Wow. This is a real trip down memory lane for me. I bought a brand new racing green 1995 GSX. It was the first "new" car I ever bought. I LOVED that thing. In the mid-90s the Archer Brothers were racing these (the Talon, to be precise), but they were friend of mine and they hooked me up with suspension, bigger turbo, bigger rims, cold air intake, exhaust, the works. The comments are full of people lamenting the good 'ol days of 90s era Mitsus, how they were awesome, and how today the company sucks a bag of dicks. I would agree, but the fact is that we as auto enthusiasts make up a fraction of vehicle sales, so it's always a wise bet for companies to invest in cars that pander to the average driver. Reliable, fuel efficient transportation for the masses. That's why fun cars like these are out and why the Colt exists. Mitsubishi might not be the best company out there, but they're not stupid either. If they're entire line-up were Eclipses and Evos, they'd go bankrupt within a month. For the record, I drive an '07 Eclipse GT.
my thoughts exactly. someday, mitsubishi will come out with a new Eclipse. for now, they need to continue rebuilding their sales in the US by selling cars that will sell well before they return to sports cars. I, too, wanted an Eclipse, but I'm perfectly fine with my 2014 Lancer ES.
This makes me so much more excited to get working on my 1997 Eclipse GSX for my channel. :D Mine is gunna need a lot of resto, but it makes such wonderful turbo noises. Let's go!
Sad how Mitsubishi's future in North America is in question, but other than the Evo and the Eclipse they really didn't have anything unique to offer (at least in the US). I couldn't name more than about 5 of their other offerings post 2001.
wiiplayer9revisited ' Last I heard they were planning to go the way of Suzuki and pull out of the US market. I live a mile from a Mitsubishi dealership and have yet to see a brand new one driving around town other than cars with dealer plates.
pbfloyd13 well you are (paraphrasing the Eclipse commercial), "very much mistaken," especially when Mitsu's sales have gone up nearly 25% in 2014, over the same period in 2013. The great recession is what essentially almost did Mitsu in despite the 4G Eclipse selling well prior, but they have since recovered from that. And, the all new 2016 Outlander is coming soon. As for your Mitsu dealer, it sounds to me like they need new marketing techniques, as the local Mitsu dealers we have in Houston sell like wildfire.
pbfloyd13 The only reason they're dying out now is because they're stuck in 2005. Even the V6 in the Outlander puts out only 220 something horses like the 3rd gen eclipse from over a decade ago. They need to take a page from Hyundai/Kia and seriously revamp their lineup.
I had a deep green 1995 Talon version I bought from my local Chrysler dealer . Loved the styling and handling . Had some transmission issues w the automatic. Sold it the next year
Lumbar and memory seats had you wincing with pain after 50 miles making road trips near impossible. This is why I'm swapping mine out with aftermarket ones soon. No more pains in the ass... then lower back... then spine...
Just looked it up at GS-X fully-loaded was $23,000 in 1995, today 2021 as I write this, that is $40,600 lol! So a fully loaded GSX was 40 Grand! Today that buys you a 5.0, Camaro SS, or a Scat Pack/Hemi charger/Challenger not to mention the 400z, Kia Stinger, Genesis coupe or 2.0 Supra and used German cars. Wow........
I had 4 of these cars,87 Mitsubishi cordia 5 Spd turbo, 91 eagle talon 5spd tsi awd,93 laser 5spd,1994 eagle talon,fantastic cars,had them between 20 years of fun,racing,citations lol
Mitsubishi was very underrated in the 90's. Especially their audio tech options. Who even thinks to put an analog EQ in the dash? My dad had a 95 Montero SR and that thing was loaded.
I remember right around this time I "raced" a first gen Talon at a stoplight. It turned out to be a TSi (AWD turbo). I was ahead off the line but once he spooled up, damn he blew by me so fast. LOL These cars used to be everywhere. I wouldn't mind having one today, but I wouldn't want AWD, too much extra baggage that I don't need, don't want to deal with or worry about. FWD would be cool though.
The people in high school who obsessed over these as their absolute dream cars were annoying. However, I would dearly love to see cars like this again from Mitsubishi, Honda, Toyota, Mazda, etc. now 😢. Also enjoyed the brief bit of Whitney on the radio from her heyday! I wish I’d been an adult in the mid-90’s with the means to enjoy it more.
I wanted a 1995 Eclipse or Talon so, so, so bad. So about a month after I turned 16, my dad helped me buy a brand new car. He made a substantial down payment and signed for the loan, and I made the payments. Since he was helping pay for the car, he had a substantial say in the "yes or now" of the car I got. I got him into the Eagle dealer and he wasn't having any of the Talon, at all. "Too small. A death trap." So he convinced me to look at the Chrysler Sebring Coupe. I thought that was a grandma car, so I said no. The next weekend, I saw an ad in the Newspaper (yes, newspaper) for the 1995 Dodge Avenger. I got a forest green one and every time I saw an Eclipse or Talon after that, I signed. The Avenger was no sports car and quite honestly, a pile of junk. I sold it in 1998 for a used 1995 Audi A4. Should have kept the Dodge because it was less problematic than the Audi, that's for certain.
The last great looking eclipse! The later generations really looked goofy to me, like a bloated cartoon/caracature of a sports car. Just look at a 2nd gen next to any later gen eclipse and it's comical.
Simply impressive. 105 ft braking out does many high performance cars today. And no other 4 cylinder engines could produce those 0-60 numbers from the 90s period.......which for the record GST official time is 6.3 sec to 60.
Race Warz is starting up in a few weeks near me, would you recommend something that comes in a "big" size and is best found in pairs? I need an extra kick that I won't engage "too soon".
Man what happened to the small, sporty, cheap, stylish 2 door Japanese coupe??? Seems like every manufacturer had at least a couple different "sport compact" cars back in the 90's. The 1st and 2nd gen Eclipse is one of my favorites(pre 2000 models), along with the 1992 Prelude, 1992 Civic coupe, 1994 Integra, 1990 Celica(love the pop up headlights and All-trac version). Nissan had some cool stuff in Japan that never made it here, the Silvia coupe with a turbo 4 cylinder was pretty hot stuff. Now days you have 2 to 4 cars in this segment, depending on how you define it. The Civic Coupe, Toyota GT-86, Subaru BR-Z, and maybe the Hyundia Veloster, IMO has the same soul as those old sport compacts even if the shape and door count are different.
@@conroypaw Was something like a when it was new $12,000, 100hp 1995 Honda Civic LX coupe really that expensive on insurance??? I know performance variants, like the V8 Camaros and Mustangs were stupid expensive to insure, but I doubt a base model Toyota Celica or Mazda MX-3 were any more expensive than other normal new cars back then.

I found a 97 eclipse gsx for 8k right now. 85k original miles, owned by a older lady up until 10k miles ago when her grandson bought it. think I should go for it? the gsx is rare around here, especially in the condition that it's in
No it sold really fast
@@austinsolo3135 i know this post is 3 years old. Hopefully you found one
@@austinsolo3135 sorry to hear about that friend. I understand your frustration. I tried to find a 240sx a few years back and had a hell of a time. They were either drift cars, ragged out or automatics.
I remember going with my dad to test drive the GSX when it came out, and I thought it was one of the coolest cars around... when I was probably 9. Still a cool car.
I thought these had the best drivers layout. The handling and the 5 speed stick was awesome!
Oh Mitsubishi were have you gone! You were once so good! Cry! Lol
***** why are their sales going up then?
Oh, don't you worry. Now they have "blessed" us with the Eclipse Cross! /s
I had one in high school. I was the coolest kid in school because of it.
rip Paul Walker
Jamaican Me Crazy it was doms car tho if u remember..
It was actually the governments car if YOU remember..
Gs-t should have been rear wheel. This was my dream car 20 years ago.
Motorweek's acceleration tests always made me laugh. Basically hit the rev limiter and dump the clutch or neutral drop it.
OMG!! that deep orange color just made me remember my 1st car, 95 eclipse RS, same color with a 5spd manual...damn I miss that car
a really good looking car that looks go 20 + years later
This makes me so much more excited to get working on my 1997 Eclipse GSX for my channel. :D
Mine is gunna need a lot of resto, but it makes such wonderful turbo noises. Let's go!
A year later and I'm almost ready to do the first start. XD
Sad how Mitsubishi's future in North America is in question, but other than the Evo and the Eclipse they really didn't have anything unique to offer (at least in the US).
I couldn't name more than about 5 of their other offerings post 2001.
pbfloyd13 why are their sales going up then?
wiiplayer9revisited '
Last I heard they were planning to go the way of Suzuki and pull out of the US market.
As for your Mitsu dealer, it sounds to me like they need new marketing techniques, as the local Mitsu dealers we have in Houston sell like wildfire.
wiiplayer9revisited okay :-I
pbfloyd13 The only reason they're dying out now is because they're stuck in 2005. Even the V6 in the Outlander puts out only 220 something horses like the 3rd gen eclipse from over a decade ago. They need to take a page from Hyundai/Kia and seriously revamp their lineup.
Sold my 99gsx when my first kid was on the way. Tried looking for one and can't find a single one, dang(
I had a deep green 1995 Talon version I bought from my local Chrysler dealer . Loved the styling and handling . Had some transmission issues w the automatic. Sold it the next year
Such a cool car. I wish Mitsubishi hadn't ruined it's legacy
Still a force to be reckoned with on the streets. Love all my Mitsubishi toys, Talon TSi AWD, 2x 4g63 swapped Mighty max, Mitsubishi 3000gt VR4.
Lumbar and memory seats had you wincing with pain after 50 miles making road trips near impossible. This is why I'm swapping mine out with aftermarket ones soon. No more pains in the ass... then lower back... then spine...
I love this video so much
It gives me a feeling of such joy
Went to buy a 98 model and loved it....but for some reason I got something else. Always regretted not having that 98 Eclipse.
My old Saturn's transmission had "fuzzy logic." Never knew what that did then and not now either.
Fuzzy logic is what I have when I wake up in the morning and still haven't had my coffee.
ah the gsx it was basically our Evo before they gave us the Evo in 2003. my cousin had a 98 gsx and it was a fucking beast back in the day
Just looked it up at GS-X fully-loaded was $23,000 in 1995, today 2021 as I write this, that is $40,600 lol! So a fully loaded GSX was 40 Grand! Today that buys you a 5.0, Camaro SS, or a Scat Pack/Hemi charger/Challenger not to mention the 400z, Kia Stinger, Genesis coupe or 2.0 Supra and used German cars. Wow........
Still great looking cars today.
We did 100mph in a 1996 model white with tan leather interior. It was a turbocharged version. Amazing car. It was brand new when my buddy got it.
I had 4 of these cars,87 Mitsubishi cordia 5 Spd turbo, 91 eagle talon 5spd tsi awd,93 laser 5spd,1994 eagle talon,fantastic cars,had them between 20 years of fun,racing,citations lol
Back then before TopGear , all the car reviews seem to be too ordinary but i still love it
We needed these here in Australia
What happened?! These boys left the equivalent hands and toyotad in their shadows. I used to see these things everywhere as a kid.
5:10 Brian Roberts, Motorweek's Executive Producer
If Mitsubishi made cars like this now they would sell like crazy
These cars are so rare no adays I hardly ever see them. Still very good looking and that GSX is great! I'd take any one someday
I named my son Talon. I just didnt tell mom it was a car for 6 months
😥Mitsubishi! What happened? You used to be a contender!!😭👍
LOL
These cars used to be everywhere. I wouldn't mind having one today, but I wouldn't want AWD, too much extra baggage that I don't need, don't want to deal with or worry about. FWD would be cool though.
The 97 GS AND GST Were great looking. They had the round fog lights aggressive front bumper the five star rims and the high spoiler.
Aggressive? More aggressive!?! The damn thing is smiling at me!!! No these Eclipses were definitely not as aggressive as the 1Gs until their facelift.
Tim Beck ones like this no orther mods maybe just maybe but behind that smile is a bada*ss engine
7-bolt crankwalk no thanks
Crank Walk was mostly fixed for the '98 model year and still wasn't AS prevalent as people say. Besides the 6 bolt was only for two years.
No thanks, I'll keep my 90 GSX
I don't blame you! Sweet car.
He called the styling of the Eclipse aggressive. Can this show get anymore nineties?
The last Eclipse generation I liked.
Finally john davis, full instrumentation!
LOL! I know, right?!
John Davis is America's Jeremy Clarkson and that's a good thing we like you sir
I can’t believe they let these money makers fade away.
GS-T FTW
You are correct, 3rd generation eclipse look so shitty. Look more like a honda accord with rear spoiler. Rather than a pocket rocket.
Simply impressive. 105 ft braking out does many high performance cars today. And no other 4 cylinder engines could produce those 0-60 numbers from the 90s period.......which for the record GST official time is 6.3 sec to 60.
mitsu pls revive the eclipse and lan evo!
60 miles in 6.7 seconds, that's still fast TODAY!
Iloveak123 no its not. Kia suvs do that now
Iloveak123 my 2000 Honda does that, not being funny...
@@idontlikecops1 put a boost controler on it an you can make it do 5.0 for like 100 bucks
They do 6.3 when you actually know how to drive
@@Khi.252 no it doesn't
The skyrocketing cost of car insurance help put an end to this market segment.
5:35 “The rear seat is best used for extra storage”
You mean it’s best used for extra NOS bottles
