The use of saxophone is something refreshing in todays music... I liked that
Bruce did the same nearly 50 (50!) years ago. But I agree Sam Fender is one of the most interesting contemporary artists. A genius.
Played in bands with saxophonists. They’re high maintenance.
Yes refreshing. But not on nearly every one of his songs as he seems to do....
@@erwinboogaerts Dire Straits… mark knoffler influence
Its a Springsteen relic
"I see my Mother, The DWP see a number" such a simple, heartbreaking line, it knocks me out every time. I would say the most talented song writers there are would go their whole life without writing anything that holds as much of an emotional kick to the head as that one.
Feel the same way when I first heard the song, literally rewinded it about 10 times to hear it, so powerful
Agreed, I cried
That line hits hard been there went through that.
I agree with everything you have said here
@@mattbeevers1132 "seventeen going under..."
This is pure ecstasy. The song. The venue. The crowd. SAM FENDER ❤
I was in the crowd. Very thoughtful of you to describe me like that. Thank you.

@@joebell4013 ?? WTF are you his boyfriend or something?
I'm an old man of 73. This is the best thing I've seen since the Beatles. He's a poet.
Single handedly saving UK music - I can't think of anyone else that is having such an impact on young and older generations alike
Sir,.I'm 62 & feel the same way!
And you know your music 🎸👍🏻
I watched him live in Sydney and my god, it gives me chills to this day.
I'm 72and love it.😊
Had to play it 3 times tonight. This song will always be a belter and Im 65.
The best music is timeless and always relevant to any age.
Still a young pup
As a geordie you've no idea how amazing it feels to hear that London crowd singing 'canny chanter but he looks sad'. Get a bit choked up.
Innit mate. unreal. so proud we've got a Geordie up there
I'm irish and this hits me😂 monumental tune.
Soul poetry! It's fucking amazing!!
I had to look up what it meant from Dallas, Texas. Y’all have the real deal with this one. I’d be proud too.
@Fionn MacCuill canny chanter means good singer in geordie land :)
The crowd singing along is pure ecstasy
having a crowd scream those lyrics at the top of their lungs must be so fucking surreal. Not many artists nowadays can capture real and raw emotions like Sam does, and seeing so many people connect with this song is incredible. Absolute legend you are Sam ❤️
Everything you said. YES. I hope he realizes how good this song is.
Well said 👏👍🏼
Go to White Lies concert :) The same atmosphere
Exactly!
I really believe that this is one of the best songs ever written
I honestly fucking love this guy. Every song has meaning to him. He’s saved me in so many ways. Fucking top top geezer Sam 👌🏻
Know what you mean 👍🏻
Stop swearing lol heard him on ant and Dec I like him too now f off xxx
Bollock's
"God, the kid looks so sad" gives me goosebumps up and down my spine every time.
So right. The lyrical build-up to the title line is perfect beyond belief.
i can’t imagine how euphoric this was to see live, wow what a tune. a whole vibe bro.
I'm seeing him this weekend and this video has my heart rate actually speeding up watching it because I know it's going to be incredible live. I hope you get to see him play some time!
it was honestly the best concert i've been to
@@ah-ie9dy i’m so excited for you!
@@alexmcaleer6086 Couldn't agree more here, i was there and it was by a a a fair way the best gig ive ever seen
There aren't many songs that have a line like "I was far too scared to hit him, but I'd hit him in a heart beat now" that is so perfect that the audience immediately screams it out and Sam knows it's no longer his line. So great.
That is the defining line of this song for me. First time I heard the song "embryotic love" peaked my interest and "I'd hit him in a heart beat" completely sold me. What a fantastic song.
That line is him saying anger is not a good thing to keep inside you - "thats the thing with anger it begs to stick around".
He didn't hit the guy but still wishes he had and its eating away at him.
Basically he is saying don't let the past make you a bitter aggressive soul
That song does something to me, especially that line... I just started crying about a trauma I thougt i was over long ago...
They way he sings it too is so fucking amazing
and the lines 'I see my mother, the DWP see a number' are just fucking amazing
"That's the thing with anger. It begs to stick around." No doubt about it, one of the best lyrics ever written. So simple, so wise. It was the only line in the verses I caught and understood when i first started hearing it. It sums up the song so well. Highlights the theme perfectly. He says so much with so little. God damn. Sam Fender deep dive coming in hot.
The whole song is filled with great lines. I'm stunned with how packed it is.
Sam's smile when the crowd jumps the "oooooooouuuuuuooo" on the first breakdown is magical.
„I remember, sickness was forever“ - having survived severe depression just aged 22, I really feel this line. Sam, what a talent you are, this song really helped me go through it, life‘s good again.
Best wishes from Germany Lad
I hope you are doing well my friend, Sam is a legend
When people say new music is trash. . . This is a fucking masterpiece
"I was far too scared to hit him, but I would hit him in a heartbeat now" - Probably at least in the top ten lines of any song EVER!!
Never mind how amazing he sings and all his other amazing songs, and the range this guy has and the love the British public have for him now.
I mean "The DWP see a number" would probably be the best line for years without the above mentioned one. Fuckn amazing
Quite simply one of the best songs I’ve ever heard in years
i still can't believe i was able to see this in person. Was my first gig since 2019 and it couldn't have been better, thank you so much for posting this
the hypersonic missiles finale was like nothing I’ve ever experienced before !
@@marielaluisa7273 was so nice to experience it live! Felt like a dream 🥺
If Bruce wrote a song "Born in the UK"... Freaking brilliant. What a banger of a song. Sam, you've been shot out of a cannon now. Entranced re-watching (over and over) of this video out here on the west coast of the USA. Full tilt, global reach is coming to you. Enjoy the ride. Will see you rocking a stadium out this way, surely sometime soon.
I think it's one of the first times I want to sincerely thank TikTok users for putting this song so much into everybody's " for you page " that it became famous quicker than it probably would have become normally. Hearing them screaming the sentence " I was far too scared to hit him, but I would hit him in a hearbeat now " just exploded my heart.
Im glad we still have songs like this coming out. Its refreshing to have a proper band in the tops of the charts
Love hearing his accent in his singing 🤩
His star is rising fast and he deserves the success as the talent is totally awesome - Brixton Academy remains one of the best music venues in the whole wide world.
100 per cent true on all you said.
Proof that there is hope for modern music. Incredible 🤘🏻🎸
Definitely
Has to be the best version of this song out there. The build, the crowd, you feel like your there yourself when watching.
Agreed. Definitely the best version!
Nailed it 👌
His voice is so damn good. Pitch perfect every time. Damn
I heard this song on an American radio while sitting on a prison yard.
Tears came to my eyes
I never felt so complete with a full understanding and how I found myself sitting on that prison yard and what led to those moments.
I honestly try to sit still listening to this song.
But I just can’t. Nor do I ever want to.
Thank you Sam fender.
Listening for a year straight and still gives me goosebumps
Same, it's totally brilliant
The Sax player sounds absolutely amazing such a good tune
My nephew told me about this guy. Wow what a songwriter. Music is class love from glasgow 🏴
At 56 there are not nany musicians these days that i can listen to.But this guy is just so naturally ralented and this song gets me everytime i hear it.The crowd love him.Great to see such a talent coming out of the North East of England and his supporters up here are proud of him
That saxophone is so cool. It changes the recipe making it fresh!! Amazing band!!
Writing songs like this and it's only his second album. Wow.
Guitar music is looking healthy again!
This song is an absolute banger…proper modern classic. You don’t touch that many souls in a different way without being a good human. I love this guy
I'm not exaggerating when I say this is the best songwriting I've heard in years. I can't remember the last time I cried from the lyrics of a song alone. Let alone Sam's incredible vocals, the saxophone, piano, drums, glockenspiel - all of it 🥺 What a magnificent record.
Best song of the last 20 years
Amazing
Watching your growth has been phenomenal! You deserve all the success you’ve been getting and far more
He was top class from day 1. It was always going to be a matter of time. He was a standout in his teens
The most exciting new artist in a generation. Amazing album, but this live performance is something else. Can’t wait to see him live in March. Amazing performer; great band, and not afraid to speak the truth. Go Sam!
100% agree, we are blessed to be alive at the same time as him. He is an artist for the ages
It'd rare anymore that I hear a song and within 10 seconds I know it's an anthem. This song is powerful. It gives me hope that the future isn't doomed yet.
I'm 62 and play bass in a covers band, I think the singers daughter must have suggested we do this and I'm thinking.... what the hell... never heard of him or the song..... and before I heard it, I downloaded the lyrics.... that's the thing that got me....... heartwrenching words....... then watching this live performance of it...Blistering.Then only yesterday (19th May) Sam has won an Ivor Novello award for it.... quite rightly. What a talent and voice for a generation.
This song is so underrated! Absolute amazing performance, catching lyrics, nice guitar and overwhelming flow! I bet in one year many people will know who Sam fender is
He was complete perfection here
just hearing the guitar riff at the start gives me the chills. an incredible song and an even better artist ❤️
This song is pure perfection. Sam Fender is one of the purest singers I've ever heard. Love the sax in this song. I can hear some Waterboys in this music, definitely. Wonderful stuff. Go Sam!
This is an absolutely breathtaking performance from start to finish. Sam fender is so so good! The energy from the crowd is amazing!
The lyrics are so powerful and hold heartfelt meaning, the music and the energy reminds me of Bruce Springsteen, and I’ve seen him a few times, people might scoff at that however Sam Fender is most definitely the future, just let the kid grow, highly talented.
Proper anthem for our generation. Honestly cannot think of a song I have related to more in my life
This is the sound I’ve been longing for, for so many years
One of my favorite artists, he seems to capture the existential dread we all grew up with and struggle with each day. Every song makes me feel so much.
Whenever some loser says modern music isn’t good, it’s obvious they haven’t looked for it. Modern music is GOOD. Sam fender is GOOD, and this song is actual ecstasy
This night was my favourite concert ever. Can't get over the energy and how stellar you were!
I love this young guy! I'm a 60's/70's rock, old rock chick, he definitely ranks amongst the best!
I fucking love this man and his music
What a glorious tune. The energy in that place is off the scale. Just amazing.
Mark of a great artist , being able to sing just as good if not better live!
Wow one of they kinda songs that you NEVER want to end...sublime
This guy is fucking awesome so refreshing and still relatively unknown that's what makes him so good.
"Luck came and died 'round here."... of all the grim lines in this song, this one has to be the grimmest. I turned 70 recently, and this is without a doubt the best rock song I've heard since I was in my 20s. His voice is pitch-perfect all the time. Good luck to you, young man. You certainly deserve it.
Loving the geordie Springsteen, great to hear his voice being heard
that's a great description
Unbelievable artist! Deserves everything he’s achieved & everything that will come his way! A lad that lives a life a lot of us do. Tells it all
as it is through his voice. What a talent!
literally sitting here almost crying, this song and his music is so good. i hope ill be able to see him live some time in the future!! :,)
Brilliant, get the feeling he will be talked about in 20 years time as a timeless artist. Unreal storytelling. The geordie Springsteen
Sam Fender is absolutely awesome. Always puts a smile on my face every time I play his music. Particularly this song.
Arguably the best single of the last decade or so. I don't know a lot of Sam's music but I know I absolutely love everything about this track! Melody, lyrics, brass section; all sublime!
I’ve been told twice now that I resemble Sam fender so I looked into his music catalogue, not only do I see the similarities in the way we look but this man writes like he’s lived my life, thank god for my friends comparing us
ngl if you look like sam fender you are absolutely blessed
@@lois3422 i wouldn't say i look exactly like him i just have similar features arranged slightly differently and a resting bitch face too which sam has in a lot of photos of him
A touch of class has returned to music at 63 i see a new Boss wickedly good
this guy is different, I saw him here in Plymouth a few years back, and it was frankly insane. Every line has a secret, and for the die hards he just keeps on keeping on. Come back soon
At 60 years old I love Sam fenders music he makes me young at heart I'm going to see him in Newcastle he makes me feel young at heart
Keep rocking son
I’m so proud as a Geordie that Sam is doing so well and his songs are incredible. The fact he’s playing this at Brixton Academy, one of my favourite ever venues is the icing on the cake.
His voice always gives me chills so beautiful!
I love him! What a tune, what a voice!! And the crowd singing!!! Wow!
he's perfect
Towards the end he smiles looking at the crowd like "holy shit I can't believe I'm up here and all those people are singing my song back at me, this is fucking great!". Absolutely brilliant artist, and seems like a nice guy on top of it.
I already love this song, but the way he’s singing it here is another level man.
Very rarely do I give compliments like this, but if I had to point to where the modern spirit of rock roll/pop is I'd gladly point here!
This is definitely my most favourite tune of the year and probably until his nxt one
Impossibile not to love him and his art💘
"That's the thing with anger: it begs to stick around." This dude is so overlooked still in the states. Great song writer.
Wow - this is even better live..! The musical ideas flow much better live..one of my fav SF tracks so far. It’s so bare and so direct.
This gives me chills. Been listening repeatedly. Chills every time
This is “born in the USA” for 2022. I’m floored.
Those lyrics are enough to knock you out man, so poetic and haunting
One of the best song to come out in a long time, it’s a master piece 👏
F**kin' wonderful song! What a breath of fresh air as heartbreaking and poignant as it is... its great. A voice for a new generation. This song will live forever. Mark my words.
We’re watching a legends career in motion. He’s a one in a generation artist that everything he touches is magic.
What a hymn to the youth and life. Sam, you‘re a legend.
One of the things I love about this song is that Sam uses a few words that only us Geordies can make out! 😉
Life in a northern town. A thousand regrets. Keep firing through!
I honestly believe this is the best version of 17 going under
"I spent my teens enraged, spiralling in silence, and i armed myself with a grin, cos i was always a f*cking joker"
Brilliant line, can relate to this 100 percent - sums up myself and my teenage years exactly.
You've literally put some of my child hood into a song bro
Best song of the last twenty years! If you're not deeply touched there's something wrong with your ❤
LOVE HIM.. HIS MUSIC AND HIS ENERGY
100 for the vibe of this song...TOP
I remember the sickness was forever
I remember snuff videos
Cold Septembers, the distances we covered
The fist fights on the beach, the bizzies round us up
Do it all again next week
An embryonic love
The first time that it scarred
Embarrass yourself for someone
Crying like a child
And the boy who kicked Tom's head in
Still bugs me now
That's the thing, it lingers
And claws you when you're down
I was far too scared to hit him
But I would hit him in a heartbeat now
That's the thing with anger
It begs to stick around
So it can fleece you of your beauty
And leave you spent with nowt to offer
It makes you hurt the ones who love you
You hurt them like they're nothing
(Oh, oh)
You hurt them like they're nothing
(Oh, oh)
You hurt them like they're nothing
(Oh, oh)
See I spent my teens enraged
Spiraling in silence
And I armed myself with a grin
'Cause I was always the fuckin' joker
Buried in their humor
Amongst the white noise and boys' boys
Locker-room talkin' lads' lads
Drenched in cheap drink and snide fags
A mirrored picture of my old man
Oh God, the kid's a dab hand
Canny chanter, but he looks sad
God, the kid looks so sad
God, the kid looks so sad
She said the debt, the debt, the debt
So I thought about shifting gear
And how she wept and wept and wept
Luck came and died 'round here
I see my mother
The DWP see a number
She cries on the floor encumbered
I'm seventeen going under
I'm seventeen going under
(Oh, oh)
I'm seventeen going under (oh, oh)
(Oh, oh)
I'm seventeen going under (oh, oh)
(Oh, oh)
I'm seventeen going under (oh, oh)
(Oh, oh)
(Oh)
Everyone from 17 onwards can relate to this song in one way or another- 17 going under, we’ve all been there just on different levels ❤
This is incredible
This is one of the best performances I've seen in forever.
His voice is so clean
So proud of how far this legend has come my mam's from Newcastle so Sam's music really hits home for me I've followed him since the dead boys EP and my mates have seen him about three or four times ( I'll get my chance soon I hope lol) but this song really resonates with me I'm literally turning 17 at the end of the month up until a few months ago I was kind of a typical loner indie kid when I heard this song it just felt like Sam wrote it for me and knew exactly what I was going through I'd started college around the time the album dropped and it just felt so poignant
