I know this may be a little out of context judging by the books you picked, but what do you think about "flying over cuckoo's nest"? :D Yes, it's an unconventional choice, since it's mainly about rebellion, authorities, control, etc.. But I would argue that the Nurse Ratched relationship with all the patients who are male can also be viewed through the "mommy issues" perspective. Especially if we take into account the enormous power she held in the clinic, just like an authoritative mother would in a regular household.

Interesting! I read flying over cuckoo's nest last year and I never made this connection to the characters with nurse ratched - she def seems to adopt the role as almost a surrogate mother for the patients which is quite a compelling take on how that's analysed to affect the characters psychologically

I felt exactly the same reading Milk Fed, it explores the mother and daughter and food relationships perfectly in the first chapters, and then in gets extremly sexually without a sense...

so glad you agree !! i was completely hooked at the start and was really looking forward to see how it spanned out, but the rest of the book was just such a led it! don't really understand the people that gave it 5 stars lol

Highly disagree on your take about Mother Thing! My favorite book I read all year, it resonated with me so much, and I think the ending was perfectly nuanced but I do agree that it was sort of pitched as an intense ghost story and it's not at all that, I think that's why a lot of people get dissapointed by it :/ if you like unhinged female narators, read Animal by Lisa Taddeo! It was my favorite book of last year and I never hear anyone talk about it, be warned though that the narrator can be very annoying at times!

interesting! can i ask what aspects you resonated with? genuinely curious to hear your opinion! i think her husband just annoyed me tbf, he just seemed useless and annoying and i couldn't understand why she was trying so hard to stay with him - which is why the ending made me frustrated! i've heard good things about animal! i'll keep an eye out to buy it, thanks for the rec chy (:

Gotta say books with mommy issues are some of my absolute favourites to read. I am a complete mess by the end of them, a lot of the time seeing my own strained relationship in them, but man books like Breasts and Eggs, Crying in H Mart and Motherthing are so gripping and so vulnerable that it’s hard not to be in completely sucked into each book!

Bad Fruit by Ella King is one I’m currently reading that’s strongly rooted in mommy issues but is also a mystery.

it's soooo good, definitely my favourite kawakami book - the way sociological female issues are explored is really interesting! let me know what you think when you get round to reading it (:
