically was the best decade, since the 60’s in my opinion! The 70’s and 80’s had some great gems, and music in general (especially 80’s), but the 60’s and 90’s were the best!! The 50’s were in their own league of greatness, but hard to compare in this way.
Arrived in London from Kenya and as a GenX, I'm so lucky to have had the Verve as soundtrack of my life in the 90s along with my fav rnb, hiphop, african artists etc. Happy days❤
67 year old discovering Verve for the first time, must have missed their hey day when I was overseas working in Papua New Guinea. Very well put together song. I will explore more.
I'll tell you what. I just can't get enough of this song. There's got to be something else pushing me to feel like I do when I hear this amazing beautiful song. This band has no idea what the affect they have on people. I'm so glad I'm one of them truly amazing in thank you for leading the way
lBefore you can put one foot in front of the other. . You have to let go of the pain and lay it at JESUS feet. You have to forgive the people who have hurt you. And you have to forgive yourself. You want to become better than you are you have to make a stand in what's right and you have to hold JESUS hand and never let go. I look back now and see things that have had to happen in order tfor me to get where I am in my spirit and it took careing and loveing people to show you thing you did not no I feel like I'm whole Gain
I'd be honored if some Verve & Ashcroft fans would take a listen to my acoustic piano & vocal performances of BITTERSWEET SYMPHONY and HIGH & DRY by Radiohead on my YT channel in tribute to 2 of the greatest 90s bands. Live acoustic with no autotune. Thanks and peace out.
Was 16 when this was released in 97. Still a magic melody packed full of memories. At 41 now I can't explain what I feel other than I enjoy hearing the beautiful song again.
This is the most uplifting song ever written. I guess many people can reflect at one point in their life, and see, how many times they were just lucky. At 17, I could have been crushed by a ten ton load, I pulled with my tractor, when the brakes malfunctioned on a steep hill. Lucky for me a farmer sowing his field nearby saw, what happened, jumped without regard to his own life, down from his tractor, sprinted 50 yards toward my ever faster going tractor trailer, jumped onto the trailer and pulled the hand brake. Another time I was run over on my bike from a pickup truck, flew 6 yards through the air and landed with my head and upper body on a patch of grass, my head one foot away from a steel fence with concrete foundation, to the left one foot away a concrete electric post and to my right a tree. My hip smashed on the curb stone, but was cushioned by a thick H-D wallet. I only broke two rips and could drive myself to the hospital. But maybe it all has a purpose, because I could save 5 lives after my first encounter with death.
As we age, feelings and emotions that were once so brilliant fade away and leave us with nothing more than a memory of what we remember feeling. It's cruel, but a beautiful reminder of what once was, and possibly could be again if in the right situations. The hard part is finding those moments and living in them.
Something about their music touches my soul and really gets to the bottom of the way I sometimes feel..they are a deep emotional band and I love how his voice carries the words..
whenever I go through some emotional or depressive stages, I remember this song and it just awakens in me some beautiful memories, and restores my happiness. thanks to The Verve for existing!
In a sense I agree with you. A small flower or even a beetle has immense meaning, and does not seem complex ... though compared to the most complex piece of stone it is. But this song has its complexity, not least the notion of lucky, which might easily be substituted for blessed. In fact, various people have interpreted the song in various ways (including some that are quite straightforwardly sexual!) But I think it DOES have shades or meaning or layers of meaning. Either way I of course love it, but then I think about the ultimate source of all love and truth everywhere, which is one; or maybe three in one... This song inspires love, and - in my honest opinion - bad things cannot and do not readily come from it. That's precious.
I’m a big verve fan, heard this track 26 years ago and it lifted the hairs on the back of my neck and still has the same effect 26 years on. Amazing tune love it 😍
My partner of 25 years, father of my 2 beautiful children passed away peacefully last night and he always said this was the song he wanted played at funeral because he said he was a very lucky man
Well, there were 2 or 3 parts. The early 90s as overhang from 1985 onwards with REM , Stone Roses, James, Charlatans. British indie really made a mark, if mainly at home. Then 1994 when, apart from Oasis, the southerners struck back but in a retro way - Suede, Blur. Then, 1995, and Pulp and Radiohead start to burst the Britpop party before its supposed golden year ( which was actually a relatively dry 90s year for classic albums), 1996.Then once The Verve released Urban Hymns, Radiohead released OK Computer, and Oasis released the underrated Be Here Now, all in 1997, there'd never be that crescendo again (and it was a beautifully magical, epic, time, before many outside of university had the internet too). Lesser talents such as Travis and Coldplay were having wild success by rather cynically copying Radiohead's chin stroking, but instead convincing the average uncool guy 'You're special because you don't act like anything is more special than your beige existence'.
Thank you so much for the song "Luck Man" I was watching the movie "The Girl next door" when this song played. I traveled in time ... I came back 15 years ago. Rediscover a lot of myself that I had forgotten .. Good memories and good old friends. I was happy at that time and that song was part of my life. Rediscovering this song, brought back a lot of things that were lost in me ... Thank you... You have marked my life forever ..... 😢 ♥ ️🍃 ....
"The first time I ever heard this was in a truck stop bathroom somewhere in central Illinois. I'll never forget that trip and this song totally puts me back there." Okay, UPDATE: Since a few people wanted to know about my above comment from four months ago, this road trip was taken in October of 2014 with one of my good friends who was getting over the loss of another friend. For personal reasons, I am not going to give out his name. But, he called me out of the blue the day before and asked if we could just drive somewhere. His best friend from high school had committed suicide a few months before and he was really struggling with life and the loss. He picked me up on a Friday and we drove all night, ending up somewhere near Mazon, Illinois. We stopped at a Pilot truck station along the way for a break around 2AM and while washing my hands, I heard this over the PA and was mesmerized. Somehow, this song fit the situation perfectly. Both of us were struggling with the trials of life and yet, it made us realize we were both lucky men - still alive, fighting, even though things were tough. It made me appreciate the fact I had good friends and that I could be there for another person struggling with a loss. It's funny how music can do that. My friend and I both have a passion for railroads and ended up stargazing, attempting to solve the problems of the world, and watching freight trains roll through the night amongst open corn fields. A year later and every time I hear this, I go right back to that moment and think of where I was going and what life was like at that time.
Happiness is a state. It is within us, just like love. The Verve sings it with mastery in this beautiful song. For me, they were the best britpop band of the '90s. And they're missing!
Wellingta Macêdo exactly...from what I read and heard, their manager totally screwed them big time. I think they're broke . But I loved a lot of their music.
There is only one enemy. Let's see things differently. Everything is Energy. Life is a Journey, Not a Destination. Spirits in the material world. I'm a lucky man with fire in my hands. God bless.

80s for me. What you hear when you are in that stage of your life is imprinted in your memories of all the new and meaningful experiences you were having at the time. Different songs bring back a different set of memories.
I used to feel this way, David. But then I was Born Again thanks be to the Holy Spirit of Truth and Love and I realised that such songs as this help us understand the transcending wonder of the love and mercy God has for us. And then, as Jesus wants, we see that NOW is the most important time, including the now in which I wtite to you. Nostalgia is OK in its place, but now is the time you can change something - love more, forgive more, sin less, judge and condemn less - all the things Jesus taught us and the beloved Paraclete is wsiting and longing to help us with, in the middle of this often-rotten and evil-filled world. But we can be of God if we choose, and it starts this moment, if we say yes to it. I did and now I see more and love more and know more.... What's not to like?
@@_FiDeLCAsTrO_ Thanks for saying the words are perfect; and let them apply wherever they may! I am not a priest, though I am fortunate to be influenced by several great members of the clergy, both Catholic and Anglican. The church is not perfect as either a place or an inatitution, and the Holy Spirit paid me a visit while I was in my own bedroom, not In a church...
David yes the good old days but when I listen it makes the good old days now days. I get lost in it and realize I'm still here and so is this fantastic song
If you can't find happiness in yourself, don't seek it in others. This song is a shining light. Sometimes we seek the light when we carry the dark. Keep trying and one day the light will find you.
It was a sunny day of 1997 when the clock-radio woke me up with this beautiful song. Made my day, following months, years, and to this day it's still the first thing I listen to when I wake up.
I'm listening to this as a woman in my 40's and thinking I'm a 'lucky woman' not to only have a man who makes me feel this way but also to be be here after this tragic year x
Music can be so profound. Here we have a group that is not new and yet, what they created is as timeless as time itself. I learned a very long time ago, if you cry when you here a song for the very first time, it shall remain in your soul for life and that every time you hear it from that point on, you will remember exactly where you were. A sort of time machine as it were. I love this group, their music and the words. Just beyond anything I have ever heard in my life and yes.........I still cry when I listen to this beautiful song.💖 Thank God for such artist📀📼🎧🎤🎵🎻🎼🎹🎸
More than a bittersweet symphony, I just love this song. Timeless.

Spent the nineties as a workaholic. Listened to very little music but now that life is a bit more voluntary than mandatory, I’ve stumbled upon the incredible music of that decade. Please accept my belated thank you!

Songs like this gave back then and maybe provide inspiration that so much good music with lyrics produced mainly in the 1980's won't go wasted.

thanks The Verve.
thanks to anyone out there that, just like me right now, is listening this absolute and timeless jem.

I am truly a Lucky Man ❤
This is the kind of music that is so good that is literally medicine.
Absolutely... great medicine.

So true 👍
The drugs work in this case
@@danielwilliams173bro he just meant it was more popular. Nothing about legal copyrights 😂
Is it me? Or can I hear simple man kind of in this song a little? Sounds really close as well bittersweet mixed in at times?
My favorite Verve song

Crème cheese lad
As we age, feelings and emotions that were once so brilliant fade away and leave us with nothing more than a memory of what we remember feeling. It's cruel, but a beautiful reminder of what once was, and possibly could be again if in the right situations. The hard part is finding those moments and living in them.
Me too, and it's simply wonderful!!!

One of my favorite songs of all time!
One of the best songs ever written, i come back to it every few months and it still blows me away.
This song is simple but beautiful. Not everything needs to be complex in order for it to mean something.
Cuando vienes a Perú estoy ya e la cima de ver y verte Richard 😃

Yeah the 90's were great, if only we could go back to those days and know how great they really were....
The lead guitar under all this is epic beyond all proportions.
Nick McCabe is the most underrated shoegaze guitarist

"The first time I ever heard this was in a truck stop bathroom somewhere in central Illinois. I'll never forget that trip and this song totally puts me back there."
Okay, UPDATE:
Since a few people wanted to know about my above comment from four months ago, this road trip was taken in October of 2014 with one of my good friends who was getting over the loss of another friend.
+Delay In Block Productions ...ty for sharing this story. I hope friend is doing good.

What a great song! I can’t believe how many memories it brings back to me. I still long for the good old days.
@@sidpheasant7585''judge and condemn less'' Perfect words... to tell the church.
@@sidpheasant7585 Good for you if that's what makes you a better person.
David yes the good old days but when I listen it makes the good old days now days. I get lost in it and realize I'm still here and so is this fantastic song

Karla Gierer I literally cry for that sometimes.... best and worst times ever
From my home town legends

I'm a Fortunate Man to have Jesus in my life 🙏 🙌 😌 💯 ❤️ ✨️ 🙏 Much love, Robert Duggan 🌄
If you can't find happiness in yourself, don't seek it in others. This song is a shining light. Sometimes we seek the light when we carry the dark. Keep trying and one day the light will find you.
Basically the best advice you can ever give someone.
You are the light
As long as your looking for the light, you will find it x
Lightbulbs are nice
Amen sister❤
Earphones. My Office. Curtains open. Clear night. 2am. This song
It was a sunny day of 1997 when the clock-radio woke me up with this beautiful song. Made my day, following months, years, and to this day it's still the first thing I listen to when I wake up.
Best comment!
I was in Our Price in Epsom first time I heard this.
Absolutely brings me right back to 1997 , sitting in a park in Dublin
I’m a lucky man. 😢
Have gratitude, Be humble and you’ll find “happiness more or less.”
Cup half full, not empty 👍
One of those nostalgic songs that stays with you and never gets old no matter how many times you hear it.
Very true
Life can suck sometimes, I get depressed and wish I was more successful. But one listen of this and I'm good again.
viva anti enjoy.
Anytime my chicogo friend.
Present day girl who likes "The Verve", the world is very beautiful :)
I agree well said
Yes.
I'm listening to this as a woman in my 40's and thinking I'm a 'lucky woman' not to only have a man who makes me feel this way but also to be be here after this tragic year x
🏜🦅☕🥞🤙
Wish all women had this outlook on life , instead of must be 6 foot tall, funny, good job, loads of money.
Fair play 👍
Always Perfect
Prefer this to Bittersweet Symphony. Both are absolute classics, but this just hits me right in the feels every time.
what about "slide away"?
Bitter Sweet and this song are from the same Symphony.
Just beyond anything I have ever heard in my life and yes.........I still cry when I listen to this beautiful song.💖
Thank God for such artist📀📼🎧🎤🎵🎻🎼🎹🎸
Jack Ryan Well Said Sir!
