  • The Mitsubishi Eclipse was a special car for enthusiasts in the USA since we didn't get the Lancer Evolution in the 90's. It created a cult following with the potent 4G63T leading the way and for this platform and then....it went away. But what's the history behind this model and why did it become discontinued?

    All these videos about mitsubishi's history are making me sad that they don't do the performance version of much anymore. 3000gt vr4, eclipse gsx, and lancer evolution were the perfect awd trio from the 90's.

      RIP Mitsubishi. They will be out of the USA within 5-10 years. They don't make any decent cars anymore, unless you want the cheapest car on the market with the Mirage. Such a shame.

      TyroPuffin actually we have a free will but its within a pre destination.God knows what we will do but we have a choice in our lives that affect the future but it really doesn't because its already chosen. Only though Jesus christ we have eternal life and by him, making the choice to accept him will affect the future for us. But either way God knows if we accept him or not, that is why some people don't accept the gospel because they weren't chosen too considering there choice they would make in there life that would change there future

      What does Mitsubishi want with all the SUVs?! Did the sports cars have poor sales? I hope they don't go bankrupt. I just want a car the 1991 - 1995 Lancer chassis anyway.

    The Eclipse was THE cool japanese sports car while I was in high school, which was during the 2nd gen model years, the 3rd gen just came out when I graduated. My older friend had a 98 White Eclipse FWD turbo. It was luxurious with leather seats and it was freaking fast!
    Lancer EVOS were mythical illegal cars we could not have, but we did enjoy the 3000GT and I remember a girls Eagle Talon she had, 1st gen, awesome

      MidnightClubsSR It would be nice, but they don't have the funding after filing for bankruptcy and they're focusing more on crossover/suv type cars. I think they're even late on that, but we'll have to wait and see.

    People like to shit on the 4G a lot, but fail to realize that with the 6G75 engine, it was by far the most powerful Eclipse to have ever left the factory. The 3.8 also has the only proper six speed manual and happens to respond very well to bolt-ons and tuning (at least for an NA). With only intake, full exhaust and a 94 octane tune, my V6 is making a solid ~60hp over stock. Definitely an underrated car with an underrated motor

      Your car is cool and does make really excellent torque. But its just not in the same spirit as the 1g and 2gs. It was 12x the car of the 3g for sure though

    • @manfromnantucket9544
      @manfromnantucket9544 7 лет назад +5

      Dagan Williams Sure, it didn't have the 90s import cool or available AWD that the older generations enjoyed, but viewed soley on a performance front, it was the best (at least stock). Unfortunately, it did get soft and heavy in the later years, but the dollar to horsepower ratio was always quite strong. For less than 10k I bought and built a 280whp NA car. Not terrible.

    Well done history of the Eclipse. I think a lot of us eclipse fans are definitely disappointed in the direction Mitsubishi has taken in the last seven years. I wonder if mitsubishi really wants to make money or is this a tax write off because if they were interested in making money they would build cars that people would want.

    • @GTContent
      @GTContent  7 лет назад +3

      Thanks!
      Yes, Mitsubishi seems to be in a confused state and you can thank management for that. They've made a lot of past decisions for the US market and now they're focusing on crossovers/SUV's. We'll see if Mitsubishi motors makes a comeback.

  • @MechRider89
    @MechRider89 7 лет назад +5

    Mitsubishi and Chrysler were at odd's by 95 as Mitsubishi wanted to open dealerships in north america to sell they're own cars, Chrysler didn't like that so the partnership (DSM) was ended in late 1995 and mitsubishi built cars like the Talon, and Stealth by order only from there on out for chrysler. In Canada we also got the Galant VR4's rebadged as Eagle 2000GTX's (very very rare here in Canada)

    I got a 2007 Mitsibishi eclipse and I love it I have rebuilt the engine and put and bored the engine out and replaced everything high performance even has a 200 amp Altanator specially built locally and have a super mechanic that help me even put oversized valves in it after the head was reworked and you won’t believe the horsepower I’m about to tell you it had before I rebuilt it 162 horsepower yes laugh it’s a 2.4L but I guarantee I can way outrun any modified 6 cylinder and some V8’s yes don’t laugh it has been greatly appreciated and proven and I am a GOD FEARING MAN and would not lie to you which I really don’t care if you believe me I know what my Eclipse will do and I’ve pissed a lot of people off over them loosing to my car which everyone calls the BEAST and I actually do not know how much horsepower my car has now but I have a feeling that it’s a rocket engine now when i start it up it’s a major adrenaline rush to drive and I am so proud of my time and money and effort I have put into it it’s been worth it it’s my BEAST of a modified Mitsibishi product and I am a very happy proud owner of it......

    my 07 eclipse is the best car ive owned. i love the style personally, but it is by far the most reliable car ive ever driven. ive put 52k miles on it since i bought it used and all its ever needed was a new timing belt. i will get another newer eclipse for my next car, except with a convertible top.

    Hi thank you for this very informative video hystory of the Mitsubishi Eclipse one of my favorite cars. I had two models the 1993 GS and the 2000 GT. I trully miss these cool cars. Now if I have the opportunity to own a sport car again I would go for the Camaro SS or the Corvette.

    Wow its almost as if the new people working at Mitsubishi have some sort of vendetta against the Eclipse and since the 90's have only been trying to ruin its memory. Its so sad how cars like Mustang and Camaro get new updates that celebrate the legacy and design of the originals and such beautiful cars like the Eclipse get shit on by their very own manufacturer!

    Overall a good video and rundown on the history of the Eclipse, but with a few oversights.
    The Eclipse has always shared suspension and driveline design with the then current generation Galant chassis for the year. 1G=6G Galant, 2G=7G Galant and so on. The 1G Eclipse GSX used the identical setup from the Mitsubishi Galant VR-4, minus the 4 Wheel Steering and slightly longer wheelbase.
    Chrysler used the chassis from the Eclipse/Galant for some of their cars, Dodge Avenger, Dodge Stratus Coupe and so on. Not the other way around.
    Chrysler's contribution to the 1st Gen was mostly in the interior design, with the engine and driveline chores going to Mitsubishi.
    For the 2nd Gen, Chrysler "contributed" the 420A engine for use in NA market Non Turbo cars.
    Mitsubishi has aserious image problem on their hands that needs to be addressed. A revamped Eclipse sports coupe, not a bastardized "crossover" would bring people back into the delaerships. Make it sporty, fun and affordable. Either a turbocharged FWD/AWD or a RWD coupe.

      BluFalcon BluFalcon Thanks for the info. I understand I'll miss/leave things out as it may fall out of the scope of these history videos. I'm glad there are enthusiasts like yourself that can come in and chime on things.
      As far as Mitsubishi goes, they're in their situatiin at the moment and involved with other markets, so the car one seems not important at the moment. We'll all just keep our fingers crossed if they'll return to their former glory.

    Man, Mitsubishi really is committing suicide for themselves. Why would they continue the Eclipse legacy with an SUV?! That was a huge mistake. Japanese sporty cars are coming back to life, now why would they not try to take that approach and make a new Eclipse? Toyota now has the 86 and a soon-to-be Supra, and they are hoping to bring back the MR2. The Scion tC (now a Toyota, R.I.P. Scion- merged together) could also be considered somewhat sporty. Nissan has the 370Z and the GT-R R35. Honda has the new Civic Type R. But Mitsubishi has nothing to try and keep up. Making another SUV may help because of the SUV craze, but I think a sporty coupe would be a better option to try and get attention to the enthusiasts. I think the Eclipse Cross is going to be Mitsubishi's Pontiac Aztek- kills the company in one shot, since Mitsubishi is already suffering. It's a hit or miss. I hope the Eclipse Cross sells well so Mitsubishi can stay in business. Well, we just have to hope. Nice video! :)

      Ok I'm now replying to myself from 2 years ago. I didn't know what I was talking about two years ago as far as sales go. At least right now, Mitsubishi's best bet is to keep making and selling SUV's. As far as the market goes, nobody really cares for small sporty coupes anymore and Mitsubishi making a 5G Eclipse would be a waste of their time and money, because nobody would buy it whether it was AWD or not. For now, they're growing as a brand with SUV's, so if they make money from their crossovers and that gives them a bigger brand image and more money to put forward to a sports coupe, then that's good enough. All brands hit good and bad points, and Mitsubishi's growing out of their worst (2013-ish when they barely sold at all.)

    • @oriongear2499
      @oriongear2499 4 года назад +4

      RacerRyan 86 Not lying. I hope they bring back the 3000GT at some point. Mitsubishi can make crossover SUVs if it makes them tons of money, but I would want them to put some of that money towards making an enthusiast-targeted sports car.

      Replying to myself from 3 years ago, I now have a 4th gen Eclipse GT with a 6 speed manual and I love it! It's such a fun and underrated car. If people didn't often compare it to the 2G GSX, it would be reckoned as an outstanding car for the price you can buy them used for.

    I am old enough to remember when these first got really hot here in the States just as the hey day of the Fox body 5.0 Mustang was starting to wane. I had the opportunity to drive a five speed turbo eclipse(it had the fixed lights cannot remember what year it was)I do not remember if it was just FWD or AWD I just remember how impressed by the car I was. It was white with a beige leather interior with an outstanding dash.

    FROM 1995-2000, THE ECLIPSE SHARED ITS PLATFORM WITH THE DODGE AVENGER COUPE AND CHRYSLER SEBRING COUPE. AFTER AVENGER WAS DISCONTINUED. IN 2001 THEY INTRODUCED THE DODGE STRATUS COUPE AND A NEW SEBRING UNITIL 2005 WHEN THEY WERE DISCONTINUED. 2006 WAS the FIRST YEAR IT STOOD COMPLETELY ALONE.

      Vape Nation Arabia I uses to own a Z32 TT. Best advice for you is to get a 1991 or later. Check for brittle plastics, hoses and gaskets in the engine bay as they will cause leaks. Check the foam rear wing as it tends to rust and break apart between the trunk. Also check T-tops for potential leaks. They are a headache to do engine work, so be prepared.

    The eclipse cross is a slap in the face of all former eclipse owners, and I don't understand what he is talking about when he talks about the 4g engine, I went from an infiniti g35 to a 06 eclipse gt. Sure the inifini was definitely faster off the line, but the eclipse is no slouch and once you hit 40 the thing is amazing and easily beat my infiniti. Also it has been super reliable, 155k miles and not a single engine or transmission issue.
