Searching youtube for something new to listen to I fortunately dropped on `17 going under` and I'm so plzd I did as I am now an avid listener to this young talented singer/song writer.Sam Fender is a well grounded individual with huge potential.

It's great to see a talented musician being loved by all these young lads and lasses appealing to the young of both sexes and us older ones are listening to him at home!! The thing is the types of things he writes about are relevant to young people but a lot of them are timeless themes. We've all been through what he writes about. And I'm so proud he's from the North East and doesn't mind letting his accent come over in his singing.

At 53 I am later to most parties these days, and that's the case with Sam Fender. But, having found him, I'm obsessed! Lyrically and vocally amazing. I can't remember anyone talking to a disaffected youth in such a way since The Smiths. And if the saxophonist doesn't get to play with Bruce Springsteen at some stage, that will be a travesty. A reincarnation of Clarence Clemons!

You know you've written a transcendent song when someone from across the globe listens to an automotive podcast and the hosts, from LA, just rave about the artist as they play the song, just to share the music with their listeners. This is how a 50 year old guy in the northwest US finds Sam Fender. Then, the music takes hold and the addiction really starts. Sam, you and the fellas are going global. Lookout... It's gonna be a wild ride! You're damn right that "we did it boys, we fuckin' did it". You sure as hell did.

j for my own reference lads:
I remember the sickness was forever
    I remember snuff videos
Cold Septembers, the distances we covered
The fist fights on the beach, the bizzies round us up
Do it all again next week
    An embryonic love
The first time that it scarred
    Embarrass yourself for someone
    Crying like a child
And the boy who kicked Tom's head in
    Still bugs me now
    That's the thing, it lingers
And claws you when you're down
I was far too scared to hit him
But I would hit him in a heartbeat now
    That's the thing with anger
    It begs to stick around
So it can fleece you of your beauty
And leave you spent with nowt to offer
It makes you hurt the ones who love you
You hurt them like they're nothing
    (Oh, oh)
You hurt them like they're nothing
    (Oh, oh)
You hurt them like they're nothing
    (Oh, oh)
See I spent my teens enraged
    Spiraling in silence
And I armed myself with a grin
'Cause I was always the fuckin' joker
    Buried in their humor
Amongst the white noise and boys' boys
    Locker-room talkin' lads' lads
Drenched in cheap drink and snide fags
A mirrored picture of my old man
Oh God, the kid's a dab hand
Canny chanter, but he looks sad
God, the kid looks so sad
God, the kid looks so sad
She said the debt, the debt, the debt
So I thought about shifting gear
And how she wept and wept and wept
Luck came and died 'round here
    I see my mother
    The DWP see a number
She cries on the floor encumbered
    I'm seventeen going under

"I was far too scared to hit him, but I would hit him in a heartbeat now" just resonates so much to teenage angst and fear. I'm late 30s and this song has just caught me in the head. Terrific songwriter.

Been hearing this song on the radio for a couple of months, didnt know who it was but it HIT me the first time. 60 years old, punk rocker in my teens, getting shit tossed at us, getting the remarks from peeps, getting beaten up cause we were different and stood out of the rest. dont take no shit from anybody and be who you want to be and look like you want to look like. Sam Fender you are fucking brilliant

British Northern working class sensibility and musical legacy ( Sam Vendor) meets Bruce Springsteen meets The War on Drugs - and for a newly established artist that’s quite the accolade - he makes me proud to be British.
Listen carefully to the lyrics of Born in the USA (which is the exact opposite to a flag waving tribute to the US ) or Dancing in the dark or Born to Run and they all talk of the desperation and despair that growing up in depressed and poor post industrial areas can cause. With high unemployment and very little opportunities for young people to find a career and build a life of their own it’s very easy to feel defeated before you have even started.
I remember how hard it was being 17 and how the world didn’t take me seriously and how lost I was. Now looking back on it I see that I should of understood and appreciated how young I was and how much I had to look forward to but I just couldn’t.
Before I even heard the song the title ‘17 going under’ immediately resonated with me and then the rest is why I’m here writing this and why you’re reading it.
Sam Vendor flies the flag for his generation and shows how much they have to offer. The older generation are quick to dismiss them as lost behind their phones and in social media with nothing to offer and no substance but he proves how wrong they are - although I’m part of the older generation I never gave up on the younger ones of today - keep on keeping on.
I hope one day when you’re 50 (like me) a modern day Sam Vendor will move you as much as he has moved me to express myself in words.

"I was far too scared to hit him, but I'd hit him in a heart beat now" sung back from the audience with the same passion and intensity as you'd find in a Springsteen concert, audience and performer one entity. Great!
