Some years back when I lived in the Washington DC area there was a diplomat from one of the former USSR-states (I don't recall which) who was driving drunk, hit, & killed a teenage girl. His country pulled his credentials which took away his diplomatic immunity. He was convicted of DUI-manslaughter & went to prison.

Well, yes absolutely! Diplomatic immunity does not waiver the right of other people to defend themself or others. Further, if an attacker is a diplomat, the amount of justifiably force for self defense and defiance of others, will have other limits. For example, life threatening kidnapping with blackmail by a diplomat, would probably allow to hire mercenaries legally to deal with it. Trying to get the influential CEO coerced into assisting some espionage or sabotage may backfire severely. His company can legally pay private security services, maybe run by some veterans with plenty of combat experience. This actually gives the diplomat less protection in this case because his status as a diplomat justifies use of more force relative to the common criminal performing the same action.
The police may not be able to act, but private security providers are not bound by diplomatic immunity and will not waiver their right to protect their customers. The diplomat may end up dead and immune at the same time. However this is not a problem, a diplomat doing actual diplomacy is indeed still immune. If diplomats try to use their countries army to enforce their behavior its an act of war, because they are using armed force to suspended an others countries sovereign order.
In that regard I think that diplomatic immunity is sacred, it does not allow to abuse power in an uncontrollable way, but is essential for keeping or reestablishing peace!
It only works if the country that they are from supporst them. This is not always the case.

The lady has admitted this on camera.
The US can still order a diplomat to leave the country, and the leader of that country won't be too happy with the diplomat for being kicked out of the US since most countries value a relationship with the US.
So, it's in a diplomat's best interest not to break any laws, at least intentionally or knowingly.

You can report it to your the authorities really. They might be immune but they can be deported back to their country where the trial for misconduct will occur. Sad part tho is that the guy or gal won't be imprisoned in your own country

In my country the 2 kids of a diplomat beated severely one kid from my country (the boy was left unconscious bleeding and almost died). They just said sorry, the family fled my country, the diplomat was substituted and no one was charged. It still boils my blood everytime I remember this

These incidents make me wonder why there is no middle-ground solution to all of this. Both extremes, as exemplified, are extremely dangerous
It is called a Waiver for Diplomatic Immunity.
This video is ment to entertain, not inform.
Guy above is right. Your immunity isn’t binding and can be revoked given the severity of the offense.
Knowing you embarrassed your country in the host state is a punishment enough.
The waiver is the middle ground.
First time I heard about diplomatic immunity was from Lethal Weapon 2. Those guys in that movie really took advantage of it. Loved the ending “Diplomatic immunity” *bang* “Just been revoked.”

Reminds me of a case here in my home country of Singapore, when a charges d'affaires (a fancy name for a deputy ambassador) committed a hit-and-run on three pedestrians, one of whom sadly passed. Due to diplomatic immunity, the charges d'affaires could not be charged here in Singapore, especially once investigations uncovered that not only was he the one behind the wheel during the hit-and-run, but also lied to throw off investigations before he fled the country.
Luckily, this story did not end on a downer note, as his home country formally charged the man with the crime he committed in Singapore, and found him guilty of the crime, and was dealt with accordingly (he got prison time, but he died before he started serving due to health problems).
Step One: Become a diplomat.
Step Two: Break the law.
Step Three: Profit (and possibly cause a war).

Diplomatic immunity should exist, it should protect the family members too, but it should be more limited. For example the diplomat's wife ran over a kid in a wrong way and killed him. Nothing should be able to get you out of so much bs. Also if someone intentionally does harm to innocents they should lose the immunity.
EDIT: Diplomatic immunity should be limited to the things that they can be set up to/accused of and wrongfully arrested. It shouldn't protect them from this kind of very obvious crimes. And definitely not where they can say: "Yes. We're guilty,but f your human and civilian rights".

I've watched the video I'm commenting on and what I'm saying is that it's logical they should be protected, but no-one should be protected from a mistake like the diplomat's wife in this story. Because if she definitely drove faster in a zone where pedestrians are walking, if she drove as much as the sighs allow her, she would've probably just wounded the kid. Second she hit the kid while driving in a wrong way, so there are three big mistakes. Even the diplomat himself shouldn't be allowed to walk out of that one.

Kind of sad that there's a lot of dishonesty and downright corruption with diplomatic immunity, the 19yo fella killed by the US diplomat being a prime example, she was driving on the wrong side of the road (because of course we drive on the left in the UK) and therefore guilty of driving without due care and attention leading to the death of the young lad, anyone else would be behind bars, but because of that little technicality, she got away scot free, while the family had lost a son and can't get any justice as a result...
It's really annoying that the US will not prosecute killers but their biggest enemy will

There isn't a lot of dishonesty or corruption. These were just cherry picked incidents that happened over a span of decades. The overwhelming majority of diplomats cause no issues within the countries they are staying in.

Remember the incident in the 80's where LAPD uncovered a money laundering scheme by South African diplomats involving illegal gold krugerrands, drug smuggling and murders? The diplomat used Diplomatic Immunity to avoid arrest. They made a great documentary about it

I used to live in Mexico City because my dad was a Special agent for HSI, which gave him diplomatic immunity and I remember him getting pulled over for speeding and pulling out his credentials, and the police officer just started apologizing for the inconvenience.
The leader of Suriname has an arrest warrant issued by Interpol that states “if he was to set foot in Europe especially Holland he be arrested on the spot.”
The host country chooses who it gives a diplomatic status. But once they give it to you and until your term at the ambassy end or they expell you of the country they cannot take it back. Once you're in your home country however, you are no longer considered a diplomat to them. And they can choose to out warrants out.

DI only protects the diplomat from prosecution in the host country; he can be prosecuted in his home country for any crimes he did while on tour (provided the conduct is also a crime within the laws of the home country).
Also, there's the possibility of the home country throwing him to the wolves i.e. Revoking his immunity

@@SilverVolo she was, she went on trial via a video link from the US on Jan 18th 2022. The US will probably never extradite her to the UK but if convicted she will most likely be arrested if she ever sets foot in the UK.

It's a gross oversimplification to say that the Harry Dunh case was "clear-cut manslaughter," under both British and American law most car accidents aren't criminal events, unless someone is under the influence, behaving exceptionally reckless etc.

Bro this ain’t it. My mom is a diplomat which means we have moved countries. While diplomats can’t technically be arrested by normal police there is a diplomat police force who can arrest diplomats. And let’s say for example that you violate a law in the country that you are posted in and the diplomat police force arrest you, you are immediately sent back and could even face trial in the country your sent from if the crime is severe. Anyway that’s all I had to say👍✌️
That's more or less what this video conveys though. You can't be tried in a host country with diplomatic immunity, but you can be taken into custody and sent back to your home country.

The good news is that when a diplomat commits a crime in a host country, the diplomat’s home country will often revoke their immunity for the sake of maintaining good relations with the host country.
