- If youve ever wanted a 2door lancer evo, then look no further than the mitsubishi eclipse gsx
with a 4g63 turbo charged engine and an awd drive train its obvious why this car is still so damn popular among the jdm and tuner community!

Before you buy a crappy mic
because u are dumbass !!
@@plamenjekov4568 aww someone's feelings are hurt.
nope!! just pissed off idiots who throw shits just like that and never have arguments to support what they said !!
@@plamenjekov4568 bro, the mic is pretty crappy. Just hear it.
plamen jekov i lost my last 2 brain cells reading that. U think we were born out of somebody’s butthole?? 0.o
I would never call this a poor mans evo ever! This is a cult classic DSM! The GSX is an amazing car if you know whether to get a 6 bolt or 7 bolt motor...to knock this car in any way shape or form is just a major party flaw
Nick Sawyer which is the best? I plan to get one in a year or two
1 year about but this is built in Illinois btw
@@KingZD1 6 Bolt is better, 7 bolt suffers from crankwalk
6 bolt, crank girdle, forged internals, billet crank. 6262 turbo, FMIC, balancer delete, AMS V2.(stay away from DSMlink) magnus intake, HKS turbo timer. HKS 3” exhaust
eppademic instead of DSMLink what can I use?
To me the gsx looks better than any evo. Sorry !

Its wayyyyyyy better then Evo
And the fact that it’s tons cheaper with the same motor 😂
KFC drive thru mic is so annoying
Guess he never heard of Best Buy.
Gets the job done
I own 1996 eclipse for last 11 years no problems at all great car and still looks good l will never sell it !
leszek Wkd I have 1996 talon witch is the same thing...I will never sell it
Is it a gsx though
@@theacehavin7918 Well, if you knew DSM well. You would know they didn't make a GSX in 96. Only the GS-T, GS & RS.
@@SeemzLegit454 i don't know cars like that i only asked if it's a gsx cause the one being reviewed is a gsx
@@SeemzLegit454 what are you talking? u are dumb, i just did a search, the GSEX was made in 96 and 95 also! do u know DSM well?
Any 2.0l car over 400hp can have issues.
And you told everything, new driver + low budget + easy to modified + ebay = no money for maintenance = fail.
Thats why these cars has bad reputation.
Btw I've owned 3 4g63t dsms and it never let me down, i fkn love the 2g gsx
Exactly.
I had a 95 none turbo and a 2001 v6 . Loved both, crashed both. Not my fault
Did you just tell me that I should buy an Eclipse GSX and keep it stock? That’s like going to McDonalds for a nice, healthy salad.
Im 39 years old. In the 90s the eclipse was a hot ride.
You have to remember the car is going to be close to 20 years old. That means the parts are the same age.
If you get all brand new crate engine. Maybe forged crank, rods and pistons. Bigger turbo, beefed up transmission and suspension. Ported heads and intake. Bigger cam or cams. Then your car can handle as much hp as you want.
Same rule applies for all cars.
They are, but the drivetrains are not the real issue here so to speak because you can still get new and rebuilt engines and transmissions. The name problem is that you have a car that had typical Dodge rust, and a lot of people who literally bought them and drove them into the ground. So finding a clean example is next to impossible because you had the original owners that didn't care, and then you had a decades worth of kids hotrodding them and beating them to death until the next cool ''thing'' came out. I had a Talon TSI and although I loved the spirit of the car, it was an absolute shit bucket. Between small parts essentially being non-existent unless you buy it used, the hidden rust you don't know about until something breaks (my car was perfectly clean on the shell and for the year I owned it, there wasn't a single bubble anywhere...took it to get new tires put on and one of the lift posts went right through the passenger side rear quarter panel and completely tore out about a foot worth of rusted sheet metal). The cars are great if you can find a good clean one, but hell...for the asking money that people want, you could easily get other newer and more reliable cars (people want for a good stock example anywhere from 2k-6k) like Mustang GT's, Impreza WRX's, and many others.
Bob Sagget
For a person who loves Eclipses, especially a GSX,
6k is nothing though…
Bob Sagget i literally bought a 03 eclispe barely 100xxx miles. Lools New. Body perfect. 5 speed GT. I saved it from a kid who blew the clutch... Lol. So, i guess i got lucky especially since all i paid was 800$
I got mine for free since my mother owned it, and I just finished rebuilding it. I just uploaded a video of it.
I have a 345whp 97 GST that I drive daily and she runs perfect. You gotta stay ahead of your maintenance and you’ll rarely run into problems! That goes for any car.
Thanks for doing a review on the GSX!
Isn't the Lancer Ralliart the poor mans evo now?
just like modern rally cars will be after 20 years !!
I've owned one. 2.4 mivec makes it plenty fun
Lancer is the poor mans Evo. I have seen a lot here in Toronto area that were riced to look like an Evo. I want to throw up everytime I see one, especially with fake fender vents from ebay.
good tuned lancer is realy good sport car!! u talk aobut old lancers wich have not seen good maintenance !! so thinking ur way there could be bugatti, mazerati ,Bentley and any other expensive brand "poor mans" cars
@@plamenjekov4568 Bugatti, Maserati and Bentley! Poor mans car! What drugs are you taking? Tuning a base model Lancer... That's another strong drug. You going to spend money to tune it? People who have money will go buy an Evo right away instead of buying a lancer and tune it.
I have experienced the transfercase failure and it was easy to fix what was difficult was finding one with the correct splines.also proud owner of a 1g gsx with over 250k miles and still is driveable
I’m never going to sell my 1997 Eclipes,. NEVER
Hamza STX Badman i fuck with that man, I’m NEVER gonna sell my 99’ it’s my daily and project and yeah man I kiss my car goodnight
Yea it’s my dream car and I take care it pretty good as you can see on my profile pic , mines is the 97 , the car keeps value when the years pass , it’s an AWESOME project to have

Heck yeah bro, igot mine for free since my mother owned it, and I just finished rebuilding it. I just uploaded a video of it.
Next video: Before you buy a Ford Taurus SHO.
GST owner, the evo is nice and all so no shade but lets keep it real. The older model EVOs are ugly as hell compared to the legendary DSM 2g body style
Got my 96 GST for $1700 runs great and super quick for just bolt ons 😊
AyyItsOmar that’s dope. I just paid 1k for a 98 GS (I know :( ) super clean with only 98k on it. Now I want to sell this one and get a gsx.
Naw bro. . Maybe untill you see one person. . not the same engine as far as internals. . And turbo. . stock suspension and gears. . . The weight as well. . Love gsx. . not a poor man's Evo. . It's an amazing car but no evo is ugly.
What’s the difference gst Nd gsx
Edwin Aquino gsx all wheel drive
Do this before buying a car that’s literally impossible to find and if you do enjoy your trip across the country 😂😂
I do not agree this is poor man evo, I think this one of the classic, I love the look of it(97-99), one of the best looking car ever
I have a 1994 Plymouth laser. Honestly for a car this age, super fun to drive and super reliable! It’s currently pushing close to 240,000 miles. Still running healthy !
Lol as a owner of 2 dsms. I confirm they are lots of maintenance upkeep. But they are seriously a blast. I went from a 87 1jz Mk3 too a awd 4G63T and Im just seriously in love with the car it was a different feeling hitting boost.
I got my 99 GST when I was 15 (now 21) bought with 120k miles and now has 180k and I've never had any major issues with it only what any 20 year old car would have, just gotta keep that maintenance and it'll last you a long time
I respect the work to make this video. Too many are hating on your mic but it takes guts, time and dedication to put something on RUclips. I applaud you nigga.
Da hail. That first video with white eclipse is mine haha. Where’s my credit dawg smh. I was like da fak when I opened this video.
One of the biggest factors I found owning two of these is the shock tower rust and rust in general..
what kinda of broken ass dsm have you been driving?😂
Yo, where are all the Starions?
I still have my 99 eclipse and the only problem I've had were the brakes and control arms other then that the engine produces 300hp
I owned like 5 Talon/eclipse in the past and I love them.. If you take care of them they will take care u.. If you going to squeeze HP out of that engine just use common sense is a turbo car.. Upgrade to a better head gasket, install ARP head studs, and the most important thing keep that engine cool as much as you can that's vital for that engine.. After market cooling fans bigger aluminum radiator and you can easily daily drive on 500hp
So I’m looking at a 1991 tsi talon awd, it’s bone stock and the engine is super clean. I am thinking of getting it for a daily, would it be worth it?
See crank, see crank walk 😂😂
Had a 96 RS that I built and put a turbo on it. Pushing about 290hp. It was fun... Til it threw a rod right out of the block and I could see cylinder 1 lol. But I just bought a 98 and it's a gs and I'm gonna leave it stock, just worry about making it look good
“Keep you car stock” LMFAO yea right smh, do what ever y’all want 👍
Easy to work on! I just did the timing belt and water pump on my b5 A4 Quattro and it was insane! Took me 2 hours on my 96 4g63 and about the same on my 420a. 2 days on the audi! Of anyone wants to trade their DSM for a Quattro, HMU.
All the cons are due to owner negligence. And all can be avoided of you take care of your car.
John Kopp my mother was the original owner of mine. I personally tore apart all of the motor and all was in spec perfectly. I futilely built her to oem specs with upgraded parts. Now she’s on the path to 700hp!
Wow
You should keep making more videos of Before you buy!!!
Owner of 98 GST and 98 GSX and guess what I LOVE THEM.
R.i.p. to every 2g that gets purchased after kids watch this video...
Degenerate Garage omg exactly. When I heard power for cheap I cringed.
I loved this generation eclipse. Why did Mitsu. F that up and stop making them this good ?!!
I’m in the market for a clean GSX, not because it’s what you refer to as poor mans evo. I’m buying it for nostalgic reasons and I had a red 97 gsx with a built 6bolt swap, ran 11.5 on pump gas back in the 90s. Never leaked oil and coolant like you said. Sold it and now that I’m old and making great money, I’m starting to collect cars from my past. Getting a clean street GSX. Integra Type R. And if I can find a great deal, mkIV Supra.
What turbo were you running? What were your 60ft times?
I had a 1999 Mitsubishi Eclipse GSX. what an awesome car.
there rare as hell especially a clean red one. id love to get one by the end of the year tho
I can't believe crank walk wasn't brought up haha
Bro described every car from the 90s 😂
One thing I can say a car that sits is just as bad simply from gaskets rotting. The biggest weak point in these cars is the harmonic balancer since they are a three piece design. These cars are reliable if you make them that way. Get gauges from wide bands to voltage monitor everything. I would recommend ECMLink but they are up in the air right now. If anyone has build questions just ask me in my inbox I’m down to help.
I daily mine, and I’m finally fixing it up hahah I love my GS 😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅
I miss my 99 gsx. But as well kept as I had it, it broke more than all of my other cars combined.
I'd not describe it as a poor man's EVO - it's a very different type of vehicle
Less weight, less money. Win win.
Interesting, but I feel the end was way too abrupt. You started hitting some good points for people to learn about beforehand and I was expecting a lot more good info but you just ended it there. Still, it's better that people watch this than not know anything at all.
the strut towers are notorious to rust out eclipse /talon. Plus eclipse/talon/laser came before the Lancer Evolution so I can't be a poor man's Evo.
You might want to fact check the evo came out alot sooner with the 4g63.
Also dont say "but we didn't get the evo untill [INSERT DATE HERE]".
You wrong the first evo you could say was a Galant VR4 which is called Evo 0 and actually many Evo parts can be fitted onto VR4s that’s the “first evo”
This was 1989 or so and the 4G Motor predate everything above
Love my 1g talon tsi, but because I bought it from someone who did improper work I spent many days correcting it. I still have somethings to do yet, mostly finding someone to tune my ecmlink. I’m hoping once that gets done I should be around 430hp.
Where are you doing your research? Burnt valves? Burnt guides? Definitely not a known issue with the 4G63.
The #1 2G DSM issues should be shock tower rot or thrust bearing failure (aka crankwalk) The engine is solid and respond to upgrades nicely as long as they are maintained to accept the power. These cars are over 20 years old now and you can't just throw power at a car that hasn't been gone over with a fine tooth comb..Blame the kids...not the platform.
4G63addict I feel everyone should do preventative maintenance of if you’re a seasoned mechanic should tear the motor apart and make sure all is fine. I’ve seen guys buy these and try to throw power at them then call them junk. Simply because they didn’t understand that’s not how it works.
So are the "bads" associated with this mainly to those who tune their eclipse?
Would a '97 GSX be a good daily? Considering it's Mitsubishi, how reliable is it? I don't plan to modify it within the first 1 or two years of ownership. Just want an affordable, fun, and nonchalant car.
they're also prone to rust like you wouldnt believe
I want another one it was such a great cat if you take care of it and they cruise like a concord
There are so many differences other than the turbo. The compression is different, the head is different, the transmissions are different. The evo block doesn't even bolt up to a DSM transmission.
cddfvsadgadfb aw dddd
No USA evo came with an engine you can put in a DSM easily.
This video is just trying to get views. Mr. Random Reviews sounds like he's going off stuff he read online and hasn't actually owned one of these cars, evo or dsm. A perfect example is how he said the highly modified cars are high maintenance around the 3 minute mark. It's been the unmodified cars that I've seen the worst lack of maintenance and neglect on. Mine is highly modified and the maintenance on it is very little, it runs like a top every day and is faster than a lot of other cars on the road.... by a good margin.
I'm just sayin this video is a bunch of sensationalism meant to get some dumb kid on the internet to go, "wait whaaaaaaa..... i can have a poor man's evo." The early 90s called, they want their youtube video back.
I'm an avid dsm owner myself. I have a 91 Talon FWD, a 90 Eclipse GSX, an 89 Dodge Colt GT, a 00 Civic EX Turbo, an 01 Lexus IS300 Turbo. I've had my Talon for 13 years now. I'm fortunate to be in TX where we don't have rust cars. If anyone buys these cars thinking they're getting a cheap evo they're in for a horrible surprise. You better know how to work on cars and have deep pockets. You have to pay to play, I don't care what car chassis you're using. If you think you're getting one of these cars for cheap it's going to be a hoopty basket case.
The only issue I have with my 99 gst is that its a spyder. Cool that its a convertible but man, the body twisting over bumps...but I still love mine
Don’t forget to mention the 1 Generation is almost the same and a lot cheaper and somehow reliable and no prompting crankwalk if you get the 6 bolt motor. My 2 cents.
Let me get some credit yo you
Used a lot of my clips 🤦🏻♂️
For real info on the eclipse watch everything you need to know about the eclipse by donut media.
The eclipse gsx was always my dream car
An EVO is also considered poor now that they are used. Anyone can pick one up for 20K. It’s not a Supra, Skyline, RCF, GSF, ZO8, etc where you are paying 80 grand+ for one. Most of us guys now in our late 30s are picking them up for nostalgic reasons. My wife thinks it’s ugly, but she gave me a green light to find/build my first love, a clean red red 97-99 gsx with a 6bolt swap and big turbo. While her daily is an 80K Soccer mom SUV.
I dunno I feel like people focus on maximizing power and neglecting supporting mods. Issa good car
Regret selling mine. Sold it to someone in MD back in 2013. Black gsx full bolt on 16g..:(
My friend had a 98 gsx and it was awesome. I wish he would've sold it to me.
Thanks
Just a small tidbit the 1g has the same suspension setup and engine..lol. good video
“Naturally aspirated”
Today is 2022 and You can’t find one under $10k. Some are even at $30k, with 110k miles on it.
Good luck finding this car
What year and version is the red one in this video.
Very Good
proud owner of a 73k miles white 97 gsx
It actually has the engine, transition and 4wd system of an Evo III
Are these engines bulletproof? I’m tryna get one it’s at 90,000 miles
Dude. Please youtube "how to make any mic sound good with audacity" (audacity is free) That saidGood video editing.
You might not be real acquainted with the 4g63, but I am. The DSM 4g63 is MUCH different than the EVO 4g63. For starters the timing components are on the opposite side of the engine. The head oil passages are shit in the DSM version and the cooling setup is different and runs cooler on the evo.
The 7bolt in the DSM is known for random issues with crank walk due to poor bearing design and or casting issues in some early blocks. The dsm if left mostly stock will run for a long time, but they don't make enough power.
The evo uses a twin scroll turbo setup and spools quicker, vs the dsm single. The 2g has the small t25 turbo from factory and doesn't flow enough.
Warning for anyone looking to buy one and boost it more than stock you have to run ARP head studs on anything above 13psi because the factory head studs stretch and are garbage.
You touched on everything but the one con that the 1992 1/2 -1999 7 bolt 4g63t Mitsubishi eclipse gst or gsx or eagle tallon tsi they are notorious for getting crank walk due to poorly designed thrust bearing at higher hp levels, if you want one with no problems buy a 91 or a 92 6 bolt 4g63t.
I kind of want to buy one as a project car, and keep my 4G as my daily lol. And if I had the money, buy a Mitsubishi Zero XD
Where did you bought that eclipse spoiler?
You forgot to mention you might blow the welds off the intake, are the piston rings you might fry🙆♂️
That was the 420a
i had one before and man dont get me wrong it looks nice... but holy smokes it had issues after issues so glade i got rid of it...
Rather have a GSX than an EVO!
prefer the 1g but these are still great
What about the spyder? I mean idk how to drive standard yet but he test drove me in it and it ran pretty fuckin good for a 98 that looked like shit😂😂
Do a “before you buy a muscle car”
The car is 20 years old. You will have some problems. It's a turbo car... They are notorious for many of these issues, mentioned in this video, because they're a turbo vehicle. My only problem was finding a mechanic that was good enough to deal with the hydraulic clutch. I still drive mine every day.
i would like to see a toyota celica in the next video, im planning to buy one really soon
Thank you subscribed
One of Spilner's iconic GSX !!
A poor mans microphone
But from where i can buy eclipse 1999
Imy hommie was give me a good deal on his eagle talon awd and we went for a test drive and the transmission blew in second gear at 3,500 rpm then he said u broke it u buy it, it was so damn clean but had back tags fuel cell was for e85 only
Where should i look to buy one?
"you just got your license" these are not for beginners or teenagers, im 18, my 97 GST is my 3rd car in the last year, this is by far the most problematic, picky, and sketchy. but I love it WAY too much to part with it lol
You literally forgot crankwalk with the 4G63. It had been a problem since the motor was introduced, hell it even continued onto the Evo 10 and that had the new 4B11T
WillDagamerkid053 crankwalk only occurred on 95-97 eclipses, they went to a 3 piece main crank bearing for those years which caused the failure, it only is relevant for the 2g eclipse as well as same year evos, the problem in later evos is failing to replace the bolt at the top of the transmission, it causes the motor to rattle itself apart, that exact thing happened to Jafromobile’s GSX here on youtube
It continued on the 4b 11 , you do realize it's a totally different engine, but it kept the Crankwalk, do you realize how stupid you sound , seriously get a clue
Much better looking than the evo too! Not sure why all the kids love that 4 door grocery getter. The interior is about as bland as you can get.
Andrew McIntosh wannabe Supra
I drive an Evo X, and I wouldn't trade it for the world. It handles better than any car I've ever driven, and I've got more than enough power when I want it. That Rockford Fosgate sound system is pretty nice, too. I'd love to have a GSX as well, though!
You ever drivin an evo?
@@ohslothz4079 Yep I have driven them. They are fun cars but they are ugly imo. Sports cars should have 2 doors, not 4. It looks like a suped up family sedan.
@@andrewmcintosh9832 you gotta read up on your history man. Look up Evo/everything you need to know. Maybe it'll give you a different view of why its 4 doors.
I got a 1991 eagle talon that is build and running 650whp. Awd with a stock lsd.
You have to find the smaller percentage of guys who know how to do it right (idk about these guys now, but) I've seen a couple videos of guys maintaining heavily modified S.t.i's and Dodge Srt-4......yes, those aren't Eclipse's, but still higher to maintain.
I love this CAR
