Is The Eclipse GSX The Last Affordable Turbo 90s Icon?!

- Today on the show we're driving a 1997 Mitsubishi Eclipse GSX! A car I've always been curious about and one of the great 90s turbo DSM cars that is just too irresistible to anyone with a strict budget and great taste. It still amazes me how affordable these cars are in the midst of the modern turbo Japanese craze going on in the used market right now. With undeniable 90s design, a 4G63 under the hood and a 50/50 awd system that's putting in work whether you want it to or not, the GSX just might be the best/worst first car money can buy. So much potential yet so much that could go wrong!

Thanks for having me Marcus! I loved filming and now watching this!
If you ever need any hard to find engine parts for your car let me know I have more than a few in a storage unit including a complete 7 bolt short block. also have a bunch of 6 bolt stuff. honestly it doesnt take much to keep these engines alive. Start by disabling the clutch starter safety switch, which will allow you to start the engine with out pressing the clutch in, that is the biggest contributor to crank walk. (pressing the clutch on start up puts pressure on a the engine thrust bearing while cranking, which causes collective wear on that bearing which is the major contributor to "crank walk") Also deleting the balance shafts is beneficial, which allows you to remove un needed rotating weights in the engine block and the balance shaft belt which when it fails is a contributor to timing belt failure which can be catastrophic. The only other major weak point of the 7 bolt engine is the connecting rod bolts, if you replace those with arp bolts you can safely push the engine to its max potential on your evo3 16g turbo.
Hey man nice car, im from van too and have a gsx, we should cruise sometime!
Glad you could make it out! Just be careful with the pink slip eh xD You've got a gem there
@@andrewprasad3146 we totally should! Hit me up in instagram
You had a white GSX turbo and you eff'd it up by totally BLOWING THE PAINT OUT'A YOUR ASS all over it, return it to original and watch the value skyrocket, clean up the engine bay, this is a car you'll wish you kept original
The 2G will always have a special place in my heart.
99 gsx has a special place in my garage
1G for me
Completely agree
I'm on my third and fourth one right now. It's like a bad girlfriend. You keep going back. But she's fun
I own a 1991 3000gt VR-4. Runs and drives perfectly. Just got done rebuilding my BMW, about 400whp. The VR-4 is next, shooting for 700 wheel. Then I got a 2003 Jetta GLI VR6 that will be rebuilt after the VR-4.
2G GSX will be in the collection very soon.
I will always have a soft spot for the second generation Eclipse. My mother had a GS-T and that was the car I learned to drive manual in.
Your mother has great taste in cars then.
For me it's the 1st gen talon. My friend's older brother had a TSi AWD with a bigger turbo and it blew my mind. It was the first fast car I ever rode in.
@@jwuonog I would honestly trade my 08 350z for this car right now.
My mother had a Eagle Talon TSI AWD (2nd Gen), although it was an automatic my Father didn't care and just modified it by crushing the BOV- resulted in a large boost in horsepower he even managed to beat a Supra once- Or at least that's what I'm told. I loved sitting in it because of the smell of the interior.
Sadly the car currently is most likely in a scrap yard as the person we sold it to told us that he just found a large amount of rust developing on the underbody and it was not worth keeping around anymore.

"not to be taken as seriously as an evo" red demon would like a word.🤣 I just picked up my 3rd dsm recently because i missed my old ones and wanted something that is a better daily than my truck or rx7. these things are the last unsung gems of the 90s japanese bubble.
Nice I think im on my 11th DSM lol I currently own 2 GSXs one big turbo straight line the other a small 16g i think its more fun around town as it spools faster
I remember when these were everywhere but now at least in the northeast they are like ghost. Problem with the GSX was limited production and weak drivetrains. I knew a guy that had Spyder GSX swapped and could not keep transmissions to last much past 500hp. But realize this was 2000-2001. Parts now are becoming an issue. Rust has killed many... Kids with dreams of living the "Fast and Furious" and if you can find a clean one its like buying a clean 90s civic or 240. Rare and getting very expensive.....
98 GSX was my first car, miss it so much. These cars are so hard to find. Low mileage good shape and stock are not cheap..
No such thing as a stock gsx
@@erendyalatorre7785I got one 99 gsx stock, expect CD player
@@edtan9145 nice. I had a gsx and it had a built 6bolt swap with a tdo6 20g in 1999 to 2002 in college. I miss it so much. Now that many of us are mid life crisis now turning 40, we’re buying these up so prices will only go up. I’m selling some company stock and budgeting 15k for a clean 2Gb in the spring.
Glad to see you did a video on one of these. They are for sure one of the last affordable 90's turbo cars. I wanted one of these years before F&F came out. But I ended up with an evo instead. So not complaining.
I remember my cousin had a white one back in the day, when the car scene was "underground "
Damn I miss those cars! I had the 90gsx and 90 talon tsi AWD. It was when buschur racing was a hitter on the scene and the 4g63t were huge on their list. Keep up the excellent work!
Gen 1, man I wish I could find a clean one here in the DMV especially a talon.
Miss information: Evo 1, 2, and 3 all had the same engine layout with basically the same engine. They flipped it 180° for the 4 onwards.
Yes! Was talking about the 3/4/5 specifically as I mentioned in the video. I actually didn't know the 3 had the same layout though so thank you! Makes sense, because from the 4 onwards the Evo became a beast and unfortunately the Eclipse was left behind :(
@@RoadsUntraveled Evo left the eclipse behind? The evo is still trying to catch a 2g and 1g eclipse in the qtr mile....
@@chadleary9361 well in terms of weight and handling the EVO is better specially If we apply this in the circuit category .
I'm a 1g owner and I'll be the first to say the Evo 5 and up is a whole other machine. But the Evo 3 witch gave the Evo it's name and the 1gs are the same car except body brakes and third gear. Evos are monsters no denying that, let's not kid our selves
@@donellmecca.booker5969 I use to own an Evo6 and it was okay I suppose. I paid $7,500 a few years ago. Laughable people want $25k+ now. 😂
I was sooo fortunate to have once owned a black 1997 Eclipse GSX. Grey leather interior, chrome OEM wheels. It was my second car. I learned so much from it; modding, tuning, wrenching, fabbing, etc. I have had many other cars since, but none have ever compared to that car. I still say with a few tweaks... the 2G body could be a new car today. Still so modern looking.
Can we appreciate the kid letting his buddy’s drive especially being so young they are all going to remember this car forever that’s so awesome 👍🏻
Good luck finding one in nice condition!
And if you do it’s not gonna be less than 15k
Great video, this was very enjoyable.
Getting a ride in one of these pretty much made me fall in love with cars❤️
My first car was a red 2G eclipse and even though it wasn’t a turbo model it was manual at least and I was hooked after that. Great cars so hard to find clean and not molested.
That was mine also. 96 GS manual. Wasn't fast but was fun to drive.
lol the bubblebutt rear end is what makes this car. love it!
when i was 19 these cars were EVERYWHERE! i miss them. you just don't are them anymore. these Eclipse don't show their age with that body design💪
Whenever you see one on the road today and running you already see a Unicorn
Big facts
the 2nd gen Eclipse will always have a special place on my list of cars i like.
it just has something that appeals to me
One of my goals in life is to have one of my 1gs featured on this channel, keep up the amazing content Marcus 💪🏽
Yeah need 1G featured big time!
I will have one soon… just truly a beautiful fucking car i cant describe the happiness i feel when i talk about this car
A whole year ago and i finally have it ❤️
The fact that it is AWD is so awesome
I had a 95 GS eclipse and man, I miss that car. The 2g Eclipse was one of my all time favorite tuner cars.
I always loved the tail lights. Such a gorgeous car.
saw the ad of marketplace i am saving up for this thing this is gonna be my first love
Man just be glad you even got one I have a 2006 Toyota Corolla
the eclipse is a gt tour version of the evo, thats how i look at it! great video marcus!
U mean of the evo 1, 2 , N or 3 cos Lan Evo 4-9 are totally different beasts.
It was 2005 and I remember seeing a red GSX Turbo for sale at an auto shop in my city they wanted 5000$ car was clean low mileage & sounded like a dream!
Great video. Love my 99 GST. Original owner and 100% stock. Garaged and covered. My kids think it's from the "olden days." I guess maybe it is.
I've only seen 1 gst that was years ago .. never seen a gsx in person... saw a clean Galant vr4 like 2 months ago .. that was a first for me.. I got all excited my dad looked at me like damn kid is on drugs .
I'm pretty sure this was the first GSX I had ever been up close to in person! hahaha I can relate.. we're a different generation
@@RoadsUntraveled lol yeah I would say so.. but thats awesome about the gsx though, the rare models of cars like the gsx , ae86, vr4, Gt-Four etc are in my mind almost mythical legends these days .. . For some of us I should say ...
You need to KEEP that car! Anything 90s is GOLD!!!!!!!
This aged well 👌
Dude you're the same age as me and my big swarm of these, which were also dirt cheap, in like 2002. I had a 98 GSX, my buddy had a 97 Talon, there was no EVO yet. This was how you had a cool car in 2003.
A couple things. The internals of rear diff in the Evo is a direct swap into the DSM diff housing. Just need the appropriate inboard diff cups. The engine and drivetrain were direct swaps from the Evo I to III. When the IV came out, that’s when they swapped the motor around.
The 2nd gen eclipse is a beautiful car and more people need to appreciate it.
Those body lines will be sexy in 1999,2009. Or 2059 i say the car is timeless.
@@georgedrizos6204 indeed. It has to be one of the most beautiful Mitsubishi I've known
Ditto
Great video. The talon and the eclipse are very serious cars, the record holding h pattern 2G eclipse has a 6.9 second 1/4 and the evo is higher in the 7’s. But evos are more renown for their handling and heritage
Great Video.. good to see something new out on an old favorite 👌
#90seclipse #dsmturbo #awddsm #awd2g #2geclipse #turbocar
what a beauty my friend
Rear viscous LSD was an option on the 2g DSM's. All AWD DSM's had a viscous LSD center differential from the factory. You can swap in a clutch-type rear LSD from an EVO, but you have to get creative with the rear axles, and Quaife makes a front LSD that's a direct drop-in.
Good to know!
Yes!! Those seats!!! Yes!!
Still, 20yrs after I got my first 2G, I still love the look front to back, the bubble good, and "fat ass", especially the cockpit interior... Watching this, I'm tempted to go pick up 2G beater and use it as a daily... , Except with a stock turbo, but an eBay exhaust, and the loudest well I can find LOL (& instead of coilover, probably just come to Springs
Took me a year to find my dream car the 99 eclipse gsx. Been 2 years and haven't found many that were just as nice.
My dad bought a super clean silver 96 right before the first f&f came out. Too bad it was the base rs model but at least it was a manual and lowered (until he put it back to stock)
But that’s how I found about these cars and always wanted the gsx but never had the chance to buy one and unfortunately I probably won’t get to now.
My first was a 1g, then 2 GSX's, both with 400whp and would snap an axle at least once a month (I would race every Friday Saturday night back then), before I moved onto a GS-T and only had 2 axles to snap lol
Ah the 90s Japanese tuner cars.... what a great time to be alive. I always wanted a 3rd gen ITR....only managed to buy a 97 GS-R but it was still an awesome car.
2nd gen Eclipse is not Japanese
@@GarrettDWalters1 actually in 93 and onward sole ownership of DSM passed to Mitsubishi and it was renamed MMMA in 95. Just because the car is made in America doesn't mean it's not Japanese if the company making the car is based in Japan. Unless you also think Nissan and Toyota are American and Dodge is Mexican since they have facilities there too?
@@SCTitan06 The 1G and 2G were designed by Crystler though and only feature a Mitsu motor in the top 2 trims. These cars were never even sold in Japan.
I see a cool air intake, he's got a NOS fogger system and a T4 turbo. I see an AIC controller, it has direct port nitrous injection, and a stand alone fuel management system. Not a bad way to spend $10,000
I own a 1995 GSX and yes they are the best! I Have mine built, that being said a 650hp GSX smash's, I think its best to keep them stock but only if reselling
'I'm 18 and this is my first car, a 97 GSX"... Bro my first car was a 98 Camry, I'm 22 with a 99 GS, and I've been hunting for a GS-T, GSX for years... Ahh the pain, Clean ride man looks great, you're crazy lucky.

I've owned a 2g since 2004... had my GST for 14 years.. got totaled and I now have a 98GSX... 👌👌 these cars will always... always have a place in my heart .
I've been thinking about getting another 2G for a project or something after losing my daily GS some months ago. I still miss that thing...

i had an evo 2 and it has the same powertrain and everything as this gsx. my evo was the fastest car all my friends had driven. just a bigger turbo, forged engine parts and some cooling mods and fuel mods and the car was insanely fast. like 4-5 seconds to 100 km/h. so i recommend this to everyone. you can be out there with boosted supra and gtr bois cuz this car keeps up with them with some money thrown at it
Lol im not to far from you guys, in Kelowna and just finishing up a full build on my 2g gsx.
Glad to see your enjoying your car, its your choice but I do have one suggestion... get a winter beater or that car will be full of rust in no time after a couple winters.

One of my dream cars. I regret not buying that 98 GSX Back in 03. I was thinking... I can get one later... 2021... like finding a needle in a haystack.
One of best looking 90s car

I had a FBO and tuned GST spyder that I was going to convert into awd. Way back in 04.

This was my first car all black gsx awd I think it was a 1999 if I remember I sold it for an 02 wrx and I wish I never did that I kick my shelf all the time for not holding on to that car it was so good .then traded my wrx for a ford focus svt witch was an even bigger mistake lol but the gsx will always be one of my fav cars ever. Watch that crank walk lol best mod too get is ecm link I think it's called been long time .rc injectors lol man I'm old
I just finished swapping my buds 420a 2g, they seem simple enough but my trim liking would be a gsx 99 spec
Not 100% accurate on the Evo diff swap, it does swap straight in, you just need non LSD axles to do it. Not a huge deal.
Edit: Not to be taken as seriously as an Evo? Go look at which chassis has a faster 1/4.
Doesn’t the gsx come with a 4g63?
@@TD-en3np And the GST, and Talon TSI and TSI AWD
@@autotalon I didn’t even know that. Doesn’t it share something else from the evo as well? I don’t remember but it might’ve been the awd system as the evo 3?

Now you have gotten my attention Sir. First the e63, now this. Whats next? The flippin 3000gt vr4?
He did a video on one a while back. You should search for it, it is great!
Nice car. I've always liked those. It's a shame about Mitsubishi. Not only do they not make interesting cars anymore, they insult people who own the old classics by reusing the names on terrible commuter boxes. "Eclipse Cross"? Shameful.
I have a 99’ Auto GSX with 76k original miles, very clean
Need to review a 1g Dsm next
Beautiful eclipse. Congrats
It does come factory with the same forged internals as the evo 3 it just had a smaller turbo
Just about! Pistons and turbo are not the same.
The 9:1 Evo 3 pistons are no bueno, ringland fails on std engines, Evo 1-2 8,5:1 Pistons were fine. The Evo rods are nothing to write home about either. Evos have 530cc injectors too. With a fuel pump and regulator, chip, open filter and 3" exhaust youre looking at about 370 bhp with an Evo 3 so theyre really tunable. They´ve got much shorter and tighter gears and weigh about 400lbs less than a GSX so whole other animal on the road.
4G63 iconic
i have the exact some car just green was also my first car im 17, my mom saved it for me actually and i damn love it🔥
Good thing you you tubers haven’t got the chance to upsell / bring the price of my favorite sw20 mr2 yet 😅
You must've missed all the videos from 2015 - 2020 that I filmed with mine :) Manual 90s cars were just going to naturally rise anyways, YT just accelerates the process. Our generation now has plenty of cash to snatch up the cars they grew up on.. higher demand = higher values!
Picked up a all stock gsx 5 speed last week. My bad whoever else was trying to buy it hahaha
