One thing I can add to this discussion: lane width on the highway can influence how fast you think you're going. If I drive on a newer bit of highway with wider lanes than I'm used to, I literally have to remind myself that yes, I'm still doing 100kph and yes, that still means I need plenty of braking space in case that truck right therOHMYGOD
Thing I never understood about breaking space is that no car is going to instantly stop in front of you. They still need to slow down themsleves if they break, so yoh really just need a fast enough reaction to start breaking, not to actually stop.
@Lukas G The short answer: information and reaction times. The long answer: it's been tested years ago that your reaction time is about half the total braking distance. So if the driver in front of you notices something bad in front of him/her and starts braking hard, your brain in normal relaxed driving mode is not aware of this until your eyes register the brake lights, tell your brain, your brain tells your eyes to lock on the brake lights, the eyes send the info back that yes, those are really brake lights in your direct path, your brain tells your leg to start moving off one pedal and onto the other, and then the time it takes for your body and the car's mechanics to do what's needed to get the calipers onto your brakes. That's half the distance already gone. Even with sufficient distance to the car in front of you, your car will need to work hard to keep your crash stop from becoming a crash. (Remember that Top Gear braking distance thing they did? Yeah that was bullsh-- I mean 'comedy'.) The next thing: when a car in front of a close string of cars on the highway brakes a bit, the car behind it tends to brake a little harder to compensate for the cars being suddenly much closer (because of the already mentioned reaction speeds). The car behind that needs to brake even harder, the one behind that even more, etc., until cars end up stopping completely in a traffic jam or pile-up. Keeping enough distance does much to soften this effect, as cars are not 'suddenly much closer' -- you don't need to compensate -- and therefore helps to avoid traffic jams & pile-ups behind you. Finally, there are situations where the car in front of you does brake faster than its brakes could do. For example, when the driver doesn't pay attention and rams another car. Or spins out of control. In those cases, a good distance means the difference between just touching your brake pedal the moment you hit the other vehicle, or driving much slower by that point. In other words, the difference between potentially murdering people and a stoved-in front bumper. In an ideal world, you get the information about the obstacle the same time as the car in front of you does. In an ideal world, your cars are driving on a similar surface, with similar tyres, have the same type of brakes and they are equally well maintained, and no-one ever gets cut off, falls asleep, loses grip, has broken brake lights or spins out. We do not live in an ideal world.

That's why I enjoy driving our Brabus Smart more than our Kia E-Niro with twice the horsepower and way faster acceleration. (7.5 s to 100 km/h instead of 10 s to 100km/h)
Lol, you can just control cars acceleration or velocity. Jerk is out of your control Mathematically: ds^3/d^3t (Dj:da/dt da:dv/dt dv:ds/dt) Jerk is the rate of change of acceleration. Take it as the difference between acceleration of time A and time B.

I think it was good, but it just didn’t feel right. They could have kept it going and let him get more comfortable in front of the camera and maybe switch up the writer for it
I think it would be a good show if they just cut out the arbitrary scoring bit. Like if the show was just a look at the comparison between two cars or whatever and there was no attempt to declare one as "winner" it would be fine.
Its accurate too even without the experiment they did. Once you put all those on your car you are always aware that all the cops in your area are looking at you with tickets in their eyes.

The problem with the blindfold test is I doubt you're actually "sensing" what speed you're traveling-since, as you mentioned earlier in the video, you can't feel speed. I'd imagine what's happening in the blindfold experiment is that you're feeling the car accelerate and you're remembering the intensity and duration of that acceleration and matching that up mentally with your past experience with acceleration, same thing with deceleration. So the blindfold test is probably more of a mental equation than a "body sensation". Also, a car with stiffer suspension will let you feel more of the imperfections of the road at speed, which will also give you a pretty good idea of how fast you're traveling. Not because of the speed itself, but because your body knows what going over a bump in the road at 15 mph feels like vs 60 mph. So, it stands to reason that a stiffer suspension would be more accurate in the blindfold test.
.. it would be a big diff if they did a blind driving test stick, only seeing the tachometer and hearing the engine and so forth …. But that’s a death trap
First, feeling the car shacking is exactly how you feel the speed. The faster you go, the more unstable it feels. Second, accuracy depends more on personal experience, because your senses are calibrated based of that. While more bumpiness can allow a better accuracy, previous experience is still th3 strongest factor.
Just one criticism of your testing (for future reference). By giving direct feedback, saying what the actual speed was, after each guess you guys were adding a correction factor to the test. i.e. when a subject knows their error the subject can adjust to account for their perceived error and adjust their guesses to factor it (e.g. "Hmm, I think we're doing 50 but I was off by 10 last time so i'll guess 60"). This also means there was likely an element of practice too meaning which ever car was tested first will inevitably have a larger error that the second vehicle. If doing a blind test like that, don't give feedback, just look at the data afterwards.
Dude I drive a 06 Yaris hatch with the 1L, 3 cylinder 😂 Just let it warm up and 2nd gear is potent af with 6.5k rev limit and 50mph top end and man it feels good, tho I personally have never gone to 50 in 2nd or hit the Rev limiter

Good to know about context altering our perception of speed. It reminded me of how, years ago, in World of Warcraft, I found flying mounts way more fun when flying low. Now it makes sense that when flying higher up at the same speed, it felt really slow because I had all the context of where I was coming from and going to. Flying close to the ground at the same speed felt way faster. Cool how it rings true even in a case like that.
Kinda depends, actually. If everyone drove sports cars, more woul get more accustomed to be lower to the road and at least be better able to *handle* more speed. These crossovers tend to have so much ride height that the worst arses in town drive Nissan Muranoes, no kidding. Basically they have no clue what's going on, just 'feel slow.'
@@OllamhDrab It also ties in to their personally acceptable levels of perceived safety. SUV's make people feel safe, and they tend to drive more recklessly until they're back in that band of perceived safety. Just like when you slow down because you feel unsafe. It's a lot more than just ride height.
Best video on youtube - I have an MX5 - your description makes perfect sense - I have always described the effect of a sports car as being the rate of information - I learnt a lot from your film - keep up the good work.
I think that the phenomena due to the lower riding height is due to the fact that you're closer to the ground so the 'movement' of the floor relative to you seems greater. Compare that to riding in a plane, you're super far from the area you're traveling across but you're traveling at high speeds. I think that concept applies to higher vehicles vs lower vehicles
The answer is simple. People having a fisheye lens/optics. It is distorted like a barrel roll effect. And you have a motion blur effect due to low data updates. It helps in speed detection. Since you have to watch in straight line while driving, you will have issues with blur due optics. While object is far from you AND you reaching it for long period - it will feels like driving slow If object is closer to a viewer, and changes fast - it will feels like a fast moving pace. Also, we have a phenomena of "constant speed", it is a brain "energy saving" issue. In a very short terms, brain don't want to process info every single second. The moment when everything around you stills the same - brain skips, no needs in updates. But, our brain is trained to detect changes in environment, and very fast processing it. Like: Drive 5-7mph, and then instantly go 20-30mph - brain will instantly say "wow, danger, stop!" But the same thing - for a high speeds. Drive 100mph for a 1 minute, it will be "stop!". Drive 5-10mins - it will be like 40mph. But the moment you will reduce speed from 100 to 40 - instantly feels like 5mph... But that's only while looking straight forward. Look to sides, and bang, you will know actual speed. Also try the same with looking straight down on a road from a passenger seat.
I did this in a shooter game, had the same movement speed for my character but I modified the height, from 6ft2 to 7ft2 the diff was insane in terms of speed
Very interesting. In my S5, I drive slower in dynamic than in comfort mode because I feel every bit of the road. More aggressive shifts and exhaust crackling remind me to let up early because I feel like I'm hauling ass. In comfort mode, the powerband isn't as aggressive, but the smoothness of it creeps up so quick. The road is plush and the shifts are seamless. Very easy to hit 60 in a 45 unintentionally.

@ElLocoGeronimo it got cancelled because a lot of people were sad that the car they preferred didn't win. I really feel bad for the dude because it was *his* opinion, but even tho he decided to cut the part where we says who is the overall winner, people still unnecessarily complained.
Poor Joey! All he did was being a fan boy xD I mean I didn’t like the show either but I didn’t like the whole concept and felt actually kinda bad for him.
Let's keep it a buck. The only reason his show was cancelled was because he felt Bugatti was a better company than Koenigsegg after that everything he did was heavily criticised for little to no reason. Honestly I like Bugatti more but for different reasons than he specified but I give him mad respect for being able to say there was a winner rather than just leaving it as a tie then saying u decide on the comment section however I feel no matter what so long as he said Bugatti was better there'd be a huge dislike ratio on the vid
When I was a vehicle tester, these were some of the most important factors we had to grade. Because regardless of how a vehicle performs, consumer satisfaction heavily relies on the *feel* of the drive. A total clunker could still be a fan favorite if it feels smooth or fast enough.
And this is why Subaru WRX STI are still so popular to this day, despite their engine having 280 HP. It just feels like you're going so fast while only at 40 mph, on the highway, you feel like you're driving a speed demon. But honestly it isn't going over the speed limit, just feel like a high-end luxury sport vehicle.

When I'm going very fast I tend to notice that all the active thinking gets deactivated and much happens from muscle memory etc, also when close calls or sliding out (on a motorcycle) happen everything is slowed down a lot to a point where I've had way more time to react precisely than when I rewatch it on the video, its an interesting phenomenon
But I think that this happens because there is no right focus in the videos, the whole image is in focus and we are the ones who see where we want to focus, when we review our own accidents. It's the same thing as when I record videos riding a motorcycle and sometimes I look at people's faces and in the video you can't tell that I'm looking at the person, etc.
I worked as a bus driver for a while. I got very good at knowing the speed I was doing, 30mph or 50mph were the two that were most common. After a while I didn't even need to look at the speedometer, I "knew" what speed I was going. That sticks with me years later now I'm not a bus driver I tend to default to those two speeds without even looking at a speedometer on whatever I'm driving. I guess it was a matter of practice (I had lots).
I’m still a transit bus driver and rarely look at the speedometer outside of school zones and when I feel like I’m speeding. Partly because I don’t need to since we start and stop so much that we often don’t even reach the speed limit, and partly because it’s difficult to see the speedometer because of its placement in most buses. The biggest things for me when driving my car is that I have to remind myself I don’t need to stop at railroad crossings, and to ignore looking at bus stops although I’ve kind of always done that because I’m a people watcher.
I had 2 VWs and in those, I knew pretty much exactly how fast I was going without looking into the dashboard. Then I bought a Citroen and even after 3 years, I have no idea how fast I'm going... The first time I took it while going to work, I caught myself going nearly 90km/h where the limit is 50km/h. I thought I was going 50... Luckily, there were no cops around... A couple of days ago, I took my GF's Ford Ka to car wash and - I knew exactly how fast I was going after a matter of minutes, without looking at dashboard! Later I came back into my Citroen, and once again - no clue about the speed... To make matters stranger, my uncle is a pro driver and he got only 2 speeding tickets in his life; both in Citroen... This video made it 0 clearer to me why this happens, but it simply is - in some cars, you feel speed differently...

@@lukasg4807 well if they break first there also is a speed difference. they also might have better brakes etc
Yeah that was bullsh-- I mean 'comedy'.)
The next thing: when a car in front of a close string of cars on the highway brakes a bit, the car behind it tends to brake a little harder to compensate for the cars being suddenly much closer (because of the already mentioned reaction speeds).

You can feel speed if there's no obstruction, or hear it based on wind sound, usually greater speed equals louder wind noise
that is the point of the test.
.. it would be a big diff if they did a blind driving test stick, only seeing the tachometer and hearing the engine and so forth ….

So if everyone drives a sports car we’re more likely to collectively drive slower? Interesting
While object is far from you AND you reaching it for long period - it will feels like driving slow
If object is closer to a viewer, and changes fast - it will feels like a fast moving pace.
Like:
Drive 5-7mph, and then instantly go 20-30mph - brain will instantly say "wow, danger, stop!"
But the same thing - for a high speeds.
Yup. This is why the Civic EF hatch is so popular; when you can see the ground 3 feet in front of your bumper, everything feels fast.
Yeah like I was going 130mph on a train a few weeks ago and it felt like not faster than 60
Very interesting.

When I was a vehicle tester, these were some of the most important factors we had to grade. Because regardless of how a vehicle performs, consumer satisfaction heavily relies on the *feel* of the drive. A total clunker could still be a fan favorite if it feels smooth or fast enough.

I went 32 on a bird / lyft scooter in San Diego. Almost ate shit
nah, but 60 is enough
I occasionally drive a yamaha chappy 1978 moped 1hp. At 20mph it feels like a car in 50mph
I never knew Jeremiah was into sneakers I peep those 11s 👀
Space jammin on B2B field testing days - Jerry
Fun fact: When you notice pedestrian very front of your car, any car will feel fast.
Lmao, very true!
Good observation 👍
true

"We don't want be bombarded with race car noises and vibration" Sorry waht
Well, Mercedes and Rolls Royce owners don't seem to like it
On 200 mph speed ofc
Yeah? Unless you live here in Manila, and have migraines from a day at work and tired from some of the plastic people, you want to go home with a smooth ride passing thru rush hour traffic with our moon-surfaced roads, muddy spills, years-delayed road construction and some factors like beggars knocking at your windows at every traffic intersection while their friends play on your spoilers and canards. Or even the anti-lowered driveways that were designed to humiliate all RWD cars just to park.
Like I saw a proper setup M3 with no tints running in our home avenue, EDSA, bouncing like hell and the poor passenger's hilarious to look at while travelling 40KPH (not MPH) along with other cars. Even those wide VOLTEX spoilers are dancing, no match in our perfectly paved roads.
Its ok you'll figure it out when you're not 16 anymore
Joey Rassool found his niche, presenting while driving. His voice was natural and pleasant to listen to while delivering information in this video. More Joey Rassool in cars please!
As a fellow Mechanical Engineer, I thoroughly enjoyed this episode and gladto see you guys are sort of going the myth busters testing route. Bring science to the people 🙌🏾
Newer Mazda 3s are really good for feeling fast when it's actually slow. The sport mode is so damn fun
fr my dad has a 2021 mazda 3 sport black edition and it feels fast af even though it only has i think around 160-170(?) hp
So that's the reason all of the people in pickups drive like idiots on the highway, they FEEL like they are going 60 when they're actually going 75. Isn't that right.
I get passed by lifted jeeps doing 90mph all the time. Like death wish much?
I am a victim of this the trucks with big a** tires mess with the speedometer mine is 10 mph off so from doing 70 actually doing 80 really confusing 😅
@@flexnlexus129 Put the right tires on that the vehicle is rated for and speedometer is calibrated for.
@@xm210c
That’s kinda a dumb answer considering they probably chose the larger tires. A better answer would be to explain the only reason that should be is the wrong size tires and to just keep the difference in mind. They also can be adjusted or replaced with other speed sensors depending on the vehicle.
People who want big tires want big tires. I think it’s dumb on a daily after a certain point. To be 10mph off, they’re probably pretty big.
Well 90 is 70 in Texas
Kinda reminds me of the scene from initial D during the battle with that black r32. I can't remember the exact quote but Takumi told his dad he needed glasses and so they went to get his eyes checked, only to find out that Takumi had perfect vision. Bunta lashed out at him but Takumi reasoned saying that when he drives everything felt slower and slower.
And that's when it hits him, that his son was actually getting faster and faster.
Please go watch the actual anime :')
That netflix version was hard to watch after the original.

I own an FRS on coil overs and wide summer tires. It is absolutely the slow feels fast car. Highway ramps and interchanges are glorious. Slow car fast is the way.
“putting an M badge on the back of it” that was savage bro 🤣
Aw joey you hit me in the feels bro. I think you're a fine on screen presenter, I just think vs. was a flawed concept. I can't wait to see your next project.

I do quite a lot of Simracing and it is so true and so fascinating to notice that the better you get to know the car and the track (and I mean hundrerds of laps and many hours in) everything seems to go slower, but you are actually going faster.

As an 86 enthusiast I can't deny this
@Warm Soft Kitty Because it feels like a proper driver's car. My father has a restored 1970 ford mustang mach 1 and I can tell you with 100% certainty that my car is faster than his in a straight line and in cornering. Sure there is a 40+ years difference but why would anybody buy the Mach 1? Nostalgia.
@Warm Soft Kitty No Mach 1 ever came with a v6.

At 60 my 4Runner feels like it’s entering the earth’s atmosphere, shaking and screaming including sometimes
Edit: My right front brake caliper fucked itself so it was literally jammed shut so the wheel would barely turn, that caused the shaking
55 in my wrangler is squirrely 70 feels like a death wish
I drive an old 94 ranger 4x4, i know the feeling. All original suspension, lol
you probably bought one with frame damage then.. because my dads 4runner cruises 95 stable as my rs7
Anytime i went like around that speed and even 30 mph on a uhaul v8 it felt like i was going really fast.
I drive a flatbed tow truck for work and 65 mph feels like I'm going to hurdle through the space time continum
I feel fast in my Buick Rendezvous because it feels like it could fall apart at any moment

Great video.
Perhaps you can put to rest one of the greatest misunderstandings in the automotive enthusiast world, that being that a car that accelerates quickly does NOT push you back into the seat, even in the slightest. Instead you are only accelerated in the forward direction and never move rearward at all.
Same with motorcycles
Ive driven 50-110cc scooters and feels like you are about to die at 30mph
While my yamaha mt09, driving below 60mph feels boring
And earplugs make a huge difference, 100 feels like a 60.
I hear cars with loud exhausts that sound like they are haulin' ass but then when I look at them, I realize they aren't going that fast at all. 🤷♂️
Like a 90's golf with a 3" exhaust...
Lmaoo me asf with my 5.9 durango exhuast cut off its loud as shit but slo😂
Every honda civic ever. Lol
@@yahirestrada9425 my 5.2 Ram also was loud af when I ran just longtube headers with extensions for a week. Fun, but terrible at the same time drone at 40-50mph cruising was HORRIBLE (But 60-75 was actually not all that bad, actually).
When I had it straightpiped for a week just because, it was loud, tho still quieter than I expected (after hearing other straightpiped 2nd gens), but it definitely sounded like ass, and that very much was expected. Got a high quality set-up now, and even with a stock cam, worn stock timing chain, and cylinder compression in the double digits on 5 cylinders, it still sounds mint af, tho it's not nearly as loud as it would be if at least the compression and timing chain were where they should be.

Some things I found. Low car, Stiff suspension, Short gears, all help make a car feel faster!
3:58 “You might remember me from my show “VS” and if you do, I’m sorry.” 💀
*_This also is a way to make your car feel faster_*
More low to the ground means, feels faster, also, if you remove sound protection, it will feel faster aswell. Drive a go cart, drive one normally, then drive one that’s been lifted up.

Haven't watched the video, but things that help.
Acceleration. You can be quick off the hop and still be a slow beater. For city driving, as long as that first and 2nd gear are responsive, you'll have yourself believing you're a real ricer.
Low to the ground.
Age of the vehichle/less suspension. It helps to feel the bumps if you wanna feel like you're going fast.
Me in my 05 forester: im so fast
Forester: 0-60 eventually
Donut Media... I'm an aspiring professional racing driver currently in Formula 4, and I just came across the biggest piece of information for me moving forward - and it definitely wasnt about what makes a slow car feel fast.
Thank you for this video guys... Wow.
Sheesh how young do you have to be to get into that? Hope you can make it to formula 1!
Love the new direction for this series. Much like in Money Pit, the more practical info (as opposed to theoretical) we receive, the better. Nice job!
If you are in a rolls royce or Bentley, going 70- 80 might feel similar to driving something with worse road, wind, and engine insulation while driving at around 30-40.
