During my graduate studies I had the opportunity to participate in the Model UN. It was our universities first time doing it and we ended up walking away with some awards which caught the eye of those who ran the thing. I’m public policy major with very little International Relations work, but I used my experiences in Activism while there. My group represented Liberia as my friend who convinced to participate is from Liberia and most of our friends she convinced were from all over Africa, so it made sense to rep Liberia. Once we got there, there was a university (mostly white) that represented Nigeria and had won multiple awards. So, all they cared about was winning awards. So they completely misrepresented Nigeria and disregarded the real relationships that exist between African nations within the UN. This pissed off a couple of other Universities along with other students who were actually from Nigeria. These students’ white elitism was on full blast. Like the elitism from American State workers who try to strong arm other countries into towing the US foreign policy line. So, I did nothing but find any piece of UN resolution I could to backhandedly embarrass this university including forging relationships with other countries that were not realistically allied with Liberia. It was hard and we all came to agreements and together forged a United African front against Nigeria. All this is to say that after it was over I was invited to go further in Model UN and encouraged that being a diplomat might be a good path for me to take, but I declined. I refuse to advance any US foreign policy onto host countries when that policy is inherently imperialistic, racist, and neo-colonial. Diplomats have to play by the rules or they don’t get into the big-people club. Like the US threatening India with sanctions if they don’t tow the line by condemning Russia and ban oil and gas sales. Who is the US to tell India how to act towards an economic ally? Am I cut out for being a Diplomat? Yes. Do I have the tools and knowledge required to become a diplomat? Yes. However, I will not participate in advancing a very violent foreign policy in host countries. I would enjoy working over seas and helping advance my host countries own interests even if it contradicts the US interests which - let’s face it - the interests of corporations. All of this to to say that I want to work over seas because it’s something I’m passionate about but I won’t play ball with the State department. 😂

    • @heymstraveler

Hi Brianna! Thank you so much for commenting and watching. As FSOs, you swear to "uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic." We are not swearing allegiance to a specific president or administration. Public service is more about the national interest and not so much the individual interest. These are questions you should reflect on. With that said there are dissent channels and ways to dissent. One great resource I would like to direct you to is the book, Inside a U.S. Embassy. It has a great article that goes into this question in more detail.
