"who would win for you?" (15:21) I think for me, the only score between these nominees that sounded like it was doing something really unique compared to the others was the Xenoblade 3 OST. I actually haven't played any of the nominated games--but as cinematic, powerful, and well-mixed as those cool Eldin Ring/Ragnarok/etc scores were, the Xenoblade examples spoke to me as being capital-g "Game" music. The others seemed to be leaning in the direction of appealing to mass appeal by playing it kind of safe with the compositional decisions from what I heard, and I'm a really big fan of the soloists and hearing those exposed melodies compared to hearing big sections of orchestra or choir (which, to be fair, I'm sure worked perfectly for those darker, epic, sprawling games)
@@DavidRussell323 some of the GOWR songs don’t have the “epic game” feeling, and those are some of my favorites. Honestly, I just love GOWR, and it’s music is one of the main reasons.
Personally think Xenoblade should've won this award. It's just so unique ! It creates some incredible soundscapes within its music and does some things I've never heard before in any game ! The use of the choir in the soundtrack is actually insane ! You need to hear the Moebius battle themes. Not to mention the flutes ! As you guessed, they're traditional japanese shinobue flutes, and the ones used in the music were custom made after the ones that the two main protagonists use in the game ! But ah well... no wins for Xenoblade apart from the medley part. The nominations are at least a fantastic step-up from all the previous games being completely ignored !
The primary reason I believe Xenoblade should have won best soundtrack isnt because its music is great, which it is. I believe it should have won because it's the game where the music most tied into the other systems of the game. It has incredible songs, but the songs play into the story and the gameplay far more than the other nominees this year.
@@babyjiren9676 It’s not really niche. It’s pretty big and was probably second only to pokemon for nintendo releases this past year. This also isn’t supposed to be the popularity award. This is the best music award. Not the ‘Sony paid us’ award.

Xenoblade's mix of orchestra and rock is what really makes me love it so much. And the addition of the flute in this game (along with electric guitars especially) makes it stand out so strongly.
@kixakii436 there are tons of musical highlights like that across not only xenoblade 3, but the whole series. I could name like 50 off the top of my head
I love this style of video! I just got done watching your Scarlet and Vioket reaction and I gotta say I agree with every point you made in both videos. You need to listen to more of the Xenoblade soundtracks, both 2 and 3 have some ABSOLUTE masterpieces that have brought me to tears. The "Vs Mobious" track on 3 has really worked its way into my heart and it really made me rethink the way I look at musical vocals in video game music. IMHO the Xenoblade series had THE BEST music in all of video games!
Just FYI, The Weight of Life is composed by Kenji Hiramatsu, not Yasunori Mitsuda. The bassline and drums are pretty much the signature parts of Hiramatsu's work. The song also references Engage the Enemy from XC1 and Counterattack from XC2, which are both Hiramatsu compositions. Considering how this song is the equivalent of those two tracks story-wise, it's highly likely that Hiramatsu did this track solo. Mitsuda is credited because of the way Japanese music credits work. EDIT: The flute melody in Weight of Life is from "Off-seer Mio," which is originally Mitsuda's composition, and as such his name is on the track, even if he didn't do this track himself.
Those are, in fact, traditional Japanese shinobue flutes in The Weight of Life! They play a major part in the narrative of the game - both the protagonist and deuteragonist are flautists - and so they appear throughout Xenoblade Chronicles 3's score. Not only that, Mitsuda actually commissioned the flutes that appeared in the game to use in composing and recording the soundtrack!
Your improvs on each of these soundtracks are amazing to listen to (as for your analysis) but that Plague Tale section got me wow ! That was beautiful, bravo 👏 As a fan of choir and strings I must say this game OST is a gift. It suits the mood perfectly (very emotional story but also very dark)
Xenoblade chronicles 3 deserved best music. Life sent on made me cry as soon as it's first played. Which is the first 3 hours of Xenoblade. I don't see God of War doing that.

Learned a lot and I can't wait to find out the winner at TGA tomorrow night!
Xenonlade had the best soundtrack but gow ragnarok and elden ring were two beasts sweeping up everything xenoblade had no chance. Xenonlade isn’t Tht good if a game compared to Elden ring or gow ragnarok
Although a lot of Elden Ring songs sound similar to other “Souls” songs, two of them really stand out to me. Hourah Loux’s theme, and Regal Ancestral Spirit. The former is good by itself, but when playing in game, it really amplifies every attack he does with a sense of power that says “you’re screwed.” And the latter is honestly one of the most beautiful orchestral pieces I’ve heard in video games. It’s so unique, and atmospheric, and just incredibly gorgeous.
Another epic reaction video!! It's always awesome to listen to your analysis and improvs! Wow, this really was the year of choir and with epic results! All the soundtracks sound incredible of course but to me the Xenoblade one caught my attention the most. Maybe because it really contrasted with the others, but I really liked it. Big hug 🎉🎉🎉🗣️

Its the only soundtrack out of all the ones that actually tied to the emotion of the scenes, characters, situation and the narrative. God of War is only known for battle and their shit.
I agree. It has much more defined melodies than the others. Something I don't like of God of War and Elden Ring is that they have big cool orchestration and choirs but then they feel too empty melody-wise. I can't recognize what's sounding in those songs, like if they lacked of structure somehow.
i’ve never played xenoblade or actually heard anything from xenoblade 3, but i have heard some songs from xenoblade 1 and 2 and if 3 is anything like those, then it really should’ve won
I think of the games nominated here, Xenoblade takes the cake. I do think its a crime that FF14 is never nominated for its soundtrack? Its absolutely bonkers . I would actually love to see you react to it
The flute of Xenoblade 3 was confirmed to be a Shinobue flute as you suspected it of traditional Asian origin or western in the style of Asian flutes. Perhaps there are multiple for recording, but a world’s leading craftsman on shinobue flutes helped design flutes for Noah and Mio’s flutes, at least the acoustic shape (since the actual performance flutes had paint jobs). Honestly, I feel the result and production background should’ve given Xenoblade 3’s OST an advantage.
I think it was a great year for the nominees. While I'm glad GOW won, and while the other nominees are incredible (wouldn't have been mad if anyone else won, either), A Plague Tale: Requiem is my personal champion of the year.
I think Ragnarok's soundtrack is quite good but if I had to pick one out of the nominees, even though I didn't play this game, Xenoblade Chronicles 3. I've listened to some of it and it reminds me so much of the Ys soundtracks, sometimes it's just hard to beat JRPG music. That being said none of the nominees were my personal favorite of the year. I loved the music in Nobody Saves The World.
Just discovered your channel. Great knowledge, great observations, and great charisma! And on the subject of best soundtrack of 2022, I'd give anything to see your thoughts on the track "No Turning Back" from A Plague Tale: Requiem. Unable to get it out of my head, and I've played all five of the nominees! Sheer brilliance from the string instruments.
I really loved the Horizon Forbidden West soundtrack personally. There are some beautiful themes in that OST. But I also love Bear McCreary, so I'm happy it won as well.
Xenoblade should win 10000000 times this. All Xenoblade games have the best videogame soundtracks ever (with persona's franchise too). Only those XC game made me cry in front of a video game. AAA again wins, it's just a question of money, sad.
To be fair, Junichi Mitsuda only worked in one song for the first Xenoblade Chronicles. He was one of the 4 or 5 composers of XC2. And same with XC3, there were 4 or 5 composers even though for this final game Mitsuda was the lead. He's always been one of my favorite composers since I discovered him in Inazuma Eleven.
Personally a plague tales soundtrack should have won in my book! The tracks have a lot of emotional weight behind them, and they relate to the actual plot of the game which each recurring leitmotif or music system representing certain characters or feelings.
I'm a big xenoblade fan so I was rooting for it of course, but I listened to all the soundtracks before the awards and was pleasantly surprised by a plague tale since I hadnt known that much about it beforehand
Every nominee has a fantastic soundtrack, but if I'm being honest, gow ranks at the very bottom of the list. I'm genuinely surprised it won this category.
Honestly you should listen to Xenoblade Chronicles 2 soundtrack as well. It's also very good. Especially "Still Move Forward" or "Counter-Attack". Everything music related is phenomenal with Xenoblade anyway. Even Xenoblade X soundtrack is more rock and electronic with vocals but very good as well, such as "Uncontrollable".
It's a very good but less catchy style theme and that's what I was specifically going for here as we can see. I didn't forget it, I just didn't mentioned it specifically among all the fantastic Xenoblade Chronicles 2 soundtracks there is 😉.

Tunic is my favorite Indie of the year, but my whole mind was so preoccupied with all the intricate puzzles and complicated world map that I can't remember a single song from it! There must be a reason why games with epic cinematics tend to get nominated and win, the whole attention is given to the music. I think at least Elden Ring and Xenoblade 3 had better songs to choose for the orchestra, but they weren't as cinematic

@@441meatloaf stop kidding yourself, The Entire Story, it's ups and downs till the ending is actually expressed through "God Of War" by McCarthy.
@@ॐIo Stop kidding yourself, god of war is shit when it comes to story lines.
@@441meatloaf tell me you didn't play god of war without telling me you didn't play god of war
i’ve never played xenoblade or actually heard anything from xenoblade 3, but i have heard some songs from xenoblade 1 and 2 and if 3 is anything like those, then it really should’ve won
3 is less bombastic but the composition is more impressive imo
I have not heard the elden ring soundtrack, and then when you started playing to music i was like: "wait, that is Brazilian national anthem"
Amazing pick you made! I haven't played it, but I've heard the music and it's great!
It is a National Crime that Frontiers wasn't even nominated.
Ragnarok's music really was amazing.
Thanks for making another one of these!
Xenoblade 2 is my favorite game soundtrack to this day.
(especially as a cellist there was some great cello in there)
Every nominee has a fantastic soundtrack, but if I'm being honest, gow ranks at the very bottom of the list. I'm genuinely surprised it won this category.
Because they just chose the most popular game, they always do this when it comes to the music award.
God of war stole best soundtrack from xenoblade 3
the award for best ost made me lose all hope i had for the game awards, xenoblade 3 was robbed
Xenoblade 3 should have been the winner in this category
Honestly you should listen to Xenoblade Chronicles 2 soundtrack as well. It's also very good. Especially "Still Move Forward" or "Counter-Attack". Everything music related is phenomenal with Xenoblade anyway. Even Xenoblade X soundtrack is more rock and electronic with vocals but very good as well, such as "Uncontrollable".
You forget the best one, drifting souls
It's a very good but less catchy style theme and that's what I was specifically going for here as we can see. I didn't forget it, I just didn't mentioned it specifically among all the fantastic Xenoblade Chronicles 2 soundtracks there is 😉.
@@BlackRover18The tomorrow with you, kingdom of uraya, Tantal, Torigoth, walking with you, Torna battle theme, you will recal our names, Mor Ardain and many more
Just discovered your channel.. it's amazing my friend congratz.. New follower! 🙌🙌 hope you ever get to do a video of Journey or Braid game soundtracks they are my favorites.. greetings from Mexico 🇲🇽🇲🇽😁😁
I LOVE the God of War Ragnarok OST. Even better than the previous, which is quite an accomplishment.
Xenoblade deserve it 200%
That show was a total scam.
This award should have gone to sonic frontiers or it should have at least been nominated
I love Bear McCreary, but this really should have gone to Xenoblade
Please react to xenoblade chronicles 3 Moebius theme
TUNIC’s OST being overshadowed by all the triple A titles this year was a real shame
I enjoyed the music from all the games listed, but the fact that TUNIC wasn’t even nominated is an absolute travesty and it deserves so much better than that
Tunic is my favorite Indie of the year, but my whole mind was so preoccupied with all the intricate puzzles and complicated world map that I can't remember a single song from it! There must be a reason why games with epic cinematics tend to get nominated and win, the whole attention is given to the music. I think at least Elden Ring and Xenoblade 3 had better songs to choose for the orchestra, but they weren't as cinematic
It was a just a popularity contest tbh, musically Xeno is the best.
Short answer, no, it didnt
Out of all the great soundtracks he chose for ER, he chose Mohg’s 😭😭😭
Cry more.
elden ring should have won it but gamers were too focused on those insane boss fights and the adraline rush xD
Bro Sonic Frontiers Music
👋 Elden Ring- Ancestor boss music is best folk music in game
Ender Lilies OST reaction would be amazing :)
All I see is xenoblade should’ve won and I’m literally the biggest xenoblade fan sooooooo I’m totally baised towards this game and it’s music it should’ve won
Elden ring is absolutely superb.
Make more megaman soundtracks. You are awesome man
Short answer: NO, GoW did *NOT* deserve to win best soundtrack.
Yes
A plague tale requiem should have won
Ngl, I’m biased, but i believe Xenoblade should’ve won
I really enjoyed this video! you made me get even more exited by pointing things i didnt notice before (just know that i like, but dont know why is so epic). Great job SPG!
Ola! That's awesome! Thank you Tay!
brutal
Elden Ring deserved this and honestly it’s not close at all
Good!
Se me hace un insulto, una ofenda y una patada en la cara, que xenoblade chronicles 3 no ganara el premio al mejor soundtrack del año. 😫😫
No it really did not deserve to win at all lol. Xenoblade and Elden Ring have far far superior soundtracks
Cap
@@azurlune1877 im sorry but this is not even an unpopular opinion.
@@azurlune1877 that's a very popular opinion
@@azurlune1877 This is a very popular opinion. Like from a soundtrack production standpoint alone Xenoblade 3 deserved it way more. There were no custom handcrafted hurdygurdies for GOW, do you know what got a world-leading expert craftsperson on their highlight instrument? Xenoblade 3, and their custom shinobue flutes modelled after the Agnian and Kevesi dimensions/sizes.
these are all great but I have to go with xenoblade
No it didn't. The proof? Go listen to Xenoblade Chronicles 3's over *12* hours of soundtrack and come back to me afterwards. Tell me with a straight face that it isn't miles better than Dad of War's generic hollywood-esque OST.
You don't need to shit on a game to adore another.
What even is xenoblade 💀💀 some weeb shit
GoW was the only real contender in music.
Honestly God of War winning best score just tells me that the game awards are just biased towards western games
Elden Ring won goty lol
Ahh yes fromsoftware the western game company 💀
Deserved
Omori part 3 ? :3
I also like other stuff you know?
@@LionmightOfficial and thats okay 👍🏼
I guess the sound on GOW & Elden Ring are so generic and hard to value it's originality
XBC3 on the other hand, had the flute hand crafted, it is very precious
The industry hates Xenoblade.
The industry hates jrpgs
@@cristianoducceschi3547 Indeed
I am... Confused? I did not expect so many people to like Xenoblade chronicles music?
I really don't like the fact it's just like... 12 hours of either anime music or generic action music. Also, the fact they used some weird flute doesnt hold any meaning to me as it doesn't make me enjoy the music more? I really think Elden ring should have won
It's called "personal preferences".
@@LionmightOfficial I get that... I was just very surprised
@@LionmightOfficial also, thank you for taking the time to reply to a comment from a decently old video
I get the "generic action music" part but what's supposed to be "anime music"
@@koj30 I can't really... Point it out specifically? But it's just something that I've heard before in anime and jrpg soundtracks?
