  • Hey guys,
    The Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution has been discontinued, but it's past was very interesting. The rally inspired Lancer Evolution evolved through many obstacles and gained a large following while doing it. It's rally bred history has provided us with a car that's also very capable on the street. Even though it is gone now, it is not forgotten. Maybe we'll get another form of the "Evolution" in future Mitsubishi models. Hope you enjoy watching the history of the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution!

    It is good to talk about the Mitsubishi Galant VR4 while you're talking about the Lancer Evos. You know VR4 is the predecessor of Lancer Evos and has a very good history in rally!

    Nice Movie. Problem is that they dont make the EVO's anymore. Subaru is now in the lead and still making the Impreza STI. I wish Mitsubushi still continues making the EVO lineup models.

      Thanks! Yes, it's unfortunate that it's been discontinued, but let's not forget that we can still get them in the used market. As far as AWD competition goes, like you mentioned, we still have the STI, but there is also the Golf R and Focus RS.

    • @TheRealProski87
      @TheRealProski87 7 лет назад +27

      GT Content I dislike the new STi's look, the Golf R doesn't have any race history, and the Focus RS is literally like 3,800 lbs or something crazy. The Evo for me was the perfect balance of looks, weight, race history, and tech. It's upsetting that they're getting rid of all that to make lame SUV's that nobody wants.

      Yes, it'll be a sad future without the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution.

      GT Content I hope they at least keep the Subaru alive. The 22B and most of the mid 2000's WRX's are sweet cars. Hopefully the future will contain more cars like the Lancer, Golf R, and WRX

    • @GTContent
      @GTContent  7 лет назад +1

      TheProski87 Yes, the Subaru will be kept alive. The Lancer Evolution didn't evolve itself enough to compete in this class. There may be more cars in the future like them.

    Slight corrections on a couple of things. You mentioned that the Lancer Evolution 5 for rally competition was based on "the new World Rally Car Class rules". I dont know if you got a little tongue tied there, or what? But the EVO-V was still a Group-A based chassis, as everyone else switched to the "WRcar", at David Richards behest (THAT David Richards, former boss of SWRT, and then WRC broadcast rights holder, who wanted more manufactures for a greater TV spectacle, so he created the WRC Kit Car spec to avoid homologation requirements, there was also some benefit to Subaru adopting the spec, but thats another story for another time).
    The Lancer EVO-VI was also a pure Group-A car. But it was technically not the last production based lancer to be raced.
    In the year 2000, the WRcar rules were changed again, and updated to allow for wider use of composites, and improved weight management, and suspension geometries. The majority of these changes being specifically to make the EVO obsolete. Because the other manufacturer teams were very upset that their million dollar kit cars were being beaten consistently by a road based Group-A car. And lets not forget what else happened in 1999, to add even more salt to their wounds, when a FWD Citroen Xsara F2 Kit Car won Rally Catalunya and the Toure de Course outright. Which sent WRcar teams like Toyota and Ford through the roof with rage about being beaten by a sub-class car. So the year 2000 saw a massive overhaul in the allowances for the cars. And from that, it became obvious that the pace of the EVO-VI was simply not up to par with the new WRcar rules.
    It was at this point that Mitsubishi, realizing that the Group-A car was well and truly non-competitive with the new WRcar rules, petitioned to run a hybrid car in 2001. One that was still based on the Group-A platform, but allowed for WRcar exemptions for composite materials use, and some suspension geometry allowances. This was entered as the "Lancer Evolution 6.5" officially with the FIA, and did wear the same front end aerodynamic treatments as the Tommi Makinen Edition Lancer road car had. This special hybrid Group-A car was allowed by way of a petition signed by the other manufacturers allowing it to run, with the understanding that the car would not run the full season.
    The car immediately won the opening round, podiumed in 5 of the first 8 races, and scored two more victories in that same time. And when it didnt podium, it finished 4th, with Tommi's teammate Freddy Loix scoring in the top 5 regularly, and no lower than 6th. Needless to say, the agreement with the teams allowance to let the car compete, was running thin. And after the Safari Rally the FIA told Mitsubishi they needed to hurry up with their WRcar program, or face penalties. So they quickly launched that car, and it immediately proved to be an abysmal failure.
    As a point of correction, and a common misunderstanding, this car was NOT built off of the Evolution VII platform, it only shared a minor resemblance in the front end treatment, and rear wing, and the base engine design. The actual car they chose to build off of was the base FWD Lancer Cedia. And they built a true ground up AWD converted WRcar (just like the Focus or 206 WRC cars). It was likely this decision that ultimately proved to spell the end of an era for Mitsubishi and RalliArt. The car consistently placed last among the WRcar field, and lead to the eventual shift of Tommi from Mitsubishi to long time rival Subaru.
    Of course they eventually made a proper WRC car in the new, almost clean slate design, Lancer WRC04. But by then it was too little too late. And sadly, the design of the car was still heavily influenced by Tommi Makinen's driving style preferences, and of course he had long since moved on, so the full potential of the car was never really put on full display, and that spelled the end of Mitsubishi in the WRC.
    Anyway, great video series. Love the format. Hope you get more attention, and more subs.

    I tested version V and VI in sim GT2 , and if it was suppose to have a chance against impreza, it had to be version RS , because GSR is just heavy, but has amazing driving. RS is a great rocket car, its a unique car. Everything on this car has a racing potential :D Its one of the few family cars,that can do racing. But it is legend in racing. Powerfull engine , balanced suspensions , easy drive and fast racing handling. Imprezas do not have strong engine like this. Even with the same power there is only few imprezas that are faster in racing , it is RA VI, also 22B I think. This is racing icon, one of the few, I need it to be alive :D Its so great I can dream about it ! I dont know what I want more , lanc or impreza, I think currently impreza

    Wish the Evo V was introduced in the US. Fell in love with it when featured in the movie "Legend of Speed." Loved the video. Sad to see Mitsu drop the Evo, but better to go out on top (3000GT) as opposed to becoming bloated and neutered (Eclipse).

    Evo IX the GOAT Evo

  • @Jun4patriots
    @Jun4patriots 7 лет назад +8

    It's unfortunate Mitsubishi ended the Evo and pretty much the entire brand. When you see a Mitsubishi car lot, you wonder what is there to look at? Since the evo is gone? Really sad when the final edition was done half ass and completely just put the badge "Final Edition" for the hell of it. If Mitsubishi wanted to improve its sales of the Evo, they only needed to make small changes to it. A nicer interior perhaps, new electronics and a great improvement would have been changing the gear box to a six speed. But of course, they would just rather end it entirely. Damn.

    • @GTContent
      @GTContent  7 лет назад +3

      +Jun4patriots Yeah, it's unfortunate. You can only blame management for their horrible direction.

    • @Jun4patriots
      @Jun4patriots 7 лет назад +1

      I can only hope by some miracle in a few years Mitsubishi makes a surprising resurrection from the dead and the Evo is revive and upgraded to a much better and badder version from new management and if it does come back, please please do not make it an automatic trans. Keep the stick shift alive.

      Jun4patriots the funnier thing is that the final edition cost 42k with no RECAROS!!!!! That's not an evo 🤦🏽‍♂️

    • @Jun4patriots
      @Jun4patriots 7 лет назад

      Yeah, it was the shitty final edition and a disgrace to the brand. Mitsubishi gave up in the car industry, all their cars today are just plain shit.

      I hate that they discontinued the evo. but I think mitsubishi did it at a perfect time. with them out running subaru and losing competition. after they released the evo x and it being the worst evo generation, it was in their best interest to discontinue the evo before they destroyed it glorious name. no matter the fact that subaru is still making the sti, evo's will always be more desirable due to their success and being overall a better car than the sti. i beleive the sti will die of soon also being that the sti is going down hill. heres to the evo being one of the best 4 cly awd sports sedans of all time.
