QUANTUM OF SOLACE | Bond is chased around Lake Garda

  • James Bond (Daniel Craig) attempts to lose his pursuers in the opening car chase sequence from QUANTUM OF SOLACE (2008) on the roads around Lake Garda. Stunt coordinator Gary Powell said: “It wasn’t the size of the car, or the amount of cars that made it complicated. It was the locations. We were in a very long tunnel, only 28 feet wide. When there are 40 cars going through it, at the speeds we were doing, it becomes a technical challenge.”

      @@za7004 It's not just a matter of speed, it's a matter of coverage and shot choices. You can't tell what's going on half the time, and that destroys any ability to appreciate the sequence of events. In the human realm, an event has far greater potential to be exciting to an audience than a mere isolated sensation. (Hah, oh, it's you again. No wonder we have such differing views of the movie.)

      @AndSendMe 4 года назад +8

      Exactly. His score for this movie was really superb. He has traveled from execrable Barry pastiches to his surprising and excellent work in CR, then here he fully took ownership of the mantle, creating an original sound with exciting new variations on old motifs and fantastic new material that translated the Bond feel into the modern era with tremendous energy, variety and style. It is a great loss that he was taken off the project. Although lord knows what he would have been made to do for the recent movies. Shame this movie didn't live up to the score, its many excellent ideas were somehow shattered into a mess.

      @za7004 4 года назад +9

      @@AndSendMe I wouldn't call Quantum of Solace a mess by any means. I think it is a really competent, sober and realistic Bond film. I think you are just buying too much to other people's opinions about this movie. Sure it could have been better. But there isnt anything wrong with the movie as it is. There are far worse Bond films that are regarded as great by most critics. It is just bias. I enjoy QOS every time I watch it. It is as close to the Bond novels and the Bond character from them, as it is possible in a film. Take my advice - form your own opinion - don't be a guilable ship influnced by other people's thoughts about stuff.

      @@za7004 Thanks for your thoughtful comments. Your concerns about the second-handedness of my opinions are misplaced though--any errors are my own doing. I appreciate your comments about the film's virtues though. I was very disappointed in the editing of some of the action sequences and the third act was quite flat for me. These and other problems to do with tone gave me a strong sense of squandered opportunity because of the movie's fantastic visual style and the many great ideas for set pieces, especially early in the movie. I admit these problems may well have colored my judgment of the overall cohesion of the movie. I will enjoy having another look at it to see if I failed to give it proper credit.

      They 100% could've made those scenes much better and with the same intent, without all those ridiculous cuts.

      D!ng probably the worst bond movie in my opinion, I walked out of the cinema unbelievably disappointed, but it’s subjective at the end of the day, it would appear quantum of solace is to Bond movies as The last Jedi is to Star Wars, it’s either the worst or one of the best as far as opinions go, I hated both 😂

      @@paulfea Eh, I see why you would think that this is a good comparison, but no. TLJ is beautifully shot and edited, unlike Quantum which is absolutely butchered editing. Add to that, TLJ has a good overall story with all several arcs that thread and weave together into a epic climax with career-best performances by Hamill and Fisher. Quantum's story is dull with uninteresting villains that aren't memorable. If anything TLJ is better compared to Casino Royale.

    This opening scene is pure adrenaline....The Alfa 3.2 pitted against the Aston V12....those stunt drivers got injured pretty bad....hardly surprising when a skip truck hits you at full pelt .....the quarry chase....and then the Alfa rams Bond ..... absolutely fantastic...edge of your seat stuff..utterly believable.....Well done Bond producers,editors, Daniel Craig and stuntmen.you can even own a piece of Bond history if you sniff out the Alfa limited edition Bond edition too...only 250 made...

    The mighty Aston Martin DBS V12.... even minus a door it still handles business! The one in "Casino Royale" didn't see much action ( save for the record-breaking barrel-roll), but this one made up for it with some great on-road combat.

    Western "Gardesana" road in the beginning of the scene and then "Strada della Forra", one of the most beautiful scenic roads in the World , nearby where I live, it was referred by Winston Churchill as the height wonder of the world.
    Stunning but dangerous roads, during the shooting, the marvelous Bond's Aston Martin DBS was wrecked after plunging into the lake.

    Many years ago, long before this movie was made, I visited the Lake Garda region in Italy and during that visit, I took a busride along the same road along the shores of Lake Garda shown in this scene. It would be COMPLETELY IMPOSSIBLE to do a car chase like this on that road, there are too many curves too narrow to be able to drive at the shown velocities. But, due to movie magic, I still totally "believed" this scene when watching the movie for the first time, instead of laughing my ass off, like I did when rewatching it later.

    • @nicoladc89
      @nicoladc89 2 года назад +2

      Well, the stuntman crashed into the lake, so yes it's impossible. But the most impossible thing is turn at a road cross near to Garda lake and jump in a marble cave in Carrara (300 km southwest of Garda Lake)
