    You've asked for it and here it is - a lowdown and a teardown of Mitsubishi's famous 4G63t.
    What engine would you like us to feature next? Let us know in the comments section:)
    ------------
    Often voted alongside of Honda’s K-series and Nissan’s SR20 as the best import four cylinder engine of all times, Mitsubishi’s 4G63 is also one of the favourites within the JDM tuning and racing community.
    Hitting the spotlight in 1980s powering Mitsubishi’s World Rally Championship program Evolutions with the legendary Tommi Makinen, the 4G63s quickly reached a cult status among import enthusiasts.
    Quickly adapted for drag racing the 4G63 is now a common sight on strips around the world with Haltech heroes like Aaron Gregory and Devin Schultz pushing their 4G63T powered machines to consistent 7 and 8 second ¼ mile times at over 200mph!
    In this video we dig deep into the innards of this power plant to see what makes it one of the most revered four cylinders on the planet.

    Why's everybody worried about 'long' videos? If you can't spend 26mins learning, you won't be granted much success upgrading any car component. I've wasted 30 mins removing a single bolt.... More long vids please :)

    8:40 not only turned around but mirrored. The cams point the other way, but the exhaust manifold is still towards the front of the car.
    21:53 If the engine is out its better to just get a balancer delete kit. And if you really want to keep it, replace the belt. Remember, the balancer is spinning twice as fast as the engine rpm, so it it could potentially rip at 15000rpm and break the cam belt or make it jump a cog potentially damaging the engine. Remember that you cant just remove them but the lubrication of the shafts need to be blocked using a readily availabe kit.

    Magnus motorsports went into the crank walk issue and had suggested that it's the result of the revised second generation oil squirters sticking open. Since the revised squirters draw right off the main oil bearings instead of the main oil gallery it can cause oil starvation at low rpm when you would have the clutch pushed in. The 1993-94 DSM engines had the 7 bolt girdled block design but the early 6 bolt oil squirters design. Same with my 1992 Lancer GSR 7 bolt block.

Even essentially stock internal motors can make good power easily. My 4G63 RWD swapped Datsun 510 (#4G63510) made 285whp at 10psi on a GT3076 with everything else stock. Turning the boost up to 14psi it made 345whp. I built the head and was about to do cams before I saw the numbers and now I'm scared to make more power. A 2300lb car on 205 width tires is a handful :-)

    Gutless down low, it never pulled at all until 4000 rpm, and even then it was nothing to write home about. Fuel economy was poor too.
    Then time came to change the timing belt. I found the camshaft was out by TWO TEETH!
    The belt was in OK condition, seemed tight enough, all the rollers were fine, I can only think the timing has been out by miles for the past 100,000 km!
    Needless to say, it's an entirely different beast now. Twice as fast on about half the fuel.

    It's smooth. Those balance shafts are amazing, and you didn't mention them until 6:25, and then in the context of removing the best part of the engine. The smooth running of the 4g63 made it feel refined. Too bad it was also harsh sounding and noisy at high rpms. That made it seem a little less refined.

    The 4g69 is very similar to this motor the deck height is almost the same, its cast iron block/aluminum head, VVT, and its timing belts are very similar, except its 2.4L and SOHC... these things are very very slept on for building a fast NA or turbo car

    Great video! I drive a 2Gb Eclipse GS which, here in Europe, has an N/A 4G63 engine. It's only got 140 hp, but the engine's got great character and feels lovely to rev. Unfortunately it's developed the ticking mentioned briefly in the video, but it's nice to know that it can be fixable with a simple replacement.

    24:11 My understanding of the Balance Shafts is they reduce unwanted vibration at high revs and prevents things like motor mounts from shaking. I don't see how this could be a negative observation. I'd much rather have them in than out, although the difference might be slighty unnoticeable. Definitely not dead weight though.

    Is there a difference between the Evo 1-3 engine and the later model engines that sat around the other way?

    • @Potatoestornadoes
      @Potatoestornadoes 4 года назад +1

      The internals of the later models are revised and more durable, you can swap evo parts to a dsm but I wouldn't recommend vice versa. But the intakes and exhaust won't work due to being designed for 2 different orientations. I own a 99 eclipse gsx but haven't really looked into evo parts since they cost just as much as name brand parts nowadays

      @@Potatoestornadoes What bout the block and head? I know the head has a different valve cover so I assumed the actual head itself is different, If i'm not mistaken the ports are reversed as both have the exhaust towards the front of the car?

      @Potatoestornadoes 4 года назад

      @@Jakanddaxter1999 evo cams are on the opposite side so the heads and blocks do not swap. The closest you could get would be to gut a later gen evo and swap the internals. You could probably get it to work with some major fab work and alot of creativity lol

    You need to cover the early G63B(sohc 8v with turbo and efi) it has more meat than the 4G63T because they weren't interested much economics in the early 80s so the G63B has more meat than the 4G63T. Whilst they needed shave off some meat near the cylinder bores in order to save a bit of production costs so the G63B does have a bit more meat near the cylinder bores. Also early 63s has a version called "Sirus dash" which had a 12 v engine and the 3rd valve opens at 2500rpm. And the reason why 4G63Ts have silent shafts or balance shafts is because Mitsubishi first made this engine for the 1981 Mitsubishi Lancer Ex 2000 Turbo and that car was made to be a luxurious sportscar with both luxury,comfort and a bit of sportiness so they need to make the car silent so silent shaft technology was integrated to the engine block and I think Mitsubishi didn't want to risk the probability of making the block less strong so I'm guessing they kept it anyways.

    The eclipse, mirage and Talon sporting a tunned out 4g63t have scored the fastest 4cil tunner more times than any other 4 cil out there. I would say this is the best in the world, as per achievements. Since 1995 in my Puerto Rico there's been a record world fastest 4g63 for the top 4cil overall category. From a 2 door mirage to the red demon eclipse they've conquered the gold more than any other veh in this category. And even in 40 years is still relevant. And now the Aussie's have made it too.
