- Hey guys,
The Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution has been discontinued, but it's past was very interesting. The rally inspired Lancer Evolution evolved through many obstacles and gained a large following while doing it. It's rally bred history has provided us with a car that's also very capable on the street. Even though it is gone now, it is not forgotten. Maybe we'll get another form of the "Evolution" in future Mitsubishi models. Hope you enjoy watching the history of the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution!

It is good to talk about the Mitsubishi Galant VR4 while you're talking about the Lancer Evos. You know VR4 is the predecessor of Lancer Evos and has a very good history in rally!
Nice Movie. Problem is that they dont make the EVO's anymore. Subaru is now in the lead and still making the Impreza STI. I wish Mitsubushi still continues making the EVO lineup models.
Thanks! Yes, it's unfortunate that it's been discontinued, but let's not forget that we can still get them in the used market. As far as AWD competition goes, like you mentioned, we still have the STI, but there is also the Golf R and Focus RS.
GT Content I dislike the new STi's look, the Golf R doesn't have any race history, and the Focus RS is literally like 3,800 lbs or something crazy. The Evo for me was the perfect balance of looks, weight, race history, and tech. It's upsetting that they're getting rid of all that to make lame SUV's that nobody wants.
Yes, it'll be a sad future without the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution.
GT Content I hope they at least keep the Subaru alive. The 22B and most of the mid 2000's WRX's are sweet cars. Hopefully the future will contain more cars like the Lancer, Golf R, and WRX
TheProski87 Yes, the Subaru will be kept alive. The Lancer Evolution didn't evolve itself enough to compete in this class. There may be more cars in the future like them.
Forever love to the whole Evolution platform
I’ve owned and Evo III and an Evo X of course I cannot keep it stock and I have to add more power and I loved them both until I finally got my R35 DBA. These are really an amazing machines! Thank you love the history lesson
Really well documented history on the Evo, and well executed. Never owned an Evo but wish I had.
Thanks!
He protec
He attac
But most importantly he won't be back😭😭😭😭😭
RIP my fav car😭
Hey, the Evo III (3) was featured in Jackie Chan's Thunderbolt!
Thanks, good video. i was just about to seek an Evo history vid when yours came up!
6.5’s are the best evo and always will be.
Yes!!
Evo 2 rs is the strongest
Hell na Evo Viii
If anything I'd go evo o then 2 then 8
Allways has been
Mitsubishi 💪
Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution I - III❤❤❤
Great video Gary. Thanks for sharing. I love your channel. Keep it up. Have you done a Mazdaspeed video? That might be interesting.
Sarm 1084 Thanks! Not a bad idea. I'll put it in the backlog 😁.
Thanks for the video Gary. I am now evo educated.
This video finally answers my question why mitsubushi lancer evo did not really came from the linage of 1989 mitsubishi lancer.
Evo V is still my favorite.. VII is 2nd.. 😉
Evo III my dream car
Great vid, subscribed 😎
hope they make a mirage / attrage evolution. no joke that city hatch is sweet
+textmachine09 ikr
Evo 3 my favorite
great history lesson
I LOVE LANCER EVOS
I don't get how you totally skipped Jackie Chan driving an EVOIII in his racing movie "Thunderbolt"
But before his jump over to Mistubishi, he was driving a little high tech futuristic Suby in "Cannonball Run" 😄
Good job sir you explain very well
I call them 4-4-4s. 4 cylinder,4 door, powers all 4 wheels
What about all the UK fq models! The monster that was the evolution 8 fq400!
+Jagdeep Johal As I mentioned to other commenters. I'm not going to touch on every special model since it takes away from the focus of this video...history. It was a special model(s) specific to Europe and I aknowledge that.
well presented. very useful. thanks
Slight corrections on a couple of things. You mentioned that the Lancer Evolution 5 for rally competition was based on "the new World Rally Car Class rules". I dont know if you got a little tongue tied there, or what? But the EVO-V was still a Group-A based chassis, as everyone else switched to the "WRcar", at David Richards behest (THAT David Richards, former boss of SWRT, and then WRC broadcast rights holder, who wanted more manufactures for a greater TV spectacle, so he created the WRC Kit Car spec to avoid homologation requirements, there was also some benefit to Subaru adopting the spec, but thats another story for another time).
The Lancer EVO-VI was also a pure Group-A car. But it was technically not the last production based lancer to be raced.
In the year 2000, the WRcar rules were changed again, and updated to allow for wider use of composites, and improved weight management, and suspension geometries. The majority of these changes being specifically to make the EVO obsolete. Because the other manufacturer teams were very upset that their million dollar kit cars were being beaten consistently by a road based Group-A car. And lets not forget what else happened in 1999, to add even more salt to their wounds, when a FWD Citroen Xsara F2 Kit Car won Rally Catalunya and the Toure de Course outright. Which sent WRcar teams like Toyota and Ford through the roof with rage about being beaten by a sub-class car. So the year 2000 saw a massive overhaul in the allowances for the cars. And from that, it became obvious that the pace of the EVO-VI was simply not up to par with the new WRcar rules.
It was at this point that Mitsubishi, realizing that the Group-A car was well and truly non-competitive with the new WRcar rules, petitioned to run a hybrid car in 2001. One that was still based on the Group-A platform, but allowed for WRcar exemptions for composite materials use, and some suspension geometry allowances. This was entered as the "Lancer Evolution 6.5" officially with the FIA, and did wear the same front end aerodynamic treatments as the Tommi Makinen Edition Lancer road car had. This special hybrid Group-A car was allowed by way of a petition signed by the other manufacturers allowing it to run, with the understanding that the car would not run the full season.
The car immediately won the opening round, podiumed in 5 of the first 8 races, and scored two more victories in that same time. And when it didnt podium, it finished 4th, with Tommi's teammate Freddy Loix scoring in the top 5 regularly, and no lower than 6th. Needless to say, the agreement with the teams allowance to let the car compete, was running thin. And after the Safari Rally the FIA told Mitsubishi they needed to hurry up with their WRcar program, or face penalties. So they quickly launched that car, and it immediately proved to be an abysmal failure.
As a point of correction, and a common misunderstanding, this car was NOT built off of the Evolution VII platform, it only shared a minor resemblance in the front end treatment, and rear wing, and the base engine design. The actual car they chose to build off of was the base FWD Lancer Cedia. And they built a true ground up AWD converted WRcar (just like the Focus or 206 WRC cars). It was likely this decision that ultimately proved to spell the end of an era for Mitsubishi and RalliArt. The car consistently placed last among the WRcar field, and lead to the eventual shift of Tommi from Mitsubishi to long time rival Subaru.
Of course they eventually made a proper WRC car in the new, almost clean slate design, Lancer WRC04. But by then it was too little too late. And sadly, the design of the car was still heavily influenced by Tommi Makinen's driving style preferences, and of course he had long since moved on, so the full potential of the car was never really put on full display, and that spelled the end of Mitsubishi in the WRC.
Anyway, great video series. Love the format. Hope you get more attention, and more subs.
I might be wrong but the engendering team behind the evo dismantled which ended the production because of diff directions to take the evo
You're not wrong.
evo 7,8 and 9 are the best
三菱ユーザーですが✨
ランサーはかっこいい車🚙でしたが不景気があったから
撤退しましたね😅
keep it going
@GT Content where are the FQ variations?
I'm aware of them, but being that they were only available in the UK and weren't as popularized as the Tommi Makinen, I decided not to (We're mostly arguing over horsepower increases) . It'd be quite the challenge to list each various special trim for any of these car history videos since I plan to cover a lot of them.
I really love evo 3
sad to see mitsubishi going down hill and just being a bargain brand (they are doing that quite well though) hopefully they roar back in with new EVO and some rally competition
Proud owner of a lancer
*saving money for EVO IV*
Im still wondering if they would consider making an EVO model for their Grand Lancer which is currently being sold at china
+Burai Navarro Not sure since there may not be demand in that market.
Still boosting in my evo o vr4 I call it koro which means grandad in new zealand Maori
EVO 7 THE BEST
Asphalt 9 lancer evolution 10 uses final edition version
I need evo 7 where get help iam in love evo 7
mitsubishi : ''Hmm now this series is done how about we make another last last lancer?? Like a crossover (; '' *Continues on to make the lancer an Big Ass SUV*
Очень жаль что закрыли производство Evo IX.
Очень много людей желают Evo IX
Guys there is a mitsubishi lancer X FQ480
Final edition
2L engine with 480 hp !!!!
I'm aware. It's a special model offered in Europe. Not much of a transition piece for this video, but should have been noted.
No, it is 440 bhp not 480. Basically old stock X 300's tweaked and with a few extras thrown on.
Not sure if he is mad or his mouth is too sour haha.. great vid though
I tested version V and VI in sim GT2 , and if it was suppose to have a chance against impreza, it had to be version RS , because GSR is just heavy, but has amazing driving. RS is a great rocket car, its a unique car. Everything on this car has a racing potential :D Its one of the few family cars, that can do racing. But it is legend in racing. Powerfull engine , balanced suspensions , easy drive and fast racing handling. Imprezas do not have strong engine like this. Even with the same power there is only few imprezas that are faster in racing , it is RA VI, also 22B I think. This is racing icon, one of the few, I need it to be alive :D Its so great I can dream about it ! I dont know what I want more , lanc or impreza, I think currently impreza
Open your eyes men!!
As an Evo X owner It’s sad and I’m heart broken. STI, you must defend the rising sun flag for WRC. Do not let the RS and European win the WRC. We Japanese cannot lose...
Vun Lee Japan ftw
Vun Lee the asian cars dude.
Hyundai cant take win in wrc
Yaris hasn't done much in WRC tho T_T
muhammad hanif next
I still love my evo6
Proud owner of a Evo X Final Edition❤️
Nice u lucky fucker 🤣
You lucky bastard 🤣🤣🤣
@@Eliri1999 sold it after 3 years lol, it was extremely unreliable and couldnt compete with the faster cars
Owner of an X as well. 90k miles and still going strong. Putting a new cat and exhaust system next month.
I love how the Evo IV look, is so agresive, I would do anything to own one...
Would you work harder for one?
anything?.....
@@baphomet4073 😂
Me to
Mitsubishi brothers evo..my loveeer
I just love the looks of EVO 9... anyone agrees?
Rip the Evo series ;-;
Evo has been dead since the X. RIP Evo since 2K8.
Luke Brunner evo x is the best one
Brayden Barnett Totally! No wrc championships, no world time attack championships. (Evo 9 has won the last 4), no 1/4 mile records, limited modability compared to 4g63 and the car was fat as fuk! Best evar!!!!
Guys, I am a GC8 STI owner, always dreamed about Evo tho.
New cars are crap. Made out of jelly and some hideous plastic. It sucks dick.
The cars are hevier, slower and got so many driving aids that my 60 y.o. mother can be as rast as some "racing" drivers in one of these.
The game is over for us enthusiast. Stick to your old cars and keep them going, in few years all of them will be worth a fortune.
Peace among rally world!
Right... =(
Lancer Evolution VIII...👍👌❤
The very first Lancer i EVER saw was in Jackie Chan's "Who Am i?"
lancer like on my photo?
@@zundapp940 nope, Lancer Evo 1
I think so too...
hahaha in reality those cop cars would never be anywhere near it but ok hey you got to make a movie hehe. It's a 0-100 in 4.4 seconds and flat out through the turns kind of car
First evo i saw in a movie was jackie chan's "thunderbolt"
I have an evo8 , from the showroom, brand new, it has 35k on the odometer!!! I bought it November 2005 and the next owner will be my Son!! Great clip
Similar situation. I'm an original owner of a IX. 55K miles, 5 sets of tires, 4 sets of pads, has never been a daily driver. Its next owner will be my son.
Children will destroy it. 😒
Dr.Butts just teach him the way my dad did. Put him to play a lot of driving games, (specially games that glorify cars such as need for speed hot pursuit, Porsche unleashed and gran turismo) take him to watch some races with you and than put him behind the driving wheel of yours. This made me love cars till this day (initial d might help too. Cars in this show are basically characters)
Pittas Savvas i wish my dad drive an evo😂😂😂
The children don’t deserve it
this video is making me miss my 1st gen lancer 😢
It will be missed.
Wish the Evo V was introduced in the US. Fell in love with it when featured in the movie "Legend of Speed." Those of us hungry for that version had to purchase kits and parts to replicate its exterior aesthetic and speed of the original model. IMO, that was the best iteration of the evo legacy. Nonetheless, each version had its own uniqueness.
Love my Evo V, for me the best looking one 🥰👍
I live subaru sti... But It sucks to imagine thea'l b no more evos... Cheers to our best friend n greatest nemisis....epic vidz kip em comin
raven 27 we are still around.
Subarus are friend not food
raven 27 evo and sti are friend, the Euro cars are the enemy
Your channel is the next big thing! last time I said that, channel grew up to a million lol
assaulter99 Thanks! That's very motivating. Fingers crossed!
Its heartbreaking to me because this has always been my favorite car. I honestly feel like Mitsubishi had so much potential but didnt give it there all. Its sad
Blame management.
Thats what i call a History Lesson. Love the EVO serie. True Rally Legend.
Mitsubishi have achieved goals in racing that only few big companies have achieved, the evo was multiple times world rally champion, and the mitsubishi pajero multiple times dakar champion..im a proud owner of a 2001 mitsubishi pajero/montero, i get to places land cruisers and subarus only dream of.
Technically it was only 1 championship for Mitsubishi.
Not like the 10 championships lancia have to their name.
The ANT dakar mitsubishi won 12 times!!
@@mitsuevo8mr ktm have won it 18 times.
Not really interested in the Dakar rally, i liked the Porsche that won it and the 405 t16, not really bothered about the rest.
@@theant9821 it's not only the number of titles that you should consider but rather the way they have won those titles (4 drivers championship,1 manufacturer's championship), Mitsubishi decided to stick with their own chassis despite the fact that everyone has shifted to wrc specific chassis and yet they had been successful. that just speaks for the level of engineering that they had put on the evo, its proven to compete and win titles on one of the highest form of motorsport activity and on my own opinion winning a manufacturer's title is more of a team effort being put together by both drivers unfortunately tommi makinen was the only one who was carrying the loads for Mitsubishi at the time compared to let say the team of Colin McRae and Richard burns.
@@osama1929 i know, but that was whichever brain donor decided to do away with Group A.
The way? The integrale was fairly audacious in its own achievements.
The integrale was getting long in the tooth by 1990 let alone its final championship in 1992, and it was almost won by a privately entered team without any manufacturer support in 1993 (the highest a car has ever finished in the constructors championship without manufacturer backing in the championship of any kind).
That is not bad for a car that went into production in 1979 with an engine design that first went into production in 1966. Not bad, not half bad at all.
Lancer Evo VI over here, without a doubt the funnest car I have
Mitsu killed the Evo, Im just happy I got a hold of a stock 9 3 years ago.
Can't spell LOVE without EVO ❤️
I'm surprised there was no mention of the FQ edition Evo's, great video nonetheless! 🙌🏼🔥
The Race Track always remain incomplete without Evo :(
Another great history lesson. Good that these were produced for so many years.
Yes. Hopefully there will be enough if I decide to pick one up in the future.
8, 9, or 10th gen?
swazi5 EVO IX
Proud owner of a evo x 2008
I got a 2004 gsr but it's in my garage with now motor! Fuck my life. I blew a piston. Got the motor fully rebuilt. Just have to put it jn....
no Evo without the Galant ;)
But I've seen the evo 11 on Google searches 🤔 Only available in Japan ?
The evo 6 is so hot i think its my favourite pwp
There was also a lot of those FWD Mitsubishi Mirage “Evolution V” running around...
Loved the video. Sad to see Mitsu drop the Evo, but better to go out on top (3000GT) as opposed to becoming bloated and neutered (Eclipse).
Thanks! Yes, it's unfortunate.
No mention about the FQ 400 that was sold in the UK?
MItsu revive the evo ASAP please! U have barely any brand builder cars now!
The 4G63 N/A is the best Engine what I have ever drived in my life!
I think you forgot to mention that EVO8 MR also includes a carbon wing.
I would have talked about the Lancer EX2000, the Starion, and the GVR4 more, but whatever. All have history behind the evo.
Evo IX the GOAT Evo
Clutch Kick evo 8 bruh
Clutch Kick m
To
Evo 6 and 6.5 the real goats
The Evo V and VI are the GOAT my dude. Has the looks and the trophies to boot.
It's unfortunate Mitsubishi ended the Evo and pretty much the entire brand. When you see a Mitsubishi car lot, you wonder what is there to look at? Since the evo is gone? Really sad when the final edition was done half ass and completely just put the badge "Final Edition" for the hell of it. If Mitsubishi wanted to improve its sales of the Evo, they only needed to make small changes to it. A nicer interior perhaps, new electronics and a great improvement would have been changing the gear box to a six speed. But of course, they would just rather end it entirely. Damn.
+Jun4patriots Yeah, it's unfortunate. You can only blame management for their horrible direction.
I can only hope by some miracle in a few years Mitsubishi makes a surprising resurrection from the dead and the Evo is revive and upgraded to a much better and badder version from new management and if it does come back, please please do not make it an automatic trans. Keep the stick shift alive.
Jun4patriots the funnier thing is that the final edition cost 42k with no RECAROS!!!!! That's not an evo 🤦🏽♂️
Yeah, it was the shitty final edition and a disgrace to the brand. Mitsubishi gave up in the car industry, all their cars today are just plain shit.
I hate that they discontinued the evo. but I think mitsubishi did it at a perfect time. with them out running subaru and losing competition. after they released the evo x and it being the worst evo generation, it was in their best interest to discontinue the evo before they destroyed it glorious name. no matter the fact that subaru is still making the sti, evo's will always be more desirable due to their success and being overall a better car than the sti. i beleive the sti will die of soon also being that the sti is going down hill. heres to the evo being one of the best 4 cly awd sports sedans of all time.
my favourite looking one was the VII
+Hani Sallim Nice
I like the Evolution III best.
Hani Sallim I think my favorite is the IV. It was the first one I ever saw via the Jackie Chan movie that Gary referenced.
P.S there's a Lancer Evolution (I) for sale over in Tampa ATM, so much want...😟
Hani Sallim Mines the VI model I love it
I love my 6, I’ve never driven anything that felt so purposeful
Dude thanks to your video i found my dream evo(which is automatic) ive been looking for awhile now .. good work keep it up. :D
