Back in 91, my father bought this CD when he travelled to US. He told us this was his song, to remember him everytime we hear this song. He died a few years later.
Today will mark 25 years since he died, and I never forgot him or this song.

31 years ago I bought my newborn son home from the hospital, this was the song playing when I switched MTV on, I sang the whole thing while feeding him. Now everytime I hear this song it reminds me of my firstborn son who is now a grown man with his own house, lovely memories x

That song describre so perfectly well how i feel. It is a very good description of the anxiety i feel. When i discovered the song, i was searching what i had. I wasn't able to tell what i feeled inside before discovering my anxiety disorder. i was litteraly loosing my religion. Feeling to always saying too much or not enough. Constantly staying awake to look at other reaction in fear. So powerfull and beautifull word.

REM was my dad favorite band my dad recently passed away and this band will mind me of him I love REM
I used to work in a bar in Russia, and we would play this song every time we were having a great shift. Always cheered everyone up, and this became a custom. Everyone would scream it along, and sing it when we were having drunk aftershift parties. Those days are long gone, but this song never fails to pick me up when I need it.

This song came on at work causing me to look it up. I remember this video so distinctly from my childhood. I was so young, but I remember disliking the way the symbols were put together, how they seemed to confront me, I disliked the idea of "losing my religion," I disliked the ambiguity of the lyrics. Still, I can remember being mesmerized and pulled in by the beauty of the music. I wonder if this was my first genuinely artistic experience.
The theateics in this is a masterpiece. So simple and uncimplicated..yet brilliantly complex and well thought out. They probably poured thousands, if not millions of dollars into the making of this video. How they made it simple and complex at the same time is amazing.
This is the kind of song that I randomly start singing and realize I don't know all the words but I can effectively mumble through a few words until I restart the part I do know and enter an unending lyric loop.

The line “oh no I’ve said too much, I haven’t said enough” is brilliant and expresses that conundrum between do I speak up (and upset people), or speak out (and try and change the world). As you get older, you learn to veer towards the latter, as I’d rather not stay silent whilst others do us harm. Speak up world. In words, actions and in music and it’s message.
