    I daily drove my Evo 9 for over 5 years without a single issue. Like others have said, I don’t know where you heard they weren’t reliable? Half of the instances where evo’s have broken down are when they are pushing over 700whp and are beaten like a step child. And at that point, anything would break down

  • @jakesleagans3496
    @jakesleagans3496 6 лет назад +86

    Reliability...if you drive either an STI or Evo like a raped ape its going to break. Comes down to the driver, the tuner, and service. -Evo X owner and daily driver.

    You are sooooo getting flamed for saying that the evo is not reliable.

  • @Zerofightervi
    @Zerofightervi 6 лет назад +299

    " It's a simple fact that the Evo is one of the most unreliable cars ever made "
    That's not fact, it's a statement by a loved up Subaru fanboy.
    I daily drove my Evo IV as my only transport & it only ever had one failure which was a crankshaft pulley, replaced at a tiny cost.
    I'm afraid it is the boxer powered Subaru that has the reputation for being prone to failures.
    In back to back comparisons it was the Evo that came out on top more often, the Impreza WRX STI might have been easier to live with on a daily basis but the Evo was always the more focused drivers car.

    • @xxJoshxMxx123
      @xxJoshxMxx123 6 лет назад +4

      Zerofightervi Hey buddy i’m thinking of getting an evo next month. why do you say the subaru might be easier to live with? Does the evo have an uncomfortable ride experience or something?

    • @Zerofightervi
      @Zerofightervi 6 лет назад +18

      The Golden Nugget Some people find the EVOs ride to be quite unforgiving, my IV had a set of ohlins dampers on it from the previous owner so I can't give a comparison of a standard car.
      I'm just going by various road testers.
      The Impreza has slightly longer service intervals than the Evo.
      The EVOs chassis setup is more adjustable as it can oversteer more readily, the STI has a tendency to understeer like a FWD when pushed, which is more predictable for novice drivers.
      Completely ignore this nonsense video saying the Evo is unreliable, buy the most standard car you can or buy one that has been tuned by a decent garage & you shouldn't suffer from any issues other than wear & tear, brake pads & maybe suspension bushes.

    • @xxJoshxMxx123
      @xxJoshxMxx123 6 лет назад +2

      Thanks for the info. I ask because whatever evo I buy will also be my daily driver. So i wont do much to it when it comes to upgrades.

    • @Zerofightervi
      @Zerofightervi 6 лет назад +5

      The Golden Nugget The Evo is more than capable out of the box, mine was fairly standard, mainly HKS bolt on parts.
      If I were to give you any advice I'd say buy the best car you can that has been owned by the same person for a good few years, preferably by a genuine enthusiast.
      If this owner has treated the car with sympathy rather than ragging on it ( full bore standing starts are for morons & motoring press ) then you'll have a car more than capable of being a daily.

    • @osvaldovalencia6330

    reliability with subaru?
    man you gotta be kidding. the 4G63T is easily one of the most reliable 4-cylinder engines even until today's standard, and way cheaper to maintain than subaru's boxer.

  • @drake5557
    @drake5557 6 лет назад +18

    The Evo has such a rich history. You fail to mention the Lancer EX2000, one of the first cars to ever come with a 4g63t. And you barely the Galant VR4 (not even mentioning its a VR4).
    Shame.

    Not sure were you get the Evo is not reliable and that the Subaru is more reliable than the Evo the 4g63 is probably the best four-cylinder motor ever made and they are very reliable I should know I have owed three of them without a problem but you always hear about how unreliable Subarus are and how they keep blowing ring lands when you try to make any kind of power without tuning them just saying I like the video but reliability and Subaru just don’t go together just saying

    Here's a poem written by me on Evo.
    You would die we never knew -Srijan Gupta
    We miss you!
    Making your way out of the queue,
    A different class you drew,
    You would die we never knew.
    Millions of people your photos stuck with glue,
    Be it Tokyo, Paris or Peru.
    On seeing you, we said Yahoo.
    You would die we never knew.
    We bow to the people who made you,
    Be it Evo I or II.
    We have forever loved you.
    You would die we never knew.
    The multiple opponents you got through.
    No matter what challenges were thrown at you,
    No one could ever subdue you.
    You would die we never knew.
    Losing to you was like a deja vu.
    Be it GTR, Supra or Subaru.
    You are the best, yes that’s true.
    You would die we never knew.
    But we are sad we couldn’t rescue you.
    I am saying this without a further ado.
    We can’t live without you!
    You would die we never knew.

      Ian Santi 4's are the ones you want to avoid, they suffer from crank walk and AYC issues (ayc issues also affected 5 & 6's), so if its not had a replacement crank you should budget for one.

    I own an evo 9 and have pushing 315 to the wheels at 25 psi, with out an issue, the evos if anything are more reliable than the Subaru, bc you literally have to build Subaru for everything, you don't really need to do any internal motor work to a 4g63 til about 550hp, I feel like every Subaru enthusiast states at least one false fact about an evo when they do a review on one, smh

    I'm a Subie guy but I was gonna buy an evo X but they sold the evo before I could buy it. I'm glad they did because I got a stock 2011 STI sedan with low miles. For more than the evo but apparently the guys at the shop I was going to buy it from, drove the shit out of the evo and they ended up tripping the CEL...I'm glad I didn't end up buying that. Eventhough as a Subie lover I still like Evos as well....
    EDIT: Way before I bought my subie, I had a buddy with a heavily modded Evo 8... We went for more beers and , being a car guy, I asked him if he would launch it hard... He agreed... and holy shit....It gripped and took off like nothing I've felt before and the sound of the BOV was nuts but also the torque after he shifted...such a mechanical feel but it felt soo good....I haven't felt the same feel again. I'm an STI daily driver now but I still respect and like evos to this day because of that trip in that modded evo IX....

    • @The303Garage
      @The303Garage  6 лет назад

      Every clip I use falls under fair use policy. I edit them in some way and commentate over them. I credit each clips original owner both in video in the corner and in the description with a link to the original. This normally keeps me pretty safe in avoiding copyright strikes but every now and then ill get a strike for a certain portion of the video.

    • @TheBTRGarage
      @TheBTRGarage 6 лет назад +1

      Hmm, interesting. Editing clips and crediting them falls explicitly under RUclips fair use myths, meaning it is not fair to use them even when doing that. Guess I don't need to take it as seriously as I have been for so long, if it is not a huge issue for you. Thanks.

    Are you saying that EVOs are unreliable? Dude the fact that 1300-1400bhp is so easily possible in a 4G63T and 4B11T is because of the reliability of EVOs. Some EVOs have even been using stock transmissions and axles/driveshafts at that kind of power level. I've never seen a Subaru achieve that kind of feat.
    But you say that you're a Subaru guy so maybe you're just saying BS about the EVO. The fact that you can't daily drive an EVO is utter bullshit. You can! Want proof? Check out the owner of Shift Fast Motorsports. He daily drives an EVO 8 that he has tuned to 700whp on a STOCK bottom end, at 42 PSI of boost and has never had one single mechanical fault/failure, even after owning it and daily driving it for years. Unreliable my ass! When it comes to EVOs and their reliability (which is solid), who do you think I'm gonna believe? A random RUclipsr who's never owned an EVO and is strongly biased towards Subarus? Or a tuning shop who is the leading masters of tuning EVOs and STis (and has been doing it for so long)?
    I'm very obviously gonna believe the latter cos I'm not a fool and ain't stupid.

The 2011+ models had no TSB warranty issue and can run north of 450whp forever with no issues. The 5 speed transmission can handle 1000whp. Nice vid but some of your facts are a bit off. The evo has a much more reliable engine. It can take 20 psi all day and doesnt blow because of the forged internals from factory. Try that with a sub and it dies. Maybe the ones in america are crap but the evo never had to play catch up to the subaru in any situation. Both cars out did each other slightly from year to year but the evo did better most of the time. Look at the subs from the last 5 years; not so great comepared to the evo. Do more research please.

      Well, it's not only money..there are a SHIT TON of people that buy up used and bargain bin parts and get tuned up into the 700's+ only to have these sub-rate parts fail and take the car with it. This is common in the Evo scene as a lot of people picking up the Evo used as they got cheap before the X went out of production. These owners are not car guys, they're gamer dudes. They barely knew how to change their oil before buying an Evo.

    EVOs are only considered unreliable because most owners don't keep up with the pricey maintenance. They are broke with the purchase alone and spend money on Mods over maintenance. I was lucky enough to get a 5-sp manual EVO X FE with 15k miles from a dealership that was dumb enough to Pre-ceritfy the car. I bought every extended warranty they offered, plus had two months left on the manufacturer's warranty. I took it to Mitsubishi the next day to diagnose any issues and got a clean bill of health.

    Good video. I was a DSM guy from 2002-2012, then got an Evo last summer after a long break. I agree with most of this, but I think you're too hard on the Evo's reliability and give too much credit to the WRX/Sti. Everyone I've ever hung out with the last almost 20 years are Mitsu guys. We all moved on to Evos now. A lot are modified and high-mile Evos doing just fine. I can't speak for Subbies that much, but no way are equally-modded Subaru's as reliable in comparison as you say. Compare a regular Subaru, like a Legacy, to a regular Lancer.
