I've been applying for jobs as a recent international relations grad in kenya. It's hard getting a job. Thank you for this. It means a lot
I’m so sorry to hear this, but I’m happy this video was useful. I’m cheering you on!
Thanks for the video, Chelsea! I agree with reconsidering travel to LA / being careful for those who are here. I am in LA, thankfully away from the fires but between what seems like the two current red zones (near DTLA), and I've been limiting my outside time. Air quality is thankfully much better than days ago, but ashes are still around. There are still small particles on my doormat that fly in when I open my door. It's a sad time for sure.
I am so sorry to hear all that is going on in LA. But I am thankful that you are doing okay and are away from the fires. I’m also glad to hear that you are limiting your time indoors. Stay safe and thanks for letting me know your experience ✨
@@heymstraveler Absolutely! I hope you're well :)
I've been wondering what kind of jobs are out there for IR bachelor grads, appreciate you making this video! Could you make a video about the career prospects of being a local staff to foreign embassies (e.g., a US citizen working for the British Embassy in Washington)? Thanks a lot!
I’m glad this video was helpful! And great idea for a video! I will consider it. Thanks for watching!!
Except for when she starts generalizing and talking in stereotypes, this is a great interview.
Thanks
I'm glad you found it helpful! Thanks for watching ☺️
Alsoo, I had a few questions as well lol: 1.) would it be possible for you to do a video covering some of the best HBCUs and/or Colleges to study International Affairs (or related fields)? It can be based off your opinion I trust your judgment/expertise;) 2.) Also maybe an in depth video on Peace & Conflict Resolution careers if you haven’t already? 3.) Lastly: This might be a bit challenging to do but would you consider maybe doing a video on the potential of Regional/Area Studies Degrees(e.g. African Studies, Middle Eastern Studies, Latin American, East Asian Studies, South Asian, etc.) my current degree is in East Asian studies but I have been feeling inclined recently to change it to something more all-encompassing like the majors mentioned in your video. How would you recommend pairing a bachelor’s/masters degree for a career in international affairs? Like Should your bachelor’s degree be more/less concentrated on a very specific subject or is it better to pursue such for your Masters/PHD. Thanks so much for your help
Thank you for your questions!! I definitely have a Peace and Conflict studies video coming out. Be on the alert for that video! The HBCUs video is a great idea. And so is regional studies. I will consider them! Thank you so much for your input!!
Hey Chelsea, first off, I just have to say I truly can’t express enough how grateful I am for you and how much your channel has guided me over the past few years, deepening my understanding of myself and that path I wish to pave for my career. I’m surprised you didn’t put the military. Many members of the military make 6 figures or equivalent take home pay. Similar to state department. Much of DoD pay is untaxed for service members.
That is a great addition! If I could do the video all over again, I would definitely add military. Thanks for the comment !
@ do you have any videos that breakdown fso pay. I’ve been looking into Foreign Service Diplomatic Technology Officer career field.
That’s a good idea! Thanks for the suggestion. I’ll add it to the line up.
Hey ! What if you get a masters in IA ? I have a bachelors in health science but I want to work globally in government
Hey Kyla! Thanks for your question. Honestly, I think it depends on your end goal. I have a video on masters in IA coming out soon. But to answer you question, it depends on your goal. I would find the position you are interested in and start checking doing things to make yourself the strongest candidate for that role. IA is a super broad field. So in my opinion, if you can go specific, that would be better. Like say you want to go into science and tech with IA. I would get your IA masters degree with an emphasis on science and tech. So you're taking courses related to science and tech. That will give you the certification, courses, and experiential experience needed for your ideal role. Hope this helps! Thanks for commenting and watching :-)
Hey, to do that would an international law degree work

Hi- I love your videos and I’ve been following for a while. I have come up with an issue I hope you might be able to guide me with. I have a BA in International Criminal Justice, have a semester left of my MIBA in International Business Administration and have been accepted into a PhD program for International Policy, I’m bilingual and have experience in education, retail, and health care- but NO ONE IS HIRING ME?! I’ve been applying for roles since July, and I’m confused because I’ve had my resume polished so many times, have a job recruiter help me, and even had interviews but I always get radio silence or a no, even when I follow up. What am I doing wrong? I have a lot of great skills to offer, and I’m feeling particularly disappointed when I had to dumb down my resume and even retail/food industry jobs won’t hire me. What should be my next step? Thanks in advance, and best wishes in the new year.
I’m going to add my two cents here. First, there’s nothing that you are doing that’s wrong. What you’re experiencing is actually quite normal in today’s job climate. I’ve had similar experiences in the past. And what I’ve had to do is design and craft my resume in a way that highlights my degree and experience but also reveals how I stand out. You have to keep in mind, so many people have a degree these days. There’s a surplus. The number of bilingual speakers is growing. Speaking from the United States only, these qualities used to be novel 10 to 15 years ago. They have become more commonplace. So the route is not as linear and straightforward as it used to be. And by the way, I’m someone in my mid 40s working in international relations; it took a very long time to get there. I see so few women like me, for disclosure, I am a Black woman, and I see very little representation in the IR space. What I will tell you is be careful how you present your degrees on your résumé. I would be very cautious about even mentioning pursuing a PhD. A PhD can often be a double edged sword depending on what field you’re in. Especially if you are younger and you don’t have a certain duration of experience. People automatically see a doctorate and expects candidates to ask for more money. Which makes sense. But employers are hesitant to extend offers-especially if it’s not a high executive position. Lastly, the university to secured employment pipeline is so unreliable these days. Also, the fact that you are getting interviews is a big deal! There are people who will send out hundreds of resumes and not hear a drop within 6 to 7 months. So that tells me that you are on the right track. It has nothing to do with you, your experience, or your skill set. The job market is trash right now. Just keep doing what you’re doing, and I do believe it’ll pay off. It’s just going to take longer than what any of us expected.
@ thank you! I’m a 25 year Mexican American and I can’t talk to my parents about this because none of them went to college or see why I want to study human trafficking. It’s harder to talk about this with my friends because they don’t have a desire for international relations or for anything beyond their peripheral view, and that might explain why they’re comfortable in their minimum wage jobs and don’t see anything else. I appreciate your feedback and will continued to apply! If you happen to come across and postings- please keep me posted too, I also would like to see more people from black and brown communities in this career path
@ I work in labor exploitation which includes human trafficking.
@ Maybe you should try Peace Corps in a Latin American county where labor exploitation, including trafficking, is prevalent.
Hello! I am so glad that you enjoy my content, but I am sorry to hear that you are in a tough spot. I read what @misschiefmanager6670 wrote and I agree with a lot of what she said. A few things I will add is first, congrats on getting accepted to your PhD!! When you are in the program, be sure to connect with your professors and see if they have any leads. I agree with the previous comment about tailoring your resume and why you stand you. But one thing I will add is networking. You may already be doing this, but for every job or company that you are interested in, I would reach out to the people that work there and the hiring managers on Linkedin. I would introduce myself personally and ask if you talk with them 10 -15 minutes to learn more about the role and company. There present yourself. Also, if the job is close by, I would show up in person and introduce myself. I would bring or create a mock material that could align perfectly with the position to show that you are willing to go the extra mile. I would form relationships with these people so you are not just another name on their list. Getting interviews are huge!! When you have another interview, go even the extra mile and create a product for them or a mock material that could potentially help their business or organization.

Hello! Thanks so much for commenting. If that interests you, go for it! I think that is very forward thinking. International territorial studies course? Is it is same as international studies or different
Hello!!! An International Territorial Studies course is different from International Studies,BUT there are some similarities. International territorial studies focuses mainly on territories and regions. International studies is a bit more broader and focuses on international relations, global issues, cross cultural understanding, etc. Thanks for your question and watching!
@heymstraveler it mean international territorial studies is different than international studies
