idk wtf Bear put in the music, but everytime they hit the triumphant phrase after the main low chant part always always ALWAYS brings me goosebumps and tears. NOTHING ELSE makes me feel the shivers and joy and emotion this theme does
The Solo female voice is the theme for his Wife and then the brass after is their Son's Theme. It's so good. btw. the lingering pad like sound at the start is a Hurdy Gurdy.
The instrument in the background is a hurdy gurdy. It’s present in most of the soundtrack but typically used to ground the Nordic setting. There’s some kind of weird effect or technique used by the player in this particular piece however.
2:37 yow Tony, i think the instrument you are hearing is the Hurdy Gurdy. Bear Mcreary has a video of it, where he talks about another track he did (the Opening theme for black sails), where he shows it. There is also a live preformance of another song for god of war he did, where he plays the hurdy gurdy on stage. Hope this helps clear some things up
the constant 3 notes you are hearing are actually something that Bear McCreary came up with as a starter when he was writing this piece, he was writing this specifically as Kratos’ (the main character) theme, as Bear himself said, Kratos is a man of a few words, he doesn’t say anything unnecessary he only speaks when he needs to, so coming up with something for him was hard, because he wanted it to fit his character, so he wrote these 3 notes first and was stuck on what to do next because he doesn’t want it to be too busy or too bland, but the more he listened to these 3 notes the more it seemed to him that it fits kratos’ character. So thats what he kept. In his own words Kratos is a man of a few words, so his theme should be one of a few notes.
6:45 the genius thing about this part that you missed is that the themes for Kratos , his son and his wife are all playing in this section and they all fit so well.
As good as GOW Ragnorok music is on it's own, it's even better in context during the gameplay. The game, story, and music all prop each other up so well, its no surprise it got game of the year. Even a layman can understand that they are experiencing something special.
That's probably why Bear asked for the worlds greatest vocalist, Eivor who is Faroese and who also co-composed The Last Kingdom Soundtrack on which she also did all of the vocals.
Eivor is my favorite vocalist ever and I think Bear could see that also as he asked for her. I hear you back there Eivor you brilliant woman. Eivor can do anything and co-composed (with John Lunn) and did all of the vocals on The Last Kingdom Soundtrack. Of course she is a total Viking. That might be a lute you are hearing, but it's hard to tell.
At 6:45, its very special because other significant character themes pop up Also, I implore you to play God of War, specifically 2018 and Ragnarok have truly masterful story telling which is only made better by the amazing character performances. Some of the best games of the decade, no questions asked.
@@DrumRollTonyReacts Awesome! Glad I could help. There is an entire track called Raeb's Lament featuring this instrument solo. Raeb is just Bear in reverse, the developers added him as a character in the game, a bard character of course! Love your channel, thank you for all your work. 🤟
This OST is filled with some absolutely incredible tracks. One that I highly recommend is Raeb's Lament. It's a funeral dirge that hits the nail on the head in every single way. In my opinion, the writing captures the perceived slowing of time, usually experienced in moments of great loss, tragedy, or crisis. Also, the hurdy gurdy shines in that track. I really think you'll like this one!
The instrument you couldn't detect in tbe background is called the hurddy Gurddy It's an Icelandic instrument used throughout the rest of the ost for key tracks. Seeing as the game is set in Nordic myth,it makes sense. Bear really knows how to use it well in this game.
You should check out when they revealed the first trailer for God of War (2018) back in 2016. No one even knew it was going to be God of War so they revealed by having Bear McCreary compose live in front of an audience with a theme very similar to this one as they showcased gameplay. What's even cooler is that the gameplay had no soundtrack built in, McCreary was composing/conducting in real time in beat with the gameplay
Well damn, guess this is going on my driving playlist. The way this song builds and climaxes (or whatever terminology you're supposed to use) gives me goosebumps every time.
Songs like these are so solid, I dig the vocal lines and powerful brass sections. I just found your channel this week via the Black Clover intros video while I was putting together an Anime Bangers playlist, love your stuff! The immense depth of appreciation and insight you show for compositions is so much greater than my own and I enjoy listening as you dissect songs because it allows me to deepen my own appreciation and enjoyment. As an unschooled music lover I'd very much like to hear your reaction to the song Weight of Love by Black Keys if you've not heard it before. It is a delight to the senses.
Hey Tony :) Cool of you checking this out. If you find the time, you should give Eivør a listen. She is a faroese singer, which is a island group between the UK and Iceland with around 50.000 inhabitants. Among other things, she does a lot or nordic inspired folk rock with throat singing. It probably wouldn´t suit the channel as nordic music historically has been with few instruments and mainly focussed on the voice. But personally, I think it is really cool that Bear Mcreary decided to choose a singer from really small nordic country to add to his theme for a game set in the nordic mythos.
As a non-musician but a media buff in general the thing that stands out to me the most in this song is in the later half. The game has a lot of themeing about fate and the breaking in cycles. This song is so similar to the previous game. It supports the idea of a fated cycle that turns up again and again. But after the dip theres a new voice in the mix that wasnt there before, letting you know that not everything is the same this time, there may yet be hope.
You should see the translated lyrics, if you’ve played the games, (which if you haven’t what the hell are you doing, they’re some of the best games ever) it hits *HARD*. There’s a line in that song, that hits like a fucking truck. If you’ve seen the lyrics, you know exactly what I’m talking about

I second this! Only trouble is one or 2 songs isn't enough - you need at least 4-5 to start to get a good idea of her abilities :) And DRT is more about composition and the instruments than singing. So as to which Ado songs have great/interesting music that would also interest him? Backlight is a good rocksong. Where the wind blows is good music as well as singing.. Tot musica maybe for the amazing brass? Usseewa for just an all round great song that probably isnt much like any he has heard before?
The OST embodies Kratos redemption so perfectly. He is still a God, still as hard as ever but he has to be a father. He has to forgive himself and bring out a soft side of him that he never knew existed. He had to dig deep to find and raise boy with morals he was never taught as a child from his own father. To end the cycle of violence, He must be better.
One weird sould in that moment that I hear sounds very much like chains. A chain going over the metal edge, like a anchor. Kratos has a special relationship with chains, so I wouldn't be surprised if they included it. Is that the sound you were wondering about?
